Excellent forum for two current & progressive intellects of our time. Because such discussions have lasting pertinence but also a specific historical context, please ALWAYS INCLUDE THE DATE of the original talk/broadcast somewhere in the details/notes for the program/talk.
Many thoughtful points were made, but I particularly appreciated the distinction between Optimism and Hope, in that Hope generally suggests more individual activism versus the more background or collective scope of Optimism.
Modern humans have the intelligence & technology to communicate/discuss, develop & create/implement social systems that will enhance human lives & develop/harness even greater human potential, but only through broader consensus building, collaboration, and collective commitment/action built around maximum participation/buy-in of the individual citizens of the world.

Mr. Hararri, we admire and appreciate your work a lot, you are without doubt one of the greatest achievers of our time but when it comes to science or vaccination you don't mention the negative aspects of it but just the posetive ones..
Today everything has turned to business and very profite oriented, untrustworthy..
One question, what do you think about the pharma lobbying and the big businesses the doctors are making with vaccination while the poor nursing staff and other less fortunate people are working so hard just to meet their basic needs?
Here in Germany doctors are just making more money out of the crises like never before ..
I thought being a doctor demands a lot of responsibility and ethical behavior.
.Another question in terms of climate change, why don't the rich just stop flying for fun or shopping with their private jets all over the world , or reduce the lavish lifestyle they are living by? , or does it just apply to the average consumer ? 🙏

He suggests that we have no freewill, while choosing words and language to convey a message corresponding with, what he sees as reality. How can he do that if he has no free will? Why does his message matter if I have no freewill to hear it and modulate my behavior as a result? He is a fool pretending to be a scholar. If we all have no freewill, how does he question a person's response to the manufactured virus/covid crisis. harari is an antchrist, you will see.

What I think the lesson to be learned with the pandemic is that if we are able to collaborate in large numbers as a species, we have to be able to develop better and faster collaboration frameworks for our human society to be able to overcome real problems more efficiently and not only to drive forward in lucrative technological advancements, it doesn't matter if for covid-19 or the climate change, because what I observe daily is that society has advanced knowledge to overcome problems but is not flexible enough in mass scale specially to implement the solutions because of inappropriate policies, obsolete structures and dystopian ideologies.... it's amazing that our smartness is being always misplaced and not for the common good is like a layer of our completeness as an human specie is missing and I think that is the fundamental issue that has to change.

Thank you for this debate, very interesting... The thing I'm stuck on is that, it's not about "right" or "wrong", or "good or bad"... it's more about entitlement, greediness, empathy, convenience, selflessness, shrewdness, values, principles and the ego... and pessimism and positivity vary according to one's upbringing. For example, I grew up in Venezuela where I've experienced a very corrupt government, developed countries exploit the country only for its natural resources. Taking for the country... But it's only due to my experiences of having travelled and observing different ways of doing things is that I have been able to come to my own conclusions as to what is "good/bad".

These are also the societies that brought innovation on all kinds of fronts. This means that at least we have a shot as a species to get more peaceful. Of course these societies aren’t perfect at all, but they do serve as models for the world as a starting point. Showing that humans are capable of moving in the right direction. A direction of a world full of safety, health, longevity and innovating together. I believe humans are capable of this. That the possibility is there.

The "moderator" clearly didn't want the discussion to be done in a moderate way, she repeatedly tried for a "battle of the minds", illustrating Bregman's point about the negative influence of the media which focuses on bad news, its motto is "If it bleeds it leads". This constantly reinforces the negative view of human nature which Bregman is trying to show is mistaken. Despite her, the two gave a good example of a shared interest being discussed in a nuanced, informed, moderate way.

Hi Yori. I appreciate your comment. My father was a committed Rotarian and I got to attend meeting with him a few times. He was also dedicated to world peace, not as a cliche, but as an actual goal. He was President of People to People International when he died. On his deathbed he told his doctors that he would be giving a speech in Hong Kong in six weeks which would be translated into many languages. People to People was established by US President Eisenhower for intellectual and cultural exchange between countries. I’m not certain of its current state, but you may find a framework there without having to reinvent the wheel. He traveled all around the world from China to Romania to Jamaica visiting with other judges and lawyers. But I’m sure many categories of exchange were made: businessmen, bankers, artists, etc. I think you’ll find it to be of interest.

There is no discussion about the implications of the lock downs on health and improving health by food, movement, mediation and so ford. Most covid death are obese people, research says.
    - Rutger is strong about the limits of technologie and i do agree.
    - Rutger i thinks you are wrong about the danger about social media. Cambridge is maybe a hype but it is a start. And we see the effect of propaganda on social media.
    - Basic income could be a good thing, but ho decides how much we own. What do you think about self in life created institution which are nog chosen democratic.
    - Is it not by saying that the printing of money of the US has no consequence?
Check Bob de Wit prof. Neyrode, Strategy. Society 4.0
    - You talk about conspiracy theory but if i Remember Rutger write about the corruption of people in power. What do you think about The Big Reset??

Yuval seems more mature, the adult in the room. Aware the power games happening behind the scenes amongst the global superpowers. And that aint pretty or good-natured. Bregman should probably spend more time with high profile politicians, CEOs, secret services. It would radically change his naive human nature view. Bregman also seems at heart more of a politician than an historian. He seems to search for history that matches his pre-conceived strong political views. Yuval comes across as more a-political, therefore more credible

I absolutely agree. While I do feel it’s slightly unfair to pit them against each other, considering how much younger, idealistic, and less-informed Bregman is, it’s also an important debate to be had, because the book Humankind is hugely successful and honestly a bit misleading (or cherry-picked). It’s always important to see how ideas and minds fare against each other, even if sometimes that means one will do a lot better than the other.

  • @junavaes1542

Interesting debate. I liked Yuval’s oneliner: 2020 showed the unparalled success of science and the complete failure of politics. Yet I agree we people have also shown we can go along with myth, fake news and truth. I do believe that Bregman’s perspective on our nature can help energize the new generation to lead human kind into a new direction. The challenges are enormous. Yuval’s biggest fear we are about to enter a mass surveillance society is frightening. Covid could legitimize it. Rutger’s fear that we need to adress the global transormation is equally challenging.
Do watch it and do make your mind up. To me it is not about who won te debate, about opposing views. It is about thinking what we need to deal with our present challenges to get a better outcome for the next generations.

Look at politics in the US, two parties that should be working toward the same objective in a friendly manner despite differing methods and policies as for reaching the objectives has turned into a Hatfield-McCoy rivalry that is seen as existential for each side. This is the main reason I have moved to the center from the left. I have my own views and ideals and ethics but I can keep them in check for the good of achieving a common objective, realizing that as passionate and righteous as I am about my views, someone with the opposite views is equally as passionate and righteous. And, so to double down on my righteousness is not helpful. Yes, we do need to debate and certain views can "win" or "lose" but the real problem is in failing to compromise. The perfect recipe for disaster that will end the democracy is for the ideological righteous extremists to gain control of government and demonize the other side. We are getting closer to this with both sides: the right with their religious, nationalist agenda and the left with their politically correct agenda. Look at extremist ideologies in the world, disasters all. Look at how humiliation of losers (to some degree with the Confederate cause in the US and with the Germans in WW1 especially) resulted in resentment and a festering wounds that inspired revenge.

Perfect timing for the two popular historians to be moderated by Zanny. It appears all of them recognize the paradox of human nature but not sure why humans are fundamentally good and not bad or evil. I read and am very impressed by Rutger’s Utopia for Realists and Humankind. I would also like to express that I am convinced that mechanistic or reductionist science will not be able to answer the true or fundamental nature of our species. Rather holistic science of Australian biologist Jeremy Griffith (author of Freedom) and bonobo researcher Vanessa Woods (co-author of Survival of the Friendliest) answers how, when and why we acquired our good moral instinct (gene based learning) and why this is misunderstood by our newly developed conscious thinking mind (nerve based learning) and why understanding this conflict and getting clarity on our species' genetic orientation which is morally good instinct can resolve the so called “human condition” and put our species back on a positive track. I am very impressed and convinced with the interview on human condition with biologist Jeremy Griffith and happy to share a link to the interview that was done during the early days of the pandemic. To shift away from a war based civilization, to globally work together. I believe part of the solution lies in developing an additional universal economic system The Barter - that demonstrates shifting values - acknowledging that we all have self worth and care for each other. Transcendence vs a domination culture - a shift in the global psychology. A better civilization simulation... perhaps. The ultra rich will donate (charity) a specified amount in digital 'chips' or 'credits' that individuals can earn through an incentive program that creates opportunity for people (earning much better than giving). A work bank and idea bank, 1st to be spent at the places where the donation occurred as small business will not be able to participate until it gets underway. Some ideas...
