Fix a New Gas Can in 5 Minutes - Adding a Vent

  • It isn't a secret: The new style gas cans are terrible fragile contraptions that have caused many a spills and are responsible for numerous new curse words being created to help describe them. But there is hope. This is my solution to this entirely unnecessary problem.
    If you're wondering who is responsible for all of the gasoline spills and time spent waiting you have endured at the hands of these containers, you have the Children's Gasoline Burn Prevention Act to thank for this. I seriously doubt these have prevented any such tragedies (and most likely have caused some), but that's up to your legislators to decide. Trust them. They know what's best for you.

    So far so good. I’ve filled it twice and it’s great getting 13 gallons at one shot ruclips.net/user/postUgkx-vlHjazTv30m_UAq9Ht-fuPo2jBx7tTx . It pumps out by using gravity so the bottom of the tank needs to be above the vessel you're filling. Not a drop spilled filling the generator three times. Let’s see where we’re at after 20 fills.he slightly larger Panfish floats ruclips.net/user/postUgkx_rJB7cli5f1ofPVGgn80S7Yj4vqwq0gU recommend they work just fine. The smaller size lets me carry more in my tackle box, and the 3 color choices are nice for different lighting conditions, backgrounds, etc. They aren't the most durable things in the world. But, as cheap as they are, it's not heartbreaking to lose one or have to replace a worn one. The price on these fluctuates wildly, from about $9 to almost $16. So, time your buy accordingly.

    I used a vent out of the EZ Pour brand kit, the type of vent you just push in a drilled hole. So far so good.

    Not to mention the boat gas tanks for rafts and dinghys have *no* vents in them, to prevent "dangerous fumes" from venting into the atmosphere. Instead, it will increase to 5 psi and overpressure the bowl, forcing gasoline into it, spilling it all into the ocean. Previous vents just vented any overpressure. So now we need to either leave the cap off, venting more fumes, or destroy our engine's carburetor.
    Edit: Oh, your sub count just rolledover to 20k. Congrats!

      All of my boat tanks have had vents either on the tank or incorporated into the gas cap. Air needs to get in for the fuel to be able to flow.

    Thanks for the video. I just did this, but with a 1/4" drain cock (Ace Hardware, part number 47092, because they were out of the 1/8" version at my store). I had to use a 29/64" drill bit to get the hole big enough to get it in straight. (I first tried a 27/64", then a 7/8", but it kept starting to go in crooked until I went up to 29/64".) It was still so tight, I can't imagine needing a lock washer. Just finished making the modification; I'll see how it works this weekend.

    I happen to have a nutty amount of experience, not only with politics, gas cans, but physics as well. First, I applaud your approach. I actually find the new crap very dangerous, often spilling gas, and resisting the temptation to just throw it at something.
    Having that valve sticking out there is an invitation for spilled gas. In "real life" things get bumped around. Some "mating" of flat surfaces would be better than the lock washer you chose, and one of those "star". or spoked lock washers would function much better sans a flat fit. Rambling here I suppose....I only use the old stile. (35 years off grid...If the spout will pour, I'd be thinking of a way to fish a nut INSIDE the can, to get a positive, flat fit to a valve mounted where it won't be battered by normal...life. And thanks, Don

  • @theoldwizard998

    While this method does work, it's far easier and a bit cheaper to buy a 10 pack of actual gas can vents off your favorite online seller, drill a 1/2" hole, and push one in. Voila, same vent as most cans came with 10 years ago. As a bonus, it only sticks out 3-4mm instead of hanging out to snag on stuff like a tire valve or drain petcock. :)

      +mattmopar440 I tend to agree with you. There has actually been one company go out of business after being sued for their cans rupturing when they get hot enough, and opening one of these things up when fully pressurized is an easy way to get gasoline sprayed all over. I know of one person who went to the ER for that. The old style vents that leak slightly once the can is overpressurized worked great to keep things safe. love your videos, make more
    i had a question. i recently acquired some telecom batteries similar to what you made your 1000ah bank from. 5 fiamm 12umtx180ft 198ah . anyway while on a solar power forum i was told that telecom batteries such as these are only meant to be deep cycled 6 or so times before they are scrapped and that i basically paid for someones hazmat disposal fee for paying 75 dollars each for them. before i bought them they were at 13.2-13.5 volts sitting on a pallet at the recycling center so i assumed that they are in working order much like the ones you had where some were able to exceed manufacturer specifications even though used and a few years into their lifespan. anyway so is there any truth to his statement? if i keep the cycling low discharging maybe to no lower than 11.8-12.2v can i expect a reasonable life from these batteries? thanks to anyone who might respond

    Hey knurlgnar, what about self venting spouts like the one pictured here www.amazon.com/RotopaX-RX-SP-VENT-Self-Venting-Spout-Kit/dp/B004ETRWLS? We get them standard with our gas cans here in Canada. They actually work pretty good for lawnmowers and snowblowers, although they aren't as fast as the tradional ones for filling a car or truck tank. As for your fix - I've installed a faucet in an HDPE barrel a few years ago and it barely lasted a year before it came lose - had to add a coupling on the other side to secure it. That material isn't very tough at all.

    Saves spills in storage that burn people to death, freethinker. Show us how you tie knots in seatbelts. More from the ridged, inflexible, and entrenched in the good old Archie Bunker days.... 7:39 😢

    • @knurlgnar24
      @knurlgnar24  Год назад

      I don't think you understand the history, politics, and unintended consequences of these government mandated containers. They do not prevent burn injuries nor do they have anything to do with seatbelts - not sure why you threw that logical fallacy (strawman) in there but it's clear evidence of someone who knows they have no valid argument. These containers often rupture in storage due to the high pressures, force high pressure streams of gasoline out of the spout when opened, regularly spill when in normal use, and even a 4 year old child can figure out how to open the spout. All they do is create hazards and frustrate people. Those who are ergonomic engineers know that the easiest way to make people injure themselves is to design something that frustrates the user. Congrats. Mission accomplished. Everyone who has ever actually used one of these has suffered frustration. It is YOUR thinking that is rigid and inflexible. Have you ever considered that not everything you're told has scientific, data based, statistical evidence to support it? That there is a social agenda behind nearly every law often not based in truth? Nope. I can tell that you have never even considered it.

    • @knurlgnar24
      @knurlgnar24  3 года назад

      They leak. And even if you manage somehow make it not seep air/gasoline they pop open under pressure.

  • @karguy1720
    @karguy1720 3 года назад

    Air and gasoline will leak from that vent. Deleting the lock washer and using suitable sealant will prevent leaking, though the threaded attachment will still be of questionable strength.

    • @knurlgnar24
      @knurlgnar24  3 года назад

      I've had trouble on a couple of cans with the threads eventually leaking a little. I agree with using a solvent resistant gasket sealant. The threaded connection is quite strong as long as you use a gasoline can that has reasonable thickness.

    i use a non vented one and when it bulges i just open the cap a bit to release the pressure or just keep it in a cool area well thats what i do

    • @knurlgnar24
      @knurlgnar24  4 года назад

      That works, but it still pours slowly and easily spills which is the primary problem that needs addressing.

    Only crap i see is the spout... Theres some for sale in hardwarestores and they have build in venting tube...an even some are sold with that spout as standards

    • @knurlgnar24
      @knurlgnar24  2 года назад +1

      No gas cans can be legally sold with the spout you speak of. Any that are sold with that spout are not rated for gasoline and I don't want to put gas in a jug designed for water - if it splits that's a big problem. The liability repercussions mean that gasoline containers are built FAR better than 'race jugs' and the like. The kits they sell everywhere in stores come with a plastic cap that leaks and easily pops open under pressure. Useless and/or hazardous. I have seen some very nice add-on vent products for sale in various places on the internet which is a more refined version of what I show here. I haven't tried them but some of them look fairly legit.

    When it’s cold, these cans can’t be used by weak and/or arthritic hands.
    So, I just don’t give a flying turd.
    I take the whole top of the can off, and just pour it into the tank.
    Sure, I spill some. Maybe even a lot.
    And I care about the environment.
    But I hate governmental stupidity even more.

    • @knurlgnar24
      @knurlgnar24  2 года назад

      Removing the entire spout and pouring into a funnel is a time tested and historically common approach. The problem I have with that is many of my vehicles and small equipment cannot accept any reasonable funnel and make this work properly so a spout is more practical for me. If not for you then go for it! Spillage isn't the primary reason these stupid government mandated spouts exist anyway, it is child burns they are trying to prevent. How about not letting your kids play with your gas cans? Nah, makes too much sense.
