I actually get emotional watching you guys for these past several years! Such a beautiful love story!! How's that from a grumpy old guy whose lost some loves in his life??!! Cheers to your ongoing chapters in this short journey on this beautiful planet!! -Perry
Welcome to the San Juan Islands. They are awesome! Those trees are madronas or madrones. Hard wood for sure. So enjoy! I'm down on Vashon Island which is just south west of Seattle. PNW rocks! Cheers!
As a dog whisper I want to tell you Jetty says thank you for the new collar and beautiful name tag. She would have barked louder at the man on the shore but she had to go to the bathroom to bad from holding it all night. LOL Sierra I love your new boots/shoes, they look nice, warm, waterproof, and comfy. Billy I am proud of you now that you are learning and getting browny points along the way by saying Sierra is a better boat driver, good move, especially if you messed up earlier. LOL. Sierra that was a funny comment about saying it is better or safer now knowing you have new engines. That was quite the challenge Billy took on rebuilding the one and I understand why you went home until he was finished. LOL Just picking. Love y’all three and your videos. Have fun. 👍🙏😎✌️
You guys are or Should I say were in one of the most beautiful places to sail, cruise or just be on the water in some form,, we have been out to the San Juan islands three times back in the early 2000’s visiting friends of ours that lived in New York and retired out on Orcas Island , we took many trips through the inside passage up to The port city of Nanaimo and across from there up into prince Louise sound to chatterbox Falls 🙌🙌🙌absolutely gorgeous boating!!! But being from the Fort Lauderdale area, the Bahamas also is our true tropical paradise 👌🥃🥃⛵️⚓️⚓️
Those are dogwoods only found in the Pacific Northwest . Or Arbutus Trees found on the Islands. My wife and I will be moving to the Pacific Northwest when we retire in 2 years.
Hey Billy and Sierra, welcome to our neighborhood. I've lived in the San Juans for over 50 years and every time I'm out on the water in our 34ft. CHB trawler (or at home with our view of Mt. Baker and the ferry arriving in Friday Harbor) I'm in heaven! I've followed your sea adventures since the beginning and so glad you had a chance to see our boating world on the Left Coast! Cozy Afloat
A great privilege for me was to have "Ruffles", a well known male Orca, spy hop next to me when I was in a Sea Kayak. He was no more then 12 feet away from me. Sadly we have not seen Ruffles in a long while. But the diverse wildlife of the San Juans is extraordinary. It is so fun to watch you take it all in for the first time.
I have been in the San Juan islands before. My wife’s Grandparents, Aunts and Uncles were from Seattle. On a visit we went up the islands they are Beautiful. I would love to go back and do a sailing adventure like you’re doing now. Thank you for taking us along.
Welcome to the PNW, it's been our secret for awhile. The rain stories keep most away but were always proud to show off this beautiful state. If you keep heading north through the inside passage it just gets mind blowing. Summers are usually very crowded at anchorages, but the fall and early spring are our favorite times to sail. Salmon, muscles & crab are abundant. So glad you are enjoying the area and hope to see you guys out there sometime.
It looks like you guys just found yourselves on a sailing adventure in the middle of pure natural beauty. At the moment very different from what all the other RUclips sailing families are doing. stay groovy and stay safe.
San Juan islands is one of the best spots in the country, absolutely no doubt. I went for my birthday a few years back, and if you luck out with weather, you will have the best time in your life. It's so quiet, and its gorgeous. Make sure to go Kayaking out in the water, its amazing!
That is one heck of a cheeseburger you made. Excellent choice for cooking asparagus. Beautiful scenery. I used to live along the shore of northern California and during November, the winter storm waves start rolling in. If you're in the Pacific northwest (California) during the first week of December, the fishing fleets cast off for Dungeness crab. The ocean is covered with lighted boats on the water. It's also fishing season for salmon.
You're in my home cruising grounds for the past 40 years. Reid & Prevost are two of our favorites, the SP on Jones is another one. But the best area is the Canadian Gulf Islands and north to Desolation Sound and the Broughton Archipelago.
Love the PNW! I lived there for 4 years. Love your videos and thrilled your thrilled about being there. I’ll visit there again one day. I’ve been to Friday harbor there. It was nice.
I wouldn't have thought your amazing Videography could have gotten better, but this one! THIS one is even more beautiful! Great job. From the grandeur of the forested mountains to the dog drying it's face - every second was great.
Lots of edible mushrooms out in those woods. Love madrona trees. The bark peels off during the summer. Great hardwood for wood stoves. I have lived near the Puget Sound and Hood Canal for 33 years and always missed visits from the orcas. Lots of bald eagles though.
We live in North Idaho now and boat on huge Lake Pend Orielle now. We are hoping to trailer our boat back to the San Juan Islands this summer! We spent our honeymoon boating there in 1974.
Long time subscribers of Tula and Florida native and saltwater addict! Sierra you are absolutely right! We vacationed in the San Juan Islands 14 years ago. Amazingly beautiful there. We got to see the Orcas at Lime Kiln Lighthouse! Amazing and waaay underrated vacation destination! Glad you both enjoyed it as much as we did!!
You need to find a gravel beach to get oysters. Head south into Hood Canal (by car) and you will find lots of oyster beaches. The trees with the reddish peeling bark are Madrone trees. You will only find them near salt water. If you like the San Juans, your NEED to go up into BC. Desolation Sound and the inside passage are incredible. Also you should hop over to Port Townsend when you et off the boat.
I've been missing you two. Last August through October I was in the hospital surviving Covid. I loved watching yours and other similar videos as I recovered,
The tree you asked about are Madrona..they burn hot and long, great for wood burning stoves.Welcome to the San Juan islands, yes, oysters although not many..known for abalone, sea urchins, rock crab, puget sound king crab, Ling cod, kelp greening, rockfish, lingcod, salmon, wolf eel,mussels...it's a great place for scuba and snorkeling best visibility is winter....I dove the islands for years.Have fun...if you dive while your there just dive on slack water or have a third person to operate the boat for pick up.
11:10 Im pretty sure that's poison oak along the caves. Its everywhere here in Cali. Don't want the dog to get into and have it get on the boat. Great video as always thanks.
very cool episode! Capt Jetty having a blast!...and genuine big smiles from the rest of the crew!, San Juan's/environs are so unique and beautiful- thanks for inviting us aboard!!
Glad to hear you like our backyard. Our family has been boating this coast for generations and are always happy to come home to it. If you can, get up into Canadian waters towards Desolation Sound. The beaches are full of oysters and clams and the water actually gets warm.
I actually missed you guys so much.. I even decided not to watch your land adventures.. But, this Ep made me happy.. You guys belong to the sea.. You belong to the mother ocean... Loads of love from India..
Nice seeing ya'll Back on the water! I didn't like the camper thing much. Love to know more about your New Boat and when and where are ya'll going to get it. Ok until next time Aloha from the Big Island of Hawaii.
On another sailing channel called Breaking Waves the have had great cruising videos of that area. Worth checking out if you haven’t already. I was lucky to have spent 2 nights on top of a mountain called 3 Fingers that overlooks the whole Puget sound way back in the 70s. I will never forget those sunsets.
The trees that you were looking at that have the reddish trunks are called Madrone. You are correct the area known as the San Juan Islands and the gulf islands are a treasure for those of us in the Northwest. Although as you pointed out in the summer we don’t get a lot of wind we do get beautiful weather and scenery. Although August and end of September around here is referred to as Fogust. We get a lot of fog.I enjoy your videos very much thank you for the virtual ride
Beautiful place! I love hearing that the climate is like New England but the islands are like the Bahamas. And there are whales. Inspiring. I watch about 15 sailing channels with folks going all over the world. My wife's from WA, I'm from the northeast, and we started our married life in Miami. But I think if we do a charter, I'll vote for the San Juan islands rather than the Keys or Bahamas.
Great place to transition from the road. Best of both worlds. Even Jetty looked happy to be back on the water. Love this channel more every year. Love that we get to tag along on your adventures, whether on land or water. Man, you guys are living the life.
Madrona Trees are glorious. As are the San Juan’s. So excited you took that route! I don’t get the water view very often. Thanks for your Journey’s✨✨💫⭐️🌎✌️✌️✌️❤️❤️❤️🌄🌌👀🦭🦝🦔🐿🦨🦌🐕🦐🦀🦖🦖🐋orca…..
Absolutely awesome episode! The storytelling, the videography, the area, the boat, Jetty, the food, and of course you guys - just everything is superb! Looking forward to more.... Thanks!
The red barked trees are Arbutis. Known in USA as Pacific Madron. Related to blueberries. If you like the San Wan's, definitely explore coastal BC and Alaska too.
12:27 Billy if Sierra is “Planning your next move” I’m wondering if she is Conspiring to Fall in love with you: FOREVER! Congratulations to you BOTH. Blessings to you.
It's so fun watching you guys get blown away by our west coast. This is where I grew up cruising and exploring. Those red trees with the peeling bark are called "Arbutus" trees and they're pretty synonymous over here. It's too bad you only had 6 days because you could spend a lifetime up and down the PNW. I'm on the Canadian side and as interesting as the San Juan's are the gulf islands are equally amazing. Montague Harbour is a great place with the "mushroom rocks" and the "Indian caves" and the fishing and prancing and shellfish are legendary. OMG, you didn't bring bananas on a boat did you? Lol. My first trip out on the commercial fishboats is broke two of the superstitions you never do. I brought a black cd case full of cd's on board. Then one night I went to bed to find all my cd's strewn on my bed and the case was never seen again. So glad you are going to Stuart Island. Spent a whole summer there fixing up a cabin. Did lots of sailing, diving and exploring the island. Took lots of B vitamins to keep the biting bugs away. Meet an old guy living in small cabin named Little Wolf. A legend during the rum running days. You guys brought back so many awesome memories ❤ Thank you so much and looking forward to each episode 😀 Wpw when I was there in mid 80's no one was there. Such a beautiful island and good to see so many others enjoying it. ❤
I live in the San Juans on Lummi Island and I've been following you guys now for some time. If you want to see some Orcas, anchor off of Lime Kiln Lighthouse on the west side of San Juan Island. There's no guarantee that you will but that seems to be the likeliest place to encounter them. You may want to check in with a commercial whale-watching business in Victoria, BC to see what channel they monitor when taking people out whale watching. The charter company that leased you the boat may have some info as well. Good luck!

Hey Cuz, I spent three months on San Juan Island at the University of Washington Biological station. Dove nearly every day in a 1/4" wetsuit, 52 degree water; recomend a drysuit. Beautiful video of a stunning area. Look for orcas north of Orcas Island.
I live on my 40 ft aluminum landing craft in Ketchikan Alaska, just so ya know it rains 150 inches a year here so there must be a reason someone would put up with that, right. also plan on doing a lot more motoring in these waters, it's not open ocean sailing. Great video's thanks
Great video you guys!!! We have been stationed here in Washington since April 2018 and are about to have to move to Mississippi. I love Puget Sound and the San Juan Islands. But one of the things I will miss the most are the whales specifically the orcas (southern residents and transients). There is nothing like seeing them in the wild. So awesome that you are catching good weather. We've been out there 4 times, never saw orca's. I think your best bet is when you are out west of San Juan island.
Super interesting to hear those orange/red trees with papery bark called "madrone" trees. Up in in BC we call them Arbutus trees. Very specialized to grow within a few kilometres of the ocean. Seem to really need the salt air. Great videos.
You don't mention Vancouver Island, but if you get a chance to visit Victoria on Vancouver Island you should take it. It's a beautiful city and the rest of the Island is mostly rainforest. One of my favorite places in the world.
I can't wait till you have the new boat seeing both of you so happy makes my day you are both great and deserve the best life has to offer orca hint hint

Those are arbutus trees the shed their bark . The wood is very heavy and hard. You' ll find them all the way up the coast
It's so fun watching you guys get blown away by our west coast. This is where I grew up cruising and exploring.
