    i've heard this happens first time you start up a jet turbine because they're filled with some kind of oil in the factory to prevent the engine from degrading until it's installed in a plane.

      Dissatisfied Gamer you would have heard %100 correct. It’s a preservation oil or inhibitor that prevents the engine from being damaged by moisture during transportation and storage. ..

      Correct. The first startup just cycles all of the preservation fluid out. Completely normal.

    It’s called 10/10 oil. It preserves a new engine/rebuild until its started. When started it burns off the oil, when fuel is introduced to the combustion chamber.

      @@Groveish it is off hand referred to as clean diesel any diesel vehicle will happily run off it and it will run some what better. its bean over a year since i last looked in to the prices but i remember that jet fuel was cheaper then diesel at one point but you cant just rock up to an airport and ask them to full up you car.

    Testing in a run-up area, no passengers. The preservation oil used in shipping is burned off the first time the engine is run.

      That is what my Victa 2 stroke lawn mower does when i turn it on the side to work on it and it smokes like that for a bit on start up.

    Starting with the wind up the tailpipe? I assume it was a strictly idle run for leak checks. No blast fence.

      Ted Smith yes. Wind changes and we couldn’t be stuffed re moving it. And yes. You’d be correct. Only need to do idle run for new engine test these days.

      Not off hand. But it is very tolerant. The FADEC is very smart in this engine and will protect during the start in a massive tailwind. I’ve had 40 + knots and it wasn’t a problem.

    99 percent of folks don't know, or care to know. This is a first start on an engine. Have any idea how little preservative oil it takes to make that volume of smoke? Very little.

      the factory cover the engine components in preservation oil so they don't get damaged or oxidised during shipping that oil burns off on first start up

      NICOCRAFT yes. It’s the first start of a new engine fitted. It’s blowing out and burning all the inhibitors that protect the engine. It runs clean once it’s burnt away and doesn’t do it again.

      @@dragoner3211 because it's true. New engines out the factory or after extensive maintenance have a film of oil inside. When the engine is switched on for the first time, the oil is burnt hence the smoke.

    Looks too short to be a 737 especially with two E-exits being on 800 series or newer. Looks more like an A320 which also came with CFM56 engines.
