Great commentary, Tony. I've preordered the A7iv and am looking forward to shooting video with it. While it doesn't have the quality and capabilities of the FX3 and A7Siii, I still think I can capture some good video with it, especially with the 10-bit 4K that comes with it. For myself, I don't shoot a lot of slow motion so I'm not concerned with the 4K crop in 60fps. Thanks again for chiming in on this camera. I always value your input.

    1080p 120fps would be great in 10bit instead of 8bit :(

Noob question, but would this camera be good for product broll videos? As well as product reviews? I don't think rolling shutter should be in issue correct? Thanks in advance

With the super 35 crop and 60p capability the rolling shutter issue should be diminished for slow motion broll, which I think you're talking about? Handheld operation or fast moving subject in 24/25p in full width is where the rolling shutter artifacts will be most apparent. Even so I would say the better cameras for video are a7siii/fx3.

patiently waiting for sony to release a 10 bit capable a6xxx series camera. I prefer s35 since i get deeper depth of field with the same fov and f stop.

Any Tips for How to avoid Rolling Shutter? What are the not do for Rolling Shutter?

    • @TonyDae
      @TonyDae  2 года назад +1

Best way to avoid rolling shutter artifacts is to have the camera set on a tripod and little movement in the shot. An interview will not show much rolling shutter for example, but handheld or panning shots of vertical subjects win exhibit artifacts if the rolling shutter is slower. Cameras liked the fx3 and Arri cams have very fast rolling shutter so they don't show really show artifacts at all even when panning quickly whereas as slower rolling shutter cameras will.
You can also try using super35 or faster frame rates as that can give you a faster rolling shutter but that is not always an option.

@@TonyDae Nice tips overall, I would also add some cheesy tips that has been useful in niche situations to me:
1- If you're in need of a fast pan of a vertical subject, try shooting in vertical, it might be worth the crop to 16:9 (4K vertical to approx. 2160*1270 when rotated to 16:9 horizontal) or even implement it as a creative decision leaving it at 4K vertical.
2- Rolling shutter is, imo, less noticiable in wide lenses.
3- Using any type of crop mode (Clear image zoom in Sony A6XXX series for example), provides a faster read due to a reduced sensor, therefore reducing the RS.
4- It can also be corrected in Premiere/AE up to a point with dedicated effects.

how is the fx3 better than a1 for video? the lab test says that the fx3 just like a7siii does a lot of denoising inside the camera which makes the latitude of recovery worse and the image softer . the a1 does not or very minimal

Price point, top handle accessory, button layout, zoom rocker, tallies, built in fan unit, lots of things.
Bare bones IQ in a head to head test is not the only thing I look at when I decide on a camera. Its not even in the first few most important things for me. Its about "in the middle" of my list of importance since most cameras today provide good enough IQ for what I do.
Regarding shadow recovery, whatever there is as a bonus from the A1 will not be relevant enough for me to justify spending more for it or sacrificing what I get from the fx3.
Regarding denoising, that is something you are going to get with any of these cameras shooting the XAVC-S codecs and honestly whatever the complaints are about it don't matter for me since I'll be denoising in post anyways. I don't shoot narratives, I shoot video that winds up on streaming in HD.
Personally I am fine with the denoise since it saves me a step in post, but having the option to turn it off completely by providing us with XAVC-I/L .mxf codecs would be nice and frankly, should be included with any FX camera, thus why it is in my list of demands. Whether the A1 is any better in this regard... I would have to do my own side by side test in 4k to determine this. I don't need an 8K camera.... yet.
