  • In this video I show you how to fix a new gas can by making some modifications. Gas cans sure aren't made like they used to be. In some ways they are more dangerous and if nothing else, a major pain to deal with.

I am a fuel systems engineer for OEM. EPA can be overzealous…This gas can was very difficult to operate especially after breaking my wrist. I just took over-engineered spring out, and use this container easier. Thank you for the suggestion

Many thanks, Adam! This type of instructional is where youtube is a gold mine. I have bought three or four of the newer style cans that have been nothing but frustrating from attempting to fill at the pump, to pouring the contents into a gas tank. I finally got the vent modification as you recommend. I am sure that is the secret to having a properly functioning can! Thank you for saving much time and frustration! Blessings back to you!

Terrific!! You just saved me $15 as I was about to buy a new regular spout for my Midwest Can which has a similar safety spout. I don't at all mind the idea of having the spout being able to seal off completely to avoid evaporation and to minimize that during pouring, but I couldn't use it to fill my small Stihl weed trimmer and blower without spilling gas every time. Removing the spring solved the problem and still lets me click it closed when I'm done. I did also reinstall the O-ring which I think improves the seal without adversely impacting the ability to control the open/closed state. I might consider doing the "stretched string / cut" trick to let it self-close while making it much easier to hold open, but we'll see how it goes without the spring. Great video.

When these 'New & Improved' EPA-tampered fuel cans first came out I was much younger and didn't have arthritic hands. Now I do...and I cuss these cans on a regular basis. Now, after putting this into practice, I'll be able to talk nicely to the cans once again. I live in an area of the US where there can be 100-150 miles between fuelling stations. I carry fuel and maybe 6-8X a year have to help a stranded car out. This will be MUCH easier and less spillage while trying to hold up a 5-gal can AND keep the spring open. Thanks!

Really well explained and put together. I have just ordered 2 scepter 20l tanks ,that will go on the back of my jet ski. They have some other yellow nozzle, the more flexible type. These cans say self ventilation, which is from the nozzle. I may buy this type of nozzle instead, well see. My question is, so these cans are not venting with these nozzles closed, so how will it be for these cans out in the sun.if they have no other vent ???

I have had one of these gas cans for the longest time and I never couldn’t figure out why I couldn’t get gas out other than just a drop here or there. I never knew I had to push the button in. Had to take my mom gas last night and couldn’t get but just a tiny bit in and was enough to get her to gas station so today I decided to look up how to modify the spout. I found your video extremely helpful with not only how to modify the spout but to also push that button in. I feel so silly now. Another thing that I don’t like about this can is that the fumes build up and my can starts to swell so I always just left the cap unscrewed a bit. Now problem solved

When it’s cold, these cans can’t be used by weak and/or arthritic hands.
So, I just don’t give a flying turd.
I take the whole top of the can off, and just pour it into the tank.
Sure, I spill some. Maybe even a lot.

Did not modify my spring tension, YET. My objection to this infernal design was whenever you pull spout out of the tank you're filling, because I don't have three hands, I'd have to press the safety latch every single time in order to get more gas from my can. I took a utility knife and whittled off the cam or wedge part of the black safety plunger piece, located on the left side. Exactly at 3:13 in the video, that wedge part is visible on the side pointing toward the watch band, and adjacent to it. Again at exactly 5:44, wedge part is next to left thumb. WHAT that little wedge does, is soon as you depress the black safety part down into the square barrel, you hear a click, so that when you allow the black part to slide back out then it is latched / locked all over again. With the wedge whittled away, you are able to "press to unlock" the black button down, AND, it will stay UNLOCKED no matter how many times you compress & release the spring tension, even after the cows come home. Just overcome the spring tension, press the black safety plunger as many times as it takes to top your tank off. Now IF you want it locked again, all you have to do is manually press the safety lock, to the right, (which is to say will be to the left as you are looking at spout from the underside) you'll hear the click and now is LOCKED. You're welcome: I'll take my bow now.

You can also rip off the safety unlock lever entirely; that is, the black piece you have to depress in this video to then move the plunger. I found that far more annoying than the spring given that all my filler necks are rigid and depressed so I can rest the spout inside them. Give it a try.

Yes the new cans are a pain in the butt

The government did not take into effect the people that have arthritis. Its almost impossible for me to get the cap off to fill the can, and then worse to push the spring loaded nozzel.

I use a battery power transfer pump.
The anti splash crap piece of plastic in the neck has to go!
Lifting the gallon cans was too much effort.
I can leave the can on the ground now!

These new spouts have spilled more gas than they have saved.

Whoever designed the clicky clack safety thing on the cap has obviously never tried to fill a gas can below zero with their bare hands.

the worst part is the white filter when filling the can. backsplashing gas everywhere. didn't address that.

Can easily be cut out. I actually don’t have any gas cans with them though as I purposely try to avoid them.

I thought it was because the foreigners were getting a mower very hot and pouring gas on it and blowing themselves up even though it says on top do not refill hot

Gas cans are way over-engineered and can waste more gas than the old simple designs.
I have 3 five-gallon cans, each with a different nozzle operation.
One has a push-in knob and a pull lever to open the valve. The step to rest the can against the tank is too small and always slides off, plus damages my mower tank lip. There's no positive bottom grip to tilt the can while trying to hold open the nozzle with the palm and fingers. It often slips and spills gas. Also, it stops dispensing after a few seconds as the can develops a vacuum! 😡. There's even a filter screen which causes splash-back at the gas station, and more spilled gas. Try using that with a no-fuel-cap vehicle!!
My other older tank has a plain nozzle with a snap-on cap and I added the yellow bleed port to the handle. It dispenses like beast, though I have to be careful not to overfill the tank. It also leaks a little fuel despite the caulk.
Great video for those who need help with their ridiculous gas cans, regulated by people who never have to use one!

Love the idea but you didn't mention cleaning out the plastic shavings from the inside of the can after drilling. You don't want them in the motor later.

So far so good. I’ve filled it twice and it’s great getting 13 gallons at one shot ruclips.net/user/postUgkx-vlHjazTv30m_UAq9Ht-fuPo2jBx7tTx . It pumps out by using gravity so the bottom of the tank needs to be above the vessel you're filling. Not a drop spilled filling the generator three times. Let’s see where we’re at after 20 fills.
