I so relate!!!!!!
I have had the gift to see the Cure on six occasions, and in my 60 years on planet earth I have never seen a band so word and note perfect, they get better with age.
Yep! This whole album!
@@robertbrimage472 awesome!
The Cure..... a band of brilliant musicians fronted by a genius
What he said ⬆️
Well said, one of those rare times when it’s not a meaningless quip :-)
Ditto.
I had this song in my dream last night, stunning.
YES!
Masterpiece
Plainsong has this awesome power to captivate me, pull me over and through huge waves of emotions and then reduce me to tears. And decades on, it never fades. It feels like time travel, it’s pure magic. This performance is gorgeous
Indeed very well discribed.
Also to me😢💙
The sound & visual quality of this video…. WOW. How stunning, seeing Disintegration album cover on the side of the huge Sydney Opera House😍
My best friend died two weeks ago... Our first concert was The Cure in Essen/Germany 1989 and I remember this song, and how I felt when the lights went on at 2:05
That is a memory to cherish. I’m sorry for your loss.
Mir auch 😭
A perfect way to open the album. Just makes me breathless and so many memories flood
just a time less piece of music ftom my youth that'll never die. its the cure for ever.....
'it's just the way I smile' is a perfect ending to this song. Incredible.
I cant breath, I cant smile, I only cry. But its okay. This band and Pink floyd's songs are always hitting me in few seconds
Something about this song both sang to my heart in 1990 and it still sings to my heart today....
It's about as perfect as a song can get, you know?
“It’s about as perfect as…” is a thought I have about way too many cure songs . Unbelievable talent
Of course we know...😊
His posture and gestures when saying "it's just the way I smile", like saying "I know it's weird but this the best I can do, and can you say it's not beautiful? So let's live"
This song is so meaningful to me.
Disintegration was the very first CD I ever bought. I got it just after release in 1989. I was in my late teens. I was so excited to try out the new CD player I bought with my own hard earned money. The CD was $16.99 way back in 1989 ($41.85 in 2023 dollars) which was a lot of money for a teenager back then. I carefully held the CD by the edges which was recommended at the time, put it into the tray. Turned the volume up, shut the lights off and laid on my bed looking at the ceiling.
Now for the real part of the story....
My mind drifted in and out mostly thinking about a girl I really liked at school.
As a teen, there were two things I just hadn't figured out yet...
1) How to push away my shyness
2) Find the courage to start a conversation with this girl, more than just a "hi"
Sad part is that I never did get that courage until in my 20's, but not talking to her is still one of my biggest regrets of the heart.
She vanished about 6 months before graduation. I think she must have moved. I have no idea where she ended up. But I think of her often and think what might have been.
_"and you smiled for a second"_
Thank you for listening. and thank you The Cure for helping us navigate our emotions with your powerful music.
Reading this gave me chills. I’m about ten years younger based on your description, but totally relate otherwise.
I listened to this song on repeat on my discman in HS. Shy guy here (at least, in my teens) and I feel like I missed a great opportunity. I’m Glad Mr Smith can write songs for my own soul.
It's weird...I have almost the same story but from the opposite angle. I was 100% metalhead at the time, complete with mullet, and terrible with girls. Until one night at a small house party, where I only really knew one other person there, I decided to pitch my normal shyness & hesitation and be the rude, overconfident guy that always seemed to get the girls I was interested in...and it worked. Or at least, it worked for a while...got her number, and a first kiss, that night, took her out that weekend, spent many a night over the rest of the summer driving around with her, on the phone with her, thinking about her. And then the summer ended, and I went off to college, and she stayed there to finish high school, and we fell out of touch as our lives grew in different directions.
She was the one who got me into what we then called "alt rock", bands like The Cure, and Depeche Mode, Echo & The Bunnymen, Souixsie and the Banshees. And yet all these years, and many other "loves" (to varying degrees), later, this song in particular still makes me think of her and that last summer before childhood officially ended and growing up truly started.
_It's just the way I smile, she said_
@@Harv72b Thanks for sharing your story! There are some songs that really sink in deep, and later recalled as memory time travels. I listen to *some* current music, but my playlists are songs of yesteryear. I now understand how my parents mostly listened to Elvis, Sinatra and The Beatles for so many years.
You have more to share....
There are no words to describe the emotions listening to this song
None at all!!!!!!!!
yes, i seem to have no emotions listening to this song. kinda missed me by the mile or im maybe not in the mood or stoned enough...
Absolutely
It's ok in boring mundane way.
@@lordelpus2099 Wendy's(trademark) is boring. The Cure and "Plainsong" are ephemeral.
One of the few 80s bands that can still fill stadiums. That tells you something. Truly unique.
This guy is a legend
"It's just the way I smile" you said. PURE MAGIC.
Maybe it's just me but I think by standing on stage from the start he helps giving the rest of the band the right credit they deserve. He's not playing on anticipation to jump on stage. Chapeau.
This is easily one of their best songs, the keys in the beginning with the bass (which is played on guitar live haha) and then simon starts playing the guitar bit. Then the cherry on top of an already perfect symphony, Robert starts singing. Just beautiful
The Cure has this ability to sing youth. Sound of dream. Visions. Forever. Beautiful. Shinny. Bright. Warm. Cold. Landscapes. Light. Death. Eternety.
Love all the words you described of them so well
holy moly .... still got it x
Time is fleeting. Embrace the now.
"I think I'm old and I'm feeling pain, " you said
"And it's all running out
Like it's the end of the world, " you said
Nothing plain about this song more you hear it just gets better and better
Love how he combs the crowd at the beginning, in a way showing his gratitude to his allegiance of fans, now and forever
The cure is coming to Philadelphia, 2023. Wells Fargo , June 24th. Yes I will be there, and with someone who truly appreciates one of the best groups ever and a lead singer who has made great lyrics music that you can't get enough of. The cure, music hall of Fame, and one of the best bands to come out of 80's..
❤😊😊
I would literally cry if I ever heard this song live
I did
It was amazing!
I ugly cried so hard. It was transcendent.
Everytime when I listen to Disintegration which is my personal number one album of all time, I know what happens. I know the windchimes, I know what follows, I know everything. But then, everytime the same story, it hits me like a hammer when the keyboards, the bass and the drums enter the room suddenly.
I know what it does with me. I know that this simple song touches me so deeply everytime I listen to it. It's an absolute unbelievable song. Thank you, thank you, thank you for this specific song. It shivers down my spine. And then you know: There is nothing more that you will ever need.
Plainsong will stay one of the best songs that I know.
you are not alone, when and how you use these words 'everytime' 'windchimes' 'know what follows' 'know everything' 'bass' 'simple song' 'touches' 'spine' 'nothing' & 'plainsong' ~ i hear you, same same
God bless henning
Welcome to the new world
You capture EVERYTHING about Plainsong so eloquently....Thank you for your amazing ability to convey what many of us feel and KNOW about this masterpiece 😻
Beautifully worded, it's haunting EVERYTIME one listens to it.
Why is this song so underrated?
I'm going to see then for the first time, in a week. I'm so excited, I hope they play Plainsong that night!
😊❤❤
opening shot is amazing.
It's strange how time passes. I bought this 1991 as a young teen and it I listened to it every day until Wish came out and my mom bought me that one. Now, I listen to these songs with my kids, some who are not kids anymore. In fact, every now and then we do music sessions and play a few of the pop radio songs from the 80's and 90's and then play the Cure and Depeche Mode and a few others that I loved so long ago, and I am so pleased that my kids can hear what I heard and like what I liked. The Cure is timeless and just the thing for a few of us in each generation.
What an album!! Plainsong transitioning onto Pictures of You has to be one of rock's top song combos ever. So beautiful
Yes!
I know exactly what you mean. I think actually Disintegration is some kind of conceptalbum.
Bigger (not fat), slowly, gray... and together were getting older. The great and so shy Robert and me. The Cure were always on my side.
Love the words you said is lovely
Saw them in 89....Opened with Plainsong....Never been anything quite like that rush since!!! Powerful stuff!!
The moved and sweetest Robert's smile makes sense to my whole life spent listening the Plainsong 💖
best song from the best album every written.
I listened to The Cure back in the 80s... my young adolescent days..... but now at age 50.... I HEAR THE CURE! Thanks Robert..... your lyrics are incredibly connected to my life. The music floats like a spirit searching for a home.... and that home is with me.
Very well said indeed.
This song literally brings me to tears every time I hear it..!!! There is a certain beauty in the melancholy that Robert projects
I'm always at a loss for words when I watch this, at the point of weeping.
Thx to the CURE,,,,,,, I've been CURED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
My fiancée and I made a pact. No matter where we are or what we are doing, we dance to this song. Always. Every time.
The Cure helped me get through Desert Storm and even these days I find myself still needing to "Trance Out" with Disintegration. Thank you for posting this
I was also in DS (Task Force Ripper - USMC) I had a portable CD player and I remember listening to this song while staring at the stars.
@@Joelfcfan1 Semper Fi. Thank you for your service.
So cool, glad he has helped in so many ways,I cannot Express how I feel about this man, just pure luck on my part to find him in my times of need
@@Joelfcfan1 Also listening to this while killing innocent civilians for oil..?
Henry Rollins isn’t it interesting how people who completely differ from Robert smith’s philosophy on war and violence would claim be into his music this much? Either they’re casual fans or they’re too vapid to interpret his lyrics... or both...
My favourite album "Disintegration" by: The Cure. 1989 was a great year for music. I was 18 and loving this album from my favourite band.
You're right... what a great year 1989 was in music. Pleased we can still enjoy it 30 years on in this spectacular setting. 🙏🏻
We're the same age and my name is Jerry too lol. I also LOVE the Cure to this day
"Disintegration" is by far the greatest Cure album.
@@EndoftheTownProductions 👍
I was born a year after in 1990, my father was a Cure fan, more so Pink Floyd, U2, Fleetwood Mac ect, the list goes on. But Listening to The cure in my younger days left a mark that will never leave me. Robert is an absolute genius with his lyrical ambiguity! Oh and my favorite song is by far "The Same Deep Water".
I know you also smiled when seeing Robert smiling at the beginning.
OptimusXian Prime ..Yeah!!... I smiled.😁...I was even happier than Robert I think!!! LOVE 💜PLAINSONG!!!
@@nancysmith4217 and you replayed that scene twice huh?
i cried
Me too
It's really nice
music from another galaxy 🙌
Of course I'm not crying listen to this!!!
I'm Histerically crying😭😭
When I first heard it back in the 80s I didn’t appreciate the magic
... the moment when you are at a Cure concert and you hear the jingle... and you know they are opening with Plainsong & POY and everything is gonna be fine... just priceless!
Shut up. You were not at any Cure concert.
This is my favorite song…I don’t know why…it’s just brain tingling perfection. When I die, play it at my funeral…I’ll be spinning and dancing into the afterlife
this is one of the best live versions of this amazing deep methodical song.
Best bassline of all time
Musical brilliance! Their songs unfold and draw you in. They’re like a beautiful journey ❤

It transcends!
Turn it up, lie down, close your eyes, open your mind and be blown away.
Seen these lads at the RDS Dublin back in the early 80s and they opened with this song. I remember it like it were yesterday. Love how the cure always stayed true to themselves. So much respect ✊
Che spettacolo plainsong❤️che emozione.....❤️❤️❤️😀
Life is worth living to see THIS
WOWWWWWWWW💖💖💖💖💖💖
First time I heard Plainsong thanks
Excellent
Robert Smith looks like my mom who passed away. I love them both so much.
Stunning.
the guy on bass enjoys the music so much he can barely stand still
Thanks for Sharing
even though this song sounds like something you'd hear in a funeral parlor it still makes me cry.
I have the opposite impression. It sounds majestic and transcendent. It sounds hopeful and joyous.
@@JohnnyLREACTS that's how I feel about "Pictures Of You".
It’s just the way I smile, you said.
Seen in concert since the 80s 1 favorite
That was incredible
Thank You Thank you!
On Vinyl - CD - Deluxe Set, this song instantly makes me cry.

"Disintegration is the best album ever!", Kyle Broflovski, South Park, 1998
absolutely amazing and breathtaking...
Absolutely amazing and beautiful song by the one and only Robert Smith, love him so much
Waiting for the day when the Cure performs with a full orchestra. So many of their songs have synthesizers that could be played with live instruments. Jason can keep his job and play a piano.
Absolute Classic.
I was 22 when this album came out
.Fan from when I was younger Live the Cure❤
26. Still so moving at 57
I do like this song. Its both dark and charming.
This song can be played on my funeral
This song is simply mesmerizing. 😍

Pure Times never ends
After all of these decades still the PERFECT SONG
Omg je n’ai pas de mot tellement j’aime ce titre...
Well say absolutely brilliant touching song
Amazing ,beathiful song
Bloody amazing venue.
Robert Smith is such an incredible Class Act!
he escuchado mucha música desde Zappa hasta Robert Johnson pero Robert es uno de los tres músicos que más me ha marcado en la vida, no sabría describir mi existencia sin su música
I used to have dreams where I was in a place similar to the Pool Rooms which is a level of the Backrooms, but it had water slides that never ended. I was endlessly going through these colorful tubes with this song faintly playing.
Plainsong made me want wind chimes in 1990. I still have them.
Fabulous, thanks for posting Sydney Opera House//
Love the base player. Always doing excellent riffs.
I love you The Cure The Best Robert Smith
Oh so totally agree with you as well and iam an avid fan of this fantastic band
