In Canada we like to make sure the pretty side of the fence faces outwards not towards the property- this adds property value by making the yards look better from the street- this also ensures hardware cant be tampered with from the ourside- part of code especially if there's a pool ect.. Beautifuly built and looks great!
Where I live in the US, it’s REQUIRED to put the finished side out, or they make you take it down and do it over. Obviously this is different from place to place, but people like to think their rules/experience must be true for everyone, everywhere. 😂
Looks like a backyard and back alley, so aesthetics aren't as important. Wouldn't be too hard to box in each pole with 3 pickets or something, just to make it look a little neater.
I did the same thing in my carport, 3:48 but I used pre-made stockade fence panels. I like the hangers that you used on the horizontal bracing, these hangers look far superior to the c-style pipe hangers (tube straps) I used.
Nice work handyman! I would have almost been tempted to change the posts with all you had to do to save those but that's why you make the big bucks 😂. I love ready seal from home depot for staining a fence. No runs and always comes out looking nice. Keep up the good work handyman!
Where’d you get those post extensions!? That’s a great idea. I have a metal fence I’d like to switch to a taller wood privacy fence just like this. Good job.
I use Readyseal Transparent Stain and Sealer or Behr Solid Stain and Sealer on my fences depending on the age of the fence/look the customer is going for.
Nice work. The only upgrade would be to use brush-killer on the fence two or more weeks before trimming. If you spray-kill the plants/vines & wait long enough they'll pull off by hand. In ivy situations I'd want 90 or more days for the plants to dry b/c somehow it always get in my eye.
I did this on two sides of my back yard. The side facing my neighbor's make shift, thrown together, half metal pieces half wood mess my son and I placed the board's good sides facing into my yard. We couldn't use the neighbor's yard for installation. The back portion, which faces the apartment building across from me, we placed the boards on the outside, as it just looks much better.
What’s with the ladies’ ear protection? (J/k; those who know, know.) Screws down there, eh? Here we have to use nails because screws will break with the extreme (-45F to 115F, 5%-100% humidity) range. We use nails so they can move around a LITTLE. My fence with nails is great; my DIY neighbors’ with screws have half their boards/sections popped every year.
Ready seal cedar color is what I used on my own fence but its been about 3 or 4 years and needs a new coat already. However, i put Cabot on my deck and after a year it still looks like the day i put it on. Cordovian leather color semi solid. When applying you can tell the thickness of the stain is much higher quality than the watery ready seal. I have never used Thompsons Water Seal so not sure on that one.
This is exactly what I was thinking of doing. What kind of clamps are those? I have looked all over for them and my local Home Depot has no idea. Help!
Clear coat for au naturel look, maybe something dark for a hard wood feel or just plain white to reflect more light on the garden if it is not a real sunny place.
If I understand correctly, the pickets you used are not treated. I'm considering using untreated pine on my future fence plus staining and sealing after installation. Since the pickets are not in contact with the ground I'm not sure what the problem would be with this but many people object to it. What do you think? Great video Handyman, thank you.
What kind of brackets did you use for attaching the 2x4 supports to the metal posts? I have a chain link fence I need to convert. Love this idea. Thank you for sharing.
Preservawood “Tahoma Brown” from Home Depot is the stuff I like. I tried the “clear” option first but the wood faded after a year…definitely needed a tinted stain to last a 3+ years in the Colorado sun.
In our town the ordinance says the nice part of the fence must be facing the public areas. This means that you would have to either flip the entire project or do the same posts on the outside. What a pain. This turned out beautifully!!
The public facing side is an alley. Should the homeowner be impressing the homeless? I know it's a city ordinance but in this situation it would be silly.
I call them the Fentanyl Zombies . This is an unkept alley way. I think a lot of people missed that point. If this was a front wing fence the nice side would be put towards the front of the house and street. Thanks for your comments.
I thought you missed an opportunity to play the fiesta music when you were "landscaping" but see you fit it in later! BTW, is that Senor Handyman helping? No way you'd let a random homeowner help you.
@@ElectronicMusicUnderground I don't know where that's true, but you could drive forever around here and never find one like this. The frame is always on the inside.
Great videos, thanks for them. Just discovered you a week ago and am binging them. Got my license and insurance and now doing professionally, starting as a side job first. Question, when you're busy busy, when do you find time to do any estimating of jobs?
Looks really good. You gotta share where you got those cylinders you drove over the posts to add the height, I've never converted a chain link before. Lots of crazy people in the comments talking about how the posts should be on the inside against an alleyway. Like someone is gonna come by with a drill and steal your brackets LOL
Good to see there are some rational thinking people still here. I got metal for the post extension at Home Depot. They are 2 3/8" corner posts for chain link fences. You can get them in 6 foot and 8 foot lengths. I got the brackets at Home Depot too.
I mean to each their own but I probably would have not left the fence posts exposed for aesthetics. Maybe no one sees that but I think building some wood box posts with 1x6s and 1x4s would have been slick. But also I wouldn’t have hired a handy man to build the fence. I would just build it myself so who am I to say anything at all. Especially coming from the guy that waits for the fence panel or pickets to blow over due to rotting, hack it back up, then wait for it completely disintegrate before replacing jt.
Normally yeah but I assume the customer wanted to have the nice look in their yard since it's not shared with their neighbors but we shall see how he does it in part two
shoulda just put vinyl fence no maintenance and done! lifetime of beauty, but not everyone has that budget. Good job handyman you should start doing landscaping! 🤣🤣

never heard of that here in US. people paid good money for a fence so they want to see their pickets.
In Germany too.
Has to look good on the outside, otherwise there is serious irritation going on. Everybody prefers a good looking neighbourhood.
@@Derpherppington That's probably, why the US looks like a third world country from abroad.

I have done this.
good to see i aint the only one.
i painted all the metal black.
Where did you get the extension pieces???
I really miss this format
You're welcome
beautiful fence. but might want to flip the boards to face outward. you made steps for someone walking by to look over the fence.
I did the same thing in my carport, 3:48 but I used pre-made stockade fence panels. I like the hangers that you used on the horizontal bracing, these hangers look far superior to the c-style pipe hangers (tube straps) I used.
What a great idea using the original steel posts. The updated privacy fence and gate look awesome!

Looks great but it's backwards. Unless privacy is all your looking for. Those cross beams need to be on the inside to keep climbers and burglars out.
Great work! I stained my privacy fence behr golden oak. It wonderful! 1:24

I also need this answer!
Home Depot
@@TheHandyman1 any concerns about the posts holding the weight and wind-load of the wood?
For stain color, I like cedar with tons of red. The colors that are deep, dark, brown/red. Instead of brown/orange, which are ok too.
I use Readyseal Transparent Stain and Sealer or Behr Solid Stain and Sealer on my fences depending on the age of the fence/look the customer is going for.
Where did you get the extension post from? Any links ?
Do you have a list of what uou used for the fence? Post splices, mounting brackets for metal post
So whats to keep someone from unscrewing the pole bracket from the wood - on the alley side

Great looking fence. I was a little surprised you didn't install the fence door gate wider to allow access for wide mowers or equipment.

Prob gonna need some used motor oil finish..keep her on par wit the fence👌
Where do I get that truck leveling systems😂

What are those brackets called holding the wood to the post? I can’t find them
So all the nuts to disassemble it are on the outside?
The clean up alone is a grand
Clear coat for au naturel look, maybe something dark for a hard wood feel or just plain white to reflect more light on the garden if it is not a real sunny place.
What did you use to clamp the wood to the pipe and what was the parts for extending the pipe?
Here in the U.K we would have left small gaps in the fence for the wind to pass through, good job though

Can you install a vinyl fence in front of a chain linked?
Damn! That's some hard work you did there. You are to be coomended.
What kind of brackets did you use for attaching the 2x4 supports to the metal posts? I have a chain link fence I need to convert. Love this idea. Thank you for sharing.
Hell yeah git r done. Im about to do the same but leaving the inner part of the fence. Crappy neighbors

How much did they have to pay to turn you into a landscaper
I love the way, you built the fence
Not sure if I missed the link above... what is the Dewalt chainsaw specs\info ?
Hey Handy, just starting the video now. Wanted to get a quick hello in first
Howdy
curious its always good side out. right..
What extensions did you use for the metal posts?
Did something like this to save the customer money last summer. Good to see I wasn’t crazy.
Man HM got himself an apprentice LMAO cedar looking good
I thought you missed an opportunity to play the fiesta music when you were "landscaping" but see you fit it in later! BTW, is that Senor Handyman helping? No way you'd let a random homeowner help you.
What is the name of that metal pipe sleeve he used
Good idea using the older post !
You get all the good jobs ,especially dealing with that old fencing .
so...what do you do when the fence sags between posts
Damn Glyn, making those posts sing!
I’m pretty sure most almost all cases. The nice side of the poster supposed to be on the inside of the property?
@@ElectronicMusicUnderground I don't know where that's true, but you could drive forever around here and never find one like this. The frame is always on the inside.
Go up a size on the post so you don't have to hammer them on unless they started with the big ones looks good
With the sun out there, you have to use very good UV stain. Looks very clean.

Surprised you didn’t find any homeless people in that brush! Fence looks great!
bottom of fence 2x6 pressure treated fence close to ground rots fast. longer life
Why remove the bushes and trees when looking for privacy? The trees and bushes looked like a good privacy wall.
to build the fence?? you do what the customers pay you to do. or go find another job
Great! I didnt see any poison Ivy too.
you doubled the height of the fence without increasing how far down the posts go into the ground. this increases the chance of the fence blowing over.
Is this 10ft spacing?
It looks great so far How much you charge
Good old used motor oil does the job 😂
that spans looks like 12ft , is that going to sag pretty soon ? did u use pocket holes for the gate frame? and can u use it if not. thanks
The spacing was 9ish feet every one was spaced differently
Nice work my friend.
My 2 year old said oh noo when she saw you pushing the post with the bumper

What winch are you running on your rig there Mr. Handyman?
cheap 12k X-bull
I just installed a cheapo X-Power(🤷♂️) 10k pound winch on my car trailer and it works great!
The best thing you can use to seal your fence is used motor
the fence looks great from the inside but the rails on the outside is a climbing ladder
If only you could do something for the outside appearance as well. Perhaps a slightly different exterior look, tho yet still a privacy fence?

shouldnt the nice part of the fence be pointing out towards the street?
If I'm paying i would want the nice part to face me.
Wtf right??

@@TheFilthyReaperyeah, look at the other privacy fences on the road. It must be a private road or something
Depends on your building department rules., If you pull a permit
Just looking for an excuse for a move your bumper🤪
Everyone commenting on direction of finished must have missed the poorly maintained alley, most likely used for trash routes. Great, clean work.
Bro 😂 I love the leveling of the post 😂😂😂
Truck Levelin'
They don’t make ‘em like they used to! The same style chain link today is done with posts that are less than half the gauge thickness!
And 10ft apart
shoulda just put vinyl fence no maintenance and done! lifetime of beauty, but not everyone has that budget. Good job handyman you should start doing landscaping! 🤣🤣
Holy s#$t! The handyman has help! !!!
Wherever you lkke color only oil based must be for the pine family
Men i wish i would like to be your apprentice ....critical thinking on construction this is # one prioritie!
Was that papa handyman?
He is also a landscaper wow, how much per hour you charge for landscaping lol
ready seal. its oil based and goof proof
Handyman immune to poison Ivy I see
Fences make good neighbors!
That fence needs some more posts Handyman, no cutting corners!
Nice work Handyman!
Good to see you hired a good hand!! Lol God bless Brother!
The assesers office approves the work. Thou he thinks a new level would be needed
Too bad your not my handyman. I love that fence.
So you put the service side of the fence to the alley... yeah someone doesn't understand the purpose of the fence...
wood definder
You had plenty of privacy with the vegetation already
Little surprised you did this one. Hope you share what you charged on the business channel. 😊
Expensive fence!!!
Ready Seal
GLYN still looking for the level
If Handyman makes $1000 resetting GFCI outlets, does that make this a $10,000 fence?

You should have done it the other way around
I need this in 419, ASAP
Looks good. Is that the home homer that was helping you hang pickets? You usually don't use helpers.
