Our group of 6 chartered MokiMak two summers ago from the swell people at San Juan Sailing. She was a sweet boat (Seawind 1160).If I only remember one thing from the the briefing, "don't eat cherry pits." We trapped our limit of crabs, got boarded by the Coast Guard and cleared in Victoria...did it all. OP recommended the sculpture garden at Roche; I agree. I hope I make it back to the San Juans someday.

I absolutely love the San Juan Islands. A good friend and I did a bike tour about 35 years ago starting in Seattle and island hoped the SJ's before heading to the Olympic Peninsula then south to San Francisco. The San Juan islands are one of the most magical places on this planet. Thanks for bringing the fond memories back. Sail on!

So glad you enjoyed the San Juan Islands. Welcome to our little patch of paradise. Local hint - don't bother looking for orcas (killer whales) as you are cruising. Instead look for whale watch boats. They will be where the orcas are or will be heading there. The whale watch boats are a lot bigger and easier to spot than the whales themselves are. Besides, the boats don't submerge (hopefully) like the whales do. Just look for the whale watch boats as you cruise through the islands and/or follow them to the whales. The whale watch boats actually share orca sightings among the skippers so their clients have the highest probability of seeing the whales.

So nice to see you enjoying my home cruising grounds for the past 38 years. After a 20+ year USN career all over the world, we settled in the PNW and have cruised Puget Sound to the Broughtons (pwr & sail). Love your videos which bring back so many wonderful memories. BTW, I grew up sailing out of Quissett Harbor on Buzzards Bay just a nice sail from Wareham.

There was a shot fired ...and war was declared. There was a casualty, a Pig. Hence the Pig War causing San Juan Island to be occupied by the English and American Forces. When politicians were involved it became tense. However the military forces involved did not get tense and military commanders on both sides felt it was unseemly to get in a fight over a dead pig. Cooler heads prevailed.

As a British outpost, British Camp on San Juan Island was well supplied from Vancouver Island a few miles away. The Americans had to rely on slim pickings from the west coast. The final division of the island came after the Pig War of 1859 when the US and Britain almost went to war over a pig belonging to the British was killed by an American settler on San Juan Island.

The San Juan Islands are indeed beautiful! However, in a whale watching excursion a few years ago, we noticed almost into Canadian waters before sighting a large pod of Orcas. It was truly worth the trip because our guide recognized the members because they make that are their yearlong home. How are you enjoying this beautiful cat? Is it all that you hoped for? Finally, I’m looking forward to watching your upcoming Trawler adventures!

HOLY CRAP GIRL, even women get shrinky dink in these waters at that time of year lol. So glad you guys are enjoying our neck of the woods. If you thought that flood tide was cool you should see a few of the spots up here on the Canadian side. The rapids create whirlpools that would suck your boat into. You literally have to wait for slack water before going through these narrows. So you will hang out waiting and a pile other boats and tugs with log booms are all waiting too. Then at slack everybody runs through before in starts to flow again.

You really missed out on a charming spot by not going in to Roche Harbor. Back across the road behind the hotel is a very nice sculpture park. The restaurant at the hotel is good too! But glad you enjoyed your time in our neck of the woods. We’ve made some really amazing memories cruising the San Juan’s. Everything from being buzzed by Homeland Security 😂 to having a pod of whales decide to come in to the area right outside the corner buoy marking the big rock outside Roche and dive under and around our boat for an hour or so. So much crazy fun!

Just to make sure, when you mentioned that american camp was unfunded, did you notice the years of the conflict? Perhaps there was another priority around 1860? Also, the reputation of the PNW is that it rains a lot. Maybe 25 miles SW of American Camp is officially a desert (less than 20" of rain per year). It is also home to some crabs you may have heard of where the Dungeness river enters the Straits.
