The problem it's NOT the oil pump or cheap oil, it's the quality of the metal (to soft) they used make the balance shaft, well documented everywhere. Great video, tks.

Very grateful for the informative video. Allowed me to rule out the infamous camshaft sprocket balancer issue. Wasn't certain if my ML350 was one of the ones affected, but after oil change with no evidence of metal shavings or pieces and then successfully performing the alignment procedure you provided, I was able to get my issue resolved by just replacing the 2 - bank 1 sensors. MB actually recommends using 0w40 for the M273&272 motors. High mileage versions might benefit from the jump to 5 from 0 weight but only if they eat oil, otherwise stick with the 0w. That's what I've been using on my 135k miles M273 for the past 4 years and it's perfect.

I have my P0016/P0017 m272 engine swaped, which costs me $3K. Lucky that the problem showed up at 180K mi or 15 years later after i bought the car. I used engineer oil additive to prolong the wear and tear, which seems to work for me. After some premature wear and tear, the Bank #1 CAM timing is advanced and resulted in running hotter. I had codes on my m272 engine that indicated that I had a balance shaft issue like he is describing. I pulled the cam sensors and checked to see the small circle stamps through the hole and noticed on bank 2 my cam adjuster was clicking and spitting oil from the front and on bank 1 exhaust camshast timing mark was way off. Hi sir, I have a 06 CLK350 with 118k miles and I'm getting P0016/17 as well as p0021 codes. I also had misfire codes on the entire passenger side bank however the car had no misfires. I went ahead and replaced the spark plugs all around regardless and I'm still getting the misfire codes even though the car has little to no vibration and feels factory new. I don't think it is the timing shaft or Ballance shaft and I've just had the intake manifold replaced 8k miles ago and I've done everything I can to try and figure out my problem. I've disconnected the battery to reset the codes but they all still popped up when I reconnected it. The car is not sluggish or shaky at all and is still very peppy and I'm only getting a solid Check engine light. Do you have any recommendations as to what I should do? I'm truly stumped. Any response would be greatly appreciated.

The cause is a gear on the balance shaft inside the motor made of inferior material that wears down after a short amount of time and causes the camshaft to lose it's alignment. Oil grade is for lubrication of the metal parts inside of the engine and slight cooling, only! But the video is correct to a certain degree.

I have this problem but for the driver side of the car. I was wondering if the test to see if the cams are in the correct position is the same. putting the crank shaft at 305° then checking if the circles on the cams are aligned with the holes? or if the crank shaft position needs to be placed at a different degree to check for the driver side cams? thank you so much this video is amazingly helpful!!!!

growing for life 305 will align all cam sensors at the middle but since the valve are always pushing the cams away from each other you will be able to see only one side off at the time...

I think it's not an oil problem but a real problem of the balance shaft on some Mercedes.
    So i ask
    1) Can you change the balance shaft without keep out the engine from the car.
    2) Can you change only the pignon at the beginning of the balance shaft by
reengenering and clever method without touch anything else.
    3) Can i dismounted the back of the engine ( does we have place between the firewall and the engine
if we keep out the Automatic BV )
It's seem to me a very challenging mechanic problem because i am interesting in buying a CLK350
with that problem or similarly but i find that 5000 euros or more for changing the shaft is not normal.
I don't want to try to repair a car without be sure i will succeed if i am not a Mercedes technician.
Thanks a lot for your video and explanations

Hi. My check engine light is on in my 2010 Mercedes GLK 350 4MATIC. I ran the test codes and comes back P0017. The car drives fine, other than little rough idle on a colder day. Not super rough. I erased the codes, had the oil changed and still comes back on after a few miles. Do you think I should replace the sensor or first do this test? I just need it to pass emissions here in ATL.
    Thanks

Left side was one of it exactly on the middle the one on the left hole was lets say 2mm on the side but not really much. I got today engine light on. Deleted it after drive stop and start again it came back. I changed the cam sensors from left to the right. Right now did not show up the engine light. What i supposed to do? I just bought it today. You think it would be probably the cam sensors?engine runs perfect no shaking no power lose, very smooth. What should I do?
Codes was same p0017 and p0016

You mention cranking to 305deg, then it sounds like you rotated 180deg, so are you aligning the top alignment mark to 305deg or 125deg? Thanks for the video, very helpful!

    • @AandRMotorsports
      @AandRMotorsports 5 лет назад +3

He was 180* out on the camshafts, so he rotated the crankshaft 360* to bring the camshafts to the correct location... Camshafts turn half of crankshaft speed, so it takes 720* of crank rotation to get 360* of camshaft rotation.

I am going to replace coils, plugs and wires first to solve the misfire issue, but do you have any other thoughts? How necessary is the repair if the circles do not line up as you have shown in the video? Thank you!

Do you think it's impossible to change the back counter weight when you keep out the BV and the flywheel
If it' s possible many people who have the problem of the balance shaft will win a lot of money by following
a precise tutoriel of how doing that job.
Moreover i am thinking how can the sprocket be used like that ??? what is the root cause if you have any idea with explanations !!!
I think of the tensioner ???

Hi even when you change the cam shaft sensor the connecter where it clicks on have to be replaced or clean before clicking it back on the sensor.the oil in the wire will run all the way up the harness and ruin the computer.

Hi MBT, what would the symptoms be with someone who has this issue and ultimately needs a new balancer? I have a 2006 ML350...and at this point the cost of such a job outweighs the desire to put that kind of $$$ into the vehicle since it's Kelly Blue Book is probably $2000
We have a series of issues from occasional hesitations or stuttering..but most of our issues seem electrical in nature especially if it rains out (faulty ground, fuse, etc..not sure).

scene one cam is on time and one cam is not on time would that not be that the cam advance is stuck on one cam. if the cam on the left of the engine was off on both then the balance shaft teeth are gone because the chain would have more slack? the teeth where not hardened properly during manufacturing on the balance shaft. thanks for the video like it a lot.

Awesome video. I know you probably get a lot of questions regarding this video and know you are probably a busy guy. I thought I would at least try and ask you what you might think about my situation. I think I may have a similar issue on my 2008 C300 but the error codes I am getting are p0060 and p0064 my check engine light is no off and the car runs just fine. I took the car to my local shop and they told me that they saw that a camshaft sensors was leaking oil. They then told me that the standard practice for this issue is to replace all 4. My question would be is this acceptable? should I just clean the sensor off, should I just replace the sensor that was leaking oil or should I replace all 4? Thank you

I have a 2006 E350 with 153,000 miles. An original balancing shaft would not last 150,000 miles correct? Car drives and idles great. Do you believe the camshaft adjuster magnets could be the issue? I want to try the Titan oil because after I did an oil change one time the light went away (battery was not disconnected at all but the codes came back.) Besides the balancing shaft what else could be the issue?
