I think you guys fail to forget that these influencers are humans too... There's always someone "better" than you, even if you're a rich influencer. The same guys are probably looking at other even richer and even more "alpha" men than themselves and getting the negative effects. Nobody wins in social media. Everyone just loses and feels jealous of one another.

Why should you even care that much about your testosterone? I really don't understand. If it is too low, go to the doctor, if it is too high, go to the doctor. But if you care about your masculinity that much then maybe you should go to the doctor too, just not your usual one.
Having too low of testosterone makes a person physically weak, muscles shrink. In addition they jump to emotional stress quicker without any reason. Having high testosterone is a birthright for every male on Earth.

Back in the day a man had to work hard to even see a naked woman (talking to a woman, taking her out on dates, proving yourself to be a man, showing the many products of your success, etc) where as these days men get it for free at the click of their fingers. @Dan M I think it's a Buddhist concept indeed. This is exactly what those Buddhist meditations have taught me: happiness coming from the inside out, and not the other way around. Hierarchy and status are just concepts anyway, and both come with their own dependencies. Dependency is what creates sorrow and Buddhists know this.

I think it all goes down to how we let external things like social media affect our lives. As Marcus Aurelius said in Meditations: "You have power over your mind - not outside events. Realize this, and you will find strength."

"You're the only one who can provide this money to her, you're her provider and dominator and she needs this from you, not you from her!" boom - brain bypassed - as long as you can actually convince yourself of things and cast the doubt outside of your mind instead of trying to shrink it and hide it at the back of your mind where you don't look, can cause the big spike. I have a theory that 'confidence' is really just the casting away of doubt, so whenever an opportunity to confront doubt arises and you win and then feel that confidence boost that's actually your testosterone spiking.
A lot of my low testosterone and anxiety comes from my middle school days where I was like the last person to hit puberty, automatically putting me at the bottom of the social hierarchy for years, at the time I just accepted I was a little kid and all the girls though I was “cute” and that has affected me ever since.
I was bullied because my eye sockets are slightly asymmetric, which makes it look as if my eyes were cross-eyed at times, despite it being tested not to be the case. Now whenever I get complimented, I can never take it seriously, in fact, I always feel like I'm being made fun of. Additionally, I'm a very anxious person, social interaction is hard and I can only interact with women from a professional or friendly POV, which deepens my feelings of inadequacy and subordination. That said, I'm physically fit, I'm considered smart by everyone around me and I guess that by most's standards, I'm successful. Going to try to be more dominant from today onwards. Gotta fake it till you make it, some would say.

i am so so happy, that i accidentely found this video because it just sums up and puts into words my thoughts for the last year! 2020 wasn´t easy and maybe or pretty sure social media was just another negative source to our mental health. we probably spend way much time than usual scrolling through instagram over and over due to beeing stuck at home.

Something I feel is important to add to the discussion is that acute changes in testosterone are normal, and micromanaging these is not only unlikely to lead to positive outcomes, but also complicate life needlessly. Heavy squatting and other compound lifts, for example, has been shown to produce a great spike in testosterone. This has led to a lot of ineffective advice being given; always include heavy compounds to produce a test spike and maximize anabolism. There is no evidence that this actually works, and you wouldn't expect it to if you understand that what matters for anabolism is the area under the curve over time.
You kind of contradict yourself. You first say heavy squatting and compound lifts have been shown to spike testosterone levels. And then say this is inaffective advice??
A thought i had while watching this was that we need to stop demonizing masculine traits (Especially in our youth). Sure Testosterone can make men territorial, aggressive, or violent but it also brings out leadership, drive, and charisma.
my testosteron is very high yet I have quite severe social anxiety so this link does not apply to me. Then again I am on the autism spectrum so for me social anxiety is more the result of "being afraid to overstimulate" than feeling "less dominant". Interesting topic!
I am a woman and have higher testosterone than even some men haha. Lower voice, smaller chest, love to win and compete, and stronger faster muscles. This makes so much sense now. That's why I attract men who are more on the feminine side, or have lower testosterone.

That’s not it at all. You have less testosterone because you’ve settled down and can enjoy meaningful relationships you’ve tried so hard to acquire (because of the testosterone). Take a look at the hormones that increase after getting married and having a baby.
Testosterone also falls with age (peak for man is around 18-26 years old, then it slowly falls). I think it is most possibly a correlation not causation that married man with children would have lower testosterone.
Testosterone makes you seek a mate. When you find one, it drops to a level where the seeking behavior is more in the background and other hormones like vasopressin rise to ensure that you keep bonding with that mate to keep raising high-quality offspring, plus those hormones raise your life expectancy. Some of those hormones actually make you more dominant, but in a much more considerate and family-oriented way than the ego-dominance of testosterone. An unhappy or incompatible bond can reduce those hormones, causing depression and health problems due to the low level of all hormones. That is for the majority of people, but not for some. For some their testosterone level never drops and they usually don't produce offspring in the modern world due to making many shallow bonds due to the seeking behavior not weakening or produce low quality offspring (single mothers/serial cheating problems leading to parental fighting and secrecy leading to disconnection between family members) but probably higher quantity of offspring. Those are also the people the majority of non-bonded (and unhappily bonded) people compare themselves to because they seem to have a much better chance at finding more high-quality mates. Basically, your body already has a reproductive strategy, be it quality or whatever.
It IS more complicated. The research suggests that men with lower T are more likely to be and stay married to begin with. This is all about investment tradeoffs and life history theory. Basically you either invest in reproduction or longevity. You either have a fast life strategy: having lots of sex, spreading your seed, earlier death, displays of aggression, competing for dominance and status, and high T. OR you have a slow life strategy: low T, less dominance, longer lifespan, more monogamous and a focus on investing resources into one relationship. This is why the act of committing in a relationship lowers T, because high T is conducive to fast life strategies and polygamous reproduction. Men who ARE married and have higher T don't stay monogamously married for long..

I found glaring problems with this one... It is a correlation, not a causation for the higher status males to have higher testosterone levels. I see no evidence presented here to PROVE anything was directly causing anything else. And the argument could easily be made that BECAUSE they had higher levels of test, is why they achieved the higher status, and not the other way around. Get it ~ It surprised me that this wasn't even mentioned. Additionally, using the same logic, it's perhaps the men with low testosterone are the ones that prefer to use Instagram, instead of the argument made here that it actually causes it. The fact is, we don't yet know either way.
You make an excellent point, except we do have evidence that it is causation. Take a look at the body of literature on "winner-loser effects". In animal models we can manipulate the outcomes of winning/losing fights by rigging the outcome of fights. For example we can pair a randomly selected male with a really crappy male that we know will likely lose in order to experimentally generate winners. With these methods, we still see winners experience a "winner effect" that translates into boosts in testosterone, increase in social status, higher odds of winning another fight, and higher success in obtaining mates.

There are plenty of examples of people with hypogonadism or clinically low test levels that came up in bloodworks that got TRT and the boost in testosterone directly translated to more confidence and success in general. CEOs of companies who are woman also have higher than average testosterone levels, there's plenty to look at that shows this effect to be real, even through observations and testing of animals in the wild and seeing testosterone levels before and after fights etc. When he have a debate/confrontation with someone even just an ideological fight of wits if you feel you came out on top you will get a testosterone spike.
I remember hearing about a study which completely contradicts what your saying: Reachers would get football supporters to spit in a tube and they noted which team they were on. After the match they did the same. They both had increased testosterone, but the loosing team had much higher testosterone. Its speculated that this is because when a team wins they are more protective of their status, when your body thinks your status is threatened it increases testosterone.

For example, aromatase inhibitors, as well as SERMs and SARMs significantly raise testosterone, but not a single positive health outcome has been proven in men in terms of mental health and muscle mass. It would also help to include all citations in the video description.

Really interesting, this has really applied to me as I went through a similar cycle. I was socially embarrassed and I felt very anxious and depressed for about six months I would avoid people/situations I used to be comfortable in. I also put 1.5 stone of fat on even though before I was very lean. However recently I have began: dieting, exercising as well as being more sociable this has greatly improved my confidence; I am definitely going to keep this in mind in the future.

Nothing special in the comments but something told me to keep waching. Turns out the video is a lot more than the title and really valuable! Respect to the creators. Dunbars number really isn’t a reliable metric for people we assert as our dominance hierarchy. Firstly it was achieved with frankly dishonest logarithmic scales mapping the number of identifications apes have in their brain and adjusting for human brain size(which we have yet to assert is logically consistent). Bees, birds and many other animals travel in far larger groups with far smaller brains. Secondly, as you outlined, the mean groupings were 150, meaning a considerable amount of people don’t fall anywhere close to this metric. Weddings are attended only by people you like, so they’re not even a similar to a dominance hierarchy of people as people you don’t like aren’t included. Lastly, it’s easy to take a number like 150 and retroactively assert a bunch of arbitrary statistics that retroactively support this view, but consider the clear counter example the fact most people follow far more than 200 people on Instagram. Simply read Dunbar’s papers. His statistics are based on weak assumptions about the brain. His correlations are contrived. Neurology is new field. Many findings are headline grabbing yes, but they are not being replicated as easily.

I always find this sort of knowledge fairly depressing. My libido is absolutely broken from post finasteride syndrome, has been for over 6 years, so talking to women is always littered with doubt because I fear I could be a massive dissapointment to her. But sometimes i notice myself getting all depressed over just one or two photos of acquaintances doing crazy things in amazing places- well known feeling, especially in these latest two generations, but I’m glad to hear some affirmation that I’m right to avoid it and to not care about famous people

I have a theory that 'confidence' is really just the casting away of doubt, so whenever an opportunity to confront doubt arises and you win and then feel that confidence boost that's actually your testosterone spiking.
A lot of my low testosterone and anxiety comes from my middle school days where I was like the last person to hit puberty, automatically putting me at the bottom of the social hierarchy for years, at the time I just accepted I was a little kid and all the girls though I was “cute” and that has affected me ever since.

I was bullied because my eye sockets are slightly asymmetric, which makes it look as if my eyes were cross-eyed at times, despite it being tested not to be the case.
Now whenever I get complimented, I can never take it seriously, in fact, I always feel like I'm being made fun of. Additionally, I'm a very anxious person, social interaction is hard and I can only interact with women from a professional or friendly POV, which deepens my feelings of inadequacy and subordination. That said, I'm physically fit, I'm considered smart by everyone around me and I guess that by most's standards, I'm successful.

Something I feel is important to add to the discussion is that acute changes in testosterone are normal, and micromanaging these is not only unlikely to lead to positive outcomes, but also complicate life needlessly.
Heavy squatting and other compound lifts, for example, has been shown to produce a great spike in testosterone. This has led to a lot of ineffective advice being given; always include heavy compounds to produce a test spike and maximize anabolism. There is no evidence that this actually works, and you wouldn't expect it to if you understand that what matters for anabolism is the area under the curve over time.
You kind of contradict yourself. You first say heavy squatting and compound lifts have been shown to spike testosterone levels. And then say this is inaffective advice??

If testosterone is so directly linked to social dominance, why does it reduce due to marriage and fatherhood? Does having a family make you instantly less dominant? The relation between testosterone and dominance should be more complicated to account for this.
That’s not it at all. You have less testosterone because you’ve settled down and can enjoy meaningful relationships you’ve tried so hard to acquire (because of the testosterone). Take a look at the hormones that increase after getting married and having a baby.
The significance of testosterone in your life changes as you grow older. A 40 year old man isn't seeking to be a great body builder or athlete.
Testosterone also falls with age (peak for man is around 18-26 years old, then it slowly falls). I think it is most possibly a correlation not causation that married man with children would have lower testosterone.
Testosterone makes you seek a mate. When you find one, it drops to a level where the seeking behavior is more in the background and other hormones like vasopressin rise to ensure that you keep bonding with that mate to keep raising high-quality offspring, plus those hormones raise your life expectancy. Some of those hormones actually make you more dominant, but in a much more considerate and family-oriented way than the ego-dominance of testosterone. An unhappy or incompatible bond can reduce those hormones, causing depression and health problems due to the low level of all hormones.
That is for the majority of people, but not for some. For some their testosterone level never drops and they usually don't produce offspring in the modern world due to making many shallow bonds due to the seeking behavior not weakening or produce low quality offspring (single mothers/serial cheating problems leading to parental fighting and secrecy leading to disconnection between family members) but probably higher quantity of offspring. Those are also the people the majority of non-bonded (and unhappily bonded) people compare themselves to because they seem to have a much better chance at finding more high-quality mates.
Basically, your body already has a reproductive strategy, be it quality or whatever.
It IS more complicated. The research suggests that men with lower T are more likely to be and stay married to begin with. This is all about investment tradeoffs and life history theory. Basically you either invest in reproduction or longevity. You either have a fast life strategy: having lots of sex, spreading your seed, earlier death, displays of aggression, competing for dominance and status, and high T. OR you have a slow life strategy: low T, less dominance, longer lifespan, more monogamous and a focus on investing resources into one relationship. This is why the act of committing in a relationship lowers T, because high T is conducive to fast life strategies and polygamous reproduction. Men who ARE married and have higher T don't stay monogamously married for long..

I found glaring problems with this one... It is a correlation, not a causation for the higher status males to have higher testosterone levels. I see no evidence presented here to PROVE anything was directly causing anything else. And the argument could easily be made that BECAUSE they had higher levels of test, is why they achieved the higher status, and not the other way around. Get it

You make an excellent point, except we do have evidence that it is causation. Take a look at the body of literature on "winner-loser effects". In animal models we can manipulate the outcomes of winning/losing fights by rigging the outcome of fights. For example we can pair a randomly selected male with a really crappy male that we know will likely lose in order to experimentally generate winners. With these methods, we still see winners experience a "winner effect" that translates into boosts in testosterone, increase in social status, higher odds of winning another fight, and higher success in obtaining mates.

There are plenty of examples of people with hypogonadism or clinically low test levels that came up in bloodworks that got TRT and the boost in testosterone directly translated to more confidence and success in general. CEOs of companies who are woman also have higher than average testosterone levels, there's plenty to look at that shows this effect to be real, even through observations and testing of animals in the wild and seeing testosterone levels before and after fights etc. When he have a debate/confrontation with someone even just an ideological fight of wits if you feel you came out on top you will get a testosterone spike.

I remember hearing about a study which completely contradicts what your saying: Reachers would get football supporters to spit in a tube and they noted which team they were on. After the match they did the same. They both had increased testosterone, but the loosing team had much higher testosterone. Its speculated that this is because when a team wins they are more protective of their status, when your body thinks your status is threatened it increases testosterone.

Dude honestly, I love this video because it's like you get far enough into it and it's just like what the heck is this about, and then it all ends up actually still being related to the video topic.
Really interesting, this has really applied to me as I went through a similar cycle. I was socially embarrassed and I felt very anxious and depressed for about six months I would avoid people/situations I used to be comfortable in. I also put 1.5 stone of fat on even though before I was very lean. However recently I have began: dieting, exercising as well as being more sociable this has greatly improved my confidence; I am definitely going to keep this in mind in the future.

Normally for these types of videos I click, I watch the comments and then I judge If It's worth to watch. Nothing special in the comments but something told me to keep waching.

Dunbars number really isn’t a reliable metric for people we assert as our dominance hierarchy. Firstly it was achieved with frankly dishonest logarithmic scales mapping the number of identifications apes have in their brain and adjusting for human brain size(which we have yet to assert is logically consistent). Bees, birds and many other animals travel in far larger groups with far smaller brains.
Secondly, as you outlined, the mean groupings were 150, meaning a considerable amount of people don’t fall anywhere close to this metric. Weddings are attended only by people you like, so they’re not even a similar to a dominance hierarchy of people as people you don’t like aren’t included.
Lastly, it’s easy to take a number like 150 and retroactively assert a bunch of arbitrary statistics that retroactively support this view, but consider the clear counter example the fact most people follow far more than 200 people on Instagram. Simply read Dunbar’s papers. His statistics are based on weak assumptions about the brain. His correlations are contrived. Neurology is new field. Many findings are headline grabbing yes, but they are not being replicated as easily.

I always find this sort of knowledge fairly depressing. My libido is absolutely broken from post finasteride syndrome, has been for over 6 years, so talking to women is always littered with doubt because I fear I could be a massive dissapointment to her. I still lift, challenge my self, get competitive but the lack of lust in my life has catapulted me into mediocrity.
This just goes down as just doing your own thing. That you should look at someone better. As they deserve everything. But look at people as what they have accomplished

I don’t give a damn about famous people and Instagram is just to post cool stuff and check on friends, and i check it about once a month and sometimes less often. But sometimes i notice myself getting all depressed over just one or two photos of acquaintances doing crazy things in amazing places- well known feeling, especially in these latest two generations, but I’m glad to hear some affirmation that I’m right to avoid it and to not care about famous people
