  • Bonding Guinea Pigs | 5 Tips
Bonding guinea pigs can be quite a challenge as all introductions are different, and you never know how they will react until you finally let them meet. Some guinea pigs will never get along, and these tips are not guaranteed to work for all guinea pigs, though in my time of owning guinea pigs, I have followed these tips with mostly all successful outcomes. You just have to find a way which will work best for the guinea pigs you have based on their individual personalities. Also, don't be alarmed if the guinea pigs continue displaying dominant behaviour after living together for a while - it is likely they are still trying to establish a hierarchy, so you must give them time!

Once I saw at the end she said that older pigs accept younger pigs, I did a sigh of relief because I just got a really little pig and was worried that my older one would pick on her. PHEW

@Jonas Lastname that makes me feel so much better, ive been trying to bond my oldest pig with a baby, and the older one is super dominant, so its been tough trying to bond them. i adopted an adult when the oldest pigs friend died but that was horrible and they never got along, so i surrendered her.

  • @JubarRex

DON’T let the guinea pigs meet on your lap. That will provide an enclosed space that is not easy to escape from for the guinea pig. They could start fighting on your lap and, with no way to escape, they could hurt each other or hurt you. Skip the step on the lap and let them meet in a neutral zone like it says in the video. SERIOUSLY, letting them meet for the first time on your lap could lead to serious injury or fear for the guinea pigs.

I got my first one at a crappy pet shop he had no friends was the only one hes 13 weeks now. After a week or two I realized he was blind and deaf. Then I picked up Teddy and he is 6 weeks old other than rumblestrutting in that show dominance that get along great and they sleep in the same house so I'm so glad about that any tips for deaf and blind guinea pigs would be great

this is really late, but you can either adopt a shelter guinea pig the same age, or if you look online there are 'rent a guinea pig' organizations that allow you to rent a guinea pig as a companion until your guinea pig passes, and then you return the Guinea pig back.

Yeah, split cage method might have to be permanent for my couple. The two pigs are vicious when close, but communicate a lot when seperated.

      @lost-mau5 2 года назад

@@daniellbuckley4573 7 months later, they are still separated, but provided ample room to socialize with each other. The territorial acts from both pigs have definitely simmered, and they probably could co-exist together. I am still nervous to put the two together for long periods of time.

Sometimes guinea pigs will chirp if they don’t have a hidey hole, especially at night. Your pig may have been feeling anxious about being exposed in open space when they’d normally sleep in a shelter. Removing hidey holes is a good idea to avoid a pig getting cornered and fighting during introductions, but replacing them with ones with two exits can give your pigs security and an easy escape.

I have a female piggie 1 year old and I introduced her a baby female 1.5 months old. The old one bites the baby and bullies it all the time. Specially when the little one comes closer
Tried all these methods on the video. It's been second week and the old one still bites or chases away the little one when they meet on neutral ground. I have them in the same cage with a separator between them so they can communicate and smell each other.
I thought they where social animals. And females werent fighting. WTF
Now I feel like an idiot. Because everyone said piggies shouldn't be alone.

When I bonded my three males, Reaper, my lone boy for I don't know how long, and the bonded brothers I rehomed, Soul and Shang; I hand fed treats and hand fed all the veggies with the "Up" command. Began with Reaper then started with the twins about 4-5 days after I got Reaper. Once bonding was put in session, I started with their names then "Up" they all felt comfort by knowing the same command and got the same treats. Reaper was like *girl tastes kombucha for the first time* for a second in the background it was so funny, I don't think he's seen that before, 100% worked for me but that was only when they all munched together and zen for the moment, I limited my time in the pin (they're all around the same age, Reaper was said to be 1 year and the twins are 10 months. They're a bit skittish since they came from homes that couldn't properly care for them in the long run -but that's why I say "Poopie" and hold it to them for a mini sniff before I wave my monster hand all over picking up their droplets and start cleaning.) I did this everyday in their own cages until they knew what I was doing, I backed off a bit with the cleaning, although it is still daily. They don't seem to mind after that. It's just routine that worked with their personalities! Hope this gives tips for anyone who tries to bond. :^)

I've had a skinny for almost 2 months and I just got another guinea pig who's younger. They're both boys. Twice now I've introduced them in neutral territory, but the new one chases my skinny and bites him. He's breaking skin, so I really worries me. They're sharing a cage with a partition. Today is the first day they have interacted a lot. My skinny squeaks at the new one a lot then popcorns everywhere. I'm gonna try having both of them on my lap tonight. I think that might be better.

Thanks for the video! My boys were bonded 2 years ago but after pulling them from a neglectful home, I realized how disgusting their cage was that they came with, so I had to house them in a much smaller cage for a few days. They started nipping, fighting, blocking each other in corners, away from food, etc. And despite it being only 4 days - I genuinely had to separate them and I was scared to put them back together since. I recently decided to try bonding them again and they will hiss, show their teeth, chase each other around, and not even try to mount each other. They will settle down and clean themselves though, they'll sit and eat food distanced from each other, one might even lay out on the opposite end of the cage - but then they'll go back to hissing, teeth bearing, jumping up and down on their front legs, and nose bumping each other. Even though they aren't trying to "hurt" each other, and they settle down - I'm concerned by the lack of attempt at mounting. Should I be worried, should I just leave them alone, are they actually fine? Please help :(

I have a year and a half old pig named Ruthie. I adopted another one yesterday. She is a 3 month old baby guinea pig. She is very timid and doesn’t know veggies yet. I’ve been putting them together for periods of time to let them know each other and maybe my baby guinea pig (her name is Squirrel) will kind of copy what Ruthie does like how younger siblings copy the older sibling. So I’m hoping your methods work🙂thanks Erin!

I also just want to add another tip for anyone out there, it's much easier to introduce guinea pigs when they're young because, in my experience, they are less dominant because they are the same age with the same level of authority. My guinea pigs are 3 months apart and they got along extremely well, the dominant behavior lasted for an hour and never occurred again. They now are always side by side and they like protect each other from threats.

I have one ginuea pig atm but I feel he gets lonely at times especially when im not home. I do want to get him a pal but idk how he’d respond. Hes very charismatic & isn’t afraid to show expression. I’m currently building a bigger cage as hes only 3 months old. I do feel he’d be the dominant one as this is his house but I’m hoping hes okay w having a pal so he won’t get so lonely.

My guinea pigs are not the same size so when they dominate the smaller one gets hurt the smaller one is the size of a hamster and the other is quite big and I’m scared that they will hurt each other or brake his back. Any tips?

If it goes on for a long time and doesn't stop and becomes aggressive to the point where they could get seriously injured, then you should separate them. If they stop then they might just end up getting along and you won't have to.

Do you think adding brumley for the winter would help or would their then be fighting outside with the others

Then the outdoor piggies wouldn't get along as well - they really do need a boar to keep them peaceful aha :)

I just have a question because I have 4 piggies all are female my oldest is 3 that’s Juliet, bell is almost 2, chestnut is 1 and echo is 6 months. I have done floor time in a new place, tried the food trick, lap time and what is happening is the older two are bullying the younger two who are submissive piggies they are running around and squeezing like they are afraid and they have even pulled hair. I’ve asked a lot of people for advice but they said it’s normal behavior because they are still new to the younger piggies but I want to make sure this is normal behavior because I don’t want to stress them out

They can eat bell peppers! Just don't let them have too many and make sure to wash them before feeding.

I don't think I did the best job at bonding my guinea pigs. The first one I got in May and the second in June. Their a month apart in age. They get along but their not best friends or something..
