A Sgt Major whispered into my ear once on a monday morning parade "play the game Rob, its just a game". He was a lovely bloke and he wasn't playing down the job at all. I took it as he meant it. Just crack on, never be jack, have a laugh doing so and do your best.

Also my section commander found Harribos in his boots after tac ex 3 on a locker inspection. Don’t be that guy.

When I joined the Scots guards in the 80,s I didn't have time to prepare, I did the army selection at Sutton Coldfield one week got attested and sworn in on the Saturday then early train down Monday morning to Pirbright guards depot. I was 23 so older than most and a bit more streetwise however it was a massive shock to the system. I had the mindset that I was in prison for something I didn't do so whatever happened I couldn't get out. Basic was really hard in those days because your feet didn't touch the ground, kit and room inspections, fitness trading and drill nonstop. I was quite fit been working on building sites but didn't do any running but you don't have to be fit the pti, s will get you fit. My best advice to anyone joining is listen to your instructors, don't try to be clever even if you know a bit about the equipment (the instructors don't like know it all recruits trying to undermine them) apply yourself 100% to everything and don't be jack. You will get all kinds of people joining up from different backgrounds so try and integrate, it's a lonely place if you don't, you're all in the same boat so pull together. When I was in the drop out rate was about 75% but I don't think it's as harsh now. Try and be the grey man and don't bring attention to yourself for the wrong reasons and remember not everyone is cut out to be a soldier so if it isn't for you at least you give it a go. I've never heard anyone say they couldn't hack the training but in reality a lot of them couldn't. It's tough for a reason and that is to sort the wheat from the chaff because it's a tough life being a soldier and the job demands a lot of you.

I joined 10 Para, a TA unit in 1960s. My occupation was a telecoms engineer. We had 24 weekends training (plus drill nights). Complete 'P' company in a weekend (no sissy helmets for the Milling) and just two weeks to do the Para course irrespective of wind speed. In that time the 'instructors', in my case a couple of thugs in uniform, have to knock the civilian values out of you!
    MY TIPS:
    *Keep your mouth shut.
*Do not claim knowledge of anything - knowing it all - big trouble!
    *Never be the 'last one'.
*Blend in. Be the grey man.
*Do not get 'noticed'. If the order is "You, you, & you" ok. Once they know your name you become the first man
they call for some irksome duty.
    * Always fall in at the front of the squad when going for a run. The ranks behind you have to run faster
to keep up, fall to the back and you have had it.
*Try not to get lumbered running with a GPMG (Jim-Pea) on a battle March.
*When doing a Log race don't get on either end, the guys in the middle relax and you end up carrying all the
    weight.
*Maintain a sense of Humour - try and cheer people up when the shit comes down. "See you all at the bottom"
*as you are first to jump from the Balloon.
    Good luck.

Try to get about 50 push-ups in 2 mins. 13 on the bleep test is more than enough for the new fitness assessment. It’s not really a test any more, it’s more of an assessment to figure out what you might struggle with and tailor a plan for you from that. Unless you are really really bad you can’t fail it

Here's a comment from an ex squad die, who was in the TA and failed basic training due to ankle injury and never returned to the Army 21 years ago.
    My advice
1/ train with an ex royal marine doing military fitness if you can find an ex PTI.
    2/ be prepared more mentally.
Do your own room inspection in your bedroom then trash and destroy it.
Then redo it again. As NCOS will do that to you during training to break you.
3/ watch RUclips videos on drill.
4/ learn about British Army kit and what they use.
5/ learn navigation compass map reading and orienteering etc.
6/ the stuff you can learn in theory SA80 rifle drill from soldiers pocket book. But not for real until you get to training.
7/ NBC drill have to do that for real.
Can learn about GSR mask etc and NBC kit.
    This is my advice. 👍🏻 🇬🇧 💂‍♀️
Be mentally more tough than physically tough as you can work on your physical exercise. It's the mental side that was more challenging for me. Basically Fucking you about.
The equipment has changed, the people have changed come and gone, but the traditions, training hasn't much, timeless really. Society changes faster.
