Fine Art TV Series - Colour In Your Life
Season - 07
Episode - 02
Filmed on Location at - Armidale, NSW, Australia
Barry McCann was born in 1962 in Armidale NSW Australia, where he now lives with his wife Lucy, also a full time artist. Together they run McCann Fine Art, producing, selling and teaching art.He is the recipient of numerous awards and prizes and his works hang in collections around the world.
Barry McCann’s interest in art began with his love of drawing as a young student presenting school assignments with more illustrations than text and developed further as a young adult during his college years. Drawing became a way of gaining some pocket money and new friends.
His artistic interest and flair became very advantageous with his chosen trade as a Chef and Cake Decorator, but it wasn’t until he enrolled in an introductory Watercolour course at the Canberra School of Arts, A.C.T. that his appetite for art really began. Armed with an insatiable thirst for art knowledge, he stumbled upon a book about the life and works of artist John Singer Sargent and this has influenced his work and artistic vision ever since. He has studied with many leading artists in their field in order to build on his skills and in 2000 he began painting as a fulltime career. Barry’s love of art has taken him to some of the best museums and art galleries in the world where he draws constant inspiration.
His subject matter usually involves an animated object with a dramatic light effect and enjoys the constant challenge of trying to portray the illusion of both movement and form with a narrative theme. The pursuit of conveying beauty in his work is paramount. He believes that art is a visual language and should need little explanation… you should just like looking at it. Finding the middle ground where traditional representational art can be fused with a more modern look is something he strives for. His work usually portrays a traditional scene and is painted using loose edges, obvious brushstrokes, dribbles, spatter or “movement lines” all of which are used in contemporary art practices.
Barry McCann would like his viewers to not have an opinion of his work, but a connection or a response..

ANOTHER AMAZING TUTORIAL THANKYOU , WITH YOUR EASY TO UNDERSTAND EXPLANATIONS. I LOVE YOUR AWESOME PAINTINGS, THEY ARE STUNNING AND SO INSPIRING... THANKYOU so much Graeme for bringing us Barry McCann....Lynda from NZ
What a bright personality!
Lots of light to him… no darks❤😊
I've watched this episode from start to finish several times and have learnt something new every time....! Thanks so much....
Thank you Graeme Stevenson for the opportunity to learn heaps from Barry McCann. The results in his painting is proof of successful applications of varnishes together with the interactive paints and helpful mediums. I now will improve my own techniques accordingly, and improve the effects of conjuring warm and cool lights, and then painting them accordingly. The added understanding of sealing and saving my underdrawing with fast medium fixer is a huge help. Together with finishing varnishes, I hope to establish some effects of an oil painting, on my interactive acrylic work. Barry McCann is a great instructor, and inspirator. Thank you, very much appreciated Barry, Beverley Stowe.
Very beautiful paintings. He works so well with Acrylics.
That technique is so genius. I am truly amazed . I love it.l thank you 🙏 for sharing
Fantastic.
Thanks for your comments, they are greatly appreciated, Graeme
Loved watching this again. Looking forward to the Oct workshop.
im not complaining brownbearscout. I personally learnt a great deal from this particular episode from how he sets out his palette to how to organise and capture cool and warm tones in an original artwork! What mediums Barry uses and how to get the most out of them. I'll unashamedly watch as many infomercials as you put it if it'll teach me as much as this episode of CIYL just did. Amazing work Barry and Thankyou so much to you and Graeme for getting me back infront of some canvas again.
What a master piece. Truly, so glad you've created this channel to share so much goodness. The artists and the products. Thank you so much. Really enjoying it all.
Just watched this a second time with the first being a couple months back - absolutely gobsmacked and congratulations Barry and Colour in Your Life 🎨👌

Thank you, thank you, thank you! I'm an oil painter that has just started in acrylics (due to CIYL!) and have been having trouble with the acrylic fast drying time. Also, love the fast fix and sealer options. Couldn't have watched this at a better time, I'm off to purchase these much needed items.
Amazing love your work! Fantastic tutorial video. Like the paints and mediums very much!

LOTS of great info! THANKS!
Thank you!
Very good painting
great stuff and lovely artwork
very nice painting
It looks just like the photograph.
devin roberts I become very skeptical of painters who use photos in conditions where they could have painted from life much easier. It usually means they lack the confidence to complete a figure from life. Or they rely on tracing when no one's watching.
Tony Swaby No. It looks better than the photograph.
devin roberts Why an unconfident/shy artist makes you skeptical? Don't understand your pint at all. :)
Furthermore usually people you know in real life are not beautiful/interesting enough to paint them. :) It's a very limited range of people to choose from.
nice painting style and info of product use. Thanks.
It seems to be wonderfull products, but I wish you had written the names of the products and also put a link to where they can be bought
Barry uses Schminke paints these days, he feels they are a better quality
@@ColourinyourlifeAu Surprised to hear that he switched brands after how much he raved about the Interactives. For example, you can't "re-open" the Schminke paints, right?
awsome job
Loved this!
+Ellen Keagy Thanks Ellen, Graeme
Very amazon
amazing thank you
Fantastic, I thank you very much for making this available for us all to view. Is there a possibility to obtain a list of all the materials that Barry uses in his paintings. I was not able to keep track of the products and names. Thank you.
EXCELENTE, GRACIAS!!
LILIA PATRICIA MOTA Hi , yes he is amazing. We will have many more great Artists over time, so I hope you enjoy them all, dont forget to tell other folks about us. This only helps us to keep all of this going for everyone out there, hope all is well, Graeme
Very very very nice
Seem as if he painted over a black and white photograph.
I would like to see him start the painting.
Graeme, what is the background score on this? It matches so well with the painting and the painter!
and I'm following you on Patreon too.
Thanks CherryAnne, lovely to have you with us , Graeme
I've always heard you cant get as realistic with Acrylic as you can with oils(Boris Vallejo) I guess this disproves his theory!
love you
do you have a lesson video on oil paint? nice painting thank you...!
Amazing
That fast medium fixer, can you use it under oils to seal graphite?
if you painted some of that fixer on your actual painting will you be able to paint over it without causing it to shade?
Clash of Clans and Minecraft - Amayzinone Hi , yes he is amazing. We will have many more great Artists over time, so I hope you enjoy them all, dont forget to tell other folks about us. This only helps us to keep all of this going for everyone out there, hope all is well, Graeme
Clash of Clans and Minecraft - Amayzinone didnt expect you here lol
i just joined your page! rite on...
I’m wondering if those fixatives would work on gouache
Probably not . Just what I think , Graeme
its nice to know there are people still making wonderful art, it gets depressing seeing all this abstract and modern art junk.
+Jeb Pleb Thanks for your comments, Graeme
Random Den why so close minded....learn art history and try to appreciate modern art and contemporary art more. Oh, and I bet u can't tell the difference between contemporary art and modern art
Junk in your opinion. Cubism was great IMO!
Thanks for your post. What is the best medium to blend acrylics with please? Looking at the subtle blending on the shadow side of the figure in particular.
Amazing. Thanks for sharing. Could you mention the mediums you use? Thanks, i hope you will answer my questions.
I love to watch you
What’s the brand or name of the paint you used? I want to buy it. By the way thanks 😊 for acknowledging my comment.
"paint me like your french girls". haha
cool commercial bro

Interesting video about Barry McCann's use and endorsement of Atelier Interactive Acrylics. However, from what I've seen lately on his Face Book page, he has since moved on to PRIMAcryl paints by Schmincke. I sent him a note asking why he made this change, but never got a reply.
send him an email Fred on hos web site, best way to get him, Graeme
Thanks for the reply Graeme. I'm a big fan of your channel! I did try contacting Barry through his web site (as well as sending a FB message). I'm sure Barry is very busy, but I'll try again. Those of us who are into art are always curious about the materials artists use. I was also wondering if Barry had issues with Atelier paints.
Hi Fred, Chroma proved not to be very supportive of their Artists in the end and they have major problems with management and Jim the owner. They wanted everything for free all the time and most everyone got sick of it and has left to more supportive brands, Graeme
I appreciate the candid reply Graeme. Poor business sense on the part of Chroma management. It was artists like you and Barry who got me and many others interested in their product. Barry's recent work has certainly not diminished with the use of a different brand. This will cause many of us to consider other options the next time we buy supplies.
which brush is he using?
Is this canvas or paper that you paint on?
Very unsparing . Thank you
Great video!
Abdellah Akhdi
Abdellah Akhdi Hi , yes he is amazing. We will have many more great Artists over time, so I hope you enjoy them all, dont forget to tell other folks about us. This only helps us to keep all of this going for everyone out there, hope all is well, Graeme
Graeme Stevenson (Colour in Your Life) Hi Stevenson I ready shared on my page Facebook long time ago , I have more then 3000 people following me as an artist too but I do things different , also I do drawing with music , you can take look on my tube video if you like . Thank you so much for supporting and keeping Art on life .
Thanks Abdellah, nice to know you are helping us spread the word, hope you are well, Graeme
are you using canvas
yes Jessie he does but he just tapes it to a board so he has more flexibility with his brush strokes, Graeme
a question please, what is in the spray bottle to help the paints? I can not hear what you called it and on DickBlick can not see it, thanks so much!
you can buy them from Chroma paints, but it is just a normal spray bottle that you can also dilute mediums in as well
right, Graeme, just wondering what he had in it diluted to help keep the paint workable so well....what was that medium, it seemed to work very well....or maybe I miss understood all together. TY! I have scads of Jo Sonja paints and think what ever it was would work with them too? again, TY so much!
great artwork. could have gone without the sales pitch though
He kinda looks like Jerry Springer lol
Adds are getting smarter
I have worked with acrylics since the early 70's... mate, all acrylic manufacturers usually offer binders, retarder, gel mediums and on and on.. Atelier in MHO is one of many quality Australia paint makers.. I'm wondering, do you have a sponsor deal with them..LOL..because you sure do promote them well... Graeme could have had 10 more minutes of your great techniques without the Atelier product promotions.. just saying..
Thats right Ken, they paid for the show, cant do these things without the support of companies, Graeme
Fair enough mate... Back in the 80's I was often asked to test airbrush products for different importers.. Then they would like me to also do a painting using the mediums with them so they could publish an "How to" that was an ad. "Artist Care" in Sydney and "Cormacs" (both are out of business) come to mind.

Is this guy the artist for Mills and Boon?
this episode is just big advert, barry even said "this show was built around showcasing chroma products" 8 mins in and ive seen a showcase of his work, a big advert for the sponsors and him telling a model where to stand... very dissapointed.
I would've preferred some tips and techniques from this valuable Artist instead of promotes for a product .
please outlaw australians trying to speak french! WOLLAH!
