Gas Can Modifications. Adding a Vent, and Making the Spout Easier to Use.

  • I use gas cans a lot, for lawn and garden equipment as well as refilling my cars. The new cans are made to be "safer" and more environmentally friendly. They fail on both counts. When I use the new cans, I end up spilling more gas than I ever did with the old cans. I added some modifications to make the cans a little easier to use, without compromising safety or environmentally friendliness.

You can go to rural king and purchase the kit with the air intake plus a real free flowing spout. I did this with all my gas cans.

The seam you see is from the mold in which the can was formed (rotomolded). It isn’t where two halves were joined. The only problem you might have drilling on the seam is it’s not perfectly flat so could potentially create a leak.

    Learn two things from you.
    1) Get rid of the spring
    2) Add Vent
    Thanks.

Another guy I watched used a half inch bit cause the one recommended was too tight. Warming was a good idea.

How do you take apart the yellow and the green style spout? That's why I came to this video and I cannot find anything on taking them apart.

I have not figured that out yet. they seem to be poor quality, and get jammed often, but I haven't found a way to take them off that doesn't seem like I am breaking it.

I totally ignore those stupid nozzles and fume screen and use a battery powered transfer pump.
    No heavylifting either

Yes, a few videos after this one, I put up a video where I test a few different siphon pumps. That is what I use now, as well.

my OCD kicked in when you didn't rinse out the can of shavings after the drilling. I would put a lil gas in, swish it all around and pour it out (in my neighbour's yard when they aren't home).
I'd like to know how to remove that godam "flame arrestor" that's inside the can under the opening. that thing makes me nuts at the petrol station when filling it.
These nanny-state gas cans are insufferable.

Why didn’t you use the flat spot on the handle that is intended for the placement of a vent? Its position is perfect, high on the can and it is completely flat. I really don’t understand why you used another location. Also, for about $10 on sale, which they run frequently, Harbor Freight sells a 29-piece drill bit set that includes a 31/64th bit and a 15/32nds bit as well as 26 other sizes plus a sturdy case. These bits are not adequate for drilling metals but work just fine on wood and plastic, Check it out. Finally, the easiest way to dispense gas from one of these 5 gallon containers when filled to capacity, is to buy a cheap siphon pump (on sale for less than $5 on eBay) set the gas container on top of a trash can (if you want to dispense gas into a car) and siphon most of the gas out. Then, when the container is lighter, you can more easily dispense the remaining gas in the container using the modified spout. Good luck!😊

Honestly, I have 8 gas cans and that is the only one that has that flat spot on the side of the handle. I have 1 that is from the same company and identical except for the dent in the handle. I didn't notice it. Thanks for pointing it out so that others who read the comments will see it. As for the drill bits, I have soooooo many drill bits (but not the one I needed) I really don't want another set. Just wanted the one I needed. The siphon is a good idea. I may get a couple different ones to try out and make a video comparing them. Thanks.

Because your hand needs to hold can on the handle which would be uncomfortable

Another example of fixing something that isn't broken. Why didn't they just leave gas canisters alone?

i have that Mid West gas can and i can tell you it's horrible..just try and put 4 gallons of gas in that thing
then depress the little button and keep it depressed while trying to hold it steady with one hand as your
pouring gas into your lawn mower or snow blower..sounds easy, NOPE,it takes quite a bit of force to keep
that spring depressed, gas goes all over the place..mine also has a plastic filter inside the can which makes
gas spray out when filling it up..horrible design!

You need three people to operate these idiotic new spouts. It is much simpler to get a funnel that will stay in place and remove the spout and pour into the funnel.

Yes, these new gas cans are HORRIBLE. The theory is that this prevents fumes, but you ALWAYS spill a lot of gas with the funk press + valve stems.
