      Yeah, for me the most surprising part was the response we got from iKamper. So many people say the post purchase customer support is outstanding, and I guess my expectations were too high. In retrospect this probably could’ve been resolved if iKamper would’ve sent us an alternative mattress solution, like an Exped or something similar.

    You are supposed to stack one mattress on top of the other before closing. That is why it is leaving a mark on the pad. Most recommend keeping a window open on each side to allow the air to escape as you close the tent.

    Guys, thank you a bunch for your honest review. Also, thank you a lot for putting this video out. I agree with you it
    is very frustrating nowadays to find genuine reviews of the product pretty much anywhere you go. I salute your for
    taking the time to make this video. After hearing your story I do feel disappointed cause I really would like to give
    them a chance and this is really a premium price for the tent. It is not cheap and receiving this level of customer
    service is unacceptable. Damn, you can buy a good used car for this kind of price. Do you mind me asking what other products did you study, please, see if you can share.
    Also, which mattress did you end up buying to ensure the tent was closing, was it comfortable? regards.

    • @KRTLyfe
      @KRTLyfe  3 года назад

      We started with the first gen Smittybilt Overlander XL. I loved that tent but we kinda wanted to try some other tents out. We sold the Smittybilt and got the iKamper. As you can see from this video the iKamper Skycamp was a nightmare for us.
      To make it close properly we ordered a softer memory foam from Amazon. We cut it to size and that did the trick for the most part. The best option I have seen to date if you must have this tent is buying your own Xpeds. They are inflatable mattress. You will need two, which will cost you another $700 dollars on top of the $4K for the tent.
      The good news if you do this is you will be able to leave bedding inside the tent when you close it. The bad news is your tent is now closer to $5k dollars.
      We got a roof next Falcon XL next. We love this tent but it is a bit smaller than the tent sizes we are accustomed to.
      Hope this information helps.

    Sorry you didn't have a good experience. I have had mine for 2 years and my family has camped in it 20+ times. It is a phenomenal tent and I looked at ALL of them before purchasing this one. It was expensive and well worth every penny - we haven't regretted it for a minute and particularly when the weather has turned gnarly while out in it. The quality of the construction, hardware, mounting brackets, struts, cover and tent material are excellent - as is the design and how it functions. It is very sturdy and extremely well made. Maybe you should have purchased from an authorized local dealer, like I did on the front range in Colorado. The service has been exceptional and so has the product. I have never had an issue opening or closing the tent and it is as easy to do both as it is supposed to be and represented to be. For those who allow one person's negative experience to influence what RTT you buy and spend your time in, you will unfortunately buy an inferior product and miss out on a very good investment/experience. I literally can't say enough about how awesome this tent is and how it has brought back the enjoyment of camping again!

      Hello Scott thanks for sharing your awesome experience. We are super happy that you are having the experience, we wish we would’ve had with iKamper.
      I’m not sure how ordering directly from the manufacturer should result in less than stellar post purchase customer care, but it is what it is.
      So you have had yours for 2 years.
      Which version do you have? There are 3.
      The earlier designs are definitely better and function properly. The quality control seems to have also been better with the older versions/models.
      Please let us know, as this information would be helpful for anyone looking at 2nd hand Skycamp.

    So at the 3:18 mark, your iKamper sits lower than my iKamper Skycamp mini sits and I do not have anything extra inside my tent. I even did the mattress swap with memory foam which helps it close easier and still I spend quite a bit of time getting it closed up. Great and VERY informative video!!

    • @KRTLyfe
      @KRTLyfe  3 года назад +1

      So that time lapse you are referring too was after we did the foam swap. It made a huge improvement in getting the tent closed but we still had to force it.
      I also suspect for some reason ( this is only a theory) temperature seems to have adverse effects on this tent. That night when we camped and it was 20F we literally messed around with that tent for almost an hour the next morning trying to figure out why it wouldn’t close.

    • @GX470adventure

      @@KRTLyfe I believe temperature makes a difference. This weekend I was in North Georgia mountains and Sunday morning it was low 30's and it took me 40-50 minutes to close mine even with the mattress swap. The last time I had struggles closing mine was about a month ago it was in the 20's and lack of coffee and patience I'm sure didn't help haha. I never had a problem closing the iKamper however, was unable to close it with my deflated air mattress and sleeping bags. (2ea). By adding the carpet I have enough room to close the iKamper with all my bedding placed on the far side of the entrance. Mattress deflated of course.)

      @@KRTLyfe push all the bulk stuff to the rear towards the left or right (depending on the tents orientation) where there is more room. As you are closing pull both straps at the same time. I know this is an obvious step, but if the sides are pushed in late tent won't close. If the bulk stuff isn't in the perfect place it also won't close. I guess I just got good at doing it. My wife and I also camp almost every weekend. I replaced the stock mattress with an air mattress that is much thicker so now I have to make sure all the air is out before it will close. The closing process now is much longer, but we learned to live with it. At least we get good sleep now, but being able to close the tent in under a minute is impossible. I am more interested in the Desert Armor Tank (great price, package, and lifetime warranty!!) or the Roofnest Condor XL.
    Both brands are made in China, but I can't find negatives on either.
    However, to speak bluntly....piss on ikampers trash product. They pay a TON of money on advertising and positive marketing! Hence the price tag. Very similar to name brand athletic wear.

Closing the latch after that would take an unreasonable amount of force (body weight) To the point that area where the latch is mounted would start to flex.

    Thank you, I was leaning towards the iKamper and because of this post and a few others like it, I have decided to go with another company. It is a shame that a company that charges the money they charge, has to set up a FB Page that discredits legitimate complaints, that right there is shady and a big enough reason not to buy their RTT. I believe it is laziness in the R&D part along with the cheapness of the company to use a top of the line mattress. They remind me of contractors that sell themselves as the top of the line and use the cheapest parts to do the job, it never ends well.

    • @KRTLyfe
      @KRTLyfe  3 года назад +2

      That is exactly what they are, the thing that baffles me the most is how certain users make so many excuses for the tent and the mattress. When you can go buy a Smittybilt for a quarter of the price that will actually work as advertised out the box. Now that we have used 3 different tent designs the Roofnest Falcon XL style is my favorite. CVT also makes the same style with better options IMHO. This design is the easiest we have tried so far especially after that awful iKamper debacle. If you need the space and are on a budget the Smittybilt Overlander is a great buy. You can find them slightly used sometimes for as low as $800.00. I really got my eye on the GFC racing tent. It is a bit smaller but so convenient and easy to remove from the vehicle.

    First off I would like to thank you guys for the video sorry that you were having problems. Secondly i would like to point out i do not own a iKamper tent or any RTT for that matter..... yet. However the issue of a thin pad and the way the iKamper Facebook page treated you guys is relatively normal and let me explain why.
    To understand why you were treated this way by ikamper and getting looked down upon with going public with a complaint you have to understand the origin of where this tent is made. South Korea. I lived there for 3 years and will tell you that when it comes to mattress thickness, the their standards that is a thick mattress. Most Koreans sleep on the floor with a pad like that they dont do mattresses like we do in the US or other parts of the world. And the other thing is it is illegal to publicly complain, humiliate, ect in Korea. Not sure why but there culture has a normalization of if you have a problem you address it to the person/ company privately. So that is more than likely why you got the responses you did from the people on facebook. With what I just said I am in no way defending them I'm just shedding some light as to why it was possibly handled the way it did. Cheers guys

    That is a bummer. Sounds like a good tent that you had to de-bug for the mfr while they played dumb. Shame you felt strongly about getting rid of it because solid camping gear is hard to find. Better luck in 2021 as you say.

      Yeah, the thing is we aren’t the only people that have had this issue. We got responses from people around the world that are having the same issue with recently purchased Skycamp 2.0.
      Unfortunately a lot of them are doing what we did and coming up with their own solutions.
      One person even said they have their child sit on top of the tent while they secure the locks lmao!
      However I’m sure a some people have to be contacting iKamper about this issue.
      No one should pay $4K for a tent and then have to spend another hundred or so to dollars to fix the problems with it.

    Thaanks for the video...time for me to look at other options. It should be EASY for everyone to put away. PS what did you buy next? We are looking at Roofnest Sparrow, or one of the Xl versions of James Baroud for room for 2+ kid

    • @KRTLyfe
      @KRTLyfe  3 года назад

      We went with the Roofnest FalconXL. We love this tent. It opens and closes very quick and extremely easy. The mattress is very comfortable as is and it comes with anti condensation mats. So far it is the only tent we have owned that is perfect out the box. The only downside for the XL is the weight 160 pounds.

      @@KRTLyfe Good choice i think. We have that at the top of our list as well, but wish they made it a little thicker to hold pillows and bags internally. We might go with Sparrow XL instead, or James Baroud tents which do hold everything inside. Thanks for your video!! Subd!

      You are 100 percent correct with the FalconXL you can’t store anything extra inside and we tried it!
      We know someone that replaced the mattress with an exped so they could leave the bedding inside.
      We got our eyes on the GFC super light tent so we don’t want to put too much money into this one. Thanks for the sub we sincerely appreciate it!

    I was actually looking into getting this one and this info has for sure changed my mind. It’s already priced very high and with bad costumer service ( that I’ve heard from other places also) it just seems smarter to shop elsewhere for now. Maybe the 3.0 coming out will be better, but I guess they’ll jack that price up even more and you still get the bad costumer service.

      @@KRTLyfe The new high tech 9 comfort zone mattress in the 3.0 is too firm and not very comfortable. I don't own this tent but did lay on a display model at a dealer. If I bought this tent, I'd demand a mattress delete credit and source a more comfortable option.

      @@patrickio8084 from all the research we did we found the Exped mattress or something similar is the solution for the problems with this tent. The only downside is the two exped mattresses you need will cost you close to $800.00 USD. IMHO not a cheap solution but a viable one if you must have this tent.

      @@KRTLyfe I sleep on a firm 3 inch latex mattress topper and is very comfortable when laying on my back but a little soft when laying on my side as my hips and shoulders tend to bottom out. I weigh 168 lbs so if the person were substantially heavier than that it may not work for them. In hindsight I wish I would have gotten the extra firm and if it were available another inch thickness for a total of 4 inches would have been ideal but I'm using this in a car and might have to have custom mattress covers made to fit this as the factory mattress is only 2 and 1/2 inches thick.
