    Thanks for the amateur musician bit! I needed to hear that. When I was younger I wanted to become a flutist, but at the time even though I liked it, my parents used to tell me "oh musicians have to practice 12 hours a day and they don't do anything else". I was a lazy teenager so I gave up before even trying and even stopped playing for years. I'm now 27 and study for fun because I really love the flute. Kinda regret being that way when I was younger but there's no use regretting it now. Sometimes I still need to hear that it's ok to enjoy it even if it's not professionally. Thank you!

      chizLemons yes, music is for everyone. Basically the world of classical music grew up from a smaller group of people who had their "normal" jobs and just were just making music for fun with friends :) nice you found your own way!

    A strategy that helps me a lot when performing is to think that it's not about me and how I do, but about the music. I try to think about how beautiful the music is and how I want to share that with the audience. When it works I feel much freer and natural on stage.

    • @oliviapereira364
      @oliviapereira364 4 года назад

      When I practice performance I can most of the time focus on the Music and not on the playing... But I can't do that when I'm actually performing... I need more structure because of axiety and maybe start the first measure focusing on the Music and quickly chicken out to concentrate on playing... Any tips?

      katieflute hey, one of my ex teachers can circular breathing, and it was absolutly useless. It was good only for showing off in front of students. When he used it playing music, it did only bad effect. Natural breathing helps see music from inside, devide phrases and gives it natural character. You can still hear circular breathing, and it is ugly

      @@andrey_1234 It's useful for pieces like 'The Great Train Race' but imo it's not that necessary in classical music (But maybe it's useful in Bach's allemande).

    Honestly, I feel like being a musician (or a ballerina, or anything, really) is a personality type. You know whether you are a musician or not. It doesn't matter if you play everyday or haven't played for ten years. Personally I'm a musician (not a professional, but I get really really- really- angry when someone who has never ever heard me play calls it a hobby, just because that's not how I make my living). Also, people often forget it is possible to have more than one serious career, as if that would automatically make one of them (or both) less valid. I have a very dear friend who is a polymath. She is both a classical pianist and a microbiologist and is recognized by her peers on both fields. But she says it is very difficult for people to understand that and not have prejudice against her as if she is dedicating "less than she should" to any of the fields. I don't know how much she dedicates in hours of playing and researching, but she is na amazing musician and sounds just as good as concert pianists and has many published articles as a Professor, so I guess she is doing just fine. We need to stop trying to classify people in little drawers as if some things are just not possible. Let them be. She almost dropped being a pianist because... guess: she thought it would not be possible to do it in a high level along with anything else and started having very bad performance anxiety. It's ok to dedicate to more than one field, as long as you are serious about it. It's also ok just to have some hobbies (if you're not "serious" about it). Either way you are fine, what is wrong is denying artistry in your life just because society says you can't have it.

    Hi Katie, I have a question? I’m an adult amateur who is passionate about flute. Is it possible for an amateur flutist to have the skills of a professional without gone to college or a conservatory? This is my goal.

    • @katieflute
      @katieflute  4 года назад

      Hi Chris! I think if you are passionate and have a great teacher working with you, it is possible to improve greatly. College/conservatory really isn't technically necessary to be a professional musician (unlike other career paths like a doctor, professor, etc.). The most important thing is having a good teacher and the willingness to work hard.
