  • Let's quickly show you how to stream video from your Synology NAS to your Smart LG TV in this Media Server & Video Station Guide.
    In this video we cover setting up the Synology Media Server and also enabling the service on your Synology NAS Diskstation so your LG TV can detect it.
    You can also access the video by pressing the Home button on your LG TV Remote and then looking for the Photo & Video option to access the video folder.

    Thanks so much for this video. The NAS my late husband set up on our TV was suddenly no longer an option in the media player menu and I have very limited knowledge about NAS servers in general. This video gave me an excellent starting point to locate the problem! Turns out Media Server needed repairing. Had everything fixed in 3 minutes!

    Great video. Most MKV files won't play on the LG smart TV. Don't bother to re-encode your MKVs. Try a simpler method. Just change the suffix from MKV to AVI or MP4 and your smart TV will play them, no problem.

      Not an authority/expert, but MKV is like an envelope for the video to sit in (I think it mainly is for adding subtitles). The "real" issue may be the encoding (how the video was compressed). Uncompressed video is H U G E ! ! ! ! So huge it isn't normally part of a home TV setup. Professional video can be above 150mb per frame. A 10 minute video is 2,764,800,000 ... that's around 2GB ... for 10 minutes. So the compression with help. I think x264 and x265 are the most common ones I've seen. MANY others exist. But that's not the "envelope" (file extension) as such. I think. Hopefully I'm somewhere close on this.

      @@RichardQuadling For sure. Myself I've taken advantage of the free video compressing tool 'HandBrake' with tons of compression and encoding options. With right compressing option I really cannot see much difference on my 55" LG C2 between 87Gb raw 1440p 6hrs recording and a 6gb compressed 1080p or even 720p conversion.
      HandBrake is such a strong tool here for this purpose - especially if you as me for time being has the TV WiFi connected to main router in the other end of your house.
      The raw format videos on my DS418j my LG TV cannot digest, but the Handbrake compressed versions just works out of the box.

    I think you ought to mention that the Synology NAS needs to Index the media that are added to the media server so they don’t wonder why it may not work instantly. Not few people will have quite a lot of data and it will accordingly take considerable time until the files can be accessed from the TV…

    • @user-sx1ym1fi8m

      How long does it take the NAS to finish indexing? I bought it few days ago, but can't set it up so that my TV could see the media content. I have installed Media Server App as well as Advanced Media Extensions App and Video Station App. None to them made the content visible on TV although it can see the DS720plus itself with folders Music/Photo/Video but w/o any files in there although they are there... Why? What dance should I dance to make it work? Does it index automatically and I should just wait or should I install any additional software?

    • @williamhicks2763

      Media Server will tell you when it is indexing in the app or you can check the resource manager to see if indexing is taking place. I’ve seen it take days to reindex.

    I am having same issue with LG TV. None of the videos I've added on my Synology NAS is showing up. In TV menu I found the icons for Video, Photos and Music but nothing there.
    My old WD Book Duo was much better. It simply used to show up under "Input List" and all rest of the folders underneath. That is what I was expecting here or little better.

    Thanks for that. I m thinking about buying an LG tv, Can i ask if DS Video app i assume is not available on the LG TV web os itself? And is the video folder where you copied your samle video made by the media server installation? Can i not point media server to an existing shared folder, as i dont want to move all my videos (hundreds of them already are in a shared folder). Another thing, have you tried kodi or plex meda servers, if they are available on LG tv at all?

    • @williamhicks2763
      @williamhicks2763 Год назад +2

      Yes, you can point Media Server to whatever folders you are already using. You are right about DS video is not available on the LG but you can access it through the TV’s browser but, at least on my 1515+, I usually get a Not Enough Memory message in the browser when trying to play videos, even smaller ones. And of course H265 movies aren’t understood by Video Station, at least on my version. Kodi is not in the LG App Store but Plex is. My experience with Plex has been lacking given my hardware. But that is a possibility I’d like to try on better hardware. Currently, my best way to watch home video is still through DNLA, and for movies I just copy 10 or so at a time to a USB stick and plug them into the TV. I think one day I’ll put a small backup computer with a good enough processor for H265 at my TV and have it sync with the NAS as more of a backup. I actually do better playing movies from my Windows machine over the network than any way I’ve tried with the Synology. Also, there was a video I recently watched comparing 4K of different bit rates on a newer Synology and QNap so you can look for that.

    Is there a way to get the videos looking a little more interesting than just the dumb menu? Maybe along the lines of how the Amazon Prime, Netflix, iPlayer, etc. work? Obviously a LOT of data input needed to add something to each file (where, when, who, why sort of things). Then a search, so find all the videos of the wedding, or a particular person, etc.

    Thank you for your video. I followed it exactly but I already had my photos stored on the NAS in the photos folder but with sub-folders, one for each of the past 15 years labeled by year so 2015, 2016, 2017, etc. each folder containing all the pictures for that year. I copied the photos folder (that contained all the sub-folders, which in turn contained all the photos) I then pasted what I had copied in the "photos" folder in the left column. Sure enough when I went to my LG TV was able to navigate to the three media folders: Music, Photo, and Video. When I opened "Photo" I got all the year folders . But... When I opened the year folders there were no photos instead I got "No photo files or folders exist in storage device," When I went back to the NAS and opened the folders all the pictures were missing. Whet did I do wrong and how may I fix it?

    • @williamhicks2763
      @williamhicks2763 Год назад

      I guess first check our recycle bin. Next step would be to search your entire NAS in case you accidentally dropped them in the wrong folder. Other than that, hopefully you have a backup. For future reference, you can configure media server to monitor whatever folders you want so you really don’t have to move anything. I know you posted a long time ago. Did you find your photos?

      It depends on the NAS but generally they stream good except for 4K h265 videos. You can also stick that USB stick into your LG TV, most likely. That’s what I do for h265 HDR movies because my NAS is 9 years old and just doesn’t have the horsepower to stream those files.

      That NAS is only good for sharing files. You ideally should have about 16 Gigabytes of ram. Also the cpu is too weak to transcode on the fly for media formats the tv won't play on its own.
