  • The Profoto A2 does what it is supposed to do…. And the color consistent output is solid. So what is my biggest issue with it? Recycle times on a 50% or less battery takes some getting use to. If you are in the Profoto system with A1s, B10s, etc… you will be happy with this little strobe. If you are primarily a studio shooter using their packs or D1, D2s etc…. You will need to learn to slow down and have a little patience.

On the small shoot, I did using the a2 and a1. I positioned the A1 to the right and the a2 to the left. The subjects I wanted to photograph were unevenly lit, which really surprised me watching your video, confirms what I experienced during that shoot.
Irregardless of the zoom in the A1 the A1 always was brighter and put out more light than the a2.
In my experience, the a2 had a brilliant recycling time.

Thank you thank you thank you! First honest review I’ve seen. As a working professional, I couldn’t grasp how all these other professionals felt that this was enough power for all types of shoots.

    • @kaskoPhoto
      @kaskoPhoto  Год назад

I think power = versatile. And for studio commercial shoots there is no substitute. But for casual shooters or social media shooters… I think a speedlight and remote may be just fine.

@@kaskoPhoto for sure. I shoot on-location almost 90% of the time, and feel my B10 sometimes is coming up short, which is why I ended up with a B10 Plus after the fact. The A2 I feel makes sense if you are shooting on a cloudy day or exclusively working with shadows outdoors and small indoor spaces (like on a wedding day while the bridal party is getting ready). But if I were on a client shoot on location - this would be the last light I'd pack imho.

Thanks for sharing your perspective on the A2. I have been shooting with Profoto strobes for several years, beginning with the original B1. I’ve been thinking about the A2 to add to a couple A10s and supplement when using the B10/B10+ series. But the more I see it in use, the less interested I become. I own the Angler too, and did not know the A2 won’t fit on it. That means, if I want to use the A2 in a softbox, I would have to buy the Clic Octa as well. Put all of this in the context of what I see as declining service quality from Profoto USA and really high repair costs, I honestly have to rethink what I purchase.

    • @kaskoPhoto

I agree. Deep pockets needed after the warranty period. And the A10s are a better option.

We’ve standardized our studio on Profoto a few years ago. No regrets. I love the quality and consistency of the lights. When you set a color temp and output across various flashes, you can be sure of it. We have no complaints about the pro support in Switzerland, but this could vary per country depending who’s the distributor. However, if I wasn’t making a living with photography, I’d opt for less expensive solutions like e.g. Elinchrome or perhaps Godox. It’s a bit more fiddly and perhaps less robust (esp. Godox), but it’s a lot less money…

Thank you for sharing your experience. Have you tried the Angler FB-CA adapter (by BH)? The fit doesn’t seem as secure as with A1/AD100. I think Profoto shot them selves in the foot trying to make A2 incompatible with existing mounts. The click octa has been released just few months back and is incompatible with the A2. Sorry but I wouldn’t feel as safe as with the AD100 I’m using. To those are incompatible products.
By the way the only reason I’m interested in the Profoto system is the little connect (non pro). Other systems don’t have a similar device.
Do you have any Canon camera? Does the “connect” bring the in camera menu with multiple groups and settings like Godox?

Hi I waiting for my new octa, bought the A2 yesterday. You remember the softbouncer to the A1? Some photographer dropped it and said that the magnets was to weak. The truth was that you have to twist it a tiny, tiny bit to hear the right click. Takes a millisecond to do. Could it be the same thing with the new octa? After softbounce Profoto did the magnets stronger in C1 (to strong in my opinion) to meet the complaints. Your thoughts?

Another great review… thanks👍 I’m about to invest in Profoto. I was leaning to the B10 but it seems that replacing the flash tube is a difficult procedure. Do you know if that is the same for the A2. And… the A1, that is now the A10?

Wow… that’s a great question. I do love the form factor of the A2 and the mounting bracket allows closer center placement with an umbrella - this is why I went with it. And the A2 does seem to pack better in my bag. Hope this helps.

I just did a three day corporate Headshot Shoot where used the A2 as the background light in a four light set up … The A2 was set to 7. Three bars down on the power scale at the end of the day and probably shot over 2000 photos in the course of the day, and never noticed a photo without the background firing. Some of the shots were relatively high speed but yeah it’s not continuous without pause. But it held up great in that scenario. And that is no comment on your results just sharing my results from a bulk massive corporate headshot shoot.

@@whiterock1865 Thank you for sharing your results. In my testing I have been happy with my results as well. On low power such as like setting 4 I can use High+ on canon R5. No worries. Not that is without a soft box and 3 feet away used as a supplemental light for natural light. Doubt my mieage would be as good on full power, but for that I use my D2 where I have access to AC power.

I get it and I use Apple and Profoto products, but they are not perfect and they are not always the best products on the market.
