I've had an eerily similar journey to you; been into the hobby since the 90s, thought I wasn't good enough, got hooked on Dawn of War. Years passed, and I happened to see a video from PlayOn...of the same massive Space Marines vs Tyranids battle. I finally threw my hands up and bought a box of Tactical Marines from my local store, and nearly 3 years later I have a 2000pt army of Blood Ravens.

I can relate to Daivd, Play On's big Apocalypse game of Marines vs Tyranids was the first video of theirs I watched and was one of the first 40k videos that finally convinced me to give the hobby another chance after I crashed/burned trying to enter back in early 3rd edition as a kid.
It is now nearly 4 years later, and I own over 5000 points of Deathwatch and a few Imperial side characters (I spend probably too much time on each model brainstorming how I want to customize them before meticulously sculpting/kit-bashing them).

Something to note to. Some people are into this hobby to play on the table. They aren't in this hobby to be a painter. So in those cases your going to see more things like dark washes for recessed areas, dry brushed highlights and two to three colours per piece. With a simple base.
Then you get people that are into the hobby for the lore, their armies can sometimes have really well done leaders or named heroes and really plain units.
What we usually see though on youtube is competition looking pieces, the pieces that take hours and days to finish. With custom bases, with rocks, branches, flowers, water or lava effects. Massive amounts of blending, shadows, highlights, object source lighting, bounce lights, none metallic metal etc and so forth. The people that do stuff like that are usually painting said miniatures for their main jobs or at least for a commission or to win a contest. People need to stop comparing themselves and their minis to these types of people lol.
Nobody just starting out in the hobby is going to wind up painting a work of art the first thing they try to paint. It's a learned skill. Like cooking.
The worst thing someone can do though is not paint whatever they have and feel bad about their skills. You wont get better if you dont put the time in and paint. Like cooking. It all takes time. 🦖

One of the best pieces of advice I can give to someone who thinks they won’t be good enough at painting - 2ft. If you think they look good from 2ft away, then they’re good enough. How often do you really pick up and look closely at an individual models? Meanwhile, on the tabletop they be about 2ft away on average. So that little bit of blending that you think you messed up on? Too far away to see.

I just started a dark angels army. I’ve got 3 blageguard done and a bunch of intersessor on the way. I’m doing a successor chapter with all the same colours themes except that they are dark purple instead of dark green, the deathwing having only some parts of their armour white like in 30k. I really like the result so far. In my head canon all the characters are Risen leading primaris marines. The chapter is called the Honour Guard for their Risen that have stayed honourable even after being called traitor for 10 000 years.
Thanks for reading my comment 😂

Metal works for game sounds, but when the topic is more introspective, the music should take a backseat and not take away the focus from the person speaking, as I was distracted throughout the video by the music.

It’s certainly been a challenge since I mainly play chaos factions and therefore have a ton of trim to do, but it’s also been a great challenge and motivation to get myself hobbying more often! I had pretty much the same attitude towards the hobby. Never thought I'd paint things to be good enough that I could show them to anyone; I practiced on resin minis which I had a lot of (still unpainted), but my early experiments were basically the sort of stuff that Rhodes Academy shows off for a 'do not attempt' showcase. Not that steady with brush, either. And now that I have a few models 'finished' I'm dreading putting the decals onto them or sealing them because 'couldnt I go back and do more work? This will waste the mini, I could fix it more...' My current resolution is that I'll seal them after doing the best I can without wasting weeks on each one, and just use that as a reminder for how my skill changes as I keep painting - leave a number on each mini so I can track which one was in order I painted. Also considering getting a notebook to write down what worked, what didnt, WIP on some specific mini and what I have left to do, and methods I thought looked good but werent needed at the time.
EDIT: I also got started with Space marines and immediately wanted to go for Dreadnoughts and Tanks because vehicles are my favorite part. Even got Iron Father because I thought it'd be thematic... Later learned that he is the ONLY iron hands mini, that Black Templars do better with what I like, and that I like Ultramarine color coding... So now I'm some kind of heretic, with an Iron Hands? army in Ultramarine colors (beginning, only a few painted so far), and no idea if I should pull back from Iron hands!

I was honestly myself surprised when I went to my hobby shop after painting my most of my T'au. I have a slight variation of the Vior'la Sept as my colour scheme mostly adding a bit more Orange to help break up all the white. With making some of the similar looking units having purple instead, so I could tell which unit was which. Mostly who was close range and who was long range.
What surprised me most was people saying "The white looks so good" then asking "How did you get your white to look like that?" I had no idea white was such a hard colour to make work, since I was so new to painting and it was my main colour.
Not to mention people gawking over my Farsight with his translucent green sword. Which was a choice I made because it's a Necron Sword (As I'm told) so I thought it should be green.
I didn't think much of my painting skills but hearing and seeing some of the issues people had with white alone made me realize I did a good job. It's not perfect but I did a good job and made me less ashamed to show them off. It helped me be confident in my ideas even if it isn't the "cannon" colour scheme.

We actually can see a skeleton hand coming out on 1 of the watchers on Lion L's scabbard carrier on the mini! Which makes me think the big skeleton robed figure on the same mini with wings and sword and halo is an ancient watcher in the dark. Which makes me think again, the name Dark Angels is to honor these creatures, these angels in the cloak and shadows, and watchers are the baby Dark Angels that survived. They are nurturing them to full size to use as weapons in the final fight.

I'm very much the same way. Been into 40k since dawn of war 2, but I always said I'd never get the minis because I couldn't do the painting or assembling. I finally gave in when the new csm codex was coming out. I have some stuff and... I'm half right half wrong. I'm not bad at it, I'm actually impressed by the first 2 models I painted. I am however, incredibly slow and I procrastinate a lot and it's easy for me to go a week without even looking at a model. I have the itch to play, I really really want to play some games and I'm sure once I do I'll be able to go back to the hobby portion with no problem. However to play some games, I need to do the hobby portion first..

Nick, that Dread stomping on a Crisis Suit is straight out of War of Secrets novel. You know, the one where the fourth expansion sphere leaders turn on their human vassals. And get the DAs to kill them while they try to wipe out the Angels of Absolution.

Well done David. Love the army, love the sentiment, great work, 10/10.
(but PlayOn, dial back the soundtrack, it was a little distracting. 9/10) 😁

9:35 he does have a point in that. Also during siege of fenris, the dark angels are tricked by the changeling into bombing the planet so when the grey knights arrive on the rock and exposes the changeling they obviously chased after it. But during the chase the changeling who was diguised as azrael stumbled upon a watcher but since the changeling is a daemon it didnt see the watcher as a small hooded figure but rather as a empty void that gave off VERY ominous vibes to the point even the changeling was like " NOPE" and ran full speed away from it all the while the watcher just stood there doing nothing. so yea dont mess with the watchers as they make even deamons shit themself in fear
