I think that younger audiences don't appreciate the feat Nigel Mansell achieved in 1992 and 1993. Obviously 1992 was well known as the year where, after 12 years of trying, he finally clinched the world title in F1. However, due to being (to say the least) messed around by Williams even before he clinched the title that year, he got his own back on the team by walking away at the end of 1992. From there, he was contacted by Paul Newman and Carl Haas, the co-owners of Newman/Haas Racing in Indycar, a team capable of challenging for the Indycar title (having helped Michael Andretti, who moved the opposite way to Mansell, going from Indycar to F1, to the Indycar title in 1991). It's hard to overstate how big a story it was for Nigel Mansell, the reigning F1 World Champion, starting out in Indycar. At the season opener in Surfers Paradise, where Mansell made history by becoming the first rookie in the series to clinch pole and the win for their first race, there was a bigger crowd of journalists than the Indy 500. After that dream start, it wasn't all plain sailing, he had a crash in practice at Phoenix that left him unconscious and his back split open internally (which required surgery before he participated in the "Rookie Test" at Indy). Not only did he qualify for Indy, but he led a large amount of the race, ultimately finishing third, but of the remaining races on ovals, he won all of them. These, coupled with consistent performances in races he didn't win, led to him clinching the Indycar title with a race to spare.
This meant that for roughly a week, he was F1 and Indycar champion simultaneously

@@joelrodriguez9611 What's more, of those wins he had on ovals, he achieved one of the best wins of his entire Motorsport career. In Michigan, for the other 500 mile race that year, he was suffering from a stomach illness, being unable to eat or drink because of the illness he had. Despite this, he qualified second fastest to his team mate, Mario Andretti, and he went on to win the race by a lap or more over the whole field. This result, coupled with his Penske rivals having a bad weekend, was a huge step towards the Indycar title he went on to win

My favorite Indy story is probably the 1994 500. Penske found a loophole, and he sent out in secret to build his loophole engine. Nicked named the beast, he had the engineers working by candle light as not to raise the electricity bill. During the day he would have two guys fly on Concorde to England to grab more parts, and fly back on Concorde, all in a day. The push rods were like 2 inches long, which for pushrods are very short
It was estimated that the Beast had 200hp on everyone else, and if you look up the 1994 500 on RUclips. When the green flag waves, it's like everyone else is still jockeying

I don't know about you guys, but '87 was my favorite race. Watching Al Unser Sr. win his 4th 500 after starting the month without a ride was unforgettable. He stepped in for Danny Ongais after he crashed in practice and was out due to injuries. Al Sr. struggling to qualify with the car. Had to pull the previous year's car that was put in a hotel lobby in PA out to run. Got it up to speed and qualified midpack. Ran back part of the top 5 for most of the day. Found himself 3rd behind Mario Andretti and Roberto Guerrero. Mario dominates the whole day and then breaks with 23 laps to go. Guerrero inherits the lead and has a lap lead over Unser, but stalls the car repeatedly when pitting for gas because it was stuck in I believe 6th gear. Unser unlaps himself and then leads the last few laps to victory. This whole race was the most Indy thing ever. The track picks the winner. Al went from no ride to a 4th 500 title.

While the race and pageantry mean so much to the general race fan, I think people
outside of Indianapolis don't realize how much the race means for us locals. For us
the entire month of May is a giant holiday where we anticipate race day like other
people anticipate Christmas throughout December. The speedway is such an integral part of our city and culture. The month of May is truly something I wish everyone outside of Indy could get to experience because people decorate with race flags and you get the Indy Grand Prix, Indy 500 qualifying, carb day, the Indy 500 parade, and to cap off the month you get the 500. It's a fantastic month where an entire city is engulfed in racing fever.

2017, when Alonso decided to skip the Monaco GP and try the Indy 500, I was rooting for him soooo much. He did it incredible well, and was his first ever oval race, and was leading a good chunk of laps and was there in closing positions for the victory until the Honda give up in him... once more (damn you, Honda...).
He's the last F1 champion that tried, and I think he was the first since the nineties (Mansell? Fittipaldi? I don't remember who was the last one before Alonso). His shoot in the triple crown was really encouraging, but it's a shame that no one seems to be interested. Also, it's amazing how much Alonso has tried in the motorsport world apart from F1: Indy 500, WEC/LeMans 24h, Dakar... the man is a beast. Four days of time trials over 2 weekends. Pole Day, 2nd Day, 3rd Day and Bump Day. The car qualified not the driver. Each car got 3 attempts over the 4 days.
This is where it got weird. Usually, 33 cars wouldn’t set speeds (complete a qualifying run) on pole day for various reasons and we move on to 2nd day qualifying. Everybody who sets a speed on 2nd day qualifies behind everyone who set a speed on pole day, regardless of speed. Let’s say pole day ends with 17 cars having set a speed and someone is on pole with a speed of 225mph. 2nd Day qualifying begins and someone else sets a speed of 228mph. That guy now qualifies 18th, behind the slowest of Pole Day’s 17 qualifiers (slowest qualifier at 215mph). This holds true for each successive day of qualifying until the field is full (33 cars have set speeds).
Then the bumping began. Each car got 3 attempts to qualify, but if your car set the 33rd fastest speed in the field, and then someone set a faster speed, that car was “bumped” from the field and was now ineligible to make any further qualifying attempts. Teams could avoid this by withdrawing their car’s qualifying speed and making another attempt, but the risk there is they don’t make your car through tech inspection and fail to make a new run.
Now, it was the 33rd fastest car that got bumped, not necessarily the car then sitting in 33rd position. If the slowest speed in the 33 car field is the guy who qualified 17th on pole day (ahead of the car with the fastest speed in the field) and a car makes a run on bump day of 220mph, it is the 17th place (and slowest) car that is bumped. The car that just made the run will still have to start behind all the cars that qualified on previous days, but is now in the field.
