    Hey Jonathan,
    Thanks for another great tutorial :-) Two quick additions though:
    Firstly, you can probably save yourself a lot of hassle by just importing your C4D project into AE directly and then using the Cineware effect (which lets you 'export' the animated camera and any null objects you defined in C4D earlier).
    Secondly, I was having a really bad time yesterday, making the imported camera animation match the UE render. It was always a bit off and since I had to replace a screen in the render with a video in AE, I needed absolute precision.
    After a lot of trial and error I realised that you have to...
    a) ...offset the render and the imported animations by one frame (i.e. the render from UE starts at frame '0', but the camera and null object animations have to start at frame '1').
    b) ...go into the 'Advanced' tab underneath the 'Composition Settings' and set the 'Shutter Phase' to -90 degrees, so that the motion blur inside AE matches the motion blur that was rendered inside UE.
    Once that's done anything that's added inside AE matches the UE animation perfectly (FYI, my entire workflow was based on 25fps).
    Hope this helps :-)

    The reason for the camera to be rotated is due to diffrent axis in diffrent software. C4d axis is Y up but in unreal engine its Z up. So it can be fixed in fbx import or export dialog box, there will be up axis dialog box.

    THIS IS THE MOST IMPORTANT TUTORIAL any graphics artist learning Unreal should watch. You are a true pioneer sir. I had messed with C4d as a throughput , but I never did your GROUP OBJECTS in C4. I always parented to a Null, which somehow didn't work. I am curious if you ever considered pulling in the cinema 4d scene directly into after effects, and then using the included After Effects plug-in to EXTRACT ALL, which places a Camera and lights (and possiblty nulls). I ask, because I think I did that and failed. But I hadn't tried it with the GROUP method. I'll get back to you! Well done!

    Oh, I also had a camera request from UE for subsequent compositing in Ae by the post-production guys. I also tried in every possible way to export the camera to cinema 4d and it was always in another place, then turned out.
    My solution was this: export the camera from UE to an FBX file, and then import this fbx into 3ds Max ... and voila! 3ds Max reads exactly the position of the camera and objects that you unload from the sequencer. and then from 3ds Max we again unload to FBX and I already uploaded this file to Cinema 4d
    and it works!

    winbush this is absolutely incredible, i think this is exactly what ive been looking for, basically i am filming my talent on a green screen with the camera still on a tripod, then im keying it out in fusion > exporting into an EXR > then importing into unreal engine either on an image plane or into composure and then making the camera moves unreal engine, making all my camera movement in the environment around my subject / the image plane then im exporting the cg plate BG and then separately exporting the stencil/media plate layer FG. THEN im compositing it back together in Davinci fusion. its working but im loosing quality in my EXR throughout the process and also loosing control over the color spaces. so what im thinking is now just temporarily adding the pre-keyed exr media into unreal, doing my camera movements, rendering out the cg background then hopefully exporting the scene like you are doing here fbx etc and then creating a compositing 3d scene for fusion and adding the RED raw shots straight into the 3d scene, does that make sense?? ive been looking for someone doing this!! what do you think

      Oh man I did that in like 2016 lol
      I used this plugin called RE:Map but it wasn't the greatest revisionfx.com/products/remap/
      If I was to redo it today I would just use Unreal Engine and I would use decals to get them to be on the walls ruclips.net/video/KcY0DX8pPEw/видео.html

    Is there a particular number of cameras you can have in any given scene? I was thinking about if I could record with the Iclone live link as well as the Unreal Engine camera to capture my scenes, because I wanted to use the Blueprints in after effects to take advantage of some of their systems, and any vfx assets that after effects' might have that I need.

    • @JonathanWinbush
      @JonathanWinbush  2 года назад

      since unreal doesnt officialy support After Effects it gets a little tricky taking just the one camera over so I can't imagine doing multiple

      @@JonathanWinbush yes, but colorisation and composting is easier in ae for me. Maybe you know how to render only one bilboard unlit separatelly, next background and then combine it in ae. Thanks for the tutorial! I have an issue when I want to export the camera motion with non-linear interpolation to FBX. The exported FBX file becomes linear interpolated, no ease in and out as I have set in Unreal ... Anyone who has a solution?

    • @JonathanWinbush
      @JonathanWinbush  3 года назад

      Hmm sorry about that I would need to see but I don't remember that happening for me. This is more of an hack since theres no official way yet to bring your camera data into AE so there's sure to be hiccups for more complex moves

    hey winbush thank you for your awesomeness :)
    i tried this technic and found a problem maybe you could help me:
    i tried to export fbx from unreal seq with camera and actual geometry from the scene (not a simple cube),
    and then import the fbx into c4d, also i took the exr sequence and import it to c4d background with animation.
    then i found the problem : the fbx export does give the position and rotation of the camera but the field of view is different or focal length - dosent match between the fbx camera and the actual render.. how can i insure that its the exact same camera settings?
    i want to add more stuff from c4d on top of the unreal alpha render and need the perfect camera with the same field of view from unreal seq inside c4d/ after
    thanks alot

    • @JonathanWinbush
      @JonathanWinbush  2 года назад +1

      Why not just take the extra stuff in c4d and bring it into Unreal instead. I did this more of a way to get camera positions for after effects but it's not perfect by far.

      @@JonathanWinbush thanks for answering! my goal is : i have a scene with camera movement and practical lights in it. but i hate unreal lens flares - so i had an idea to take the scene from unreal seq - to c4d - than - inside c4d add lights in the same location where the ue lights were - add the external compositing tag to all the lights- and then export to after, and inside after use optical flares by video copilot. but when i tried this it was all messed up. the lights where at different location, the camera has the same position and rotation but the perspective is different- do you have any idea how to solve this?

    Its 20204 and there still is ZERO information out there how to get a 3D camera into After effects from ANY other 3d package than cinema4d...
    I just found out that you CAN now import gltf 3d models directly into After Effects AND you can also extract the animated 3d Camera from that same file, but they don´t match up for me and once more...ZERO information out there on that.
    Would be great if anyone could tackle that.....wink wink...

      Blender works pretty well:
      - Export the same way as FBX
      - Import into Blender
      - Make sure render settings match
      - Select all the layers you want to export
      - File -> Export -> Adobe After Effects (.jsx) (If it's not there, enable in Preferences -> Add-ons)
      In After Effects you then go:
      - File -> Scripts -> Run Script
      And blam, everything setup. Blender uses the same axes as Unreal Engine so no need to rotate anything.
