    I make acid tracks have done for 20 plus years, This new Roland gear is v fucking good.
    The people being critical, have they actually owned Roland gear? Do they know the early machines? have they owned, Tb 303s,106's,101s.Mc202s etc etc I somehow doubt it . I have not heard any legitimate criticism from those of us who have been into it all since 88.This gear will keep us all afloat equipment wise whilst all the rich kids buy up the shit and knackered machines we wouldn't want now.
    Nice one Roland.

      Yeah, for $300 is this a great machine. I did not see anybody offering a Cyclone TT-303 or a good working X0xb0x for $300, either. Who can afford to pay over $2000 for the real TB-303? The TB-3 is not perfect, neither are X0xb0x and TT-303. But honestly, there are not many people which can tell the difference. As long they produce good sounding Acid, I can live with it.

    • @Degenerative1

      I have owned and modified enough 303s . They really do sound different to each other.
      It is what is in the groove that counts , nothing else!!

      Degenerative1 People hear what they want to hear, Its not a TB-303 so they hear a difference thanks to the placebo effect, it's been widely tested and show that people will think they hear a difference simply but wanting to hear a difference.
      You could also argue that because its digital they sound all exactly the same, while the TB-303's have variations in production, I've wired up a headphone amp, it has no contest with the 1% tolerances in resistors, compared to the precision of a float32 @ 0.000006%
      This TB-3 probably sounds like the original spec implies it should sound like, or perhaps Roland has one lying around that they used to model it after.

    It does in fact sound rather good, I wish theyvhad included more editable parameters rather than a bunch of presets for both the synth voices and effects. It will be easy to recreate the old school acid sound with the tb3 but will be hard to push it much further into new sounds I think.

    a bit late to the party...l i wanted one of these in the late 1990s, this is what the MC303 should have been, but ended up being such a load of garbage.. saying that, its nice to finally see a proper reincarnate of the classic 303 by roland after all these decades... i cannot fault the sound going by the videos. i like it, but i wont be buying it because i still have the original TB303 :-)

    • @jessermejia
      @jessermejia 10 лет назад

      The 303 didn't have swing. His sequence does. Hard to compare tightness with some unknown new swing element in the mix.

    • @mas3974
      @mas3974 10 лет назад

      Jesse Mejia I didn't say it had swing. I have synched a 909, 303 and a 606 and they just compliment and work off each other so well. They actually groove off each other in a way that the new models don't. Have a try it it sounds great. Maybe I could be wrong re the new machines, because I'm just judging them from this video.

    I am staggered by people that use the release of this machine to say how bad this is and how good the 303 is. I just want to say, WAKE UP! the original 303 is way more limited, certainly not more user friendly, and the sound difference is marginal, especially when you compare the value. I have been looking out for this successor for about 10 years now, and the TB-3 i just got is worth every cent i spent on it. Offcourse if you want to spend €1500 for a 30 year old machine youre welcome. and a bit silly...

  • @TheGloveny

    I've got one of these.
    I'm over the moon that I can finally make some acid noises. People who moan that about Acid being dead. Clearly not Get outta the house and take your shitty EDM and dubcrap with you and leave us to indulge ourselves, soulless intruder!
    My criticisms:
    I wish the ENV mod control was on another knob and not on the touch screen, because you have to change the function of the touch screen before you can use it.
    The knobs are too close together, but it does enable me to use my fingers differently.
    Only a few of the scatter options are any good in my opinion.
    The effect knob: I'd like to be able to select what effect is used, not what the programmer thought was best for each sound being played. (I hate being told what to do).
    Not a great look. Resembles an 80's games machine.
    But....a fucking wicked machine.
    The X/Y play is like a theremin on steroids which can make industrial to soundscape atmospheric sounds.
    Endless tweaking of controls and pitch.
    Well worth the money I rekon. And it's small and light.

    This looks good, but it just feels way too late. And no reason why it couldn't be analog. The X-Y controls etc. are additions to the original obviously, but if effects are your thing, you could do far more with a KP3 off the back. Like I've been doing off my Korg ESX for the last 4 years. A true analogue re-release would have been far better. Shame. Great review though.

  • @benbooth32
    @benbooth32 10 лет назад +3

    I really don't understand the sound/preset stuff. I mean, Roland could just have done it the normal way, with a switchable square/saw oscillator and that's it, or even new waveforms, but instEad we've got those 30 preset, and although the 2 first one sounds pretty good maybe half of the others are unusable..
    And that Scatter stuff........
    And no env. mod or decay knob..... COME ON !!
    This just confirms that Roland are just greedy toy makers who just wants everyone to buy their little SkrillexBoxes, and they don't even care about the quality of the sound

    • @jimmywheelo
      @jimmywheelo 9 лет назад

      Spot on. It looks and sounds fantastic....but presets????
      Big error and that's what's stopping me wanting one. Also you can't make a 303 clone without all the sound shaping options either. That is fatal imo.
      A TT303 looks more and more appealing

  • @psynapsurfa
    @psynapsurfa 10 лет назад

    I personally think the sound is weak and sounds way too generic and processed. it sounds nothing like the original boxes, and offers no where near the sound shaping ability of the originals.
    It is like Roland think that the only way these boxes got used was for acid squelch.
    And the squelch is way too clean and gentrified.
    Sure, they may be fun to play, but why not have this fun interface, even if it is too bright for me, but why no t have it as the front end for a serious reproduction of the analog osc, with fulll sound shaping abilities and the benefit of digital patch memory and also the digital effect section if necessary.
    Roland had a chance to do something special, but they read the map wrong, took a wrong turn and ended up at the dullsville cheese factory.
    Thankfully we have Elektron, and Dave Smith and others.

      *****
      I was referring to the machines themselves.
      All the day glo backlit madness...
      We do not need all these instruments looking like a video arcade.
      All these lights just tire the eyes. And I feel they are used a distraction away from the faults of the instruments that are too numerous to even attempt a list.
      I find everything about this release cheesy. From the teaser video clips with labtwits in white coats to people talking about what a tr-808 meant to them.
      Anyway, i could care less really, as Elektron have surpassed Roland now. [with no backlit child toy appearance]. Real Analog synths and drum machines, and not to forget their digital boxes also. Digital boxes that do allow serious shaping of sound, not just tweaking a few presets in pre-dertermined parameters.
      That is the main problem with these Roland boxes. I am not really perturbed by the digital nature of these instruments, I have good qual digi, so am not against it, but I find the limited nature of the sound shaping to be absolutely offensive, when it could have been left open ended for us to do as we please.
      It also could have been made digital very simply as so many others are proving. Solid reliable digital with patch memory makes analog boxes of today far more advanced than yesteryear, but with the same sound.
      So I also find Rolands excuses fo rnot going analog, or even partially analog to be cheesy also.
      Every single thing about this reeks of treating the market place with contempt.
      I seriously doubt that this range will become legendary. sure they will get hype for a while, a few years maybe, but they will not last. Even the kids they are aimed at will grow up and eventually want real grownups instruments, not toys. And their eyes will tire as well.

    • @tronic307
      @tronic307 10 лет назад +1

      psynapsurfa technoshaman
      These instruments have ALL the controls from the originals, just the ENV Mod on the TB-3 is performed on the touch pad. The TR-8 has EVERY knob from the 808 and 909, with the additions of compression for the kick and snare and pitch for all instruments. Did you even have a glance at the front panel?
      If a break dancing, stutter editing, graffiti writing, 80s NYC megamixer like me thinks these seem fun, then your approval isn't necessary. Go get some Korg Volcas, or the awesome Elektron RYTM which sound nothing like the Roland gear from the 80s, or go spend five figures for the three boxes these emulate.
      The 808 was a $500 toy for kids like me who couldn't afford a $3000 digital Linn Drum way back when. Now the shoe is on the other foot in every possible way, and I couldn't possibly be more okay with it.
      The snobs can all go kick rocks already. In fact, I just sold my MC-202 and guess where the money is going? I think I might have got enough for it to buy all 4 AIRAs.

  • @nafrosounds

    Looks a bit of a let down to me, cheap looking, not enough features for the money, not massively keen on the touch screen idea which has been done and done again already nothing new there and obviously just a cheap gimmick. The fact is people want knobs, switches, sliders and who is going to use that scatter feature which has just been stolen from the Korg Kaos family, another crappy gimmick. If it comes down in price I may buy it but its priced too high for basically a toy version of the original, why didn't Roland aim for a mid range 303 similar price to the xoxbox but stay true to the original but update the sequencer and bundle it with dsp effects similar to the MC series but done well, its not rocket science if it isn't broke don't fix it just improve it, I think Roland have lost the plot really, when you look at the likes of the Analog 4 and Dave smith instruments, even Korg are putting valves in stuff....... :/ And to the reviewer there's nothing clever about playing two machines together using a midi cable!!!
