@TheHandyman1 What knot did you use on the pergola? Lol
They must have channeled you when they did that! 😂
18:02 isn’t early morning better?
These are the projects I do at my moms house, but instead of $1500 I get a free meal lol
You’re a good son.
At least you get that.
Home food definitely hits different.
Good son & good mom
😂
I can do this type of work, been doing handyman/property maintenance for about 10 years now and cover electrical, joinery, Decorating, plumbing and Gardening/Grounds work. I’m never out of work, I’m learning all the time, there’s nothing I won’t try and learn now, if you seek out the best people for each trade and learn from those people who are willing to teach you the best ways to do things then you’re on to a winner. Don’t forget the people that helped you along the way though, a few crates of beers here and there go a long way when you need to ask them to divulge some of their valuable knowledge in a fix!
I choose my hours, choose my days, I’m booked up for months in advance and wake up loving what I do! 😊
It never ceases to amaze me how long curtain rods hang on with just 4 fine thread drywall screws, and no studs. Pretty amazing! 😆
I have a handyman business in Oregon also. I’m a pretty skilled carpenter and definitely do good work, but you really open my eyes as to why I wasn’t making very good money. You are so fast and efficient at everything you do. It made me realize how much time I waste throughout the day. Just wanted to tell you thank you. Since
I’ve been watching your channel. I’ve gotten a lot faster at the small projects and it’s really helped my business a lot.
Yes, more of these 10ish minute videos between the MASSIVE project videos. Thanks!
Agreed. I think your larger audience is folks that don’t need all the minutiae. Like the wire hook orientation under a terminal screw on an outlet, etc. Love your videos and your buckaroo style. Infotainment at its best. Learning that is fun is remembered.
I did hvac for 7 years. You can add a premade filter housing made out of sheet metal that goes between the return duct and unit. It’s only as thick as a normal filter. About 1”
That’s what i use and my evap coil looked very clean after 10 years of use. I’ve never once rinsed the coil either. I always thought the filter might be inferior to traditional ones but i was wrong.
The condenser coil i do clean yearly, im not a savage ;)
You only need one program start time at 7pm. Each program start time runs all of the zones on that program. Since all three start times are set at 7pm, it effectively does the same thing as just setting start time 1 at 7pm and leaving start times 2 and 3 blank/off.
I like this, go to all different houses and fixing different things! Pretty cool!
That last sprinkler head probably heard you were coming, got scared, then just remedied itself! 😊 Nice work Handy!!
@markadams5429 So in essence what you're saying is Handy is the Chuck Norris of handymen😂

I have always replaced all drywall anchors with toggle bolts. Much stronger and will never pull out of the wall. Old rental owner trick.
Regarding your dryer repair, I usually cut a 2X4X? and place it against the wall to prevent the dryer from moving back. You need at least 2 pieces. I have rentals and this is one way I keep appliances in check.
Like a stop block? That's a good idea. Thanks for the suggestion.
The problem is that it's in a tiny room. If you keep it too far forward you will not be able to unload the dryer. It's kind of a no s sherlock.
Yeah, the tiny room is part of the problem. As soon as it feels tight in there for someone their first instinct is going to be to shove the dryer back further. Stop block for sure, I might make a little shelf the height of the control pannel to make it clean and finished
that and 90 degree close elbows. put one at wall and one on back of dryer, run the hose up and back down in an arch shape. not those are not ideal for air flow, nor is the big arch of vent hose. but better than smashed flat or ripped off.
Yup I had to do same thing with a refrigerator that kept getting pushed back and busting the water line for ice maker
The Handyman can. I get inspired by your can do attitude. Man, nothing slows you down. Not the stripped threads, the broken pipes, the hot neutral wires you my friend are the yes, the GOAT!!!
I find it amazing that people pay you to do that. Good for you to make easy money like that.
Replace the bolts on the furnace with winged bolts.
The problem with Handyman work….at least in calif…. Is that people are only concerned with one thing… The price I sometimes like to ask people, “do you want it done or do you want it done right?“ Most people don’t understand the question. A while back I had a lady who wanted to change a hose bib that was dripping. I told her that she could do it herself and then I could tell her how to do it but she didn’t wanna mess with it OK so I said 40 bucks. She doesn’t call me back no big deal a month later she calls me back. OK I’d like to hire you for $40. Yeah, I can smell a bad scene when something like this happen so I said have you had anybody else work on it. Well yes I did have a guy try to fix it and he came out and it stopped leaking for about a week. And how much did you pay him… $30. So I said OK I can fix it and she goes great so 40 bucks then right and I said no now it’ll have to be 65 and she almost had a cow. And I explain to her that I was positive the guy did not make the situation better and that now not only would I have to takeoff an old hose bib but he probably did something to make my job harder.… Or at least I wasn’t willing to bet that he had not. Then she says well come take a look at it and then give me an estimate. I said that’s not necessary it will be 65 then she says well I’m sure I can find somebody to do it for cheaper. And I said I’m sure you can… You already did but that didn’t work out very well you’re already down 30 how do you spend 40 instead it would’ve been fixed properly. Anyway she finally agrees to the 65 which I had her send me before I went out there because I know how that goes and so I show up and the guy has taken an old rubber washer and jammed it in there trying to stop the leak and he has glued the hose bib on he put glue around the threads to try to stop the leak short term anyway so I took pictures of all of it and I was able to clean it up pretty quick and I put the hose bib on and so I said I’ll tell you what if you tell me the name of the guy who worked here before me and his phone number I’ll cut your bill the 55. So she did and then I found him and happily posted those pictures on his Facebook to complement his work. After the first hundred or so people got done laughing at him you can imagine he was not very happy with me and I think he threaten to sue me for defamation or something else but of course truth is a defense and this scenario is not uncommon many people will call two or three people until it’s really messed up and then they want you to come fix it for chief it’s really pretty amazing and the thing is you know if somebody is poor then a lot of times I give them a break because we’ve all been there but most of the people who are the cheapest or not poor they spend money on purchase and a third car that’s unnecessary etc. I mean when somebody says they’re going to paint your house for $500 and everybody else is 2000 how do you think that guy is going to manage pain in your house for 500. First he has no license and he’s uninsured for sure second he is going to send your pay down so much the most what’s gonna go on your wall is going to be water I’ve had people tell me “oh no he used Sherman Williams paint and I always ask did you see him open a brand new Sherwin-Williams cans for did he have a big bucket in the smaller Sherwin-Williams cans and then the lightbulb goes on in their head the guy is pouring cheap paint into a Sherwin-Williams can. I know somethings are cheaper than others in this world but for the most part you get what you pay for the same is true for lawyers I’ve had a lawyer friend that I referred Cases to and this guy just by writing a letter can usually get people an extra 25 or $50,000 on their case because of his reputation these are for small cases of course and so rather than being grateful and saying wow now I’m going to get 45,000 instead of 20,000 they call me and say how come he’s going to get $15,000 for only doing an hours worth of work and I try to explain to them what do you care how long it took him to get you got extra money whether he did it in five minutes or a year he got you the extra money which is what you wanted and actually should he bring should you be grateful he did it fast rather than slow but they never are one person refused to give the guy his fee so he simply substituted out of the case and filed a lien on the case and when he did that and the person tried to represent himself immediately the insurance company reduce her offer from 45,000 back down to 20 so rather than collecting 30,000 personnel collected 20,000 less than the lien that my friend had on the case which left them about 13,000 people are just not bright sometimes the funny thing is it the people who do this in their own lives whatever they do for a living they never cut anybody a break they always charge top dollar for what they do but they don’t want anybody else to make any money it’s really ridiculous. Everybody’s got to eat in this world I’m not saying let somebody be if you are quick pay somebody fair price and you’ll get a good job usually but people always want to hire the cheapest contractor to build their house and then when they have problems halfway through they wonder why
I would like you to listen to my tale! Okay Morty you listen to his tale and I'll set up the beacon! Lol!
Yes! The telescoping magnet comes in real handy when I'm working on my car and drop a nut, bolt, wrench, washer, or when a socket decides to roll anywhere out of reach etc.!
Use a low profile dry duct should be able to find them home depot or lows and 90 vent under dry to come out the side. Sometimes there is a knockout there.
I love all the comments about how to fix the furnace filter situation. But that right there is job security! 😆 They have to call him twice a year to come and change that little filter.
Nice video, Handy. Looks like an everyday average day for me. Handy on!
I've been a man for at least 25-30 years. I bought a little ratcheting screwdriver at the auto parts store way back when. It's got a flat screwdriver tip on one side and a Philips on the other. It's not Klein but it works. I've also got one of those extendo magnet thingamabobs too. Does that make me twice the man?😁
Nice job Handyman! You a real Man!
You truly are a handyman checking out the girl next door...a couple times. 😉
Yep. Enjoyed the format
I love watching your videos because you’re so positive even when things go wrong. ❤❤❤❤
Same here, and it reminds me I need to be more like that when out on jobs and things go haywire.
11:03 there you go Handy, get you a lil afternoon delight 🤣🎨🖌
God Bless U for doing the dryer repair
I liked your plan on the furnace filter.
People really call you to fix a paper towel roller? I need to get into this business lol
Keep it coming. Always great content.
Great video! Thanks for the great content Handyman!
The tinsey tool is cool
On a budget use small ratchet with a (forget size) socket to hold the bit
Tape it in or something if loose
Sometimes it will stay
I have a similar dryer setup and I put a couple of 2X4's behind it to prevent it from hitting the hose.
I buy that weatherstripping on Amazon, $20 for 40ft. I have a number of homemade barn doors, both slidding and hinged and this stuff works great so at this point I just keep it on hand. All it needs is a 1/4-3/8" deep kerf cut and you can install it anywhere.
Table saw blade width is easier to work with, but the current standard skilsaw keeg is workable, just a bit tight, matbe a better hold actually.
many people will build the door/windows headers up against the wall top plate, then standard frame above up tp the header.
that makes it easier to modify later on, for window/door changes. I just re-did mine that way and made sure no electrical was below the large picture windows. some day if I want a sliding door, I can just cut it open and install, no need to worry about headers and load.
Thanks bro appreciate you very helpful man 👍👍👍👍
Try this tool:
Gyokucho Razor saw Utility knife Tree 80
I learn about this saw from Scott Brown's channel. I keep mine on my tool vest, really comes in handy and saves me from pulling out a large saw for a small/short cut.
Hi Handyman. Much love from Richard's Painting Service Inc. Scarsdale, NY. Always great content. Love you buddy😊
I enjoy these type of days.
I have a 3 foot long claw grabber that I use to on everything from to nuts to bolts to drawstrings inside pants to cheetos behind the couch...which are not magnetic.
😂The female painting outside haha
Tin snips and a filter tray. Slot the filter into the return laying on its side like a CD into a radio. You’d just have to change the size of the filters you use to match the dimension of the duct. Some duct tape to flash around the lips of the tray and you’re done. I’ve seen it done before by buddies who specialize in HVAC firsthand.
Not enough surface area. Will increase static pressure quite a bit. Especially with a MERV 11+
For your apex ratchet, I've always used my 1/4 inch ratchet with a 1/4 inch socket. It'll do the same thing unless you have a tight space. If it's a tight space I use my 1/4 ratchet wrench.
You are doing a fine job ❤
I had my furnace installer put in a AprilAire 4" filter box in between the return and the furnace when he replaced my old furnace
Who cares, fan speed correct for added static Joe engineer?
@@billlimbert1053 having a bad day there bill? you sound mad.
I had a professional HVAC installer do this work. They offered the 4" filter - I said yes.
As with most people I relied on their expertise and experience to know if the new furnace can handle a 4" filter. Thanks for your comment Bill . hope ya have a better day
Was that Beyoncé painting? Lol
Handyman, I have the little Klein ratchet but you should check out the Wera Tool check plus. Great little kit to keep in your truck.
As far as the filter is concerned, change the return register out to one that takes a filter.
8:10 I would love to see how that is retrofit. I service 8-10 properties that putting the filter in the cold air return would be amazing.
Those cabinets are looking spiffy.
The header could be at the top plate. But it’s hard to determine how tall that ceiling is so in theory you’re correct, but it also could be framed with the header above and the small framing below the header.
You asked how to make changing the return air filter ?
Can you not modify that lower door .make a slotted door just wide of the filter size with a long piano hinge and make an easy access latch .
You might have to measure and precut one to make sure it fits .
Pop revets can be an easy fix ...
In my life I have modified some air handling units for easy service ...
Make a door for the furnace filter out of the lower panel. Magnetic closure and some hinges should be fine.
-- Doing so may violate code... if you ever modify a furnace, make sure that your modifications are compliant. Failure to do so may result in a catastrophic fire and an insurance company not covering the loss. In fact, you also may find yourself in trouble with the law. The moral of the story here is to ensure that:
A. You know what you're doing!
&
B. Your backside is covered financially and legally if worse comes to worst.

Good video
How do you clean the pergola cover? I would love for you to tape that.
I have a slot in my cold air return that is built into the return that holds the filter. There isn’t any door on it
They make a more ridgid flexible aluminum dryer vent hose that will not crush or rip. They cost a bit more than the cheap aluminum foil one's but they are a one and done...
I would measure and put a short block behind to keep the dryer from getting pushed back and tearing the vent off again.
Dryer could use a stop block behind it to prevent it from being shoved back too far into the poorly located vent.
Dip the end in the resin long as doesn't get in the hose to spigot end😊
You can install a return air vent that holds an air filter at the hallway where it starts and eliminate the air filter at the furnace. Love your work Handyman. I do handyman work part-time no remodeling yet.
I will look the next time I'm there to see how many return grills they have.
Came here to say this exact thing. Have 3 HVAC units at my house, 1 for each floor. 2nd floor has 3 returns, 1st floor has 2 and basement has 1. Each return has a filter. Changing is easy, happens monthly in the summer when we use the cheap filters, every 3 months from Nov -April when we use thicker filters (US Southeast where AC is prominent).
I love being a handyman. I only wish I would have started sooner. 4 years later and still growing but how do you manage when you’re phone is ringing off the hook? I just don’t know how to handle growth without hiring someone, which unfortunately is harder than it should be.
I hired my wife. With the time I save not talking on the phone I make more than she did at her job so she quit and does my office work now. I just show up and turn screws. 😂
Man same here I’m booked through September !!!! Almost 60 now and think need to take some chances on hiring, just not sure i can stand managing people and their bullshit.
Stay solo and just start saying 'no' more often. If you add help you'll stress out over having enough work for them, quality of their work, etc. You can afford to be more selective once you've built up your client base. Good luck!
If your phone is ringing "off the hook" your prices might be to low? Increase them
Set specific times to return calls (office work). I like to do it in the afternoon last thing for the day. Also raise your prices. If people aren't complaining then you're not charging enough.
If you have to open your furnace to change the filter, it won't turn on while you're changing it. Our furnace has twist knobs rather than screws though, so its a quick change. I consider it a feature rather than a bug.
Handyman 👨🔧 SF! 👍🇺🇸
Handyman, is that a Rolex??
It’s called kerf, or at least in my area.
They make a sheet metal u channel you can cut a slot in the return install the u channel by removing the blower assembly it will take time but worth it
You should only have one start time on the irrigation controller. All brands. One start time for normal residential
Nope
Put a filter grill in the house where the returns are they sell a filter rack that you can mount in between your return duck and the furnace there slide one in and out no problems. I’ll come do it.
'Going down.'
They make a filter rack for that unit
RE: having to dismantle furnace filters. How about replacing the screws with rare earth magnets ? Either doubled sided tape or the new screw on magnets ?
I hope they don't shove that drier back into the vent. Maybe put a stop behind it. You should have your dog traveling with you!
Obviously he can’t bring his dog into other people’s houses. So the alternative is to leave the dog in the hot truck?
Nah… leave the pooch home until fall and winter.
Put the dryer on a platform higher than the duct.
I would use a metal blade on my jigsaw, and slice about a inch off the furnace cover...just wide enough to replace the filter, use a metal filter than can be washed..it won't get sucked in.
I wouldn't change a thing. That could've have taken you longer than 5 minutes to change out and that include the tine it took you to walk to your basement. Especially, if you have already done it before and know what to do and the preserved difficulties you might encounter. 🤷♂️
I’m an un-handy man, but love watching your videos.
Should the dryer vent be replaced every year or so?
No but it should be cleaned for build up of lint especially longer run ones
Are you checking airflow through evaporator coil when you go to people houses to asses the amount of blockage? This is the #1 issue I find at least in FL
🇺🇸🤘 Heck Yeah Handy Dandy 🤘🇺🇸
15:13 welcome to biology class!
Those black garage shelves look strangely familiar🤔
Repeat customers. I haven't had a new customer in over 3 years.

That's exactly why I wouldn't believe it's so surreal to me. I mean, in most cases even if one fails with fixing things at home, what's the worst case scenario? XD
I'm pretty sure, someone in this world managed to die while changing a lightbulb or painting the wall, but I assume those chances are quite low to be even considered. Even if one have no clue how to fix things, blue electrical tape or silicone glue gun can fix it in 99.9% cases, I believe.
11:46 - screw a stop block to the floor.
Handyman 👀👀👀
How’s the new truck working out?
Truck is great. The infotainment screen has some things I don't like. I swear at it a few times a week.
I get most of my jobs like this through property management services.
Snow on the pergola? I’ve always thought you’re in SoCal, though I don’t really remember you ever saying your location.
C'mon, hes obviously in Oklahoma.
He keeps his private details private 🤫
I'm a handyman in the central valley and most people want me to do everything for cheap. I only advertise and work in the nice part of town but still people don't want to pay what I want. If I got $1,500 for all that you did, I would be doing very well. I try charging more but then I don't get work.
I would have replaced that foil dryer duct with a semi-rigid one which is the way to go now. Those foil dryer ducts get brittle over time and rip, they're just bad designs. The semi-rigid ones will last forever.
Dryer vents are a pain.
What do you do for a minimum charge for these tiny jobs. Ive been doing a 4 hour minimum, seems ok. Thoughts?
I was considering developing an after hours maintenance company. For those costly emergencies.
Don't consider.... start it
in central Indiana those weather strips are $7
