Sometimes I scratch my head when I see some of the guitar players out there that have their own models and/or endorsements. Guthrie, on the other hand, deserves it all... what an amazing player.
I just realized why I watch Guthrie Govan's vids: his personality is just as appealing as his playing. He's got sprezzatura. From wiki: "Sprezzatura is an Italian word originating from Baldassare Castiglione's The Book of the Courtier, where it is defined by the author as a certain nonchalance, so as to conceal all art and make whatever one does or says appear to be without effort and almost without any thought about it. It is the ability of the courtier to display an easy facility in accomplishing difficult actions which hides the conscious effort that went into them."
Nice word! Though I think that definition is captured adequately in english by the colloquial use of the word 'cool'. That being somewhat diluted though, sprezzatura can bring back the emphasis. Thanks for that.
I met Guthrie at NAMM this past year: he was an extremely humble and friendly man. His advice to everyone on how to be a virtuoso is: "Take it is that makes you, you; and exaggerate it." I would have loved to stay and talk with him, but he was on his way somewhere, so that is all we get. :)
I had the finished model arrive yesterday and it's far from a disappointment. The guitar really does play like no other that I possess and he's certainly done a fantastic job at ensuring the buyer gets what they pay for unlike other signature models. Plays like a dream. Thank you, sir.
This is true. I bought Stevie Vai's signature guitar and got sent a plate of spaghetti and meatballs so I returned it and bought the Tony Iommi signature SG and received a 12v truck battery. Not what I'd paid for.
He's is so far past trying to play the instrument, he plays what ever pops in his head. The connection mind, body and soul is priceless..... Much more success to the giver........I am inspired.
Hands down one of the MOST creative guitar players and musicians on the face of this planet! Thanks for sharing yourself with the rest of us, I was really getting bored with all the crappy music we were starting to see out there - now I look forward to new music again!
"It pleases me greatly" I love watching this guy play. Not just the shreddy stuff, but his whole vibe/personality. It all comes out in his playing. I found my self smiling because of this video.
I know that gave me chills lol. He's doing like an arpeggiated glissando or something. He's fretting an A6/9(add7?) (fretted 544454), plays the 4th fret 3rd string, then he hits the 6th string harmonic (17th fret) by resting his right hand index finger on the string above the fret and plucking with his right thumb, then plucks the 4th string (no harmonic) with his right pinky, then does the harmonic for the 5th string (16th fret) the same way, then plucks the 5th string with his pinky again, and so on until he ends the lick by hitting the harmonic on the 4th string. Let me know if that makes sense for ya. Cheers! "Talent" is having a lot of interest in something. Even if two people practice the same amount daily and one of them sounds "better" is because they use their time accordingly or are genuinely more interested in ENJOYING what they're doing. We think Guthrie is this inhuman monster, but he started young and was encouraged to play. He enjoys it and plays non-stop. That's why he's good. Don't diminish yourself with the idea of natural talent. Do what you love to no end and you will see results.
About bone vs self-lubricating nut (tusq f.e.); Guthrie´s right about the SL nut BUT that´s because he uses a tremolo wich causes a great amount of friction at the nut. If the guitar has a fixed bridge, a SL nut don´t suffer as badly from the problem Guthrie´s pointing out. To those who say I´m wrong, I currently own a Schecter Hellraiser, have had it for about 2 years and the nut is still completely fine :)
You'll see more fingerpicking guys doing this.. Doyle Dykes, Tommy Emmanuel, and the guys they learned it from.. Chet Atkins, Travis.. that whole group and older. Pick with your thumb while using your index to sound a harmonic.. you can practice at an open string but you can move the note wherever when fretted. Then use your ring finger to pick a regular note. Then just go back and forth..up and down a chord, put little pull-offs in or a tremolo. Look up Doyle Dykes' "The Visitation" or "Freebird" for more examples. The guys I mentioned use that technique frequently, though.
Amazing how this man takes a modest even odd sounding tone and does something useful with it in a note or less. First note -odd; second, third, fourth...perfect. I hate him. Torture watching him play.
Played this guitar at 2014 NAMM.. Best guitar in show. I Plugged into an EVH amp and immediately became my favorite guitar. I don't know that any guitar is worth this kind of money but if money is no issue then this is the guitar you want
Yea, well I can believe that with the Charvel having a maple cap and a maple neck, there's where the icepick is coming from :) My favorite tone ever from him is that Larry Carlton style track where he's using a Root Beer colored Suhr...it could be mics and preamps creating the magic but I've always attributed all the mojo to being a Cornford..see how the marketing deludes me!
Even this prototype is clearly more thought out in comparison to the suhr. Soundwise, I really dont want to judge via utube. There needs to be the same basis in equipment to do that.
***** That is definitely true, but considering we're hearing both with the same RUclips compression and whatnot, means that they both got the same treatment. I still prefer the Suhr for it's clean sound, it just sounded amazing in his hands.
Although I build custom guitars I have to put hand on heart and agree with you in so far as a good carpenter can make a work of art with the most basic tools but the most expensive tools in the world won't necessarily make a carpenter good! A lot of people disagree with that! But Guthrie deserves a great guitar and its fantastic he shares his passion. He and Alex Hutchings are my favourite inspirers!
The benefit of having a custom-built guitar is that you can choose the dimensions, woods and hardware. It won't sound "better" than a decent off-the-rack guitar, it's just tailored to your tastes. Even with assembly-line guitars: A $1,199 Les Paul Studio sounds just like a $3,899 Standard (with same pups). After a certain point with a solid body ($2000, according to the custom builder I wrote ad copy for) you're paying for "fancy finish and a name". His last one (semi-hollow) sold for $25,000.
Talent is most definitely not just having interest in something. There are people with very little interest in some things who manage to just pick it up naturally, whilst someone who is immensely interested and has immersed themselves and "used their time accordingly" and thoroughly enjoy what they're doing take FOREVER to actually get anywhere with it. It happens, i've been witness.
Its fascinating to see Guthrie give his perspective on a custom made guitar. I'm a guitar maker myself and learned something from this video. Guthrie would definately need a bone nut, the way he plays, however I'm intrigued by the baked head as presumably the coating is epoxy resin to avoid moisture getting in but you have to be careful not to dry out the wood too much as it makes it brittle. I've experimented with narrow section laminated necks in different timbers to get stability and action.
My dear sir, tone STARTS in the fingers. The technique and subtle nuances in a guitarist's hands are what characterize the tone before it gets sent through the strings, pickups then amp. This is why Guthrie prefers as transparent a sound as possible, so that you hear HIM. Tweaks and custom design quirks - certainly in the case of someone like Guthrie- are more than gimmicks. It enables the player to feel totally comfortable, leaving them free to create their own unique sound.
RUclips outta do away with the 'dislike' button all together, i mean its an little bit of an open insult to some true great talent and art, just have a 'like' option for people who enjoy the video so much as they want to contribute and then if they dont then move on to something they do like without leaving a quick dig.......then again there is much out there that deserves to be frowned upon, damnit boy you've done it again lad! And breath, best wishes, great stuff! Stu
The way the timber affect tone and sustain is by altering the way the string "rings out" or sustains post pick or strum. The amount of deadening or amount of sustain affect how the string vibrates throughout its cycle therefore affecting how the pickups translate. This coupled with varying pickup types, configuration and output can alter the "tone" and resonance of a particular guitar. This guy merely chose not to waste time going into the science. His skill is unquestionable.
I pretty much agree. Basswood and maple need each other. Basswood can work pretty well for lead tones if you have a midrangey pickup...you get a nice vocal tone. I agree with you on Alder, that is my favourite wood for most purposes.
To add to that, Tosin Abasi cited Guthrie and Kurt Rosenwinkel as two of his inspirations at a clinic I went to. So everyone should really listen to their favorite's favorites, cause that's where it's at!
As a guitarist who loves all the guitarists you named and far more (Mattias Eklundh, Ron Thal, Fabrizio Leo, Scott Mishoe, Dominic Cifarelli, etc.), I understand the "obsession" with Misha and Tosin. I absolutely love them, personally. They champion a new style of virtuosity that touches on points none of the classic fusion/shred players do -- especially Tosin. He's like a mix of Victor Wooten, Stanley Jordan, and Fredrik Thordendal. And he's a hard-working musician and excellent composer, too.
if you hold a note with your left hand and lightly tap that string one octave higher it makes a kooky harmonic. he did it by tapping all the notes of the chord he was holding in succession using his first and fourth fingers. plus hes an alien.
He's still using the Antique Modern sometimes, as well as the Badger amp and their pedals. He's just not endorsed anymore, so technically he's free to use whatever he wants, his Suhr stuff included.
What a nice guy. If only all of todays young shredders could be as humble and well spoken instead of having big chips on their shoulders! I salute you!
That sounds awesome. A guitar like that could be so useful. Most guitars like that I have seen are made with it being a steel string in mind. I'd like to see more electro acoustic guitars, of a smaller variety, being made for nylon.
The addition of stainless steel frets and a graphite reinforced neck seem really practical, I think that all guitars should have graphite reinforcement in the neck, to many issues with dead spots and warping in alot of guitars.
What is the tremolo stabilizer in the back. Is it based on two different springs or does it use a magnet to avoid lowered pitch of strings when doing a bend with the fretehand ?
The Wife & I road-tripped and followed The Aristocrats around for 4 dates on their last US tour as well as having Tickets to see Guthrie in Steve Wilson's live band, so I'll try to remember this thread and report back on tonal changes between the Suhr usage previous and the Charvels on Steven Wilson's tour as well as the next Aristocrats US Tour...
"The unfortunately named 'nut source" lmao! Guthrie is so ridiculously funny without even trying to be.. just like his playing.. so ridiculously mind blowing but done so effortlessly
I was at the store a couple days ago checking out the used rack (one of my fav spots) and there was this Charvel. Didn't look like anything special, like some frankenstrat rip or something so I figured it must be cheap but I could tell looking at the neck it looks like it plays well. So plugged it in. Holy shit! Played like butter and sounded great. Could bend forever and not pop a string. I thought "damn! Wtf is this?" I checked out the price tag and went "oh shit...THAT makes sense " $1,700. It was a Charvel Jake E Lee signature.
I understand the obsession to. I remember first coming across some of the Periphery instrumentals a lot of years ago on youtube and being very excited about it due to how different it was to everything I had heard previous to it. I didnt mean any disrespect to Misha and Tosin but there are so many great guitarists that seem to be in there shadow. Its somewhat reminiscent to the Jerry C canon rock craze. That's probably the best description of Tosin I have ever read lol.
I work for myself primarily and I suppose would call myself an innovative woodworker and am pretty small time as innovation is not really encouraged in the UK but I have the freedom to experiment (also because I don't have a nagging wife!) I have to say I have only made 20 guitars but each one pushes the enveloppe in some way and I'm currently working on a prototype travel electro acoustic guitar with built in amp (dual soundbox) when time allows.
How does he do that at 4:38! I have never heard anything so awesome. What chord is that and on which strings do you do the harmonics? Sounds like a harp.
Even his guitar seems like cool guy to have a beer with.

He has a magical voice. Just listen to him talk.
What a beast!!! Well rounded player can play multiple styles
Glad to see him playing the best!
what do you mean? The volume controls volume the tone controls tone, the switch controls pickup selection.
How does he do that at 4:38! I have never heard anything so awesome. What chord is that and on which strings do you do the harmonics? Sounds like a harp.
I like it when the g string slides into the nut slot.
