I was there, my life was dull, meaningless and going nowhere at the time and l sat there for hours thinking l was going to feel even worse at the end as l was expecting Warwickshire to lose. When we finally got there, l stood in disbelief for a few minutes before going onto the pitch still in a daze. Unbelievable game and l returned 2 years later in another Natwest final win with a B & H cup win in between. I have been back many times since, the last time, 2016 in a very easy win v Surrey, a complete difference to this game. Great days, still have all the winning finals converted from vhs to dvd's so l can enjoy them again.
Travelled down from Perthshire in Scotland for this match to watch with my now late dad and older brother. What a day. Thought it was all lost as Sussex piled up the highest ever NatWest Final total, despite batting first, which was supposed to be the kiss of death back then - early start, dewy pitch etc. Thought it was lost with one over to go too. 15 off 6 was a big ask back then, not so much now in the T20 era. Keep an eye on the Sussex player fielding close in on the off side for the last ball. He's pretty much on the strip before Twose hits the winning runs! I have a lot of sympathy for Sussex fans who must have thought they were odds on to win at half time, but this game signalled the start of Warwickshire's invincible era where we won pretty much everything for the next couple of seasons under the leadership of the great Dermot Reeve. Fantastic years to be a Bear!
Two great captains - remember watching this, thanks for the upload. Dermot Reeve one of my cricket heroes. David Smith looking very classy and Speight attacking upfront Jason Roy like!
I was there, aged 19, and it was an astonishing game. Warwickshire were only ahead in 2 points in the game - a few minutes in when Bill Athey was out, and then the very last ball when Twose only needed to get one run to win. Between those two Sussex absolutely dominated. But Warwickshire never gave up, and there were some awesome performances, particularly Asif Din who scored the fastest century in NatWest final history, despite only hitting 5 boundaries. Every ball, worked into a gap for runs. And then Dermot Reeve in the last over against Franklin Stephenson! I can still picture every shot in my minds eye. Just amazing.
Best game I've ever watched. Speight hitting Munton into the pavilion early on, Lenham's cover drives and brilliant batting by Asif Din and Dermot Reeves. 320 off 60 overs seemed like a huge score then!
I always thought David Smith was a sort of left handed Graham Gooch. Very similar playing style. Unlucky that injuries at inopportune times prevented him building a Test career.
Thanks so much. I enjoyed it immensely. Any more county cricket videos you have would be very much appreciated. Do you have any Sunday League matches from the 94 and 95 seasons?
Any hundred in a Lord's final is to be applauded, but Smith took 162 balls to get there. I think had he batted at the same rate as his teammates who made 221 from the other 198 balls Sussex would have been out of sight and near to 400. Asif Din also scored a hundred, but got there in only 103 balls. That's the match, right there. 10 overs quicker!
I loved county cricket back then, my favorite team was Warwickshire, I used to keep a close tabs on all the players, I reall feel sorry for players like Ed Giddons and Dominick Ostler, Dominic reminded me of Carl Hooper not in style but in terms of potential, he could of been a good player but never showed his true skills, Ed was unlucky, I remember his first test for England and his last test vs the windies in 1999.I remember in commentary Sir Ian Botham kept saying he (Ed) bowled with rat power.
I thought the 1985 Essex/Notts Final was great but this surpassed even that. Sussex thought they’d won the match with that huge total and their fielding didn’t do them any favours.
Ive only just noticed those thieving little toerags racing on at the end to steal whatever they can get their hands on. Some little Herbert stole Reeve's bat.

I was twenty three at the time and remember Dermot Reeve, playing against his former team. The theme tune always impresses me as a cricket fan!

As a Sussex fan this was the most gut wrenching cricket match I have ever watched😢😢😢

30 years today 😢
This is the one domestic cup final that lives in the memory. Back when these games were on the bbc.
Reeve looked dead on his feet in that last over, but somehow found the energy to run like that. Amazing!
I remember this final vividly, i was only 13 at the time - Dermot Reeve was brilliant that day
And that's why Asif got Man of the match
@@MrSadiqfarooqui So because Asif Din got MOTM Dermot wasn't brilliant? You make no sense.
Remember watching this game as a kid on TV, riveting game!

I was there as a Sussex fan and was gutted.
It was great watching that day.
That was everything you could ever want in a one day final.

In another era Martin Speight would have been a very rich man

If he batted at the same rate as Athey and Wells , he still wouldn't be at 100 l now

Saturday 4th September 1993
Thanks for this. Do you have any more cricket videos to upload?
Back when county cricket was great.
Sometimes I forget that Dickie Birds first name is Harold. I saw the 'todays umpires' caption and thought I remember Mervyn, whos this harold?
I thought the 1985 Essex/Notts Final was great but this surpassed even that. Sussex thought they’d won the match with that huge total and their fielding didn’t do them any favours.
45 extras in the Sussex innings! 16 no balls!
15 off 6, in previous years they would have struggled to score 15 off 6 overs
Classic Match in Brian Lara 1996
Was there ever a greater one-day final than this?
No
Asif Din looked about 53 years old here! How old was he?
44
@@georgecurtis5371 Just looked it up, he was 33... Must have had a difficult paper round.
I am 53 in June (23 back then!) Remember this era well.

I'd have enjoyed this but I had to sit and watch that pox badge for an hour
