I served in the Australian Army for a short part of my life. One day we had an American pilot on transfer training from the U.S flying the chopper into a jungle training area in North Queensland. This song was blasting on the sound system. We had never really heard of "The Cure" When I hear this song now I can close my eyes and be transported back to another time when my mates and I were so much younger. I have loved this band ever since that day.

I have to disagree with you on that. I love The Cure and saw them live in the early 90's at William and Mary. All they did was just stand there and barely moved. You could not understand a thing Robert said in between songs. It was one of the worst concerts I have ever been to. I still love them but will never pay to go see them.

    • @eboethrasher
      @eboethrasher 2 года назад +8

@@StephenBard Then you clearly never listened to them live. Bands don't have to bounce around on stage to be interesting. And after you listen to them talk a lot, you understand what they are saying most of the time. It took me a while to be able to decipher most of what Robert says, but sometimes it is also just hard to hear people when they talk live. It is a shame that you have chosen such petty reasons to miss out on one of the best live bands out there. Especially in their prime. They are not nearly as good now as they were in the early to late 90s. But you go ahead and keep on having your weird arbitrary reasons to judge people, and keep seeing bands that are actively checking their fitbits during shows, and I'll watch people who focus on playing well and sounding good. And who actually write and play music I like. And clearly you didn't watch Simon as he doesn't usually stand still that much.

Absolutely enchanted by 'Pictures of You' from The Cure's iconic 1989 album 'Disintegration.' This track is a beautiful example of how simplicity in music can create profound emotional depth. It's built around a core set of four chords - A, E, D, G - that weave a repetitive, mesmerizing pattern throughout the song. What truly sets it apart, though, is not just the chords themselves, but the way The Cure layers these simple progressions with rich textures and atmospheric effects. The guitar work, bass lines, and percussion all intertwine to create a soundscape that's both haunting and deeply moving. It's a testament to the band's genius in crafting a sound that's complex in emotion yet straightforward in structure. This song isn't just about the chords; it's about how they're played and the mood they create. It's a perfect example of The Cure's ability to convey powerful feelings through seemingly simple musical choices.

A gift for that moment...Robert's Manager wrote back to me recently when i sent it to Robert...i think they got it!
"" WHEN HE SMILES, WE KNOW HE'S ROBERT SMITH ""
      CHORUS.
      ROBERT'S TRAVELLED MILES AND MILES,
AS HE'S SMILED.. FOR MILES AND MILES,
AND WHEN HE SMILES, WE SEE HE'S NO MYTH,

      Verse 1.

      Their songs, they bounce along,

      AND WHEN ROBERT SINGS,
      "PICTURES OF YOU",
      HE MAKES US REALISE,
      WITH THOUGHTS HE CAN'T DISGUISE,
      RADIATING FROM HIS EYES,
SOME DAYS ARE FILLED WITH BLUE.

      Verse 2
That hair, still long upon his head,
His tunes, they're still so cute,
      PRE-CHORUS.
      AND WHEN ROBERT SINGS,
      "PICTURES OF YOU",
      HE MAKES US REALISE,
      WITH THOUGHTS HE CAN'T DISGUISE,

BRIDGE to final PRE-CHORUS and CHORUS(x2).
AND I'M SURE WE'VE FOUND "THE CURE",
      A LONG TIME AGO, AGO,
AND THANK THE HEAVENS, THEY EXIST,
AS THEY'RE SO HARD TO RESIST,
AS THEY TAKE TO THE STAGE AGAIN.
      PRE-CHORUS.
      AND WHEN ROBERT SINGS,
      "PICTURES OF YOU",
      HE MAKES US REALISE,
      WITH THOUGHTS HE CAN'T DISGUISE,
      RADIATING FROM HIS EYES,
SOME DAYS ARE FILLED WITH BLUE.
      CHORUS.

And then I listened to it in it’s entirety....and while I cannot remember hearing another say that I’ve had a history of being at a loss for words, I’m unable to communicate anymore. My body is quivering from this music. I probably shouldn’t say : that this is a song, sung by the greatest singer ever...that could prompt a sane person to leave their life and walk the earth to find another way or thing or person or purpose or ‘something’ that could compare to how this song makes me feel (and I don’t even Know how it makes me feel. The intro is one of the greatest of all time. I'm a listener of very eclectic music tastes including psychadelic metal like "Tool" but this is the best intro of a song ever. Hands down. Tool is the greatest band ever, but, this song alone may be better than anything tool ever made. To put it into perspective, I'm a fan of modern and old pop rock, punk, pop punk, psychadelic metal, psychadelic rock (young and old), grunge etc. It's crazy how good this song is.

Drove across the USA from Vancouver to Toronto during two January 1991 cold days with a badly broken leg. No frills money, just enough to pay for gas to get back to friends in Toronto. Played this album over and over and over again to keep me awake and made it within 48 hours arriving just in time as money for gas was no more. Wonderful memories and thanks to Robert & Co. for getting me through that amazing ordeal, but really not an ordeal as I look back at it now 30 years later in 2020. It was pure pleasure to share that ride with The Cure.

I've been looking so long at these pictures of you
That I almost believe that they're real
I've been living so long with my pictures of you
That I almost believe that the pictures are all I can feel
Remembering you standing quiet in the rain
As I ran to your heart to be near
And we kissed as the sky fell in, holding you close
How I always held close in your fear
Remembering you running soft through the night
You were bigger and brighter and wider than snow
You screamed at the make-believe, screamed at the sky
And you finally found all your courage to let it all go
Remembering you, fallen into my arms
Crying for the death of your heart
You were stone white, so delicate
    Lost in the cold
You were always so lost in the dark
Remembering you how you used to be
    Slow drowned, you were angels
    So much more than everything
Hold for the last time then slip away quietly
Open my eyes, but I never see anything
If only I'd thought of the right words
I could have held on to your heart
If only I'd thought of the right words
I wouldn't be breaking apart all my pictures of you
Looking so long at these pictures of you
But I never hold on to your heart
Looking so long for the words to be true
    But always just breaking apart
    My pictures of you
There was nothing in the world that I ever wanted more
Than to feel you deep in my heart
There was nothing in the world that I ever wanted more
Than to never feel the breaking apart
    My pictures of you
