This idea is brilliant! Most would probably go to all of the work of removing the posts and installing 4x4's. I'm not all that familiar with the hardware/fasteners for building so when I see someone use different ones it helps me to think outside the box. Thanks

Interesting way to do it. I just made column boxes out of 2x4's and 2x'6's and sheathed all my sch40 poles. Then I just secured the wooden columns to the poles with self tapping screws (they have to be pre-drilled obviously). Then from there you just build a wooden fence like you would normally.

thanks, it was a way bigger project than I thought. If I did it again I would do a more simple fence design with less wood. The full 2x4 cedar top rail was an expensive detail over 200 feet!

I'm getting married next month we have a huge backyard we want to use but the front yard is ugly :( especially cuz we have a chain link fence and it's worn out and bent and not very nice at all. The poles or mounted on concrete but are still real good. Knowing I can use the post for the picket fence is going to save me tons of money and labor. Thanks for sharing :)

this is exactly like a house I stayed at in Portlandia, I saw it and was like I want to do that. And then I watched 12 videos about post rot and was like ugh, never want to repair rotten fence posts ever again, after that one time when I had to do 20 new posts and rails for 180 ft of fence. Pressure treated mind you.

Just came across this video and would like to tell anyone looking to replicate this method they no longer sell or make those fence brackets anymore so don’t bother spending the time looking. Went to site in the video and used link and they are no longer around anywhere. Such a shame because this is a amazing method and was a great product for wrapping metal fence poles.

I have 320' on one side and 260' on another and about 150 on the ends. So I have an enormous amount of wood. Fences like these take years to finish if it's a one man show and can go in range from 20-40K and up. A fence like this alone can immeasurably boost your homes value. There isn't a single nail in my fence, it's all coated screws. Expensive and time consuming, but nothing should ever back out.

@@showgunscontractors1368 do you have these brackets? Just asking as they were discontinued some time ago. I happen to have some of the non wrap ones.. so they are shorter and the rail install can be between posts but I just ran them over the front of the posts to guarantee wind tolerance/resistance since we are in a high wind storm area and everything I read said to always build the fence face in direct opposition if the prevailing winds. I installed those on 100+ feet for 3-4 years now and I am just finishing installing another 115ft.

The brackets are fine but my fence is leaning where it's on a steep slope and the footings are only 6" deep. So I suppose the fence is only as good as it's footings. But the brackets are quite strong even with 10' panels in places.

Cedar columns for me would have just been way over budget. Looks great. Can tell you take pride in your work.

With 2x4 sides and 1x6 front and back pieces on your posts, your final dimensions should have been 5" x 5.5" rather than 5.5" x 5.5" like a true 1x6. How were you able to find post caps to fit? Or were you able to square the posts up somehow?

I don't know if anyone is able to answer this, but I notice that the oz-post brackets are made for 2 3/8" OD steel posts, while the vast majority of chain link posts in the world are 1 7/8" OD (i.e., line poles). Does anyone know if these brackets can be used with the smaller poles (e.g., using an adapter or bending them) ? To the author if this video - did you have all 2 3/8" posts ?? Thanks!
