Jenson was a master class back then, that high downforce setup turned out great for them, he had traction on a track no-one had any and his wet driving skills that day put him up there with great rainmasters such as Senna and Schumacher. Back then we could only watch F1 on satellite TV in South Africa and that was one of the rare occasions I could watch it live...
2011 was the third season i had watched, JB's championship in 2009 being my first and he was my favourite driver for a long time!! I still remember every single bit of this race, it was incredible, that last lap was insane, it was unimaginable?! Hands down one of the best races in modern F1, an absolute classic that every F1 needs to see!
Coulthard and Brundle's commentary about the red shouldered bird was magical! "David what type of bird is that?" ... "Why that's a red shouldered black bird Martin!" 🤣
Remember watching this race with my dad, we’d watched it all the way through including the stoppage and Martin Brundle and David Coulthard’s bird commentary. The tension as the last few laps unfolded and when Button overtook Vettel we both jumped off the sofa cheering. A race that we’ll both never forget and rightly so.
I was there with my father, at the exit of the hairpin, under the trees on the hill. The hill became muddy quite fast and everyone was shoving their umbrellas into each other's face. Everyone was checking the weather on their smartphones, and quickly the rumor that the race couldn't possibly be restarted got around the general access areas. My father and I decided to go back home rather than risk being wet and miserable for nothing. When the red flag was called, we had enough time to take public transit back home before the race restarted.
Another great race of Button. I'm a huge fan of him and if there wasn't RedBull he'd surely gained more world driver titles. Shame that the McLaren started to suck from 2013 onwards and the start of the hybrid era so he didn't had anymore chance since his last win in Brazil 2012. He may "only" gained 8 wins for McLaren but it's overlooked how many podiums he reached from 2010-2012 and often was in the title hunt till the last 3 or 2 races
Since I never was able to catch the races live, I used to download them on Sunday night. I remember being like, "WHY IS THIS GP FILE SIZE SO F&%*ING BIG!?" 🤬 It was worth it. 😎 Thanks for taking me on a trip down memory lane. ✌
Thank you for mentioning Schumi's drive, he awesome that day, after he passed the Massa/Kobayashi battle (without anyone shouting "through goes Schumacher" in an overexcited manner like Hamilton at Silverstone) he was actually catching Vettel before the final Safety Car. As much as I have to take my hat off to JB, I will curse that Safety Car to my dying day as "My Michael" would definitely got a podium that day and maybe just maybe would have made the top step.... #keepfightingmichael love you Schumi x
I’ll come back to this later, when I can watch it properly, but Josh, know that my love for your channel just exploded. Jenson Button is one of my all-time favourite F1 drivers, so knowing that you’re covering arguably one of his best ever races is wonderful to see. :)
I always wonder what Hamilton would have done that day without that confusion with Button. He was *so* much faster than Button before they collided - which is why Jenson had been told to let him pass and was making that unusual move on the straight that caught Lewis out.
I remember watching that race live. When it was red-flagged, I decided to watch until the end, but a friend thought the race was over and didn't watch the race. When I told you the race was incredible, he asked me if I enjoyed watching cars racing behind the SC. When I told him the race was indeed restarted and was a blast, he literally hit his TV. It was intense for the pilots, but also for the viewers. One of those one of a kind races.
Fond memories of this race. My Dad & I left the house just before the race started to go and see Senna at the cinema. When we returned the race was still going on 😂 I no longer follow F1 but love your channel Josh. Your videos always unlock some special memories.
I was in hospital post major operation when this race happened. Watched the whole affair doped up on morphine and greatly enjoying the adventures of the ducks swimming down the track as I didn’t have a lot else to do, and back when F1 was still on free to air tv. That ending was definitely worth it though.
Really liked that ambient final song during the end of the video (not the one during the credits, before it). Josh been killing it lately with the finale songs on these videos
Circuit Gilles Villeneuve is my favorite track hands down. I mean it helps Ive been there a few times and walked the track and everything and the island itself is a great experience even when nobodys racing or in winter. Its fast, its narrow, it has hard breaking points, multiple overtaking points for the brave, it flows and of course that famous wall to catch out anyone and everyone taking a snooze on the final straight. Simply an amazing track a stones throw away from old montreal. And when theres weather its even better to watch
If you want a example of how Jenson Button well and truly stood alone in these kinds of conditions, I strongly recommend you check out the Hungarian GP later that same year. On-and-off rain all day, the track seemingly bone dry one lap, then greasier than your average politician the next. Up and down the grid, drivers and engineers alike losing their heads over what tyres to be on at any moment. All except Button. He mastered the unpredictable conditions, kept his cool, and cruised through to take the second of his 3 wins in 2011, on his 200th GP start, at the circuit where he claimed his first ever win.
They just replayed the whole race on TSN here in Canada the other day. I had a feeling I had heard Jenson Button won the race, but for the longest time, I couldn't figure out how it was possible.
What I remember about this grand prix is Kamui Kobayashi's chance of a podium...he was at least in 2nd place until his tires gave up.....as a massive Kobayashi fan...that was painful to see him losing the podium....
This is rhe most memorable race for me. I remember nt buddy and i watching it all day at his house, ans both of us jumping around his living room when Button made that pass. I'll always remember that day.
I was there for this race. The first, and only, F1 race I have attended in person. When Vettel went wide at turn 6, the entire place went nuts. We were in turn 8/9 and we were still cheering when Button came through in the lead. After sitting hours in the rain... to have a result like that. It was electrifying.
I still remember this time. Had just finished highschool and in these months was preparing for college in my country. Good times. I was recording this race and wanted to watch it later, when I had more time. My uncle told me the final result (that Button won the race) before I had a chance to watch it. But after witnessing Button's and Schumi's performance, I didn't mind that. This is one of the best races in F1-history.
I was 52 at the time and, being a huge Jenson Button fan, I was completely out of my mind, jumping on the couch, yelling like a madman, when he took the lead of that unbelievable race. My kids, who were already in bed (it was around 10 PM in Belgium) jumped off their bed and came down with my wife, believing something terrible had happened... But at half-race, when Alonso and Jenson tangled and he exited the pits dead last, I was truly desperate. Then he appeared back in the points position and I thought "better than nothing". When he passed Webber and Schumacher to take 2nd position, I was like "take it easy, Jenson, it's already wonderful, don't ruin everything" but he turned a dead ear and went on to drive even faster, cutting Vettel's advance by 1-2 seconds a lap until he grew so big in the German's mirrors that he made a tiny mistake and Button breezed by, thank you very much! Certainly the best Canadian GP ever, arguably the best race of the 21st century, and probably in the top 5 of the greatest races ever.
This is one of the few GPs that I still actually remember watching (I have been watching F1 for almost 30 years by now) and I loved it. I was really sad when they introduced the 2h rule soon afterwards.
This race has to be one of the only ones I can think of where it was worth the wait of the huge delay midway through. I started watching F1 full time in 2011 and this race was the one to make me fall mad in love for the sport. Sadly now that love is gone and there'll need to be a similar race to Canada 2011 to make me feel that old intense passion I once had at least just one more time. The feeling would be wonderful.
i do love a good canadian gp just something about that track.. its just one of the races i can't wait for each year and its great to run on in every GP game, there's very few other tracks like it with the speed and the rhythm it has

Being a Jenson Button fan that race had me all over the place emotionally. The amount of times he'd found himself at the back to only come through right at the end, I was bouncing around my living room like a banshee lol 😆😆😆😆

Whatver happens..im definitely getting a subscription to surfshark after this video ends...josh has some convincing power he does not realise. Good on ya mate... Hopefully this gets u some commission.
For me, it was I think the second best race I've ever witnessed. It had everything, and so much tension for so long. Of course, the only race which I think beats it is the Brazilian GP in 2008, but while that wins for overall excitement, it was mostly crammed into just a few moments at the end, whereas the Canadian GP just ahd everything for hours. It even had a moment where David Coulthard, whilst commentating with Martin Brundle, described a bird as having red "shoulders" while he scratched around for something to talk about.
Probably the strangest Canadian Grand Prix was the 1973 race. Another wet race, it was also the first time a Safety Car was deployed, it also led to absolute chaos in the timing and scoring. Nobody was 100% sure who actually won the race, only being decided when each and every team handed in their own lap charts to try and work out a winner
I remember watching this live. The TV wasn't following Jenson for the longest time, he wasn't mentioned. I noticed Jenson moving up the places and I said to my dad 'watch Jenson', he said 'why?', I said 'because he's doing well and he looks like he's going to do something really special'. Soon after my dad wandered off. I watched him moving up the places and still, for the longest time, no mention in commentary or shots of his car... Eventually it was all over and my dad wondered back in and said 'Who won'. I told him. Reaction: 'Oh'.
I remember having to listen to this race on the stairs cause I was like 7 and was supposed to be asleep. I was a massive JB fan and I'm still kinda pissed I couldn't watch 😭

I remember that race vividly. I was on Team Jenson then. Where I worked, my teammates all watched F1. I started watching F1 a few years earlier as I wanted something to talk to my co-workers about other than work gossip or computers (I work in IT). I liked Jenson from his interview on Top Gear, so I was his fan from that. I came into work the next day and said "THAT is why I like Jenson Button. Holy crap!"
Remember watching this in the UK when I was 12 and my Mum sending me to bed during the red flag because I had school the next day and I had school the next day... Glad I didn't miss anything
IIRC, there were suggestions that Button, accounting for the conditions, and knowing he had more fuel than needed to finish the race, was running a higher fuel mixture, as such towards the end, had a lighter car.
This wasn’t just the best Canadian Grand Prix ever, I believe it’s the best Grand Prix ever. It had everything and the fact the winner went from last to first and to take it on the last lap. It’s above anything I have seen or read in the past 40 years. The saddest part is now with the time regulations, this race wouldn’t of happened. We waited what seemed like hours for the rain to clear, from recollection some TV stations gave up broadcasting.
People forget how great of a driver he was overall. He won’t be mentioned in the same breath as the likes of Vettel or Verstappen because he wasn’t fast-tracked into race-winning cars from an early age, and admittedly, he won’t be remembered as a driver who could drag a midfield car kicking and screaming into the sharp end of the grid like Schumacher or Alonso. To me, Button deserves to be mentioned alongside the likes of Hunt, Mansell, and Hill, as a driver who had to fight hard to get into F1, and fight even harder to stay there, and when the opportunity to win a title finally came along, grabbed it with both hands and didn’t let go.
I watched this race when it was broadcast live and could not believe what I was looking at. When Vettel made that mistake, I just started screaming with joy and might have woken up my neighbours at 11 pm (CET). Great times...
I remember my friends had booked for us to see Xmen First Class that day so I had to leave like 15 minutes before the race began, watched the movie, came home and the race was still on 😂

I remember being suprised this race came in six parts and took a long ass time to download, but it was worth every second of it.
Could you do a video on that brilliant run by Shane van Gisbergen in NASCAR
Being a Jenson Button fan that race had me all over the place emotionally. The amount of times he'd found himself at the back to only come through right at the end, I was bouncing around my living room like a banshee lol 😆😆😆😆
I remember watching this race live... It ended up waaay after 2am in Poland, and I didn't missed a moment 😂😂😂😂
5:31 that Montagny joke is wonderful lmao. Also this race is a favorite for me cause JB is my 2nd favorite driver and Sebastian Vettel is my no. 1. Great times
The Canadian sports network, TSN, is re-running classic Canadian GPs this week. 2011 airs to-morrow night.
Red shouldered blackbird is a phrase that still sticks in my head.
You are about to make a new impossible win video for Shane Van Gisbergen just won a NASCAR cup race
I remember having to listen to this race on the stairs cause I was like 7 and was supposed to be asleep. I was a massive JB fan and I'm still kinda pissed I couldn't watch 😭
Chur bol, 1st season proper into F1! Thank you for being the info, the catch up, the reason I can probs go Champ for Champ w/ Seb. All the humor; straight up KIWI ++++ LESHHHHGOOOO UP REVELL!!
Josh, please do a video on this Week’s NASCAR Winner
I remember that race vividly. I was on Team Jenson then.
Where I worked, my teammates all watched F1. I started watching F1 a few years earlier as I wanted something to talk to my co-workers about other than work gossip or computers (I work in IT). I liked Jenson from his interview on Top Gear, so I was his fan from that.
I came into work the next day and said "THAT is why I like Jenson Button. Holy crap!"
Dude, Shane Van Gisbergen just won the NASCAR Chicago Street race. New video idea maybe?
THIS^^^
Remember watching this in the UK when I was 12 and my Mum sending me to bed during the red flag because I had school the next day and I had school the next day... Glad I didn't miss anything
"Over 4 freaking hours."
NASCAR: 4 hours? Yeah, 'bout average.
I remember this race it was golden for the racing and the worst for the waiting
I remember watching last laps of this race as a kid and being upset that Michael didn't keep the second place.
1:28 that's a beautiful leaderboard, fond memories, good times. I was a big fan of Vettel, Webber and Massa
This video was brilliant. One of your best - and I've yet to see one I didn’t enjoy.
Hi Josh. Saw you in usf2000 today so cool👍👍
I remember sitting through all of this.
Imagine if someone started watching F1 and this was the first race they saw. That's exactly what I did lmao
IIRC, there were suggestions that Button, accounting for the conditions, and knowing he had more fuel than needed to finish the race, was running a higher fuel mixture, as such towards the end, had a lighter car.
I juat noticed how the 2011 mclarn had the same slope down back end of the side pod as the curren aston martin
People forget how legendary JB was in the rain
I was in southern France when this race started. When it finished, i was in northern England. Thats how long on it went for
great video!
2011 Canadian GP is my most favourite race I have ever watched
There are stories that teams would use Jenson Button's tyre choices during the race to dictate their own pit strategy!
As an Aussie, I can already tell you are on the SVG Nascar win grind. Respect to the kiwis
I watched this race when it was broadcast live and could not believe what I was looking at. When Vettel made that mistake, I just started screaming with joy and might have woken up my neighbours at 11 pm (CET). Great times...
I remember my friends had booked for us to see Xmen First Class that day so I had to leave like 15 minutes before the race began, watched the movie, came home and the race was still on 😂
C'mon baby Stroll, make Canadia proud.
