    Lyrics:
    Throw away the radio
    Suitcase that keeps you awake
Hide the telephone, the telephone, telephone in case
You realize that sometimes you're just not okay
You level off, you level off, you level off
    But it's not alright now
    You need to understand
    There's nothing strange about this
You need to know your friends
    You need to know that
    I'll be waving my hand
    Watching you drown
    Watching you scream
    Quiet or loud
    And maybe you should sleep
    And maybe you just need
A friend as clumsy as you've been
    There's no one laughing
You will be safe in here
You will be safe in here
Throw away this very old shoelace
    That tripped you again
Try and shrug it off, shrug it off, shrug it off
    It's only skin now
    You need to understand
    There's nothing fake about this
You need to let me in
    I'm watching you and...
    I'll be waving my hand
    Watching you drown
    Watching you scream
    No one's around
    And maybe you should sleep
    And maybe you just need
A friend as clumsy as you've been
    There's no one laughing
You will be safe in here
You will be safe in... Oooo
    I'll be waving my hand
    Watching you drown
    Watching you scream
    Quiet or loud
    And maybe you should sleep
    And maybe you just need
A friend as clumsy as you've been
    There's no one laughing
You will be safe in here
You will be safe in here
You will be safe in here
In here, in here, in here...

For anyone that's having a hard time: I am so sorry you are having a hard time. Please remember that you are capable of surviving whatever you're going through. Look for the positive things in life that make you happy. Do those things as much as possible. If you can't think of any positive things to do, look for inspiration from others that do. Find things to do that you are interested in. Feed the positive side of you. It's in there. It may be hard to find, and you'll probably have to go through the negative sides of you to get there. But you can do it. I promise you it's possible.

It's possible. I changed my whole life. Which I named the trauma train. I still have shitty times but I learned they don't matter. Minimize the variables that can cause problems, maximize opportunities and be near people you want to be like. If they have what you want they are worth having around. If they have nothing but problems you don't want no part of that. My life is better than ever and I'm still working on making it something I can call great. Best of luck through your hard times.

From the Lead singer Raine Maida:
"There's a connection between the song 'Clumsy' and it being the title of the album. There's a line in the song that says: 'I'll be waving my hand/watching you drown/watching you scream', it's about seeing something but not seeing it for what it really is. It's about decisions. That image of 'waving your hand/watching you drown,' is about seeing someone in the water, they're waving at you, and you're just waving back, not realizing that they're drowning. Or you think they're drowning, but they're just waving at you. It's those weird situations where you just take something at face value, but you can be so wrong. You have to look deeper and question things. I think it's something that too many people don't do these days. We're so inundated with the f--king media, and you just believe it. How many times, not just to focus on us, have we read an interview or an article where we've been completely misquoted? We're just some small band, when you think about some of the major players and you really have to question how true it all is."

My grandma died from Alzheimer's. I think the hardest thing about it when I was a child and she was in the earlier stages of the disease was trying to keep her away from mirrors. She didn't recognise the person in the mirror as herself and would try to talk to it and wanted to always introduce me to the person she was talking to in the mirror. I always had to try to keep the door to the bathroom closed when she didn't need it and tried to direct her away from the bathroom after she was done so she wouldn't get stuck talking to the mirror.

This song is about having a loved one who is addicted to something. Its at that very specific point in an addiction when its clear that a problem exists, but before people realize the extent of it. When it started, people thought it was funny, you were the life of the party, but now no one is laughing, and and at first your love ones think maybe you just need a friend, or that you just need some sleep, but ultimately they realize all they can do is stand around and watch you drown.

    Throw away the radio
    Suitcase keeps you awake
Hide the telephone, the telephone, telephone in case
You realize that some times your just not okay
You level off, you level off, you level off
    But it's not alright now
You need to understand, there's nothing strange about this
You need to know your friends
You need to know thatI'll be waving my hands
    Watching you drown
    Watching you scream
Quiet or loudAnd maybe you should sleep
And maybe you just need, a friend
    As clumsy as you've been
    There's no one laughing
You will be safe in hereThrow away this very old, shoe lace
    That tripped you again
Try to shrug it off, shrug it off, shrug it off
    But it's only skin now
    You need to understand
    There's nothing fake about this
You need to let me in
I'm watching you and I'll be waving my hands
    Watching you drown
    Watching you scream
No one's aroundI'll be waving my hands
    Watching you drown
    Watching you scream
    Quiet or loud

  • @RevenGrey
    @RevenGrey 4 года назад +71

This song always felt very personal for me, its like my depression, personified, is singing to me.
The first few lines; 'Throw away the radio
    Suitcase that keeps you awake
Hide the telephone' speaks to how I try to drown out my sorrows by listening to sad music which ultimately just makes me feel worse, my feeling of wanting to escape my life and the idea that seeing beautiful things might make me feel like life is worth living, and now more than ever with cellphones, the need to 'hide the telephone' to keep myself to spilling my emotions on people.
Being in a deep depression really feels like you are drowning, you feel tired just from existing.
The lines 'as clumsy as you've been, there's no one laughing' speaks to how I've always tried to be the entertainer, to make people around me happy and laugh, and how I've always felt that deep down they still don't like me.
'maybe you just need a friend' I've never been more happy in my life than when I have a partner. Unhealthy as it sounds to rely on someone else for your happiness I've always felt like I mattered, like I wasn't an after thought and like I had a best friend that I could do anything with and share anything with while in a relationship.
No idea why someone would bother to read my personal interpretation of this song but there it is. I had to write out what I've had in my head since first hearing this years and years ago.

Your interpretation paints a very familiar picture. When I was about 13 or 14 I think, I've always felt like I never belonged, I was often sad, I couldn't understand or relate to the happiness my classmates or even my close friends were experiencing which lead me to have a very uneventful and bleak teen years that I absolutely regret. I listened to OLP practically everyday then, but I never actually took the time to pinpoint the things in my life that I could attach per line of the song. You make me wish I did. All I remember was that I felt better singing along and really feeling the words as I sang them. On a lighter note I think I ended up with a stronger mental and emotional composition than most in my adult years. I only hope that you have come out stronger and better than most as well after going through those tough times.

Our Lady Peace will always hold a special spot within my soul as they were the first of many, many bands that I saw live. I was 15 and it was a free outdoor concert held on a local college campus. It was an annual festival called "Quadmania". The rest of the bookings were pretty terrible but the headliner was usually a good band that had past their peak. This particular show was in 2001 and it was my first time crowd surfing, among other things. I remember how much fun that day was and now being to hundreds of concerts, that one will always be special because it started my foray into going to as many shows as possible. I miss those days oh so much.

Just saw OLP and IME in Ottawa with my best friend since grade 9. We grew up to those bands. I have had OLP in my head for 4 days now!

Wasn't it an amazing performance? They didn't miss a beat. It was just like being back in time. I loved how everyone there was in their 30s, not on their phones, and totally in the moment. It was such a great experience.

My college days were not so good but man the music back then were perfect! Sadly nobody make as good as this now but thankfully I still got every great song in my 1st gen iPod. Makes me go back in time, awesome times.
