Based on James Clavell’s novel, FX’s Shōgun is set in Japan in the year 1600 at the dawn of a century-defining civil war. Lord Yoshii Toranaga is fighting for his life as his enemies on the Council of Regents unite against him, when a mysterious European ship is found marooned in a nearby fishing village.

Yes, especially when 2-3 Christian regents may swing their support for Toranaga soon. Imagine the surprise on Ishido's face when they take a vote and 2 out of the 4 remaining regents vote 'No" on impeaching Toranaga. 🤣

Shōgun just keeps raising the bar each new episode. This is definitely shaping up to be one of the best shows of 2024 already. It deserves all the success it's finding right now.
Depending on how HotD season 2 does, this may be the best show of 2024! I just loved episode 5. That whole seen with the sake was perfect!

It is neither frustrating nor annoying. This is how it should be sometimes. It is nice to have actual cliffhanger and be anticipating for something, because you always have something to look forward to and be excited for. Also everyone will be equally caught up on the show.
This show should win best effects and best costume hands down.

It is based on a very long book. One book. If they wanted it to have more seasons, they would already plan that. Not ever happening and it is a good thing. Don't try to improve something good,because you will end with a distaster. There are out there franchises which collapsed. BUT James Clavell has written the whole series of books set in Japan, similar to Shogun. You can say spiritual succesors. Each one as good as this. We can hope that if that remake will be as well recived as it was up today, we will have more series based on diffrent stories.@@Aks.868

She looks like a true ayakashi. And sounds even more like one. The most scary japanese demons were looking like a noble ladies. Who would have guessed ?
Indeed. The real life figure her character is based on was the wife to the late Toyotomi Hideyoshi (known as the Taiko in Shogun)
@@damesayo4656 funny you mention this because in Nioh 1 dlc Bloodsheds End, the character that’s more or less one in the same as Lady Ochiba was actually possessed by a corrupt Nine Tailed Fox yokai resulting in her vicious and calculating nature
Although I know that the original book by James Clavell didn't cover Siege of Osaka, I am already hoping that they will expand this series to the final decisive battle at the end of the Sengoku period, fought between Ieyasu Tokugawa and Lady Yodo.
@@tomatodo375 sadly I don’t think we’ll see that. Showrunner already confirmed we’re getting 10 episodes. That’s all. They’re sticking pretty close to the material they have in the novel. We MAY get to see Sekigahara though which would be cool
The last episode was one of the most intense pieces of television I've ever seen, it sent me reeling.

That dinner date from hell!
The last episode (5) was a mini-hereditary horror type of sh*t done so subtly. The house was cursed - even the people living there (blackthorne, buntaro, Fuji, Mariko), i mean all of them have dark pasts. No wonder the tatarigami demon spirit was summoned. The bad smell, the arrows on the post, the infidelity (both unfaithful to spouse and disbelief on religion), jealousy, envy, pride, the lies and the list goes on) - absolute masterpiece writing! Their relationship was as destructive as the earthquake, or even their presence alone can be symbolized as a massive landslide.
What a true masterpiece you all have put together! This is what the public has been wanting for years: great acting, direction, and writing that doesn't preach to us about how to live our lives. Thank you, thank you, thank you a thousand times!
This series has some of the best and well written female characters in recent shows
Facts 💯 recent shows have failed to show the actual strengths of female characters.. Hollywood has been portraying female characters as strong warrior type.. and I think they should be portraying a more as a rogue type character.
@@CactusJack60 historically men dominated physically, while the women used emotional intelligence and gossip (theres a theory that gossip is why humans evolved) to play their hands. It's equally impressive and I'm glad they are showcasing it. Of course women were powerful warriors to in my parts of the world, I'm just pointing out the evolutionary advantages they had to develop.
Blue eyed samurai was also good with female characters

Didn't give this show a chance, but today I spent 5 hours watching. And now I'm kicking myself for not waiting longer. Absolutely great show, it's a nice change from usual shows
Good movies are so rare these days...but l think we can all agree that this one is turining into a masterpiece.
A Japanese here, this show may be the one Japanese filming studios would like to make but couldn't due to lack of cost

@@carloschacal9334 Very big-budget, considering the detail to costumes and props, the need for consultants behind the scenes, the filming equipment... almost as if the mini-series was a trilogy of ~150-minute long A-rated Hollywood movies.
@@carloschacal9334 Look at Godzilla minus one. Their production cost was 15 mill and to them, that's highly expensive for a japanese film. Compare to Hollywood, thats nothing.
An American here. If this is what a Japanese studio can do with a big-budget then they should get all the money they need. Shogun is excellent and hopefully will shake up American studios to do better. Our studios here have grown fat and lazy.
To those who dont understand the previous episode
Mariko (Akechi tama in real life) was the daughter of a traitor ,(Akeiche Mitsuhide) the one that forced Oda Nobunaga commit seppuku ,
Taiko (Toyotomi Hideyoshi) and Toranaga(Tokugawa Ieyasu) both served under Nobunaga as his General and Hideyoshi
defeated Akeichi and became the Shogun , Akeichi Tama's husband pretty much hide her away and those years She converted to Christianity and learned Portuguese , Tokugawa Ieyasu over the year gathered allies specifically the enemies of Hideyoshi which basically Akechi Tama's husband. , Akechi Tama Died in Osaka Castle while as a hostage.

This is why I like this show. The female characters are portraited as smart and cunning. Take note Hollywood, a woman doesn't need to swing a sword and butcher men to be a stronk woman.
the most scaries about women are their power to manipulating, no matter what era.
The fact that this is only 10 episodes kills me. Like I get the original material its based off limits it, but my god is it good. What am I going to do after Episode 10?
Wait for adaptations of other James Clavell books. He wrote plenty as good as this one :) All set in Japan.

8. Watch Mr. Inbetween
9. Watch Yellowstone

I knew that Fumi Nikaidou (Ochiba) and Hiroyuki Sanada (Toranaga) were amazing. Their voice performances in this trailer turn me on.
Although I read the book, watched the original miniseries, this new version is so fresh and well written. The costumes, the VFX, the plot twists, the pacing, the dialogue, the character driven arcs- all harmoniously work together; week after week I’m left spellbound by each episode ending on a riveting cliff hanger. My only regret is they could’ve made this into 2 seasons instead of one. Unfortunately, like the transient beauty of Sakura blossoms, the end will come too soon.
Do the Japanese characters ever call John by name instead of Anjin? It is a small grievance of mine, like John is even simpler than Anjin
You should read up on the real history about the Duch -Japanese trade!

@@iRoboticGamingtechnically. The Japanese will call them with honorifics, then the family name (so it should be he's called Blackthorne-San or Blackthorne-Sama)
And if you have a native Japanese friend which has not too good or even no basic english. You'll notice that "Blackthorne" is too mouthful (Burakkuhorunu or something like that)
In addition. Name "Anjin" is not only used in the novel. William Adams (inspiration of John Blackthorne and one of few foreign Hatamoto under Tokugawa Bakufu) also called "Anjin"

I have never seen feudal Japan portrayed like this before, the ladies characters are extremely powerful....
There were powerful women even in Japan's feudal era.
Yodo-dono, who is actually the model for Ochiba, took control of Osaka Castle after her husband's death.
In the 13th century, a woman called the Ama-Shogun took control of the shogunate after her husband's death.
The woman who is said to be the most powerful is Tomiko Hino.
in the 15th century, She made a huge fortune speculating in rice and became richer than her husband Shogun.
She lent the money to her husband's allies and enemies to gain her power.
In Japan, there are dramas about them.

This is EPIC! What a masterpiece !
I lived in Osaka Japan for 5 months and it was incredible- the first miniseries was very good but this adaptation is realistic and credible- my husband works with some Japanese ppl and one guy (and his wife) are watching and loving this series- even down to the Japanese dialect that would have been used in 1600s Japan. Kyoto was one time the capital but it moved from Edo (Tokyo) to Kyoto and back to modern day Tokyo
The words would be equivalent to speaking in Shakespearean English in UK
Lady Ochiba has some serious plans- Read the books of James Clavell - he wrote the screenplay for the 1980s miniseries
I think Clavell would approve!! Btw Orson Welles narrates the original miniseries

Noh is called a “mask drama” or “ masked performance” .Depending on the actors’ roles, they wear various carved wooden Noh masks.
In another interview, Hiroyuki Sanada said that he brought in a traditional Noh professional from Japan just for this scene.
The costumes and tools are also said to be very historical, and I am very much looking forward to seeing them.

I think Anjin will got promoted again and this time will be equipped with the swords

Its possible Toranaga gave John his own pair of swords as a gift for saving him

Amazing series the cast are faultless and really make this show special with their attention to detail and their acting. This just goes to show if you leave the politics and current trends out of your Shows and concentrate on the source material and delivery you can knock it out of the park. Shogun will go down as a cult classic I’m sure.
I'd like to see an interview of Hoshi Moeka. She's so good in this show.

@highstreet2535 Pacing the shows gives people time to talk about each episode as it drops, it generates more hype. Also, this is how tv was in the 'olden' days, get over it.
Gather round younglins, and let me bore you with stories of my childhood. Not only did we have to wait each week, we had to watch it one certain time, with no pauses! You do not know the panic and thrill of forced painful urination so you don't miss anything, or fighting your sister to get food cooked during the commercial window. IT was a simpler time, and he was a good friend.

I completely agree. One of the best telly shows of the 80's, and the cast was stellar. Sullah from the Indiana Jones films and the original Doctor Kildare as well were just two of them.

amazing series so far. everything about it is high end. the script, the costumes, sets and everyone acting has been great, with not one sign of wokery in it. well done.
This show has GoT level vibes. I love the feeling going into a show I'm thoroughly enjoying. You guys killed it! Even you Mariko! Not gonna lie I hated her character in Monarch/acting but she's being killing it in Shogun. Amazing what a good script can do for a good actress
