One technique I've tried a few times, and ALOT of it comes from Stanley Kubricks' style of directing is really giving the actor "free reign" and doing a lot of takes so the actor isn't "acting" the role...they're "being" the role which I think helps them internalize who that character is. Then they know when I ask for "more anger" or "more vulnerable" or just "more interesting" they have that internalization to draw from.
I think that’s a great approach if you have enough money to be able to shoot that way. Most independent filmmakers have to shoot five or more pages a day, and that severely hampers the directors ability to give the actors the free reign you suggested.
Hey Jason, thanks for this! This video is very educational, informative, and to the point! These are all great tips! I look forward to seeing more of your videos! You just earned a new subscriber! :)
It'll be nice to address some unconventional things also, like directors such as Robert Bresson who worked with non actors and had a rather dry and unique movie language. Essentially, a way of acting should emerge from movie language that you choose. That's the starting point of working with actor imo.
Hey Jason my future goal is to be an Film Director, besides Entrepreneur I want to learn about directing actors I want to gained skills , I want to learn how to direct actors make 💰 by making my own films. So I want a future in Film Directing having my own production. I want to take lessons so I can get my degree in film directing
Yes - I produced an entire series that includes: • How to build a business plan • How to raise money from investors • How to manage money on set • How to develop the shooting schedule • Preparing an air-tight budget • Working with vendors • How to hire the crew • Working with SAG-AFTRA • How to start a production company Each of these lessons include a 20-30 minute video, downloadable forms, and illustrated companion guides, and it's all included in FilmSkills Unlimited.
Do you ever use a spectrometer? If so how often? I’ve been flirting around with the idea of buying one and I’m close to pulling the trigger, I just need to make it make sense ! I love the class by the way !
@@FilmSkills which meter would you recommend I get if I’m just starting out? I would only need it to balance color temperature on set! I was thinking of getting the sekonic c700 instead of the 800
All very good, but the video is really about directing BAD or POOR actors. Good actors will have already discovered a LOT of what you recommend telling them. They should already know where they've been before the scene, their motivations, the subtext and so on. Only beginners or poor actors will not have thought these things out beforehand.
Yes and no. Yes that good actors have already figured out those things. No because there is no objective truth for those things, and different actors will have different interpretations from each other and from the director. So direction with good actors still needs to happen to get everyone on the same page, performing in the "same scene" and in the "same movie". Where the actor thinks their character was before the scene, and what the director thinks, may turn out to be VERY different.
Well things in a scene can be re-written, and an actor will ask or be told where the director has thought about the scenes. Hence them being an actor and not the director (unless they do both for the scene). The director is literslly giving them directions through the scene! It’s not about the actor being new or ”bad”. You will see this in the behind the scenes for big movies too with very skilled actors, they will listen to those minor directions too. It’s about this, the director’s vision! :) And not the other way around, the actor’s vision. Notice also how tons of actors say ”you can have an imagine in your head of how to do a scene and the director takes it somewhere else than what the actor thought would happen for the scenes during reading the script for a movie and after that the edit part comes in and it’s a new thing again”. Your comment seem to more be bitter, not really insightful and mostly lazed with someone who never got their dream of being part of movie making. Ps. You can still catch that dream, buddy❤
