I’ve had mine for a year now and used 150+ times during trip around Australia. Overall, love the iKamper and no regrets. Three improvements I would love for next version would be 1. Mattress that reduces condensation. On a cold night, the metal floor and condensation make for a freezing night. 2. Canvas catches water in heavy rain. When you leave tent, pool of water runs down onto your back. 3. More storage. I get why its slim, however room for blow-up pillow and sleeping bag needed. Again, really like the tent but the condensation is a major issue.
Hi Edward, could you tell me what truck bed rack you are using. I've had a heck of a time trying to find the right one for my truck. I have a full size Tundra and your setup is perfect for our truck. Thank you for making great videos! My wife and I have learned a lot from them./
Enjoyed the video and your comments very much. Thank you. I am in the market for a rtt. I have a low rise truck bed rack on my Honda Ridgeline 2021. Question for you, I noticed that the length of the IKAMPER is larger than the length of your truck bed.1) What is the distance between the cross bars supporting the tent? 2) Do you have any issues with the rtt extending over the length of the truck bed?. Thank you for your time.
Mr & Mrs Overlander we store two full sized pillows but that’s it. I think a one inch topper could fit if that’s the only additional item you put inside
great video on the follow up. Quick question on your Tundra is it the 5.5' or 6.5' bed? I like how you set it low. what is the cross bar width on the bed and how much over hang at the end by the tail gate. Thanks
You can AirBNB your rig out... lol I'm really happy for you and Katie. Your channel has come a long way. You deserve everything you get out of it, what you put into it is not shown. Thank you for sharing, take care Edward.
The cultural explanation is super interesting! It's so true that not all countries sleep on extra soft mattresses! I've been accustomed to my super-extra comfortable mattress, so buying this tent would necessitate an additional memory foam topper, but not a big deal.
I'm in the middle of fighting this battle, so the timing of the video is perfect. I want a RTT for the convenience, but balancing that against the cost is tough for me. Thanks for listing your opinion, as I value all your experience. I'll see you in two weeks!
One of the BEST and HONEST reviews I have watched. Just great and very explanatory about everything about this camper. Once again congratulations on the new addition to the family brother!!!
Hi Ed, Thanks again for the great video. QQ: Did you intentionally turn your iKamper around to redistribute the weight on your truck, or did you prefer to have the entrance on the driver's side? Thanks
I've been using an ExPed double as my daily mattress at home. It's been close to a year and haven't needed to get a reg mattress yet. I do have to pump up the mattress a little every 3 months, but other than that, it's def. great quality.
Been loving your review videos of the ikamper, but I'm curious of you've looked at the Roofnest Condor XL. It is about 1k less expensive, if you upgrade the ikamper to the rocky black color. It comes with several accessories the ikamper charges for, has a thicker bed. But, I'm not a fan of the latches, the ikamper has great new locking latches. And the new mounting hardware. Would love to know what you think, almost no videos out there on it, aside from a great walk through from the company. Thanks
This tent is #1 on my list but I know that as soon as I buy one (and they are expensive) they will come up with one that includes a better mattress. I am also concerned about the very limited ability to keep sleeping items in the tent. They need to make them so that one can store all of the sleeping bags and pillows in the tent when it is closed.
Thanks again! I’m deciding between this and the Roofnest. Could you tell me if the tent hanging well past your tailgate has worked out? I also have a Tundra. Thanks!
Right now I have an older arb roof top tent I bought used and being little brough around the edges it actually works very well still. I have an older rig but will be updating most if it and soon new rooftop tent will be one. Not sure which one yet. This one I seen on another RUclips and it's very nice. Most everything else is going to be basic items I need to overland. Thank you Edwin for your videos
Good evening Edward , I just read my post and quit a few misspelled words and I misspelled your name. Sorry about that. Hope all is well and loving your baby bump. Will change your life for the better. Thank you, take care and be safe
DJ Hobbies / Overland it’s all good! Thanks for the comments and feedback. I’m looking forward to the baby and sharing the adventures with it soon . You take care and be safe as well out there 👊
Awesome review. Could you let me know what heater that is you are using at 7:14 in the video? I'm considering this rooftop tent. One of the things I do a lot is driving a beach in Jersey for fishing. During the fall to early winter for stripers it gets freezing at night and I'm trying to find a good and safe heater as well to use. Thanks.
Thank you for your review! Do you keep it on year round? I live in Florida and would prefer to keep it on year round, but we will get a lot of rain. How do you feel it would do, just sitting on the rack, closed for months at a time in rain? Also, how about wind when the tent is open?
Very educational, I have spent 3 days researching this and am convinced this is the one for me and my two large dogs... by the way, the dogs will be in the annex. Thanks
Thanks for the great review! I’m wondering how you deal with muddy shoes, wet gear, and such when you are camping with the skycamper. Usually I leave these items in a vestibule but the skycamper doesn’t have this and I don’t think it’s worth the 700$ annex just to solve this need.
have you had any issues with the overhang on your truck bed? I have a 5ft bed ford ranger and I'm really interested in getting the skycamp 2 but that overhang is my only concern. great vid
Ed, thanks for doing this awesome review. I just ordered an iKamper Skycamp 2.0 and have a quick question for you. Did you ever run into a scenario where you ran into high winds that exceeded 20-30 MPH, and if so what was your experience? I am asking because I plan on doing a lot of Colorado high mountain off-highway road camping and I am sure I am going to run into this issue. I know they wind tested this tent to something like 44MPH, but only concern when I made the decision to buy this tent was the recommended max wind rating of 20MPH; which seemed a bit low.
@@jarcidiacono1 after numerous nights in winds (Lake Powell so extremely bad), and high up in the Colorado mountains…it held up great. You’ll have nothing to worry about.
You put out great content sir and I love the iKamper, I picked one up not long ago and love it so far. One thing I run into is storage though since I don’t want to keep it on my suv all the time. Do you know if it can be store standing up vertically?
I really like this RTT minus the cost! The whole aerodynamics of it screams cost savings on gas I think? I really want one of these but can’t bring myself to pull out another grand for. So harsh...
There are many other start up companies that have been releasing them. Although there aren't the reviews of these start up companies but some of them give 30-90 day money back. I took the plunge and I'm waiting for mine to come in with a different brand.
Great review man! I was looking on their website to order one of these guys and it is saying that there is currently an approximate 6 to 8 week lead time on Black and White hardshells from the date of order. Do you think there is a chance it could arrive sooner than that if I ordered one?
Great video and it's so informative since I'm planning to choose my RTT from either ikamper or FSR. I'm planning to leave my tent on the roof rack 24/7 and want to know if ikamper will hold up. Thanks and keep up your great work!!!
Hi Ed! How does this compare to your CVT Mt Ranier you had? I have that currently, and enjoy it but it is huge and heavy and somewhat cumbersome to set up. Thanks bro.
Thanks Edward - really useful. We are almost at the point of spending our hard earned $ on a Skycamp 2.0 and have been a bit worried about the mattress. Can I ask if id you bought just one Exped Megamat or did you buy more than one? If more, how did you arrange them to get the largest sleeping space? Thanks again!
I'm looking to get the roof nest condor. I am going to put an Exped pad in there and I was wondering how you close to the tent with it in there. Does the pad fold over onto itself? or do you deflate it and take it out? I want to leave the pad in the tent but I don't know how it will last when it is folded over on itself.
Nice review. My experience with the iKamper has not been as favorable as yours, but I genuinely appreciate your thoroughness. The Exped suggestion was very helpful. Do you have any suggestions about dealing with iKamper customer service? The have not been easy to reach.
Great review. I love how you showed pictures of the tent in different locations / seasons. Like how you concentrate on what is important i.e. longevity, quality, use, setup. Thanks so much
Great review Edward! I wanted to ask you how you dry your tent out with winter camping. I have been seriously considering this tent and have been watching every review I can on it. At $3500 my main concern is protecting my investment. Can you give me any tips on how you dry your tent out after it has been covered in snow or out in the rain. Do you have a given amount of time before you need to dry it out?
Christopher Karam you definitely want to dry it out as soon as possible after a trip, I’ve gone as long as 3 days before drying, which seems fine depending on your location, but I would look for a covered space to dry it out. It will take longer than drying it out in direct sunlight though. If you don’t have access to covered space, you may want to look at alternatives
Edward Shin, thanks! The trade off of efficient travel size and long term convenience. Packing and unpacking all the time is getting old. Thanks again for the great review.
Awesome review! I have the Mini in Rocky Black and love it so far. Great content on your youtube. Keep up the good work and congrats to you two on the baby!
Do you have any idea when the upgraded mattress will be available? I am looking to get one of these soon and as expensive as it is it would be nice to get the updated mattress.
Great review. I’ve been looking at RTTs for quite some time and starting to narrow it down. I was considering the Tepui ruggedized series or CVT but this fast deployment and size has really peaked my interest. How does it compare in terms of overall quality? Also, durability wise how does it fair when it gets really windy out? I’ve heard RTTs in general aren’t the best in terms of noise as well.
Harper quality is great on this, but many newer tents from other companies have great designs and have high quality as well. It all comes down to your specific needs. Also, usually the noisiest parts of these tents during high winds are the zippers (which have easy fixes you can search 😉)
I'm looking at the TuffStuff Alpha as well. The Alpha does not come with truck bed rails, if you include that in the price then it's similar to the iKamper Skycamp. Are the rails included in the iKamper Skycamp price?
Awesome job! Just wondering how it does in windy conditions. How loud is it? Thank you sir! Keep up the awesome channel! And congratulations on your new baby!
Does the tent leak and get your bedding wet when you have to pack it away wet or snowy? What is your routine if you have to pack it away wet? Do you try to open it up and dry it off as soon as possible afterwards? Have you had any issues with mold?
Great review! I'm getting ready to start a different chapter in my life, I've been an UL hiker/snowshoeing freak and adventure motorcycle rider for decades but now for my new adventures and being in my early 50s I'm deciding to do more overland camping! I just purchased a new Toyota Tacoma and now ready to buy once cry once on a rooftop tent... I've decided to go with a closed shell style rather than a CVT Canvas covering style... How exciting and how nurve racking trying to find reviews on real life reviews... I'm close to narrowing it down to this manufacturer! But I'm open to suggestions!!
Danny Eugene Waits does the speed of setup matter you? Hard shell tents are definitely buy once cry once purchases, which is even more of a reason to make sure you see all your options and compare each tents’ strengths and weaknesses 👍
Thank you for the review! Makes me happy that I got one used at half the cost. True about the culture in Korea. I remember when I visited my uncle there and my bed was a blanket on the hard wood floor. It took some getting use to. One question. Does your exped fit in the tent when closed up? or do you pack that up every time?
Hello 👋 have you had experience with water puddles or snow piling up on the tent? It seems like this might be an issue with how it’s roof area is different? Rain get into the inside while putting it away? Thanks and great video content Edward!
Jaucelyn Nylund not water puddles, but snow can accumulate on the tent tarp, but can easily be pushed off from the inside. Rain won’t get inside the tent, if you zip up all of the doors 👍
Edward are you able to get pillows and a sleeping bag in the tent and still close it? Trying to decide on a 2.0 this week and have heard horror stories about the mattress, is it really that bad?
Chad Stellwagen id be surprised if he could. That’s the main reason I sold mine. And I know for a fact you can’t store that after market mattress in the tent along w two pillows and two bags. iKamper is great but that’s one major disappointment. I ended up downsizing to an alucab gen 3 tent. I added a 2” memory foam topper on top of the 3” mattress it comes with, plus two pillows and two sleeping bags and one down blanket. Closes no problem w/ room to spare. Good luck in your search!
Chad Stellwagen most definitely. Bar far the fastest tent I’ve owned or seen to setup and take down. There are two cons, 1: it’s small. About a full size mattress compared to the king size of the iKamper. But, that also means easier to keep warm, unlike the iKamper since it’s so huge. 2: the ladder it comes with is fixed. There’s no adjustability to it. You can easily buy a telescoping ladder from amazon tho. And then, some additional bonuses, you can hook up power to it. There’s an Anderson plug on the bottom of the tent on the outside. Once you route power there, inside is light switch that powers an led light. You also have a 12v socket and two USB ports. Best tent I’ve owned so far. Good luck in your search!
Rob M it looks like you completely replaced the stock mattress for the aftermarket ones. My comment was around using both stock and aftermarket as well as pillows and sleeping bags. Also, the time and effort it took to deflate those things isn’t worth it for me. I personally wouldn’t purchase a $4800 RTT only to replace the mattress with an after market one one that’s $400 (for one queen size). But, to each their own. The important thing is that it makes you happy. Cheers! ✊🏾
Thanks for posting these. I'm thinking of getting one, but concerned about over hang on my short bed. The racks that look like they'll work best are short when it comes to cab clearance, so I'm looking at 2 feet of overhang off the back
I've been looking into this as well, it looks like the Tundra he's driving has a 5'9" bed for reference if that helps. I'm looking at a Ram with a 6'4" bed so overhang shouldn't be as much of an issue. If you've got a 2' overhang you might want to look into a taller rack so it can clear the cab.
Great review, this year we were up ski/camping and saw a guy use one, I would not have had a clue what it was if I hadn’t watched your videos. That’s cool about the Korean beds sometimes I think the floor is easier on my back.
It fits pretty well, but leaves a gap on the side where the tent folds open. Some people get two pads as a result. I’d recommend checking t,he iKamper Facebook group, as they have the sizes of the two mattresses recommended (I forgot the exact measurements ]
Ryan Hill the bedding wont fit for us, but we do keep two full sized pillows inside when closing. We would push them to the back and to the corner where there is an upward incline on the tent shell body
Edward Shin You recommended the Exped MegaMat Duo 10 Sleeping Pad to replace/upgrade the original one provided by iKamper. Do the dimensions of this new mattress fill the space perfectly edge to edge? Also, are you completely removing the mattress each time you’re closing the tent?
@@alexcruz6737 did you figure this out? I'm curious too although ill say ive got a megamat ive used camping for years, it gets pretty flat but not 100%! curious how this worked out for u?
The Ricky black is great if you anticipate on driving through areas with low hanging branches that may scrape against the tent. What some people have done is get the glossy black and put bed liner on it as well
@@junquiaot3706 the best method would be to take it to either line-x or rhino liner specialist. But if there isn’t one around near you, I would recommend you factor that it will take from half a day to a full day to apply a few coats. So it may be better to just get the rocky black if you really want that feature . But if you don’t plan on having it scratched, the gloss should be fine too
Great review! While I do love the iKamper and the low profile of the hard shell, I just couldn't rationalize spending upwards of $4000 on a rtt. There are a lot of other fantastic models and brands for a few grand less and work just as well. Either way, keep up the great work!
I like the iKamper, but feel that for $3900, there should be no issue with the mattress. All aspects of sleep should be near perfect. Truly, with Smittybilt from $1000-1200, Raptor Offroad Voyager at $900, and Body Armor Skyridge Pike 2 at $800... all rooftop tents, all found with a quick google of "low cost rooftop tents". Great job, Edward. I think they chose you because you come off honest, athletic, and a solid overlander/camper/etc person with a wonderful and supportive family that is looking for quality in the products he uses. peace
Great comprehensive 6 month review of the iKamper. Advantages and disadvantages over your old CVT? Everyone around this region appear to hauling Tepuis and Yakima’s.
ricecowboy definitely faster to setup and break down compared to the cvt soft shell tent, but they now have hard shell tents so that is moot. The iKamper design allows for the benefit of a hard shell in terms of quick deployment and stow away, but also has the benefit of a soft shell tent’s spacious floor plan. Aside from that, I really love both tents
Great review of the iKamper... I have the same setup for my rig, but the one thing I noticed different from yours and mine is the locking mounting brackets. I can lock my shell, but I just took another look and my brackets do not have a locking mechanism. Did that come with your setup out the box? I have the 2.0 version 4X. Also, thanks for the insight on the mattress... I did not know that the influence could've came from the cultural background of the creator. 👊
Edward you didn't mention the main reason why I would want to buy one. The hard shell could be positioned towards the wind so as to not hear the soft material flapping in stronger winds.
I’ve had mine for a year now and used 150+ times during trip around Australia. Overall, love the iKamper and no regrets. Three improvements I would love for next version would be 1. I enjoyed your comments about Korean culture.
Yeah! Really fascinating.

Nicely done, Mr. Shin. This is the most transparent and comprehensive iKamper review I've seen.

Great review! One question, will an additional air mattress fit inside when the iCamper is closed? Thx.
Jeffrey Lubin it would not unfortunately
Thanks! Good review.
Can i leave sleeping bag bed and cloths inside when closed, or do I need to empty it?
Mike Mead you can, but the space is limited. You can probably fit a couple of down sleeping bags and some pillows
Edward Shin, thanks! The trade off of efficient travel size and long term convenience. Packing and unpacking all the time is getting old. Thanks again for the great review.
Great review Edward..
Thank you.
🇺🇸👏👍
Great stuff as usual, Ed! Can't wait for Alvord brother!
MeanOneMeanOne I’m stoked!
Awesome review! I have the Mini in Rocky Black and love it so far. Great content on your youtube. Keep up the good work and congrats to you two on the baby!
Luke King thank you! 🙌
Do these come assembled in the shell? Great set up.
Do you have any idea when the upgraded mattress will be available? I am looking to get one of these soon and as expensive as it is it would be nice to get the updated mattress.
Love your vids! Did you replaced the mattress inside the tent with the Exped Megamat or are you adding it on top of it?
Jean-Francois Groulx thanks, I put it on top of the iKamper mattress, but the shell won’t close with both in it (even with exped deflated)
The iKamper does not come with the bed rack rails
Hi a question for you dothe anexroom have a floor yet cause it didnt in the past pleace tell best regard Goran Melin in SWEDEN
I appreciate the video and candor also I enjoyed your comments about Korean culture
Awesome job! Just wondering how it does in windy conditions. How loud is it? Thank you sir! Keep up the awesome channel! And congratulations on your new baby!
Sergio Galindo it’s not too bad in windy conditions if you can separate the zippers 👍
Does the tent leak and get your bedding wet when you have to pack it away wet or snowy? What is your routine if you have to pack it away wet? Do you try to open it up and dry it off as soon as possible afterwards? Have you had any issues with mold?
DavoWright it can get wet if you pack it away wet. I’d definitely recommend drying it out after a wet trip if you can, as mold can grow
Hard shell tents are definitely buy once cry once purchases, which is even more of a reason to make sure you see all your options and compare each tents’ strengths and weaknesses 👍
good video. thanks for korean insight. most importantly. congrats on upcoming baby. Good luck. and enjoy man.
Peter Ensrud thank you 🙏
Thank you for the review! Makes me happy that I got one used at half the cost. True about the culture in Korea. I remember when I visited my uncle there and my bed was a blanket on the hard wood floor. It took some getting use to. One question. Does your exped fit in the tent when closed up? or do you pack that up every time?
Dan Champ I packed it away every time . I know some people replace the factory mattress and leave the exped inside deflated
Edward Shin Thank you.
I have been looking at the Alucab also! Guess you are digging yours?
Chad Stellwagen so far we’re able to fit 2 full sized pillows and a down top quilt
Cheers! ✊🏾
How do you feel about the durability of the shell?
76 Power Wagon yeah, we get a lot of questions too when it’s deployed with people around as well 🍻
Have you tested 23 Zero WALKABOUT soft roof tent?
WE ARE HERE for puppy and baby UPDATES !!!!!!!
Charles Show They’re on their way 😉
I love the way they look more than any other, mine works so well that I just can't justify brand hopping lol even though I want to hahaha
They definitely hit it out of the park with the design 👍
What about the ladder being accessible to people on the ground?
hey what bed rack system are you using in your truck bed.
Thank you for a great review!
How well does the dimensions of the Exped match up with the tent? Does it leave gaps on the sides or fit pretty well? Thanks!
It fits pretty well, but leaves a gap on the side where the tent folds open. Some people get two pads as a result. I’d recommend checking t,he iKamper Facebook group, as they have the sizes of the two mattresses recommended (I forgot the exact measurements ]
Great video Edward! Do you keep any of your bedding in the tent when you close it? If so, how do you arrange it before closing the tent?
Ryan Hill the bedding wont fit for us, but we do keep two full sized pillows inside when closing. We would push them to the back and to the corner where there is an upward incline on the tent shell body
Edward Shin You recommended the Exped MegaMat Duo 10 Sleeping Pad to replace/upgrade the original one provided by iKamper. Do the dimensions of this new mattress fill the space perfectly edge to edge? Also, are you completely removing the mattress each time you’re closing the tent?
@@alexcruz6737 I came here to ask the same questions about what can be left inside the tent when you close it up.
@@alexcruz6737 did you figure this out? I'm curious too although ill say ive got a megamat ive used camping for years, it gets pretty flat but not 100%! curious how this worked out for u?
I’m a new subscriber. I love your content and funny enough we are thinking on buying the sky camp 2.0
Thanks
Hello, i am planning on getting skycamp 2.0. Trying to decide between glossy black vs. rocky black. What’s your advice. Thanks.
The Ricky black is great if you anticipate on driving through areas with low hanging branches that may scrape against the tent. What some people have done is get the glossy black and put bed liner on it as well
@@KrokemOutdoors, thank you. How do you put the bed liner? Is it the one you spray on?
Adam Polselli I say the best choice is the one that works for your budget and allows you to enjoy the outdoors 👍🍻
Do these get mouldy when set up in the rain then closed for an amount of time?
Are there replacement canvases available? I just bought one second hand and the canvas has seen better days.
interesting...how was the canvas quality>?
@@jarcidiacono1 fine at some point in time I would assume. This tent is just old and well used.
really good review...but how's the sex in the iKamper..is there enough room? thanks
@d_diver depends on how many people you have in there
I like the iKamper, but feel that for $3900, there should be no issue with the mattress.
I think they chose you because you come off honest, athletic, and a solid overlander/camper/etc person with a wonderful and supportive family that is looking for quality in the products he uses. peace
I definitely agree with you on that. For the price point, the buying demographic should be considered 👍 I appreciate all of the kind words 🙏
Overland OC for me it came with the 2.0, but they do change included accessories once in a while
Edward Shin thanks for the clarification. I am gonna contact iKamper bc I really like that option!
Why do you install it 180 deg from normal position ? it should be opening on passenger side (USA ), right ?
Vadim Zubkov yeah i mounted it the other way since it was mounted low and was not affected by wind resistance
Edward you didn't mention the main reason why I would want to buy one. The hard shell could be positioned towards the wind so as to not hear the soft material flapping in stronger winds.
James HURD that’s a great point as well 👍
I'm thinking about the iKamper mini for the same benefits but a smaller 1-2 person option
Definitely a good option if you don’t need the extra space
I just got the mini. I think it would be tight but possible for two adults at ~50 inch wide.
