No color space conversion?! LOG isn't linear. You can just add contrast and saturation if you want the best results. Also, you should be setting the while balance off of an 18% grey card before you roll. Using the eye dropper is a poor, poor, substitute.
I’ve now owned both and come to the decision that the FX3 was more of what I needed. As a one man band it ticked all the boxes. I was fan boying hard over the RED for years and when I finally got it I realized sometimes for my projects smaller is better. Ironically I sold the red for no loss and I’m going for the FX6 with a bunch of anamorphics and g lenses as my final camera for a while
The Sony FX3 is an absolutely brilliant camera, incredible image quality and great overall features in such a compact form factor and at a very reasonable price point. Great job, greetings
Way too Sony biased throughout the review. Of course there are huge improvements but they’re totally different cameras for different workflows as you alluded to. Colorists would much prefer the R3D files. Lowlight, AF, run and gun goes to the Sony of course. Usability in post processing if used correctly on set goes to the Komodo/Gemini. Much more color space (16-bit!). They also win in image quality. Also confused why the colorist wasn’t using DaVinci. I understand this was of course just a fun side by side comparison but your comments throughout the video were very strongly biased towards the FX3. Just makes it awkward for the viewers. At 5:40 is one to note and 20:20 you can tell the colorist doesn’t fully agree the color rolloff is superior in the FX3. I don’t mean to bash or anything it was just the first review I’ve ever seen on RUclips where it felt like you were manipulating the story. Like you wanted a certain outcome for the video so your comments were pushing for that. I do appreciate the time you took to put this together
Thanks for the comments. Not manipulating in any way. In actuality they were very impressed with the FX3 as I was. I went into this thinking the same as you did, but came out definitely surprised. While we wanted this test to be more accurate with the same lens on both cameras we didn’t have the adapters available. End result is the FX3 had a bit more of that video look vs the Red mainly due to lens, but less work on the Sony colors vs Red. The colorist is very familiar with Red and predominately works with the files.
I know there's a steady theme here about having a cinema look vs a digital look, but man when you have the side x side x side screenshot at 20:17.... Man that Sony looks SO sharp and clean that it almost makes the reds look blurry!!! In my opinion, TOO soft. I know that can be manipulated in post. But I think sharp is sexy personally. I'm sick of walking shows like walking dead and they are so grainy it turns my eye off (again just personal opinion). Thanks for the vid. I've rented the fx3 once, and used a friends once, I'm about to purchase.
One thing that is rarely pointed out in these reviews is the flexibility of files in post. Both will give you a good end result, no question. BUT, the RED camera being RAW data will ALWAYS give you far more flexibility and creativity in post (Exposure, white balance, saturation, color grading). The question the end user has to ask themselves - is - is it needed for my project? That's the real question.
Exposing red correctly is important. Traffic light system works super well to have an indication of what your shadow and highlight info will be like. Watching the digital sharp clinical look of the Sony has a place for sure in short form and social media. Super cool. Clean and as you also used nice sterile photography lenses on the sony. It is however fatiguing on the eye to watch for longer periods telling stories. Just not aesthetically pleasing. You used cinema lenses on the red that have very different sharpness and colour. Also shooting on the darker setep and understanding how iso works with red can change the noise level dramatically, the result are controlable as well. You touched on grading. Comparing the two would be closer if you shot all in araw or all in prores and all with the same lens.
Ah! The perfect videographer to ask… I’ll be shooting some theater scenes in NYC and I’m trying to see IF I can get by with a Sony FX3 given that the lighting can be highly controlled… It’s not only is it about the higher rental cost of the the FX6 or Komodo ecosystem… but the size of the files written out demanding (10?) more NAS storage for editing… The deciding factor may just be that the final product is only intended for smart phones or tablet… maybe a laptop? (There’s also some question about shooting under the theaters tungsten lights or (and?) my Aputure LEDS…)
Digital look or cinematic look comparisons everywhere. In Korea too. Similar dissuasion went on one of film forum in Korean website. What do you guys take on Cinematic look? Significant difference between mirrorless(like fx3) vs cinema cameras though all these digital camera. To me FX3 has little flatter look (which is defined as digital look) where as Red has more depth like more three dimensional (i guess more filmic) not due to lens beside colour, curve whatever they are… That’s why Fx3 can’t easily achieve that more cinematic look even with cinema lens and lights set up though Fx3 image is already great. My needs is more towards mirrorless as im not dp.
Wtf is that grade, you are supposed to use the correct conversion LUTs, just tinkering with the levels and *especially* saturation isn’t going to cut it.
That RED actually offers good value given its workflow speed per output it provides. Sony's FX3 is a bit ambitious for the price or the A7S3 is just that good. Good comparison!
@@TECH360TV yeah, tbh the FX6 is more well-rounded for either run-and-gun or studio set-up and that's what I would've bought if I hadn't pre-ordered the A7S3. RED's get expensive fast when you kit it out. 🙄. Ah, to have endless cash 🌞
The lack of knowledge by the guy in the white shirt is disturbing. Kudos to the intelligent and experienced other guy who owns the Reds for not even getting into it. "The FX3 has more gradiation" if I hear that dude say this one more time... dude you have no idea what you are talking about. The fx3 looks like its an iphone. Also the lenses you are using have color casts, and different coatings, fyi.
Both pronunciations of Gemini are acceptable, red did not originate the word. For instance, most of the astronauts in the Gemini project pronounced it Gem-an-ee, like the do here. In present day most people say Gem-an-eye both are acceptable
Not throwing shade..but it's pretty obvious they're invested in the Red cameras... just based on his first light CC...he seemed to be not grading the Sony optimally...that mixed with the shady comments like "RUclips look" and "low light noise" ..when I've seen plenty of tests where the Sony blows away the Komodo in low light....
Because sony has in camera noise reduction. Cinema cameras dont have noise reduction. If you use noise reduction on RED or Arri footage they see in low light just as good as any canon or sony.
So awesome! Any chance you’d put the fx6 against the Komodo? Feel like that would be more of an accurate comparison since they’re both more affordable cinema cameras, nonetheless dope video! 🤙🏼
Thanks for watching. Would like to try the FX6 but none were available. I think the FX6 feature wise will top the Komodo especially with the built in ND filter
Very nice video! I own both Sony and Komodo and they both are amazing cameras. Cinema cameras have a different look for sure than digital mirrorless cameras . It just comes down to different looks that you might be after and different workflows.
Bro Color Grade is Trash...why use Premiere Pro for color grade? It's what I'm saying you can have the best camera but if you don't know how to color your image is going to look like shit. The FX3 for the Price to me is better if I'm spending 6k I'm getting the FX6 with internal ND. I'm not saying anything bad About RED but I feel like its all about the name in the industry
You are also comparing an extremely sharp sony lens without a Promist or any type of diffusion to a DZO cine lens. The lens will make a much bigger difference in look than the sensor from my experience and I own and Epic W and FX3. Also REDs need to be sharpened in post and Sony does that internally unless you shoot RAW (I think). I don't shoot raw with my sony cameras so I'm not sure on that.
Haha Sony didn’t pay me or give me anything for this review. As a matter of fact they weren’t even aware I was comparing the FX3 to these two cameras. I just found the FX3 to be an extremely good value for its output and performance

Sony fan boy throughout the whole vid.
The Red Jimminey! 😂looks a whole lot like the Gemini…
The KOMODO smokes the living shit out of the FancX3.
I agree. The Sony is rubbish in contrast.

Awesome Video, was this the Scinetone Color Codec or Slog ?
Thanks for watching. SLog 3
From what I see you can tone down on their sharpness to get it that softness.
Can or use a cinema lens which will give the softness
what lens would you recommend for the fx3 to get that cinema look ?
You can try a variety of cinema lenses out there, also perhaps some vintage lenses will help. Cinema lenses aren’t as bitingly sharp as photography.
Wtf is that grade, you are supposed to use the correct conversion LUTs, just tinkering with the levels and *especially* saturation isn’t going to cut it.

:( why you didn't put the BMPCC 6Kpro ????? I wish to see that shootout !!! I need to decide which to buy !!! thanks for the review by the way...
Thanks for watching. We didn’t have access to one unfortunately.
@@TECH360TV could you consider ?? I would really appreciate it. Thanks a lot for answer so quick.
Unfortunately don’t have access to the FX3 and Red cameras now. However there are a lot of videos on the BMPCC out there.
Is it me or is the fx3 TOO DARK in the shadows
Correct, it has horrible dynamic range.

the sony does not match up is nice but is no film like .. amd considering komodo and that i wished i had the money for the red..

I’m mad how yall pronounced Gemini 😂 the disrespect of red
I said Gemin “eye” they say Gemin “ee”. I thought it was the former but I also guess it depends the market and how the pronounce things
Yeah its gemin eye

Throw a mist filter on the fx3 and it makes a huge difference. Also, I’m still not convinced he’s pronouncing “Geminee” correctly lol
Agreed; I think it’s the language barrier. But “Geminee” isn’t correct, lol.
to get softness yes but at the sacrifice of blowing out your highlights when outside

Yes agree. Having said that the FX3 does have many attributes that does make it quite enticing. The AF when you need it and the size and weight.

A pleasure!
And raw includes no noise reduction
sony way better LOL.
For Weddings maybe. 😂
FX3 is dual ISO and you only used the lower ISO range. The FX3 kills the Red using the proper (upper) ISO range.

erm... actually i more want what happen if use the same cine lenses on these camera :)

Yes Red has that cinema look but I think with the right lens the Sony can have that as well or come closer to it
