    OK, as a shop that does this job properly quite often I can assure you that that is a temporary, short-lived, maybe fix. It will only work if the chain is stretched enough by one tooth. Also the chain will keep stretching to the point it breaks. However if you were a backyard guy doing it for yourself you could probably buy a year out of that fix. Unfortunately I have to answer to people. So it’s better to charge the $6000 and fix it right once. But like I said. This fixes fine if you’re doing it yourself as a hobby with a customer is aware it’s going to be temporary.

      Hello, do you still see any M272 engines that are past the affected range (have the improved balance shaft) come into the shop with P0016 and P0017 codes? If so, are they usually due to stretched chains? Thanks

      @@mascho22 , @stevepitbull: I have the same exact question. My car is far out of the affected zone; it has no symptom whatsoever. I think it could be a variety of reasons other than timing chain (such as cam phaser, cam plunger, oil sludge, etc)? Any thought or cure for your problem yet, Michael?

    • @mascho22
      @mascho22 2 года назад

      @@petediegan2794 Yeah sadly the cure was to replace the cylinder head and cams. Took off valve cover to find Intake cam was broken in half due to oil starvation near the front half due to excess sludge blocking crucial passageways. The rest of the engine survived fortunately so got it running good finally after a lengthy process

    Hello, thanks for a great video. However, I am ready to rip my hair out as I have been attempting this repair for a few weeks straight. Once I put everything back together and view it through the front cover @ 305 degrees (55 degrees past top dead center), I am unable to get the passenger side (right side) to line up perfectly. The Left side continues to be perfectly aligned but the right side has either been under rotated or over rotated as I have tried this several times over. It seems impossible to get the timing to align perfectly on the right side. Also, when I put everything back together and start up the engine, I am able to clear the codes but they come back every other time I start the engine. (The different P0016 and P0017 codes). Again, while I can get them to clear, they just come back every other restart. This has me thinking that its because I cannot get the engine precisely timed so like I said, I tear everything back down again and try one more chain link further on the Intake cam and the engine is over rotated at the 305, or 1 more chain link less on the intake cam and the engine is under rotated at the 305 mark...... of course I view this once everything is put back together so it is absolutely maddening as it is way too much work to redo this each and every time and keep getting these same result..... too much or not enough. Do you have any advice here? Please help ASAP!!!!

    • @hafidautorepair2793
      @hafidautorepair2793  4 года назад

      If the gear is off alignment too much that mean the middle balancer shaft is worn out or the guides are worn too .
      So what you have to do now is to open valve cover make a visual inspection to the guids if one of them broken and check if the teeth of the balancer is damage . after check the crank with 40° and see both cam suppose to be aligned with the surface of the head

    • @jakesalisbury4325
      @jakesalisbury4325 4 года назад +1

      @@hafidautorepair2793 I appreciate the response. I do in fact have the valve cover removed as I have done each time. I also attempt to line up the markings on the cam gear @ 40 degrees each time. I have only been able to remove the outer most guide rail for inspection and to reposition chain. Unfortunately, the inner guide rail had threads broken off inside of it while attempting to pull it during my initial repair effort. Therefor I have been unable to inspect this rail or the teeth of the balance shaft which would be viewable upon its removal. Now I suppose that I am faced with putting the engine back together and letting it be or trying other methods of rail pin removal. The engine seemed to run fine when I last put it back together but again, the light just comes back on. Any advice?

    Hello. I have a W221 S550 (M273) and the check light is on. Logs P0016 and P0017 errors on ignition and they stay for a long time. Sometimes the check light goes out by itself and comes back on after a while. With live data, there are no errors and all indicators are normal. I decided to manually check the shaft marks as in your video, except on the M273 the shaft should be at 305 degrees. All 4 marks are in the center of the holes. That is, the circuit is in good condition. I have absolutely no problems with the car. The engine works great. Is it possible that the sensors have screwed up and are indemnifying for these errors?

    Hi, thank you for posting this video as it looks like I might have to do this.
    I wonder if I could get your opinion on this, my car just started to start up slower than usual and whilst driving it felt like it would cut out but then it would come straight back on,
    I plugged it into a diagnostic machine and there are a lot of codes but the ones I want to know about are these:
    p0335 and p0336 which are the cam and crankshaft sensors
    I also have the dreaded p0016 and P0017.
    My question is do you think that the faulty cam and crankshaft sensors P0336 and P0335 could be the reason I also have the p0016 or P0017 error codes?
    Or do you think that it’s something else?
    Do you think if I replace the cam and crankshaft sensors that all the codes will go away or will it only erase the p0335 and p0336 codes?
    Any help would be much appreciated,

    HALLO! I have a Mercedes e280 2006 gasoline and the p2090 y49 / 7 (right camshaft exhaust solenoid ) diagnostics, the engine light is on.
    When the car is cold and ignites the engine, heavy sound is heard for a few seconds and then gains quietness. I pass the solenoid sensor and the motor chain tensioner and as a result the cold flashing noise is easier, diagnosis with p 2090 displays component y49 / 7( right camshaft exhaust solenoid ) has short circuit to grund,And the engine light returns.
    With your experience you can tell me why this is happening and what can I do.

  • @albertsavage1984
    @albertsavage1984 2 года назад

    You are not supposed to rotate the engine while the valve cover is off for the M272 and M273 engines. The cover serves as bearing caps for the camshafts, which is why there is a specific order and torque sequence for this cover. If you do this, you risk damaging your camshafts and your engine not running properly. The engine should be placed in 40dg past tdc prior to removing the cover, and it should not be rotated after it is removed until you have properly reattached the cover.
    This will ruin people's engines if they do what you propose.

    • @albertsavage1984
      @albertsavage1984 Год назад

      @@carsusa1 the chain can be done in the car, but is much easier to do out. The bigger issue is that those years 2006-2008 (up to a specific engine#) M272 timing codes typically come from a worn balance shaft, which really requires the engine to be out. The balance shaft was made of a lower grade material than later engines, and is typically worn. There are lots of videos of that problem along with the fix, which is quite extensive.

    It's look like this mechanic never did this work.Hi is right, you don't need to replace camshaft adjusters. Never broke. The main problem inside engine - BALANCE SHAFT. Mercedes tries to save money all the time and don't care about our pocket. In 2006 and 2007 years they put very bad quality balance shaft. As result chain destroys balance shaft. Right side camshafts late by wrong chain position on balance shaft. Computer can't adjust this problem and turns "check engine ON ". For proper repair engine or transmission must be taking out. Balance shaft bolt located in the back of engine. Engine generation M272. Check my post with explanation and pictures.

    YOU ARE COMPOUNDING THE PROBLEM WITH BUSH FIXES. your timing chain has stretched and you jumped right over that, and said all that i need to do is advance the Right side of the engine on the chain and all will be well, WELL NOT SO MUCH!!. you are introducing more length to the none-torsion side of the timing chain. This further extends the travel of the timing chain tensioner and you may be close to the extension limit. You have also with this concoction thrown the engine out of balance since you have disturbed the relationship of the engine moving mass compared to the effect of the counter-balancer. This action will cause more BACKLASH on a chain that is already compromised and cause further lengthening of the chain. I almost hate to say it but i do not believe in doing non approved fixes. Look at all work you have done to NOT FIX THE PROBLEM. With the correct special tools you can change the timing belt without taking apart the whole front timing chain cover.

    • @petediegan2794
      @petediegan2794 2 года назад

      @Tom A: you might be right, Tom. But at the same time, these M272 are mostly ten years old, more than 100K miles. MB doesn't have good and clear answers on these issues (I took mine to a dealership and their answers were worthless). Thus, a balance shaft for $9000 doesn't make any sense. A quick fix like this, if it could go another 30/50K miles is well worth it, don't you think?

    • @YouTube.TOM.A
      @YouTube.TOM.A 2 года назад

      @@petediegan2794 I don't envy your problem, Mercedes has the M272 engine with a history of chewing up the counterbalance sprocket. Your first problem is scope and spatial relationship. The timing chain when stretched affects the spatial relationship between the crank and cam. the computer notices this effect using position sensors. Even if you can trick the sync plates [in the camshaft] by advancing them to prevent the computer notification, you still have the problem that the valve action is not conforming to planned positioning which makes this engine crap even if it is still running. The other issue is that some of these engines [m272] cross 100,000 miles with no metal in the oil pan, and no pieces flying around in the oil. The [VIN] next to yours may be OK while you suffer all those repairs. my only recommendation is to buy a m272 engine from a crashed vehicle and if the engine is not fragmented with about 50.000 plus miles; with proper oil changes you can have a good, long lasting, replacement engine. It may surprise you how many M272 engines that are available for sale with 50 plus thousand miles in the salvage warehouses.
