People with depression hurt in ways that normal folk aren't capable of understanding, because 'normal' people have brain chemistries that function as they should. With depressed people, their brains are a psychedelic mess of chemicals; producing too much seratonin, or not nearly enough, etc. In other words, even if you traveled right back to the moment he was about to take his life, even if he knew the void he would leave behind, that wouldn't necessarily have prevented future attempts.

Swing is from the 30s, not the 20s. It started in 1935. It evolved out of 20s jazz which is probably what you're thinking of.
