This channel made me buy a TB-3 😀 Then I download the Dope Robot editor and found all the lovely extra things it could do. Then I modified the Dope Robot editor to load and save patterns separately and a few other things so it worked more the way I wanted. I sent the changes back and they are now in the latest version. Love the TB-3 3rd party community.
Been following this channel since it came out. I never watched it to be influenced into buying a synth, purely for the laughs and the great jams, but after some pretty rough experiences with the Behringer TD-3 being so hard to program I give this one a whirl after watching this. I can't believe how good the workflow on this synth is for acid basslines!!! Thank you for this video and links to the software, this one is living on my desk now!!
I have two of these now. I’ve been using synths since the late 1980s and this one is the best to jump in and start laying down tracks. It’s ridiculous looking but as soon as I used one, I was convinced it was the GOAT 💯💯💯
I had one (greeny tb3) for a few years and really did enjoy it. Once I got my Elecktron A4 (the OG version used on eBay :)… I sold the tb3 with no regrets. The A4 should get a Bad Gear video… it doesn’t seem to get much love…. but makes beautiful sounds and noises:)
Thanks for sharing the Dope Robot TB-3 editor. I've been looking an editor that makes programming the TB-3 easier. The only other TB-3 editor I heard about was developed a long time ago and is no longer available
Like everyone else I jumped straight onto EBay. There was a mint condition TB3 for £180 By the time I clicked into it, it had sold 😂 Lucky I’m in the box these days. I did have one of these a few years back. It sounds great. I never knew there was a lot more under the hood. Another great episode AP
@@AudioPilz It’s like the Hainbach pricing effect, but for bad gear instead of ancient test equipment and obscure soviet era synths. If there was a used synth stock market you could get rich by placing put options before your reviews. Or make terrible demos and short the crap out of them.
I absolutely love mine and have used it for live shows and productions for years, such variety and options. Love the scatter for having fun with unique variations to patterns in real time. It’s great. The ONLY function that I wish was an option is: Midi pattern change via midi program change numbers. And this is why: You can already save specific voices per pattern to be recalled when the pattern is played,it will change to whatever voice you saved with it,SO if there was a way to change the patterns via midi program messages per an external midi sequencer simply selecting different midi program changes,it would ABSOLUTELY be the perfect evolved digital acid (and further) machine. And it would truly utilize the machine to its fullest potential. I feel like this is the one function that fell through the cracks that would have made this unit unstoppable in so many more ways.. Everyone loves choosing patterns live,(including me) but to be able to change patterns through midi would have been the ultimate cake icing.. I’ll still use it as is,but I can only imagine how much more amazing this unit would have been with that function. It would serve every kind of music production genre, and I bet it could even help create a few more at extremely high speed changes of patterns during high tempo productions as well. (Super acid Gabber, anyone?😏)
@@sydmclay No it’s pretty quick if the screen is clean and working correctly, manually, and when using it as it’s own controller it’s best to take it out of midi clock sync for less midi hiccups.
Hey @AudioPilz thanks for the shoutout! Don't even think I knew the sine wasn't affected by the filter! (although I did read on the internet one time you can't filter a sine) It's kinda freaky encountering someone else who knows this machine as well as I do, you even knew its two bugs!! Just kidding, that's awesome and happy to be helping TB-3 users out there get everything out of this super little box. Great video, you created a TB-3 character arc! Maybe the first synth to star in its own movie?!?
“Honey we accidentally left the synth open”. I’ve wondered if this was the case because Roland’s new gear has a mysterious absence of sysex and therefor editor ability (MC101/707). This is a future classic, I knew it early on and got mine cheap when it was shunned as unauthentic. You are accelerating future classic status, hope your stockpile is good 😂
I have been noticing how good it's been sounding recently. Suddenly everyone discovers that a bit of a failure is not so bad after all especially after the little boy in the Emperor's new clothes story (that's you Florian) says nice suit. When will Uli do the copy? Probably when the price hits 1000 currency units.
The TR8 is some standalone excellent-ness, but I really do generally love the look of the weird green Aria range (got to go, Nurse says it's someone else's turn)
I had the same affinity for my Korg EA1, the original plastic Mattel quality electribe, it was fun ramming it thru a bass amp and cheap FX pedals, kinda miss it
Wow just can’t get over the idea of a ‘Good Gear’ video. Things I’d love to see. 1. My beloved MC101 forgiven 2. NTS-1 mkII 3. Yamaha SeqTrak 4. Behringer JT4000 micro better add the Pro VS too 5. woovebox 6. Micromonsta II Would love to see reviews even if the end up on BadGear 😊
Love the LED block aesthetic. Kinda want one to match my KP3+. Still figuring out the Kaoss pad in band jams but they like the looping spooky sound ambience. Do you know of any similarly styled step-sequency things to use for sending midi loops to other synths? I want more light up things but think I really need to get a Polyend or MPC or Launchpad to sequence my synths w/out computer
WHEN is the Jomox Mbase gonna get its own episode? It's like the most recurring-est guest-star in the whole Bad Gear universe, but never gets the spotlight!
The TR-8 was the first ever drummachine I bought and I still use it to this day, it just works, sounds solid and I love the simplicity of it. I wish there was an editor like for the TB-3 but so far I haven't found one that is even remotely as capable.
absolutly on point. That maschine is underated and on of my favourites as well. use it all the time. and once you made your own patches you gonna love it even more. b21 is just a solid sine 😅
You should totally make a series about synths and other music gear from wish and all those sites there’s some hilariously bad stuff and I think people would love it
I also have the VT-3. If you do an episode on it can you go over the MIDI via USB and if it works rather than using the auto pitch and if it's any good. I didn't know it was a thing but supposedly u can send the vocoder MIDI notes but it has issues or something.
My biggest issue with the TB 3 is that it's a digital simulator of a bassline machine and I could never get an ounce of actual bass out of it. Even through this video - not a single drop of anything bassy. Low in the register and heavy in the lower mids so it kinda "sounds" heavy, but compared to other reissues and clones it feels thin as paper. Other than that tiny issue - I've always believed that the AIRA lineup is incredibly versatile and fun to use. I have a bunch of gear which is extremely sound-porny sounding (Analog Rytm 2, Prophet 8 Rev2, Slim Phatty, TX81Z, DX 200, Korg EMX etc) but from all the gear I posses the TR 8s is by far the most fun I can have with a unit, to a point that it's the only piece of gear I'll bring out to my DJ sets as well. Additionally, the intensity of updates they throw out for it is comparable only to the Elektron gear. Kudos to Roland for giving their best on that one.
TB-3 really is underrated synth. Have you used/tried CC control with Digitakt? I always forget the mapping numbers and have to look them up but at least cutoff/resonance is quite convenient to control, especially if Digitakt is the main device in the setup.
Instantly this video is one of my favorites with my ownership of a TB-3 that I bought a couple of years ago without any prodding by anyone lol 😂 Even though I have not used it as much as I hoped, I still recognize its power and flexibility. I only knew of a couple of TB-3 editors and I will soon look and compare them to the ones I have installed. Your idea of having 2 TB-3s is very eye opening and I know that with the speed your video is being viewed that I better get in line for another one asap. Was there another model issued? I don’t remember seeing the step sequencer on mine even though I connected it within the past 2 weeks. Here are 2 ideas that came to me today while watching your video that you may wish to implement: Let your Patreon users know in advance the gear you will have upcoming episodes of before everyone else. 2. The same community could also share tracks with the same gear used while networking with each other. Thanks again for sharing this video and keep going strong! 💯🎯🎉👑
Holy shit this is awesome! I just picked up one of these yesterday. I first bought a TB-03 because I wanted a 303 and this was (in my eyes) the next best thing. After watching your videos and seeing you using the TB-3 almost all the time, I decided to get one. Glad I did! Thanks for reading, and I'll see you next time.
Love this! Both the ep and the TB-3. I love mine, and I can’t be the only person here who was motivated a little bit to buy it by the OG BG ep, and the fairly obvious subsequent backsliding…
I am convinced that just about ANY synth can do incredible things if you just have the patience to really dive into it. You just have to quit lusting over gear, stay off yt and reverb and learn the damn thing in and out. They are pretty much all engineered by brilliant minds and you can 10x what any gear review vid can show you if you just stick with and LEARN the gear you have. Just remembee that limitations can breed innovation. If you think your gear is incapable, try to find another way. Don't just give up and move onto the next big fad.
I like your usage of the term “bread-and-butter” to describe the delay feature o the TB-3, AP. It occurs to me that every 303 emulation I’ve been con’s IOU’s of includes a delay feature. I was at least made aware of that precedent when I grabbed up the Propellarhead emulation.
"We don't chase Ghosts" They've done nothing but rerelease the digital versions of their classic synths for decades. LOL. Don't even get me started on what they've done to the Juno name.
toldya! imma zouldjah! what an excellent re-presentation! Filter knob house image... ketaminized! I sincerely think it's the most most fun repro of the original yet... Soundz friggin excellent! Been waiting for this one for a while now Florian! Thank you! Thank you for listening to your fans! Only thing I miss is the cutoff going allt he way to zero... I'm okay with the rezt of zadnezz.. I'm sure doperobot will get around to it at zum point :) 4k views within an hour? Speaks4itzelf :) Again, thank you! been waiting for this one! you nailed it, again!
I just digged out my TD-3 from the synth closet this week. IT IS LOUDER than the rest of my gear combined and seems to eat up all avaliable space in the mix, whatever I do with it. I struggle to find a "dry" square wave. The XY-pad for decay/envelope is confusing and it is a little too bright. However. It does sound massive. I've played around with a patch editor, but not dived into it
Thanks! I will try it out. I have also experimented with sequencing the TD3 from a novation cirquit tracks. It lets you create a custom set of midi controls that can be motion sequenced like anything on the OG Cirquit. Try it out! And thanks for great content, always.
Have been using this since it was originally released (my first 303 clone instrument) . The touchscreen interface can be really frustrating (and I miss the touch of real buttons), but I agree the range of sounds and associated effects is impressive. Will have to seek out the editor software you're demonstrating! Looks great
When the ability to control the sound engine on these became a thing it was so awesome opened up a lot of doors. I almost always had mine synced to a korg ea1 or the sh-32 would have them playing the same lines then play with it in the mixer bouncing back and forth and often running the output of the tb03 through the filter of the ea1 with it playing its own sequence then the ea1 looping through a shorter filter sequence letting the output of the tbo3 through as ocs1 was able to create some really interesting stuff that way. Also really liked using these together with the og kaos pad and or the ef303.
That distortion filter is very nice! My first big boy keyboard ‘synth’ was a Yamaha SY85. They are super cheap nowadays but I believe still have a great sound set. Be interesting how you’d use one in 2024! A Korg MicroX would also be a good one.
FIRST of all I love your vids!! Very funny and also informative! I recently bought a TB-3 AND a TR-8 at a ridiculously low price online. The TB3 blew my mind! To me it sounds amazing and of COURSE the first thing I did was program DA FUNK and mangle the knobs! I had ZERO IDEA there was an editor!!! Im going to definitely check that out! THANK YOU for all the cool videos! SUBSCRIBED
noice.. did nt expect that much under the hood. (ringmod, sample & hold, some more fx etc..) will def. give the editor a try.. i used mine in a couple of tracks, and like how well it sits in the mix... but the appearance/design.. damn..:)
Hmm... the mystery of the IKEA glass. In this episode the water level was constantly changing like a weird square wave (full (0:00) -> almost full (3:17) -> half full/empty (7:32) -> almost full (8:28) -> full (8:45).
Thankfully got one new at a run out sale for a ridiculous price. Mind you, the ACB emulation in the T-8 comes as a handy budget friendly, 2nd 303 in my set up.
And you can find them on the internet for ridiculously low prices.... not any more.. Question Can you use it as an external sequencer, and get all the accent/slides to carry across (via CC) usably? Some of my favourite lead lines in history are a 303 sequencing other synths via CV!
The Dope Robot TB-3 editor really changes the game for this little box! However, I noticed that if you extend the VCA release for any patch, the TB-3 sequencer drops the release-phase of the note to C0, regardless of what the actual note was (at least on my unit). This behaviour stops if you sequence the unit from an external sequencer, but the TB-3 clock/sequencer has to be stopped. Start the TB-3 sequencer and the release shift of notes to C0 starts up again, even when sequenced externally. I can't seem to find a way to stop this. Do other TB-3 units exhibit the same behaviour?
I bought one used, i updated the firmware, but i have issue saving the paterns. Mine it doesn't save my patterns...Does happened too to somebody? Thanks Its amazing the touch screen for programming the sequences. The original Tb303 was really crap in comparison
Was about to pull the trigger on a 2nd hand unit, but was wondering if I really need one.. Having already the small T-8, the TD-3 and lots of other monosynth i fear i will play with it a few days and then leave it collecting dust. I understand that the UI might be interesting in a live situation though... Besides, i have read concerns about the reliability of the unit if tweaked with the external editor... Hard choice...
I am considering buying my one to use with my Deluge. However am I correct in hearing the TB-3 doesn't recognise programme changes? So that means I can't change to user saved patterns using Midi from the Deluge?
So are the editors controlling the Aira midi CC listings in the manual or…? This looks like they made a standard AIRA voice, ported it to various formats, and enabled/disabled features accordingly(so the system 8 is the most expansive poly option). I wish more stuff was hacking-friendly after being discontinued like MI.

Great stuff!!! Thank you so much for your work. You make all this possible!!!
Dude, rock on!
Same here!!!
The Dope Robot editor is fantastic! Adds so much more 😎
Good grief! Had no idea you could get under the hood on this beastie! I'm off to find an editor! Thx dude! 😁 ♥ 🎶 🎹
Always a pleasure😀😀😀
I've just watched your first video on the TB-3 from 4 years ago, and surprisingly this videos was recommended next.
When the algo gets it right;)
I had one (greeny tb3) for a few years and really did enjoy it. Once I got my Elecktron A4 (the OG version used on eBay :)… I sold the tb3 with no regrets. The A4 should get a Bad Gear video… it doesn’t seem to get much love…. but makes beautiful sounds and noises:)
Great suggestion, thanks!!!
Holy crap, that jam with the digitakt had me bopping! I would absolutely get a pink AudioPilz signature model haha
Whenever I think of an M1 I think "House Piano"
No truer words have even been said.
Better than a sore thumb;)
Thanks for sharing the Dope Robot TB-3 editor. I've been looking an editor that makes programming the TB-3 easier. The only other TB-3 editor I heard about was developed a long time ago and is no longer available
Like everyone else I jumped straight onto EBay.
There was a mint condition TB3 for £180
By the time I clicked into it, it had sold 😂
Lucky I’m in the box these days.
I did have one of these a few years back. It sounds great. I never knew there was a lot more under the hood.
Another great episode AP
Thank you so much!!! It's usually just a small peak;)
@@AudioPilz It’s like the Hainbach pricing effect, but for bad gear instead of ancient test equipment and obscure soviet era synths. If there was a used synth stock market you could get rich by placing put options before your reviews. Or make terrible demos and short the crap out of them.
My tb3 is also heavy use gear. Kinda wanna get a second unit like you did.
Two are the absolute minimum!!!
I absolutely love mine and have used it for live shows and productions for years, such variety and options. Love the scatter for having fun with unique variations to patterns in real time. It’s great. The ONLY function that I wish was an option is:
Midi pattern change via midi program change numbers.
Great input, thanks!!!
Is is slow switching patterns on the unit itself?
You are accelerating future classic status, hope your stockpile is good 😂
Thank you!!! Working on it!!!
Finally! You did it! And what a great review. Many thanks!
Thank you so much!!!
Digital stuff like this isn't as easy to clone but in Uli we trust;)
Akai Timbre Wolf gonna make a comeback!
YOOOO, you took my suggestion! Fucking awesome man!
Always a pleasure❤️❤️❤️
The TR8 is some standalone excellent-ness, but I really do generally love the look of the weird green Aria range (got to go, Nurse says it's someone else's turn)
😂😂😂
I still like the Matrix green better than the destroyer CIC at battle stations red of the JD-Xa/i .
@@mrz80 totally!
I had the same affinity for my Korg EA1, the original plastic Mattel quality electribe, it was fun ramming it thru a bass amp and cheap FX pedals, kinda miss it
Love it!!!
Wow just can’t get over the idea of a ‘Good Gear’ video.
Things I’d love to see.
1. My beloved MC101 forgiven
2. NTS-1 mkII
3. Yamaha SeqTrak
4. Behringer JT4000 micro better add the Pro VS too
5. woovebox
6. Micromonsta II
Would love to see reviews even if the end up on BadGear 😊
Great input, thanks!!!
Wow I got it 10 years ago :) And thanks to your videos it's my main midi controller
Nice!!!
It's THE bass drum for me!!!
@@AudioPilz please don't do it before i get a chance to buy a used one
I really like the new video formats you’re producing now, keep them coming.
Thank you!!!
Agreed!!!
With over 800 preset sounds and patterns, I switched to the Phoscyon 2 vst. No shame. 👍
These have become super rad!!!
Ok Im gonna get this, I've wanted one for years, this just seals the deal, thanks AudioPilz!!
Nice, happy to hear that!!! Thanks!
the mc303 video playing when you reference the tb303 is peak meme
Thank you!!!
Oh how the tables have turned. I love it. I hope you and yours are well friend
Thank you so much!!! All the best!!!
This is one of my longest standing questions on this channel.
I hope it is hereby answered;)
The TB-3 is great! I love that you can randomize both patttern (notes) and accent/slide/octaves separately. So easy to get something going.
You should totally make a series about synths and other music gear from wish and all those sites there’s some hilariously bad stuff and I think people would love it
Great idea, thanks!!!
I also have the VT-3. If you do an episode on it can you go over the MIDI via USB and if it works rather than using the auto pitch and if it's any good. I didn't know it was a thing but supposedly u can send the vocoder MIDI notes but it has issues or something.
instant thumb up for BadGear, always .🤩
Thank you so much!!!
Where is the intro?
It's not Bad Gear (the intro music of the original episode is in the outro tho;)
Thank you! Have to explore a bit :)
Dang it, the nerds under the bridge aren't goth. They are industrial dorks.
😂😂😂
TB-3 really is underrated synth. Have you used/tried CC control with Digitakt? I always forget the mapping numbers and have to look them up but at least cutoff/resonance is quite convenient to control, especially if Digitakt is the main device in the setup.
Instantly this video is one of my favorites with my ownership of a TB-3 that I bought a couple of years ago without any prodding by anyone lol 😂
Even though I have not used it as much as I hoped, I still recognize its power and flexibility.
Thank you!!! Actually Patrons get a warning every Monday;)
Nice, thank you!!!
Please do a "good gear" video with the Yamaha RS7000, the best machine ever :)
Great idea, thanks!!!
Love this! Both the ep and the TB-3. I love mine, and I can’t be the only person here who was motivated a little bit to buy it by the OG BG ep, and the fairly obvious subsequent backsliding…
Thank you!!!
I cannot subscribe to this way of thinking.
Yeah, the Goddess Juno will have her revenge;)
It sounds fantastic and is super fun and inspiring, as with most underrated Roland Aira products.
"patterns are easy if you're used to the 303"
Sorry God, I am not worthy🙏
❤️❤️❤️
@2:22 Were the keys on that Oxygen-8 originally white?! Vintage look = nice!
It's been places;)
Lol everyone looks on eBay and they increase by 400%😅
...and I want a third one;)
@@AudioPilz 😂 and I thought you were GAS proof 😂😂😂🙌
Jeps.....offers are a 245 euro for one.
toldya! imma zouldjah! what an excellent re-presentation!
Always a pleasure!!! Thank you so much!!!
I've played around with a patch editor, but not dived into it
A03 is quite pure, put the XY pad to the upper right position, all other controls to taste
Thanks! I will try it out.
I have also experimented with sequencing the TD3 from a novation cirquit tracks. It lets you create a custom set of midi controls that can be motion sequenced like anything on the OG Cirquit. Try it out!
And thanks for great content, always.
Delightful. That first jam had me harking back to the days of The Grid's Rollercoaster.
Have been using this since it was originally released (my first 303 clone instrument) . The touchscreen interface can be really frustrating (and I miss the touch of real buttons), but I agree the range of sounds and associated effects is impressive. Will have to seek out the editor software you're demonstrating! Looks great
Dope Robot is the GOAT!!!
thanks!@@AudioPilz
SUBSCRIBED
Thank you so much!!!
noice..
did nt expect that much under the hood.
(ringmod, sample & hold, some more fx etc..)
will def. give the editor a try..
i used mine in a couple of tracks,
and like how well it sits in the mix...
but the appearance/design.. damn..:)
Hmm... the mystery of the IKEA glass. In this episode the water level was constantly changing like a weird square wave (full (0:00) -> almost full (3:17) -> half full/empty (7:32) -> almost full (8:28) -> full (8:45).
I tend to film the outro Like/Subscribe-stuff before the verdict and patreon shoutouts are usually filmed the day after
clearly a bipolar square, not a monopolar one
Thankfully got one new at a run out sale for a ridiculous price. Mind you, the ACB emulation in the T-8 comes as a handy budget friendly, 2nd 303 in my set up.
Agreed!!!
And you can find them on the internet for ridiculously low prices.... not any more.. Question Can you use it as an external sequencer, and get all the accent/slides to carry across (via CC) usably? Some of my favourite lead lines in history are a 303 sequencing other synths via CV!
Didn’t analyse CCs but I think it’s just velocity and note length
Have you tried to contact Dope Robot? He’s a super nice and helpful guy
@@AudioPilz good idea. Will do!
I bought one used, i updated the firmware, but i have issue saving the paterns. Mine it doesn't save my patterns...Does happened too to somebody? Thanks
Its amazing the touch screen for programming the sequences.
Thanks for the heads up!!!
I am considering buying my one to use with my Deluge. However am I correct in hearing the TB-3 doesn't recognise programme changes? So that means I can't change to user saved patterns using Midi from the Deluge?
It works with a few restrictions
06:31 I DID look up the french for Delay and there was only the mocking laughter of Vincent Cassel 🤔
It's Sysex AFAIK
