A Sgt Major whispered into my ear once on a monday morning parade "play the game Rob, its just a game". He was a lovely bloke and he wasn't playing down the job at all. I took it as he meant it. Just crack on, never be jack, have a laugh doing so and do your best.
Head down best foot forward listen to what's being said realise your going to be pushed to your limit you have realise the training staff dnt want you to fail but it's their job to turn out the best soldiers they can your the ones that this country relies on if the shit hits the fan from an ex rgj respect to all who are in training and the best of luck in your careers
Try to get a pair of issue boots and break them in by walking and then running in them so when you join up, you don’t have to worry about blisters, shin splints etc.
There was a lad called Martel in my phase 1 and he was jack af, he never did block jobs or take the bins out and every time before an inspection he would take a shit right before the toilets were inspected. Also my section commander found Harribos in his boots after tac ex 3 on a locker inspection. Don’t be that guy.
Yep. We had one the calld him Kwig. God know why he got back squaded so meny times. But ended in our platoon and the last exercise in phase one as we were changin over to take wach. He let a full clip go. Then u. All know were he ended up
When I joined the Scots guards in the 80,s I didn't have time to prepare, I did the army selection at Sutton Coldfield one week got attested and sworn in on the Saturday then early train down Monday morning to Pirbright guards depot. I was 23 so older than most and a bit more streetwise however it was a massive shock to the system. I had the mindset that I was in prison for something I didn't do so whatever happened I couldn't get out. Basic was really hard in those days because your feet didn't touch the ground, kit and room inspections, fitness trading and drill nonstop. I was quite fit been working on building sites but didn't do any running but you don't have to be fit the pti, s will get you fit. My best advice to anyone joining is listen to your instructors, don't try to be clever even if you know a bit about the equipment (the instructors don't like know it all recruits trying to undermine them) apply yourself 100% to everything and don't be jack. You will get all kinds of people joining up from different backgrounds so try and integrate, it's a lonely place if you don't, you're all in the same boat so pull together. When I was in the drop out rate was about 75% but I don't think it's as harsh now. Try and be the grey man and don't bring attention to yourself for the wrong reasons and remember not everyone is cut out to be a soldier so if it isn't for you at least you give it a go. I've never heard anyone say they couldn't hack the training but in reality a lot of them couldn't. It's tough for a reason and that is to sort the wheat from the chaff because it's a tough life being a soldier and the job demands a lot of you.
If you're in the UK do they let you put in extra hours for things like gun aim training etc. Because i want to put in so many hours into practising weapons

Get yourself a personal trainer if you can afford it or there some good vids on you tube about army fitness look I'm going to be straight with you a year is plenty of time bit the onus is on you it depends on how much you want to join reward only comes with hard work both mentally and physically good luck with your training
I did 50 sit ups. Felt like the ends of my 2 thigh bones, were grinding. Afterwards, walking felt a bit different. Im afraid if i carry on doing sit ups, my thigh bones, ends, will break. What do you think?
Your bones won’t break from doing sit ups, even if you did 10,000. However, your muscles on the other hand will get sore or even tear if you do too many of the same exercise
Hey man your content has been amazing I have a question. How and what is training like to get into the infantry as an officer/what is officer training like in general I'm defo applying after Uni and some guidance would be amazing.
Get in touch with your local UOTC - every Uni has one! (if you're at uni) There are some fantastic videos about Sandhurst on RUclips, one is a 3 parter I think that covers basically everything.
"dont be jack" *jack sweats nervously* is there a specific amount of pushups i need or cardio? atm im on 13 in bleep test but im worried its not enough
Try to get about 50 push-ups in 2 mins. 13 on the bleep test is more than enough for the new fitness assessment. It’s not really a test any more, it’s more of an assessment to figure out what you might struggle with and tailor a plan for you from that. Unless you are really really bad you can’t fail it
This is not part of the entry test anymore. But I strongly recommend that you still do them. The old test used to be: 44 Press Ups in 2 mins 55 Sit Ups in 2 mins A relatively good benchmark. I'd say just do max reps in 2 mins and see where you're at
Yes mate, all training is going ahead. Obviously there are covid precautions in place, so some elements are slightly different. But it’s still full-steam ahead. Good luck!
Passed out of Pirbright a few weeks ago. Some small essentials which are very useful to take. Make sure you have a watch, will help you with lesson timings throughout the day. Stationary stuff like Pens are a must buy a big pack to last you. Baby wipes are extremely useful especially on exercise wiping cam cream off your face and cleaning mud off stuff. Last thing i massively reccommend is a shoe polishing kit. On/off brush, few cloths and some Kiwi Dark Tan polish as thats what everyone uses on their boots.
@@danielstephens1395 No worries. Just remember the first few weeks at Basic are quite shit and a bit boring. You're settling in, everything is new, you might feel home sick as many people do and you're likely to get beasted but just stick it out. It gets so much better as time goes on. Just keep your head down, do everything you're asked and you cant go wrong. It's all a game and you just gotta play the game. Good luck
Good evening. I am really determined to join the army however I am currently taking antidepressants. The condition is stable and well managed. Is this likely to be a disqualifying issue.

Here's a comment from an ex squad die, who was in the TA and failed basic training due to ankle injury and never returned to the Army 21 years ago. My advice 1/ train with an ex royal marine doing military fitness if you can find an ex PTI. 2/ be prepared more mentally. Do your own room inspection in your bedroom then trash and destroy it. Then redo it again. As NCOS will do that to you during training to break you. 3/ watch RUclips videos on drill. 4/ learn about British Army kit and what they use. 5/ learn navigation compass map reading and orienteering etc. 6/ the stuff you can learn in theory SA80 rifle drill from soldiers pocket book. But not for real until you get to training. 7/ NBC drill have to do that for real. Can learn about GSR mask etc and NBC kit. This is my advice. 👍🏻 🇬🇧 💂♀️ Be mentally more tough than physically tough as you can work on your physical exercise. It's the mental side that was more challenging for me. Basically Fucking you about. The equipment has changed, the people have changed come and gone, but the traditions, training hasn't much, timeless really. Society changes faster.
I asked this in the comments on another video, but I am interested in joining the army (i am thinking royal military police or infantry). I want to get a degree, my parents want me to go to university, but I am not certain that uni life is for me, but I want to get a degree at some point, am I able to get a degree whilst serving in the army? (That is, if I pass the application process and basic training).
Yes, I left school with 4 GCSE’s, joined the army, and after my minimum service (4 years) the army education wing paid for me to do a part time degree in astrophysics and planetary science. So yes, you can gain a degree whilst serving.
Hi I am joining Catterick infantry training on the 7th of March looking to join the rifles and i was wondering during phase one or two do you do a driving test for ALL licenses to drive all classes or is that after training ?.
Hi bud I'm ex rgj you wont learn to drive whilst training but when you pass and join your battalion you will find plenty of opportunities to learn whilst I was in there I put my name forward for every course that came up even if they were irrelevant I went into anti tank then recce where I learnt to drive before those in rifle companies but it may be different now best of luck in your career bud cet et audaux
@@nickrussell9292 that's no problem bud maybe you should look at joining one of the mechanised battalions they may have more opportunities for driving than a rifle battalion you will have to look into it
My one tip for Catterick is get decent tent pegs, all the lads using the cheap shit from the naafi won't be laughing when their basha collapses on them when some mong steps on it at night
You won't be out of place at that age. The jobs for officers and soldiers differ greatly, particularly depending on your chosen cap badge. Feel free to message me.
@@sausag3onthefloor cheers matt. Yeah I understand they are really different. I find myself leaning towards the soldier route as the corps I would be most interested in joining would be the Int Corps. I would love to engage in the analysis itself, perhaps even taking up the close operational support role. I'm still in uni studying a phd in biochemistry. I am torn though because, although is a bit shallow, the prestige and better external perception of the officer role as well as the privilege of leading some proper clever and switched on people would be amazing. Then there's the salary and lifestyle perks. Tough decisions
I would assume that if you apply with a phd, the recruitment team will probably push you towards the Officer route. Saying that, it is still completely your choice
@@djrxp Cheers; yes I feel like they would too; but despite the undoubted attraction of being able to lead soldiers, I would quite like to do some 'green' roles. I would really love to join the Int Corps, however such roles in this corps are limited to the LCpl with Int Officers being stationed in HQ. Still a fascinating job. Finally, How much harder is RMAS compared to Pirbright/Winchester/Catterick?
I wish you hadn't said don't be jack, my nephew is joining the army and he's called jack but I didn't hear that until I'd sent this to him 😔 I realise it's just a saying but I wish I hadn't sent it to him now.
Afternoon Sir, I'd like to see you do a snap inspection on your recruits and record it I think it would make a good video and give a good insight for future recruits as to what Army Admin life is like and what to expect in an inspection during basic training.
Is it true that there is a swimming test at basic training? Army website is very wishy washy with a lot of details, makes it very confusing on knowing what to train for.
Only a basic one and they'll help you if you're a weak swimmer. It's like..2 mins treading water and then 4 lengths of the pool without touching the sides
I shit you not it’s like the arctic in the pool for the swim test, unless it was just mine but I failed on the fact that my body couldn’t handle the shock I was going through so they made me get out even though I’m normally a strong swimmer
You don't apply to be a sniper as such you would have to joing as a general duties marines and hope that you are an exceptional shot and if you are good enough they will ask if you would like to try out and do the snipers course
Do yourselves a favour, don't join the Infantry. If you must join the Army, make sure you get a trade, even driving HGVs will give you something when you leave. Infantry gives you nothing. I thought I knew better when I joined up, big mistake. Better still forget the military and get into Wind Farm work.

I’m trying to prepare myself to join but I want to go into the grenadier guards, how do I go about that? Quality vid mate keep it up👍🏻
You’ll be able to select your desired regiment during interview at a recruitment centre (I think atleast, not too sure. best to research)
Awesome video 👏🏻 🔥, thank you for the tips !
No problem!!
Is a year enough time to go from unfit to soldier fit?
Depends how hard you train!
@@djrxp oh😂, say I do like 2k 5 times a week for a year is that enough? (With some other exercises too)
Get yourself a personal trainer if you can afford it or there some good vids on you tube about army fitness look I'm going to be straight with you a year is plenty of time bit the onus is on you it depends on how much you want to join reward only comes with hard work both mentally and physically good luck with your training
@@swifty8538 thanks for your help I’ll definitely see what I can do, means a lot
A year is loads of time.i did it in 2 months. Didnt have any problems with fitness in basic

Cheers!
Is this applicable for Initial Officer Training?
Turn up.
What webbing do you use please and can you please do a video on what you pack in it

Any tips for Sandhurst in terms of the academic side? Is it hard? Thanks
29 of may for me
I did 50 sit ups.
Another banger!!
Hey man your content has been amazing I have a question. How and what is training like to get into the infantry as an officer/what is officer training like in general I'm defo applying after Uni and some guidance would be amazing.
Get in touch with your local UOTC - every Uni has one! (if you're at uni)
There are some fantastic videos about Sandhurst on RUclips, one is a 3 parter I think that covers basically everything.
do u have k9 department in the army
Another class video
Thanks!
Great video 👏
"dont be jack"
*jack sweats nervously*
is there a specific amount of pushups i need or cardio?
atm im on 13 in bleep test but im worried its not enough
Try to get about 50 push-ups in 2 mins. 13 on the bleep test is more than enough for the new fitness assessment. It’s not really a test any more, it’s more of an assessment to figure out what you might struggle with and tailor a plan for you from that. Unless you are really really bad you can’t fail it
what's your experience with recruits from Australia/NZ? How uncommon are they?
how many sit ups and press ups are you excepted to do and do you have to do it in a time frame?
This is not part of the entry test anymore. But I strongly recommend that you still do them. The old test used to be:
44 Press Ups in 2 mins
55 Sit Ups in 2 mins
A relatively good benchmark. I'd say just do max reps in 2 mins and see where you're at
@@djrxp thank you so much.
@@lukenayasi9765 No worries mate
Can you make a video how to make sure we pass the medical test please thanks
Are they still doing there training during covid? as I’ve applied online and not sure if they are still doing it?
Yes mate, all training is going ahead. Obviously there are covid precautions in place, so some elements are slightly different. But it’s still full-steam ahead. Good luck!
@@0smuzz0 awesome mate cheers!
My phase 1 starts in 27days at ATC Pirbright any last minute bits i should buy ?
Passed out of Pirbright a few weeks ago. Some small essentials which are very useful to take. Make sure you have a watch, will help you with lesson timings throughout the day. Stationary stuff like Pens are a must buy a big pack to last you. Baby wipes are extremely useful especially on exercise wiping cam cream off your face and cleaning mud off stuff. Last thing i massively reccommend is a shoe polishing kit. On/off brush, few cloths and some Kiwi Dark Tan polish as thats what everyone uses on their boots.
@@instak9011 cheers mate really appreciate it 👊🏼 I have most of that apart from the wipes I’ll go buy some I appreciate the help tho !!
Good luck
@@instak9011 100% mate thanks for the pointers I’ve been waiting for this for years now and still can wait jsut hope it all I hoped it would be 👊🏼👊🏼
Banging advice from Instak90 right there! 💪🏼👍🏻👌🏻
Good evening. I am really determined to join the army however I am currently taking antidepressants. The condition is stable and well managed. Is this likely to be a disqualifying issue.
That’s a list of factors that may defer or disqualify you but it’s vague so you’re probably best speaking to a recruiter, good luck
@@desirefusion532 cheers yeah it is very vague; hopefully with a letter from my GP they should deem this satisfactory.
@@oatypeddler264 not sure you’d get cleared if you’re still on anti-depressants, you may need to be off them for a certain amount of years but I’d speak to a recruiter and just tell them your situation, all the best
@@desirefusion532 I have been stable for several years and have come off them a few weeks ago. It was a repeat prescription and I just never actively requested discharge.
@@oatypeddler264 I’d just speak to a recruiter they’ll tell you more than I can
Probably wouldn't pass me even tho I want to go in I probably won't be able to cos I'll just give up like always
Is height is necessary for join the British army? I am a commonwealth women and height around 4.9 ft. Am I eligible for soilder ??
I really really wanted to join in and I preparing for so long to join in the British army. But in the British army website haven't mentioned any information about the height criteria so that's why I really need to know.
Please please reply sir🙏 🙏
Doesn’t matter cheers
I need tips on how to pass the medical 😂
I’m in Harrogate in March and a veteran I know said don’t drink or in any way consume sugar products because it will give you an irregular heartbeat and they will think u have a heart mermer rand you’ll have to start your process all over again

I wouldn’t consume any protein before you do it as loads of lads at my AC got held up for hours until it was out their system
@@callum2042 oh wow. Thanks lad
@@kaiwalker8340 do NOT tell the doctor you have any ancestral blood outside of the UK they will medically differ you until your blood is tested for sickle cell
Here's a comment from an ex squad die, who was in the TA and failed basic training due to ankle injury and never returned to the Army 21 years ago.
My advice
1/ train with an ex royal marine doing military fitness if you can find an ex PTI.
Be mentally more tough than physically tough as you can work on your physical exercise. It's the mental side that was more challenging for me. Basically Fucking you about.
The equipment has changed, the people have changed come and gone, but the traditions, training hasn't much, timeless really. Society changes faster.
I want to join as common wealth
I asked this in the comments on another video, but I am interested in joining the army (i am thinking royal military police or infantry). I want to get a degree, my parents want me to go to university, but I am not certain that uni life is for me, but I want to get a degree at some point, am I able to get a degree whilst serving in the army? (That is, if I pass the application process and basic training).
Yes, I left school with 4 GCSE’s, joined the army, and after my minimum service (4 years) the army education wing paid for me to do a part time degree in astrophysics and planetary science. So yes, you can gain a degree whilst serving.
@@JStreat1390 thanks!
@@swifty8538 thank you :)
@@nickrussell9292 that's no problem bud maybe you should look at joining one of the mechanised battalions they may have more opportunities for driving than a rifle battalion you will have to look into it
@@swifty8538 thanks ill keep that in mind.
My one tip for Catterick is get decent tent pegs, all the lads using the cheap shit from the naafi won't be laughing when their basha collapses on them when some mong steps on it at night
Hi mate, great video. I'm really torn between going in as an officer or soldier. I'm 27, would I be out of place at basic training?
I wish you hadn't said don't be jack, my nephew is joining the army and he's called jack but I didn't hear that until I'd sent this to him 😔
I realise it's just a saying but I wish I hadn't sent it to him now.
It's basic training the same if you don't want to be an infantry soldier

Don’t be a jack, do the block jobs lol

I want to be a sniper in the royal marines, how good do I have to be to be accepted for this?
if ur asking these questions ur in the wrong mindset already look online and you’ll find ur answer bud, best of luck!
You don't apply to be a sniper as such you would have to joing as a general duties marines and hope that you are an exceptional shot and if you are good enough they will ask if you would like to try out and do the snipers course
Better than you are now.
You need a KD on Call of Duty of at least 5.0... 🤦♂️
Do yourselves a favour, don't join the Infantry. If you must join the Army, make sure you get a trade, even driving HGVs will give you something when you leave. Infantry gives you nothing. I thought I knew better when I joined up, big mistake. Better still forget the military and get into Wind Farm work.
What did u train to get into infantry cause I’m weak and i wanna join
I thought this was US Army 🤦
