Idk why people think defence is boring, accommodating to the taste of the casual viewership is necessary for a business but it’s killing the game, they need to find a middle ground. Even the best defenders nowadays feel underwhelming

Right. Remember during the playoffs you'd see crazy defensive plays right when you'd think a player was about to score a bucket at the rim? It was exciting seeing the ball ricochet all crazy after am insane block. That's what made the NBA, especially during playoff time, so exciting to watch.
Also, remember back then the playoffs is where players actually got better because the intensity was so much higher? Remember the commentators use to stress players with no playoff experience need to experience it so they can improve their game? Now the playoffs look and feel like regular season games. You don't see defensive intensity like that anymore.

I get crazy offense sells to the casual if you’re stat checking on IG and stuff like that, but man, crunch time situations in a close game are so enhanced by good defense, it makes every bucket feel like it was earned in a war
I'd argue It's not even defense. Look at all the uncalled travel, ball carrying, moving pivot foot. In today's NBA you can walk all the way from LA to NYC back & forth w/o being called for travelling once so of course players gets a ton of space for easier offensive stats. Imagine you as a defender guarding opposing wingers, it's hard to time your jump to block his shot. Why? B/c you don't know how many steps he takes after having control of the ball. You think by 3rd step he has to shoot so you jump only find out he moves the pivot to get one more step to dodge your block and refs let him get away with it while you in the mid air look like a fool mistiming his jump. He may add another 2 hop-backs before releasing the ball. It's ridiculous. Today's good offensive stats are all phony.

Bring back traveling and palming the ball. If they are so much more skilled then call the game like it is supposed to be called at any level. No more gather step, super Euro step and carrying the ball and defenses will be better equipped to stay in front of players.

This overload of offense just makes the game boring. Watching someone take an easy trip to the basket isn't as entertaining as people think when it's a regular occurrence. If you strengthen the defense and actually let them play, it makes the offense more interesting because you know when your team scores it's because they're actually good enough earn it. These players today just got no dog in them, and you need it to not only play defense but fight through it when the game going to the wire.
Yeah i rather have some scores here and there instead of every minute. It makes the scoring more valuable.

Normally I'm good with the takes but you missed something Goober. Everyone travels and carries, with some being extremes of it like Morant, Harden or Lebron, but it's mostly a league thing. If they'd call travels players would SEEM less skilled.
Imagine Pistol Pete Maravich getting this leeway to dribble and finish? Hell imagine any offensive player pre this era having that much leeway.
Iverson who was famous for his crossover was called on carrying often and the media, players, coaches, franchises complained they didnt call it ENOUGH. Added like you said the foul calls today. If you pin point the moment when they really started giving leeway it coincides with the extreme boost in pace more than the 3 pointer has which says a lot.
Yes all the reasons you mentioned are all a certain factor, but IMO the foul calls and non calls for travels and carries just makes it impossible for a defender to stop a player.

What so you mean with 90s defence? Illegal defence where you cant play helpside defence if your man is above the free throw line? Thats the reason there were so many post ups/isos. The main reason the score was low in the 90s was because the pace was very low (because Everybody glorified the grit and grind Detroit bad boys style). Meanwhile the first year the Pistons became successfully they were still allowing 104 ppg (late 80s), similar to the best teams right now. Why? Because the pace was higher in the 80s

You make a lot of great points in this video, well done! One thing to highlight is the increase in pace which naturally leads to more scoring. The 7 seconds or less suns would be last in pace in todays NBA but also in the 80s. The denver nuggets averaged over 120 ppg in the 80s with hand checking in place, bad spacing and barely any threes. They just kept running.
Your point on the rules is spot on though. Offensive players get away with travels, carrying the ball and offensive fouls that arent called. Thinking basketball made a great video on how the rules have changed over time to benefit the offensive player.
Nuggets averaged 119 ppg in the 80s. Not 120.

It's not that players got better, it's that they get away with alot. They don't call carrys, walks and they put the 3 seconds rule so centers or players can't be in the paint. Its clearly players not better.
I still think players are somewhat more better. The threes and athleticism are through the roof but they soft asf.
1. Eliminate the carry.
2. Stop calling fouls for breathing.
3. It's a 3 if and only if the player shoots AND lands behind the 3-pt. line.

The NBA has been fast paced and high scoring every decade other than the 90's and 2000's, but people act like every other decade was like those decades. Contrary to popular belief, "hand checking" doesn't stop people from scoring as much as they want to pretend that it does. The current Pacers are playing beautiful basketball, everyone is making good passes to the open guy, and people are knocking down their open looks. No rule can stop that.
It's funny you say that handchecking doesn't stop people from scoring that much when the commissionaire literally explained they got rid of handchecking to open the game for the smaller offensive players more so. Anyone that played ball themselves know it's way harder to go past someone if they can basically break your momentum basically pushing you wherever they want with handchecking. Hell why do you think that players who both played in that era and this all say no handchecking is easier offense?
The very fact that they will call a foul on someone handchecking which is now an 'impeding path' blocking foul or ofc a shooting foul, literally means it's easier for the offense to get by. You know how players put players in the cookie jar like KD's move? Yea that would just be an offensive foul with handchecking instead of free throws. Those stepbacks players make nowadays? Try to pull them off when somebody is allowed to stay in your grill with his hands without it being a call like Harden constantly got.
You can literally read about this and all other rules they implemented to do so like the 3 seconds rule. I could even search the link for you so you can read yourself.

Allow limited hand checking: Let players hand check only beyond the 3 point line. That'll bring some of these 3 point shooters back into the midrange game since they're getting harassed outside the line.
Heavily restrict moving screens: Blow the whistle even if a toe is moved. That'll slow down players using screens to get open looks. It'll reward good coaches for coming up with good schemes and slow down the half court offense a little. You can't just pick and roll your offense all game and defenses won't have to switch as much and give away mismatches.
Start calling travels/carries again: These easy cross and slash to the rim moves are getting cut out.
Those 3 things could take 20 points off the game for both teams and get the scoring back to 108-105.

Adam silvers NBA is unbearable at times. It angers me that all he cares about is money, while he watches the refs take over the game and players scoring 40 points a night off of 20 free throws a game.
They are "more skilled" now because they can travel for hours and its ok.
Just watched Doncic score 73 and defense was like an All Star game…and we all know what a great entertaining product that turned out to be…..I honestly think they’ll have to take away the 3 point line altogether eventually to make the game watchable - there has to be some competitive defense or the value of each individual possession keeps becoming worth less (think about how this contrasts with how each snap in the NFL or each at bat in the MLB keeps the viewer’s attention)
Move the 3 point line back by 3 feet. Guaranteed that will drop league 3 point averages which will force teams to think twice before shooting the 3. That is a step in the right direction to making the game go back more to the mid range game.
Guys can go 0/5 from three today and still get told to shoot it back then you go 0/5 you better get comfortable on the bench

I welcome the evolution of floor spacing offenses in the game, but there should also be new rules and restrictions for offenses to go along with it. Defense isn't impossible to do in the modern NBA, it's just that defense is a lot more scrutinized by officiating than offense because it's a more physical and hectic practice.
I think it's fair now to implement new rules on offense, or at least strictly enforce existing rules, so that offenses can still improve and defenses can still be relevant.

Also Curry gets free throws almost every time he’s touched and throws a tantrum (and his mouthpiece) when he doesn’t get the call

Compare 3-point shooting efficiency today vs. 30 years ago.
90-91 NBA: Only 7 players shot ≥40% from 3. SEVEN. In the entire NBA.
91-92 NBA: 9 players shot ≥40% from 3.
92-93 NBA: 12 players shot ≥40% from 3.
93-94 NBA: 10 players shot ≥40%. Again, in the ENTIRE NBA.
50 players today are shooting 40% or better from 3. Fifty. More players than actual teams.
Let's shorten the 3-point line.
94-95 NBA: 22 players shot ≥40%. Still less than HALF of today's.
95-96 NBA: 28 players shot ≥40%.
96-97 NBA: 17 players shot ≥40%.
Players were so bad at shooting, that shortening the 3pt line actually made them score less while 3pt attempts increased by about 50%. The line was shortened to improve the low scoring, but this made scoring worse, causing the NBA to move the line back to its original spot.
This isn't recency bias. They are objectively shooting the ball better now.
The one thing thats not taken into account is the attempts. In the 90s some teams weren't taking as many as many as some players do today, the emphasis was on the post game and midrange. Since 2002-03 until now the league wide 3pt attempts per season have increased to 50,000 more attempts league wide. So no guys werent shooting as high of a percentage but when you're only shooting 3 a game then each missed 3 is "weighted" more towards your percentage. If they went 1-3 thats 33% where as today guys can go 4-10 and you've got 40%.

I'm sorry but this video is just off the mark. To start off man Steve kerr always has some shit to whine when they lose it's one of my least favorite things in the entire sport. Second of all if we wanna talk about fouls and free throws, attempts per game were actually slightly down in the 2010s and so far in the 2020s than in the 90s when defense was supposedly at its peak and the offense couldn't do whatever they want. Yes there have been rule changes that have made offensive efficiency go up, but to blame the entire spike of offensive efficiency on that is just wrong. When you look at defensive rating by year since 1990 it paints a very specific picture. Defensive ratings haven't spiked until the last few seasons, staying pretty consistently between 104-108 from 1990 all the way to about 2019. The reason for the spike in defense ratings recently isn't free throws or a lack of defence or rule changes, it's just offensive efficiency. Every team takes 3s now, they've eliminated for the most part the most inefficient shots for more efficient ones, and everyone can shoot. I also think it's really funny you brought up a player like Drummond and how it's sad he can't play anymore when he has never made an all defense team, but yet is currently starting for the chicago bulls and having quite a lot of success. I normally like your videos but this one felt like you just went with the mainstream narrative without actually checking to see if the facts backed you up.

BS. The league is shooting threes because it leads to more points (add hand checking and see what happens) and technically are more efficient (but players are now 2 dimensional as a result). But a well rounded team - a hard nose defensive team - will once again dominate the NBA. It’s not because players are so much better, it’s because it’s just not popular to play this way.
Someone could master the sky hook today and completely dominate the NBA. Kobe would tear through today’s weak defense (and Jordan even more). Players aren’t better, they are more one dimensional. Regressions do happen, not just progress.
Jordan was a 4 dimensional player. Could post, could shoot mid range, could play defense and could take you off the dribble. How many players can do all of this today? Who? At an elite level in each category?

Dude, You need some serious update on rules. Trae can't get those fouls anymore because the rules has changed. JJ Redick was spot on when he recently explained that NBA is implementing rules in favor of defense almost every single year lately.
Defense itself is better than ever imo, but offense simply evolves much faster than defense. Teams have found out how to be more efficient than ever.

And as far as new offenses being efficient, we’ve literally had statistical jumps in efficiency for offenses dang near every year, every passing year there’s a new “best offense ever” due to the potency and efficiency of offenses now.

Funny how wrong you are. If today's players are so skilled offensively why have all the rules changed around travelling and carrying to make it easier. If your better it follows that the rules should be made even more strict. Combined with freedom of movement rule changes, defensive 3 seconds and no hand checking it all starts to make your take look inflated. Also players today have much less competitive spirit. The culture of the nba thinks taking games off and playing limited minutes for longevity is cool. Players of the past pushed their physical limits to win games and in general weren't motivated by individual stats. Playing the most minutes and games was a badge of honour as was playing through injury. I don't think you understand how that sort of mindset would look against today's players. Look at how poorly the Olympics team played at the world cup. Based on your point of view those players are far more skilled than previous generations and yet they look so average and resort to iso offenses as soon as the defense starts to look anything close to what it was in the past. The game has become positionless and one dimensional. It's a copycat league so you have nothing to compare it against. If you think kobe wouldn't destroy this weak league you are delusional. Also I would take West over Crawford any day of the week. He was the best defensive player and a far better scorer as well. Also he had one of the most competitive mindsets there have ever been in sports. Crawford wouldn't even want to take on the challenge and would likely chicken out.

If these players today are way more skilled then why the NBA allowed 3 to 5 steps to create a lot of space? Believe me, if they revert back to 2 steps then their numbers will go down drastically. They're not smarter nor more skilled, they're being fed well 🥱
If they went to 2 steps the league average would go down like 3 points, they still make 2 step baskets all the time. Not everyone dribbles like Ja Morant
