The more line you have out the more tension on the fish. The further out the marlin get you have to slowly back off the drag it seems counterintuitive, but it’s what the best in the world do.

I don't know how but when you have a big fish on, you get a feeling that you are not going to catch that fish. And sure enough the hook comes out, the line randomly breaks or some other stupid thing like a shark or a bigger fish just comes and eats it.
