i beat this game when it was released in the 80’s. Then again a year later. Even w/ Nintendo Power the walkthrough was brutal & took forever. No internet made this game a Beast.
Wow, respect!! This was my first Zelda game when I was a kid, but I never beat it until recently when my brother bought me an NES Classic Edition, and I went back and finally beat it last month. So my curiosity got the best of me, and this morning I was looking at a few speedruns on this game, and I found this vid. Nice job doing it without the candle.
I got this game when I was in high school, my cousin didnt want it and gave it to me. I never made it through death mountain and didnt pick it up again until about 5 years ago when I decided it was time to finally beat it. I ended up loving it so much that I ran through it about a dozen times and got it down pretty solid.
This is actually amazing. No glitch, hammer rush? Whole game in the dark. Not sure why he didn't get the near heart near the water palace while he was waiting for xp. Besides that, an amazing accomplishment.
Awesome run! I’ve always found it interesting that the original princess Zelda and princess Peach were brunettes, but became blondes in the later games.
When I was a kid I always had to use the fairy business to get through the lava fields leading up to the last board-else I’d always get knocked into a lava pit by the baddies. I feel a little less incompetent knowing that even pretty good players use the fairy power quite a bit. You’re a far better player than I ever was-I would rip the hair out of my head down to the follicles trying to do all those caves without the candle. Good work!
It's a really good trick to walk into the "overworld enemy" on the same spot as the, what should we call it, so you override and you get the less difficult challenge. Extra good when walking to the Great Palace!
now that jumping guy at 58:45 didn't get annoying like in the deathless runs.... they just know it :P several deaths, yet a PB, wow congrats on the PB :) will we see more Z1 and Z2 again at some point? if i had my own place to stay i could plan out my sleeping better, and have some stream time might be more than a year before i get my own place, though... so yeah :( but hey, nice to see you on YT again!
Can you save and quit right after getting a dungeon item or do you have to exit the dungeon first? 46:00 This part makes me feel like I'm a garden gnome trespassing on the property of lizard people, it looks like lawn with a wooden plank background
I came here because I read a letter in an old Nintendo power magazine about a kid allegedly completing the entire game in 42 minutes. On an NES. I knew that kid was full of it lol
"No Major Glitches" "Use of Up+A and *dying* allowed" Jesus, imagine considering dying in a video game a glitch, even if it IS a deathwarp. I guess some people really are that purist, huh? Or am I missing something here?
So you got the fairy to skip the monsters in the first cave by start to get the magic container. Does that new route save a lot of time? I've never seen that route
I’m sure he didn’t miss that, but speedrunners of zelda 2 tend to only pick up jars and bags when they know that they’re gonna need them before the next fixed jar or level-up. Especially blue jars, since they rarely make a difference in a run where you neither pick up the shield-spell or life-spell.
why not? ironically, this was one of the biggest complaints of the game, that you start from the beginning upon death and it takes too long to walk back. no so much eh?
Getting the candle does take more time than you’d think. The benefit of seeing in caves don’t make up for the time lost by getting the candle. And not to mention, in the valley of death leading up to the last palace the most dangerous enemies are invisible even with the candle unless you get yet another item (the cross) in palace 6.
These "invisible eyes" are so annoying haha! Personally I'm not good enough (yet) to skip the cross from palace 6. The "last town" (between palace 6 and the last palace) got these "invisible eyes" that you only can see with the cross. So is it the same when walking on the lava to the last castle? I've never tried that without the cross :(
This man made it farther in 30 minutes than I did in 30 years
That’s pathetic. I made it to Shadow Link every time as a ten year old, just didn’t know the corner trick/cheat.

Glad you enjoyed this! It's one of my favorite speedrun categories on the NES

This is my favorite Zelda game to watch.
Man, this the house music is so good.
I used to have this and Zelda 1, never beat them. Maybe it’s time.
The run by Slackanater is an eldritch abomination. Don’t get me wrong, I loved it, but this run is a breath of fresh air!
glad to see you uploading Z2 again!
Came Here fromm a 17min "Speedrun"
That was a Kind of a mess GlitchRun. This Here is much better.
Lack stay killing it🎉🎉
Imagine playing this for the first time and not knowing about the candle...geez

but hey, nice to see you on YT again!
I first beat this game when I was seven or eight- half of my motivation was the idea that I might be too young to beat such a mature game.
My fave nes game
What is considered a minor glitch
“That fairy was pretty clutch”.
Dude waited all day to use that word.😄
Go Steelers!! Hey man I have been watching your speedruns for a while. They are awesome keep it up. Are you from PA? I'm from Uniontown.
Originally Washington, PA. Thanks for watching!
This game gave me PTSD as a kid. I'm fully redeemed but yah.
Can you save and quit right after getting a dungeon item or do you have to exit the dungeon first?

Somehow I beat this as a kid on the NES. I tried playing it recently on the Switch and I end up running out of lives on the final dungeon. Ugh.
At least you got to start at the beginning of that dungeon!
Greatrun ...u had to use game genie infinate lives last time i beat this game🤔
I came here because I read a letter in an old Nintendo power magazine about a kid allegedly completing the entire game in 42 minutes. On an NES. I knew that kid was full of it lol
Hah which issue? I need to check that
Great time. GG
I got a over 15 year old save file i still havent beat. Cant get the final level
How in the heck were you able to get through death mountain with no candle lol
@Lack .... around 7:40, did you leave and re enter the cave to make the red axe man disappear?
Yes
Oddly enough, this is the game you SHOULD have cheated on...
"No Major Glitches"
"Use of Up+A and *dying* allowed"
Jesus, imagine considering dying in a video game a glitch, even if it IS a deathwarp. I guess some people really are that purist, huh? Or am I missing something here?
Well there's another category which doesn't allow dying. Since I ran that one also, I put the comment in there to make sure it was known
@@LackAttack Ahhh OK, that makes sense.
Wish Up+A was possible on Game & Watch: Zelda 35th anniversary :)
How did you already meet bagu?
So you got the fairy to skip the monsters in the first cave by start to get the magic container. Does that new route save a lot of time? I've never seen that route
This is a different category, which allows for up+a. Getting that container later does save time
Lack when u kill some enemies in DM with no candle it sounds like they drop magic on some kills....did u miss that or am I wrong?
I’m sure he didn’t miss that, but speedrunners of zelda 2 tend to only pick up jars and bags when they know that they’re gonna need them before the next fixed jar or level-up. Especially blue jars, since they rarely make a difference in a run where you neither pick up the shield-spell or life-spell.
It's probably a stupid question, but how do you reset the game without dying, like you did? Is it an emulator thing?
press up+A on the second controller when on the spell menu
No major glitches
Not a fan of the skipping back to the beginning strategy.
why not? ironically, this was one of the biggest complaints of the game, that you start from the beginning upon death and it takes too long to walk back. no so much eh?
You would think as fast as he can go through these rooms that it would benefit to pick up the candle just to be able to see

this is too much like metroid.
That's a new take
