The fire was not able to be contained and put out and that is why LA is burning down? Then you have a fire chief that was hired because she was female and LBGTQ and not have the resume for a job. A neighboor did this too some years ago, where I live in Scandinavia, a single mom with 3 children children invested in this type of system and pumped water from her pool on the house and managed to put out a fire before the firefighters had arrived. University education gave her the understanding of seeking out information and this knowledge she then adapted to her home situation. She mansged to get herself, the children and their pets out and then ran to start the machine that pumped water. She too had installed sprinklers on her own, dug it all out and used a hose to focus extra on some areas. This cost her lots of time and money, but ended up saving her family. Twice a year she would test run the sprinkler system and the pumping machine.
      *This is not about genitalia (even if you claim so with your ”father in a household” comment, but privilege of education and finances!*
      It’s also not a sure thing because Ricki Lake’s family had the same system installed and their entire peoperty burned down to the ground. It’s not going to work a 100 % and it’s cruel to imply people’s homes could have been saved if they only had installed a massive sprinkler system and had a machine that pumped water from the pool.
      I love that this family managed to save their house though, so one takes this comment as a slight to them in any way. It’s not!

    A lot of people online who write things like "it's only stuff" don't get that there are people living in Pacific Palisades (and other burn areas) who have lived there for 40-50 years and longer, before the extreme property prices, and have been able to remain despite the escalating property taxes because of the 1970s Prop 13. When the father/grandfather said the house was his neighbor's only asset, I felt so bad. It isn't only the wealthy who live in what are now well-known super expensive areas in California and for those people their houses cannot be replaced and good luck finding a decent place to live anywhere in California that doesn't cost an arm and a leg. Retirees, if not wealthy, are ruined.

    This was a question I've had for the last couple of days: Why didn't people pump water out of their pools? Why didn't those in Malibu pump water out of the ocean? We live right on the Wind River in Wyoming. Last fall a wildfire in the mountains 20 miles away burned for more than 2 months and destroyed 90,000 acres. We have not only cleared brush and trimmed the trees up 8 feet but we have a pump that we can attach a garden hose to and pump water out of the river. It cost less than $300. You have to think ahead about fire risk. This man did.

    • @Peter-x8i1q
      @Peter-x8i1q 9 дней назад

      @@HerpDerpNV You’re mistaken-this isn’t something just anyone can manage. Preparation is absolutely essential. Without it, the only sensible option is to evacuate. Even with preparation, there are times when staying isn’t safe. The main failure here was the lack of readiness, for reasons I can’t fully understand. The hydrant system wasn’t fully operational, and most houses weren’t fortified. Perhaps it was a lack of imagination about what could happen during an extreme fire event.
      In this area, it’s critical to reinforce homes and communities against such risks. Unfortunately, that didn’t happen, and now many are paying a high price. That said, I’m confident this issue isn’t tied to which political party is in charge-I doubt it would’ve made a significant difference.
      In my line of work, preparation for nearly any scenario is a core priority, so I’ve developed a certain mindset over the years. It requires both imagination and a touch of paranoia to succeed. Assuming everything will be fine may be a more common mindset, but it doesn’t hold up in the face of crises like this.

    I saw on TV about ten years ago an item where a movie/TV producer had something similar set up. He had a large gasoline powered pump in a shed near his pool. He just had to put the intake hose in his pool and push a button to start the pump. He even had instructions printed on the side of the shed so that any neighbor or fireman could start this. He had sprinklers already on his roof and some around his house. He also had a system that would mix in sodium polyacrylate (the material that makes diapers so water absorbent) into the water so that a wet gel is sprayed all over so he does not have to keep spraying water so much. I now wonder if this house was in the fire area adn how did they come out.

There is NOT an infinite number of firemen and trucks. LA is a huge city of closely packed houses with a variety of terrain full of dried vegetation. Yes, your tax dollars help fund the police and fire departments but the money only goes so far in normal circumstances. When something like this happens everyone needs to do what they can to help. If something as simple as a generator and sprinkler system can save your home, DO IT. Don't wait for over burdened public services that are strained to the maximum. A long time ago our insurance agent told me to video tape everything in your house every time you are not going to be home for even one night. Video tape inside every cabinet, drawer, closet inside and outside just before you leave. People are busy and they forget that things change inside your house. Once I got the routine down I could video my whole house quickly. The last thing on my video is me locking the front door. At first a lot at to do but if a disaster takes your house, worth it! Good for this family be PROACTIVE! I applaud you.

    fantastic for standing and fighting . In BC Canada we have been doing sprinkler protection for interface firefighting for several years now . I was a firefighter that worked on interface firecrews and sprinkler protection crews (SPU) through some of our worst fire seasons in history and i can say without a doubt that SPU deployment is one of the most effective and safest ways to combat a a situation such as this. it is a godsend . Sprinklers set up on houses running off of a pump being fed by a water source be it bladder tank or other it takes less water then trying to fight the fire and it creates a humidity bubble that is incredibly effective . We have literally set up and had to bug out for our own life and safety to come back to the structure's still standing and intact. where before the whole community would be burnt down. keep fighting good luck and take care of each other

    Good to see this. I grew up in the 90s in Australia and we had a pool pump and sprinkler system because my local school did a fire danger education unit in Geography class that included every kid preparing a fire defence and risk reduction strategy for their family home, plus an evacuation planning meeting agenda to be used at home with the family. That was literally 30 years ago. Fuel reduction, vegetation management, water storage, personal evacuation planning, and fire pump methods are not new ideas. The government in California really should do a lot more to drive this into the daily lives of every person that lives in fire prone areas.

      @@SpringNotes I understand your point, but taking it as a government issue might highlight the bigger difference between Aus and US/LA thinking around bushfires?
      Most of the initiatives like @CompleteHealthControl describe are driven by our rural fire services, which are largely volunteer organisations, and are ingrained in our society, particularly in rural and semi-rural communities.
      For example, the RFS in NSW (where I am.) is the largest volunteer firefighting service in the world, almost 1% of the population are members. For comparison Google tells me ~0.07% of the population of California are members of a volunteer brigade.
      It is impossible for a public service to handle massive catastrophic bushfires like this, a large portion of the population need to be on-board with bushfire awareness ingrained as part of life, otherwise the costs to taxpayers would be astronomical.

It will activate when fire starts , dowsing the flames . Use the salt water from the ocean and filter it to prevent corrosion to pipes , pumps and materials . Please don't let this happen ever again . Prayers from Scotland .
