Seems everyone has a story of loss. My Uncle Donald, my dad's brother, was killed in an airpolane crash in WWII--this song reminds me of him. He used to call me his sweetheart when I was only 4. I know my father thought of him when he heard this song. It's lovely that it means so much to so many--it make a community of family.

I have a son named Daniel and I had to send him on a plane to see his Dad every summer and I would listen to this song on the way back from the airport and cry. I know thats not what this song is about but it still touched me.

My older brother is Daniel too. After my brother went away to college, I'd hear this song and cry. Then he moved to another state, and the song still can make me cry. It still makes me melancholy. Hands down, this is Sir Elton's most moving song.

Just to shed some light on this . . . A member of the audience (the guy in the red shirt at the end) had a best friend named Daniel who died in a car accident (I think).
That song always makes him think of his friend and he asked Elton if he would play for him. It was so moving!

I remember this episode: I wish they have shown the audience member who requested this song. He requested the song because Daniel was the name of his brother, who died young and tragically. He said this song would forever mean so much to him, and would Sir Elton please consider playing it ?... He graciously agreed, and when the camera panned back to the guy's face in the audience, he was crying by the end.
