Had 2 Altos in the past - first the same age as the one in the video, but manual, and the 2nd one of the newer models. Both were fun to drive with a wheel on each corner road holding was great - nearly as much fun as an original mini. Know what you mean about small autos - currently looking for one for my daughter and that would have been ideal!! lol
Small, light, nimble, low powered cars can be so much fun. I'm 64 and still ride fast bikes Yamaha R1 and other stuff, my daily driver is a 2014 Fiat Panda 875cc Turbo Twin Air auto. For your daughter, maybe a Fiat 500 Twin Air auto. The Panda 4x4 is cool also. Good luck.
I had a Suzuki Celerio 68reg which replaced the Alto , great little car 100 percent reliable did about 45,000 miles trouble free. Maybe you should do a video on a Celerio.
I used to have a Pixo. It was a great car for driving around cities but not for motorways. That said, it was a nice car and a good first one, along with little gems like this. Glad it finally went to a new home and you made some money out of it. Your colleague is right about dealing with things there and then. A great thing to live by.
I had one of these (manual) for a short time - it had a good driving position, and a really really sweet-spinning engine. The ride was good for such a small car too. I really liked it. Unfortunately the steel wheels had rusted pinholes somewhere, so the tyres were constantly going flat!
These are bulletproof cars I have had a 1998 , a 55 plate and currently 2013 as second cars , as long as you service them regularly they won't let you down .You have to watch the model you have bought for rust underneath. My current one 60+ mpg happy at 60 to 70 mph on the motorway. I highly recommend them so underated . Yes made in India .
Good to see the walk around back in the video. Doesnt have to be super long imo but definetely better then no walk around like in the Kia video! Anyway love your video's keep up the good work! ✌️
I think these cars were built in India by Maruti in a JV with Suzuki. They didnt need rustproofing in most of India, hence the rust.. Still good little cars though and fairly tough
So pleased you are continuing to look at all classes of cars. Suzuki is a big brand down under with the latest Swift being a best seller. Although much better finished , and much safer, they still remain utterly reliable and the Swift Sport which I have is more than rapid. They are much cheaper than in the UK. A new swift sport was less than 15000 pounds. Do you have import duty or tariffs on some cars ? 👍 still the best car channel on RUclips.
This was mine and many Indians first car, mine was a 2006 model and it ran perfectly for 15 years after which we had to return it back to dealership due to pollution laws, but the car was running amazing even in its 15th year and was super cheap to maintain for me as a college student. Love this car❤
These little bangers are absolute gems imo . I picked a 58 Toyota Aygo’Blue edition’ last week for 500 . Needed nothing really’ just a good scrub up and loosening up ‘ you know the score’ one elderly owner’low miles etc . The amount of calls I had ‘ I wish I had another 10 of them. These are cars that do everything needed on a daily basis and often overlooked. I can see very similar creeping up very soon 😉. Enjoyed your upload as always’ regards to you and yours 👍👌
This car is not a crap as some folks stated. It is one of the greatest mini cars you can get with low budget. Thanks to its low weight along with its narrow tires that you can move on snow without putting tyre chain. Its ground clearence is also quite high so you do not have to slow down on uneven bumpy roads. Its suspension set up is quite soft, like a limo :) Its equipment level is also spot on. I bought mine in 2005 brand new and still using it as my second car. It is indispensable in urban traffic and if you drive in a calm manner, it is not bad for long-range country roads as well. Mine is 5-speed manual and its clutch is very light and comfortable so you do not get tired changing gears in heavy traffic. As the reviewer said, its hydrolic wheel is very comfortable as well. Unlike its newer brother and other similar size cars, this version has a 4-pot engine and its volume is relatively large ( 1100cc ) so the engine is strong and vibration/noise free. My only gripe would be about central lock actuators. They have worn out prematurely.... Cheers!
Great little cars. So easy to drive. Remarkably smooth engine and 50 mpg easy to achieve. Crash protection is rubbish but boot is decent, rear leg room good, driving position good. Corrosion on shock absorbers is more of an issue than you would think as bottom bracket can actually fail so worth replacing old originals, especially at the front. Biggest win is only £30 road tax although insurance can be oddly high. See loads in India where they seem to soldier on everywhere regardless.
I used to drive a 2009 Alto 798CC till last month. The indian variant kooks like the one in the video. It drives comfortable around 100-120kmph in highways
Mine was called the Silver Flash. Oh the irony. Did just under 9000 miles in 8 months as my daily commute, which was a 75 mile round trip on dual carriageways and fast A roads. Never let me down. Screamed at 70mph but still gave me over 50mpg, but it was the 5 speed manual. Came with one key, got the second cut at Timpson's for £30. Suzuki wanted £120.
Hey. I'm from India and my family has owned the facelifted 800cc model of this car for the last 14 years & my uncle has got this model. And yes MARUTI is an Indian company. Maruti Suzuki was a JV between Suzuki and Government of India in 1981 with Suzuki having majority equity since 2002 I think. Key differences between the one sold in UK and India that I noticed - We didn't get airbags. Other than the Hazard lights button, none of then other 3 to the side of it were in use
small cheap cars are fun for they are less stress than expensive cars . you do not get the worries with them, easier to park etc! great except on motorways , or up hills! . or at Santa pod probably!
all Suzuki cars are made in India and after then they are exported to other countries , in India MARUTI SUZUKI alto came in year 2000 with 0.8L , 1.0L and 1.1L all manual trans and starting price of around 2.5k pound to 5.5k pounds .
Good morning Mr Matt, could you please do a step by step video that details how a person can get their drivers license for the first time? Thank you so much
If ever there was an example of what is on the surfaces of your car that you touch every day and don't realise then this is it. The car looked clean in the 1st video. It really drives home what my dad said, clean the inside of your car every week, there is stuff left there every time you use it. You handle a lot of different things every day and transfer them to your car. He always said if you were out driving and stopped for lunch, wash your hands well before you eat.
My mother had one of these. Same color. Thanks for the memory lane! I thought those little 'cushion-like' items at 6:08 were against moist in the car (makes sense, given the mold the car later collected)?
I still find it amazing that a 16year old car like this, as basic as basic can sell for over a grand. I remember the days when you could buy a 10 to 15 year old car for about £150 just to thrash about on the farm. Those days are long gone
Now. It's kind of my dream car 💓 , I have the F8D model where everything is very basic , no AC , power windows & steering. Considering that the GL is fully equipped with a big rear head rest ,rear defogger, and the big dual instrument panel, it's a gem 💎
In india it was called the Maruti Suzuki Alto just Maruti was added in front. Super reliable multiple examples have been running in mainly cold parts of the country like foothills of Himalayas where streets are narrow and Japanese mechanical simplicity is needed to start at sub 10 or sub zero temperatures
I have this little car in red 🚗 and it’s perfect for me, I love this car. It’s nippy and easy to park, enough room for shopping, can fold seats down and fit 3 more people in.
Thanks again. Great idea embedding the promo from the original video into the lookback. Sorry things didn't work out for all involved yet at least the car washed its face, despite a nasty winter experience. Well done on that!

Speaking of back to basics motoring, my random though earlier this evening (when driving my Cavalier!) was how much I'd like wind up windows in the front of a car again. When I want the window open just a touch, usually the electric window goes all the way down or I end up fiddling with it to get it open by the amount I want 😅 The Alto looks like a cracking wee car, especially the price of a tyre!
brother, watching this car has me drooling considering I own a 2009 F8D Indian model which doesnt even have power steering. Only creature comforts include AC with heater, no power windows either! Plus its an automatic is such great exterior and interior condition.

Also Its Maruti Suzuki, the Indian umbrella of Suzuki, your welcome :)
i used to have one of these with the 1.0 liter engine. it was very peppy, and feels fast and nimble. i really loved that car. only problem is that once the body rust starts they only last about 3 years before you cant license them anymore if not repaired.
I have absolutely no interest in cars, I barley like to drive my own but for some reason you have become my new top gear. Before it got shit obviously 😂😂😂
My partner has a 2011 Alto. While my Volvo S40 consumes great dollops of cash to keep it running, the little Alto keeps going with nothing but fuel in the tank and an occasional tyre. Every damned MOT - pass with no advisories. They are great little cars. It's also done a couple of 200-mile trips, too.

Hi I am From India and I used to own a Maruti Suzuki WagonR 2009 it also had the same 1.1 litre engine
Hi Matt. Great car review on the Suzuk Alto. As well as being reliable, easy to service, cheap to maintain and it's ULEZ compliant. Great deal.😊
With even cheap cars getting ever more complex and complicated something simple, basic and straightforward can sometimes be very welcome.
I used to have a Pixo. It was a great car for driving around cities but not for motorways. That said, it was a nice car and a good first one, along with little gems like this. Glad it finally went to a new home and you made some money out of it. Your colleague is right about dealing with things there and then. A great thing to live by.
It's a legendary car in India.
It goes almost everywhere and it is utterly reliable ,fuel efficient.......unbeatable car.
In India Alto 800 is the best and highest selling car from Maruti Suzuki. Right now it's price is 5800 pounds.
Great video Matt, cant believe the look of joy on your face driving a £900 Suzuki.
Those little bags that you noticed when you first got into the car..., they looked very like those Pingit dehumidifier things.
I've owned one many years ago,it was very frugal and reliable..Another good review...Andre.
This is the car on which I learned to drive car in India... Its a nostalgia for me 🥰
Great reflections! Nice car, a everyday hero. Good to know its back on the road
Its suspension set up is quite soft, like a limo :)
Its equipment level is also spot on.
Cheers!
Even though it's not the most exciting car, those engines are just bulletproof.
Key differences between the one sold in UK and India that I noticed -
We didn't get airbags. Other than the Hazard lights button, none of then other 3 to the side of it were in use
Had one in Asia. It felt alive and honest. It drove quite willingly
Our family's first car!! It was a manual blue colored one. A very reliable car. Shame I wasn't old enough to drive it.
A Suzuki Alto is a great car it keeps driving with no nonsense 👍
Just bought one of these today for my daughter to learn to drive in. Full MOT, 40k miles, 2006, rock solid...£1460 happy days!
Suzuki ❤. It will probably last forever. I think you should do a road trip in it!
small cheap cars are fun for they are less stress than expensive cars . you do not get the worries with them, easier to park etc! great except on motorways , or up hills! . or at Santa pod probably!
You got a superb car good for travelling from point a to b this wont disappoint you
those bags are humidifier bags for damp and moisture.
I wondered if they were those hot bags you put on bad joints
all Suzuki cars are made in India and after then they are exported to other countries , in India MARUTI SUZUKI alto came in year 2000 with 0.8L , 1.0L and 1.1L all manual trans and starting price of around 2.5k pound to 5.5k pounds .
Good morning Mr Matt, could you please do a step by step video that details how a person can get their drivers license for the first time?
Thank you so much
I remember when something like this was worth like £3-400 from a private seller not that long ago 😂
Oh yes, no interest at all in these things and yet here I am in the gym watching when I should be benchpressing 😂
Haha no excuses
I still find it amazing that a 16year old car like this, as basic as basic can sell for over a grand. I remember the days when you could buy a 10 to 15 year old car for about £150 just to thrash about on the farm. Those days are long gone
Now. It's kind of my dream car 💓 , I have the F8D model where everything is very basic , no AC , power windows & steering. Considering that the GL is fully equipped with a big rear head rest ,rear defogger, and the big dual instrument panel, it's a gem 💎
I had one of these as my first car with manual. Cost me £1100 to buy in 2012 and I only spent about £1000 on it in the 6 or 7 years I had it
Super popular in the Indian subcontinent. It is a modernized tuk-tuk, what the Tata Nano wished to be.
I’m getting one of these in a couple of weeks the 2004 manual version for my first car, watching your video I can’t wait to drive it
In india it was called the Maruti Suzuki Alto just Maruti was added in front. Super reliable multiple examples have been running in mainly cold parts of the country like foothills of Himalayas where streets are narrow and Japanese mechanical simplicity is needed to start at sub 10 or sub zero temperatures
Good to hear that little runabout didn't get sent to the scrap-yard due to the mold.
Ah the Navara... we never did find out what happened to that pristine example (or the wing that was stuck in the office) 😁
It was repaired and then it’s gone to Ukraine
Was interested also, as a Navara owner in it for way more than I'd want to admit LOL.
Hi, the underlay is for underneath the boot carpet for sound deadening, should be spray glued to it.
I have been watching your Vids for a long time and this is among the cleanest as I have ever seen and "That" is a broken pushbar of a babycarridge....
I owned one of 2005 LXI model for 10 years. Its a cute, trouble free and easily maintained car. I love it.
We need your definitive ULEZ/ CAZ exempt ECONOMIC used car guide 😊
Apologies if I've missed it 😅
My old Lupo TDI sport is perfectly fine, other than ULEZ/ CAZ, but eventually i might succumb.
I’ve had 5 Suzukis. Good cars.
Love your work 👍
Owned a 2011 Alto 1.0 for 8 years 80k miles, 0 issues. mate has taken it to 110k only had backbox change, boot hydraulic strut change and 1 clutch. still going like new again. other friend had one new, took it to 115k miles 0 issues bar tyres brakes etc, Almost indestructible. Also Its Maruti Suzuki, the Indian umbrella of Suzuki, your welcome :)
My dad still owns one in India along with his creta
He bought it in 2012 and i must say affter 50k kms its still going really good
i used to have one of these with the 1.0 liter engine. it was very peppy, and feels fast and nimble. i really loved that car. only problem is that once the body rust starts they only last about 3 years before you cant license them anymore if not repaired.
Had this car as my 1st car (manual) and loved it perfect for a beginner, or want something cheap.
This one is Indian variant . It was manufactured in India by Maruti Suzuki and later shipped to Uk.
My aunt and even my teachers at school had this exact same model as their daily... I literally grew up on this.❤
I have absolutely no interest in cars, I barley like to drive my own but for some reason you have become my new top gear. Before it got shit obviously 😂😂😂
Haha Thanks! I appreciate it
My partner has a 2011 Alto. While my Volvo S40 consumes great dollops of cash to keep it running, the little Alto keeps going with nothing but fuel in the tank and an occasional tyre. Every damned MOT - pass with no advisories. They are great little cars. It's also done a couple of 200-mile trips, too.
