I always assumed you walked away from neighborhoods because of your injury. You need to get back on that shit man. one of the best series on RUclips in my opinion. Or, find something that you’re equally as passionate about because you have great stories to tell
I, too, loved the Pittsburgh Neighboorhood series so, naturally, I had to watch this video. Seems like you're becoming a modern day philosopher. I'm MUCH older than you, so my guess is you're getting older and discovering what is important to you in YOUR life. This is not a quick straight-through process and continues throughout your life. If you keep offering videos like this, you just may help or at least get others to think about what is important in their lives. Try getting others engaged in this process through your videos. You may be surprised at the results. Every comment can be therapeutic.
my smartphone broke a couple weeks ago, and after a decade of fruitlessly trying to curb my screen addiction, i decided to replace it with a flip phone. so far, i'm spending more time on my laptop, but it's a totally different & less consuming type of distraction. reading more, have more energy, find myself doing at least mildly productive things to fill time more often. i really want more people to get off the smartphone train, and i'm hopeful that many of us are heading in that direction. excited to watch/listen!! edit: unsurprisingly, watching the video gave me more to think about (classic dean bog). i've struggled with depression since i was 13, around the same time i got my first smartphone; i don't think it caused it, but it certainly worsened things. my phone has been such a crutch - as dean said, a way to not have to sit with myself. i haven't felt creative or passionate since i was a child. my main pastime is reading/learning stuff, so i've been focusing on retaining information in the wake of ditching my smartphone. i hadn't even considered the fact that eventually, maybe, i will start wanting to Do Things again. that would be so cool. fingers crossed.
I count myself lucky to be among the last generation (elder GenX) to get through college before the internet became a thing; proud/happy/relieved to be a digital immigrant. But this is an even more pervasive and potentially damaging issue. Thank you, Dean -- great to see you back at it!
Moving into the NRQZ changed my life. Not in an easy way, but for sure in a better one. Never forget this revelation Dean, and please don't stop making the videos YOU want to make. You are legitimately one of my favorite artists.
Dammit Dean. How am I supposed to get over the crush I've had on you for years if you're just gonna go and make more of these wonderful videos?? C'mon now, you gotta help me out and go back into hiding, lol!!!!! 😁 Seriously though, I love the change of pace. You've done a couple "specials" over the years and I always thought they were very honest, authentic, well-paced and beautifully shot as always. With 22K, anecdotal evidence says at around this point, you can change course with your channel without much effect on subs or viewership. Excited to see where you go next, be it back to the neighborhoods, or maybe off in a new direction! Hey, using your phone less should free up some time:) Be well, my friend. 💜💜
Dean , so glad you are back. You are talented. Praying for you and keep on showing us this amazing world ( and it's challenges ) through your creative lens and your words !
That intro title card was too legit. So happy to see another video from you, Dean. I was also born in the mid-90s. I am so grateful to have grown up before iPads were given to infants. I feel like we dodged some major developmental disruptions. But you’re right - it’s still pervasive, and insidious, to keep these devices around as adults.
Spent six years working full time on a documentary series that will probably never see the light of day. About half way into that experience it became incredibly difficult to enjoy watching most content (not that this stopped me from endlessly scrolling). Neighborhoods hit the spot for reasons I find difficult to quantify. Anyway. . . .thanks for making this video, I especially enjoyed the dragon part, the anxiety head's extra crisp smile at the end was a nice touch.
I’ve been fighting my phone addiction for quite a while. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve deleted and reinstalled Twitter. This is a terrific video like all of your videos, and I hope you post more self-reflections moving forward. Keep swipin!
I'm struggling to overcome a phone addiction as well. Bit by bit I'm getting better, and improving my focus on what's important. It's good to see you again and that your talus is doing better!
I think this is what I've been needing to hear. Putting the wasted time into perspective makes it scarily real. I would like to live my life to the fullest...
Loved the video Dean, I was happy to see the new video notification pop up! It reminded me of my Philosophy 101 class in college, where our professor tried to instill a sense of mindfulness in our freshman class. He said it wasn't cheesy to ponder your whole existence (6:22), it was actually really important if you thought about it for more than 30 seconds. Yeah we go to work cause we gotta eat, go to class because you paid your tuition, but like what's the point after that? Shouldn't our goals be to try and figure out the meaning of life? What does true happiness look like? How do I live life to the fullest and all that jazz? Smartphones make is so easy to just coast by and go on autopilot. These are the #1 time wasters of all time, specifically crafted by tech companies, advertisers, and who knows how many psychologists, all working together to capture your attention for as long as humanly possible. But hey, maybe coasting by isn't the worst? (4:00). These are big, imposing, philosophical questions after all, especially if I'm not where I want to be in life, I'm not happy with my current job, I don't know what I want to do. However, these aren't the kind of problems you can just ignore and they'll go away. We're all subject to the same human condition. These questions wont answer themselves. It's easy to get lost in the minutia of everyday life, especially when it feels like your main goal at the moment is just to make it to the end of class, the end of the workday, the end of the week, the end of the semester, etc, etc. Smartphones only make this problem worse and help insulate you from your own introspection. Before you know it you're looking in the mirror and asking "what am I doing with my life!? where did all my time go!?" Luckily though, we have the agency to make a change at any time - this is YOUR life! I know that's easier said that done (11:12), but this video is a great opportunity to plant the idea in your head. I don't need to go freeze my phone in a block of ice and bury it in the backyard, maybe instead I can just resist the urge to instinctively scroll through reddit while waiting in line at the grocery store for 47 seconds and go from there.
i straight up killed my addiction by following method: cracked my iphone screen could only read half of the screen...kept the phone. screen lost another 10%...that's good. kept the phone. really keeps you off the damn thing having a dying screen. there should be an app that does this because i could only text and make calls with it...had to guess where the numbers were on the keypad but it broke the addiction. I finally got a new phone around a year after the screen got messed up and now I don't pick it up compulisvely. full disclosure i quit all social media 5 years ago or so. thats a big plus to quitting the cell phone addiction. integral, actually. anyways i barely touch it now. i got a tv with my laptop connected so i just use that and when i'm at a restaurant alone i meditate like the old school days. phone not a temptation or issue anymore...case fucking closed.
Its great to see some new content. I remember watching you around Christmas of 19'. I didn't know where you disappeared too. Sorry you had to deal with a broken Talis. Glad to see you are back at making videos!
Always a pleasure seeing your videos. This message is exactly what I needed at this point in my life -- thank you for sharing. Glad to see you've healed up too! Wish you the best of luck in whatever you decide to do next.
I'm here because I'm addicted to Neighborhoods of Pittsburgh, and I need my fix Dean.
I will always stop by to watch a Dean Bog video.

Dean, pick a subject and run with it. You have a special talent. Happy to see and hear you again. You've been missed.
Dean, buddy, you're so talented. Thanks for encouraging us all to be better, healthier, happier versions of ourselves

All so interesting. The flip phone is a great idea.

The subconcious grabbing of my phone to take a break from this video really got me thinking... Great video
I liked the transit series too. Glad to see your injury has healed as well as it has. No pressure, but I think you are very talented.

Really enjoyed this Dean. I hope we can both spend less time on our phones and more time making sick things.
