Thank you brother helped me out so much. Just got done replacing my shift shaft and this video helped me out so much. The dealer wanted 500 plus for the job I did. Thank you again.
Doing this on my 2014 street glide special fixing the shift shaft seal and thank you so much for your videos saved me about 500 dollars from putting it in the shop!! You’re amazing and much appreciated!
I just changed shift shaft seal on my 2021 Roadking Special without removing inner and outer primary...lots of room to get at in on the M8...took me an hour and a half tops...removed transmission top cover..removed trans shift lever clip and washer. unhooked shifter pawl spring...lift pawl...pushed shifter shaft through towards transmission...bent a piece of welding rod...picked out old seal...popped out easily with with shifter shaft pushed in....push shaft back to normal position making sure shifter centering spring in place...heat shrink tube over the shifter spline and oil up...slip new seal over shaft and set into place with a 1/2 inch socket levering with a screw driver. Replace everything back in reverse order of disassembly...good to go. M8 has lots of room between primary to get at it.
Much obliged for the vid!! Had to replace the shifter lever on my Dyna. Spline was worn to bare metal. Not a tooth in sight. The breakdown of each step was definitely helpful. Keep up the good work!!

I think the clutch inspection cover screws require a # 27 Torx, #25 will strip out, at least on my 2012 Road King. Good video of what was to me a scary job.
great video very clear and informative but what about the hole on the inner primary cover that the shaft for the old shifter went through? wont oil spill out of there???
I just used this video to help with what I thought was a shifter shaft seal leak. Was not and the shifter seal was good but decided to replace anyways. The seal was simple to remove and replace. My leak was coming from the trans shaft seal which was a piece of cake to remove and install new one. This video help me save a bunch of money and helped with confidence working on my ride. Question I have, once I subscribed how do I see other videos you post ? thanks MT

Nice. You don't show the seal replacement in a video titled, "Replace a shifter lever shaft seal blah, blah, blah..." Very wise of you to abide by the law.
IT COST ME 800 PLUS FOR THE COMPENSATOR REPLACEMENT. THE PRIMARY LEAKED AFTERWARD. THEY CLAIMED IT WAS THE SHIFTER LEVER LEAKING FROM TRANSMISSION. I NEVER LOST FLUID FROM TRANI, JUST PRIMARY. WHEN I TOOK IT BACK NEW SERVICE MANAGER, I WAS TOLD BEFORE "IT MIGHT BE THE INNER PRIMARY." ANOTHER 340 DOLLARS. THEY STILL CLAIMED IT WAS THE SHIFTER SEAL. THE COPENSATOR SHOULD BE A RECALL. THE SERVICE MANAGER, FORMER, SAID, "WE ARE HAVING TO REPLACE ALL OF THEM." THEY USED THE 88 COMPENSATOR FOR THE 96 ENGINE . THEN THE REPLACEMENT ONE HAD TO BE UPGRADED TO THE SCREAMING EAGLE ONE AS THE OTHERS FAILED. I ONLY POINT THIS OUT AS YOU SUPPORT MY COMMENTS. I LOVE MY HARLEY BUT MANAGEMENT IS GOING THE WAY OF GM. HARLEY IS NOT AS BIG AS GM SO MUCH EASIER TO FAIL. I DON'T WANT TO SEE THAT. I HOPE SOMEONE FROM MANAGEMENT SEE'S MY COMMENT HERE.
I have to replace the shift lever on a 1993 Harley electra glide and I have to remove the primary to get to it, the video helps alot, will the torque specs in the video work on my bike?
No, nothing needs to be done. It's sealed. You just ad the plug on the outside. Ride safe & Ride Often! great video Ryan.....my 2005 night train has a loose shifter arm at the transmission side ...is this video similar ,,,,i am changing the Allen bolt & torquing it down (only to see if it helps)...if not, then i will need to remove primary & inner cover for further evaluation
Great video I need to do this to my 2013 Electra Glide, ,dealer wants $400+ ....how much was the seal shift shaft seal....crazy....I think I can do this....thx
DO NOT Tighten the primary cover fastener bolts to the torque on the video for this model!! The spec is 12-14ftlbs it will break the bolts!! Everything else on the video is spot on though and is great!!! I have this exact model and it really helped me through the process besides the one bolt issue..just always check your motorcycle for the torque specs like he says in the video...all around still a great video.
Hey. So I am switching to mids. How big of a deal is the shifter arm length? I cant find one for mids and im already balls deep. I was thinking of cutting it and make a hole myself.
I'm switching to mid controls from the factory fronts on my 03 wide glide and need to do alot of this, including entirely swap the inner primary to one which actually has the hole going through it to accommodate a mids gearshift. So, fk yeah man, thanks for this, it makes it seem do able. Respect
Ryan Urlacher I bought a 1990 fxrs and it has forward controls and I want to put it back to mid controls. When it comes to the shifter shaft, do I have to take the outer and inner primary off? Or can I just take the outer off? It doesn’t look like there’s enough room to put the shifter shaft in with the inner left on. Thank you for all your videos and your time.
Is this job i can diy? Is it worth buying the special tools needed? My dealer wont even let me bring my bike in again until December where i live. A few specifics: 1. What torque wrench is this? 2. Do you recommend a seal seating tool? 3. Do you recommend replacing all gaskets as you go? Ive worked on a lot of bikes but i havent done this job yet. 05 softail in TN.

as from my last post,i have to replace my shifter shaft seal,on a 03 road king. my question is does the starter get unbolted then just pushed back, to remove inner primary? Doesn't look like much room,on other side, any suggestions?
very good information, step by step, i already knew the process, and you guys did a great job, good to mention,on older bikes, about replacing shifter seal...gues why i mention that/ Ha ha thanks guys

Minute 10:15. What does the bolt right above the shifter shart called? The bolt between the shifter shaft and the serial number. I am seeing just a bit of seepage on my 103. Is there a seal or can I tighten it somehow without taking the primary off?

I have an 02 883 sportster it has 33k miles on it and I have like a flexible chrome over my cable and it's all the way up and tight on the cable the nut is up and for some reason the shift arm is up instead of down like most of the videos. Also my truck is broke down and I had to ride my HD all the way home in2nd gear. But I adjusted the arm So it will go into 1st now. Do I need to turn the shift arm down or just leave it up. I'm from Salisbury and HD shop is shut down and this is my 1st HD. I'm a LANDLORD AND ex ironworker/certified Welder for 25 years. But I like to watch videos and fix it myself most of the time. Thanks for the help in advance. PEACE OUT AND I'M NOW SUBSCRIBED TO CHANNEL.
Danitron thanks but I’ve already had the work don’t a few months ago. It’s called a tower gasket. No one mentioned it in any videos. Dynademos did my mid swap and a very detailed video. 🤙🏽

Hope u can help me out I got a 02 road it now has 15k miles it’s leaking from behind the primary case I don’t think it’s the overfill unless there more than one. How would I diagnosed not problem like where should I look I think it might b the shifter seal. Thnx in advanced
Hey Ryan, appreciate the video man. My 2007 nightrain appears to be leaking from the torx pin just above the shift shaft, is this a common/ hopefully easy fix? It doesn't seem to have a seal, and there doesn't seem to be much info on the net about this. Thanks again for the LAB vids and your time. Ben
How do you replace the rear shift shaft? I have a 2010 FLHTK the front shift shaft failed and I replaced the front shift shaft and the heel toe shifters. One week later 10 miles from home the rear shaft failed. Of course I was in 6th gear.
@@usmcvet0313 I rode home in 6th riding the clutch but I made it. Ended up having to adjust the clutch and replacing the rear shaft once things cooled down.

Got a 97 883 Sporty just had the ignition module changed to a dyantec and ran fine now it wants to stumble like it not getting enough fuel the all of sudden it starts running fine good throttle response any ideas of what could be causing this? Need help here
Great video, very well done and detailed. I liked very much no matter what anyone else says. Been riding since the mid 70's first HD 50 Panhead. Noticed my shift arm was way loose on my 98 Road King and found this video. Question, shift arm appears to be aluminum so it will wear instead of the trans shaft splines? Is that the case? Thanks, Giles
Question: I have play at the seal that causes rattle coming from the spline. If I replace the seal will it fix the rattle or is there a bushing in there as well? 2018 fxlr
Do you have to readjust your clutch after replacing the shifter shaft? my shifter keeps coming off so im guessing im gonna have to replace the whole shifter setup, i plan on changing the inner and outer primary gasket, the oil shaft seal, and the oil seal ring since i'll already have it broken down to change the shifter setup. but in a bit of a time crunch and was wondering if i'll have to adjust my clutch. thanks
Do you guys have anything on "sticking" shifters? I have a "96" Softail and the shifter does not snap back in place after shifting...either up or down.
I've always thought red locktite was pretty much permanent. Can you confirm that you use red on these bolts? Or maybe you're using a red that isn't permanent?
On my 2014 street glide special, my shifters went loose and I had to ride home using my heel to shift the linkinge, shift pedals are on tights but there's a issue with the shaft I believe, do you guys have a video on repairing this issue by any chance?

Done this job several times on different models....this was done very well & nice detail

Some Dyna riders have gone to 13.5 to 14 inch shocks and a 2" fork tube increase for proper ground clearance. That will certainly help taller riders.

Thanks m8. I already have my primary off and noticed weeping and saw your how to after a quick search.
Appreciate it ❤
Awesome vid bud! Very clear and concise! Love watching your vids!
I appreciate that!
I think the clutch inspection cover screws require a # 27 Torx, #25 will strip out, at least on my 2012 Road King. Good video of what was to me a scary job.
#27 on my 2011 RK also
great video very clear and informative but what about the hole on the inner primary cover that the shaft for the old shifter went through? wont oil spill out of there???
can you let me know if you found out if they need to cover it?
I just used this video to help with what I thought was a shifter shaft seal leak. Was not and the shifter seal was good but decided to replace anyways. The seal was simple to remove and replace. My leak was coming from the trans shaft seal which was a piece of cake to remove and install new one. This video help me save a bunch of money and helped with confidence working on my ride. Question I have, once I subscribed how do I see other videos you post ? thanks MT

Is it normal for that shaft to have any side to side movements?
Great video
What did you use to seal the shifter shaft holes in the inner and outer primary where the shaft for the mid controls used to be?
Thanks
Thank you for showing this video

What is the bolt just above the shift shaft?
Awesome work
Thanks a lot 😊
Nice. You don't show the seal replacement in a video titled, "Replace a shifter lever shaft seal blah, blah, blah..." Very wise of you to abide by the law.
exactly stupid
Well done video!
I think my oil shaft shifter seal is leaking on my 2001 FXDWG. Would that be transmission gear oil that I'm losing, or engine oil?
I HOPE SOMEONE FROM MANAGEMENT SEE'S MY COMMENT HERE.
sorry for those frustrations rafdecc
When adding primary oil, what is the proper level you want to achieve especially at the clutch basket.
What is the Torx bolt just above the shifter shaft do
I have to replace the shift lever on a 1993 Harley electra glide and I have to remove the primary to get to it, the video helps alot, will the torque specs in the video work on my bike?
How about the inter primary opening for the removed shiftier shaft Do you plug this?
No, nothing needs to be done. It's sealed. You just ad the plug on the outside.

great video Ryan.....my 2005 night train has a loose shifter arm at the transmission side ...is this video similar ,,,,i am changing the Allen bolt & torquing it down (only to see if it helps)...if not, then i will need to remove primary & inner cover for further evaluation
Where’d you order the bolt?
Great video I need to do this to my 2013 Electra Glide, ,dealer wants $400+ ....how much was the seal shift shaft seal....crazy....I think I can do this....thx
DO NOT Tighten the primary cover fastener bolts to the torque on the video for this model!! The spec is 12-14ftlbs it will break the bolts!! Everything else on the video is spot on though and is great!!! I have this exact model and it really helped me through the process besides the one bolt issue..just always check your motorcycle for the torque specs like he says in the video...all around still a great video.
The 84-108 is in inch-lbs.
Hey. So I am switching to mids. How big of a deal is the shifter arm length? I cant find one for mids and im already balls deep. I was thinking of cutting it and make a hole myself.
I have a 96 FXD Dyna Super Glide will these steps apply the same? The shaft on mine is so badly worn
I'm switching to mid controls from the factory fronts on my 03 wide glide and need to do alot of this, including entirely swap the inner primary to one which actually has the hole going through it to accommodate a mids gearshift. So, fk yeah man, thanks for this, it makes it seem do able. Respect
Great job on the video...
There was no mention if the shaft seal has a oil side in or out
Thanx brother
Ryan Urlacher I bought a 1990 fxrs and it has forward controls and I want to put it back to mid controls. When it comes to the shifter shaft, do I have to take the outer and inner primary off? Or can I just take the outer off? It doesn’t look like there’s enough room to put the shifter shaft in with the inner left on. Thank you for all your videos and your time.
does this video apply for a 1999 fxd dyna?
Is this job i can diy? Is it worth buying the special tools needed? My dealer wont even let me bring my bike in again until December where i live.
A few specifics:
1. What torque wrench is this?
2. Do you recommend a seal seating tool?
3. Do you recommend replacing all gaskets as you go?
Ive worked on a lot of bikes but i havent done this job yet.
05 softail in TN.
Do you have a video fir a 1340 evo softail gear box shaft seals mine’s leaking
Sorry, but we don't
Great video Ryan, don't you need to fill up the whole, with pin or smths, which is left after removing mids ?
Yes, the kit came with a plug.

as from my last post,i have to replace my shifter shaft seal,on a 03 road king. my question is does the starter get unbolted then just pushed back, to remove inner primary? Doesn't look like much room,on other side, any suggestions?
Is yours leaking from the back side? I have a 15 street bob and leaks primary from the back end and guessing itll be the same?
very good information, step by step, i already knew the process, and you guys did a great job,
good to mention,on older bikes, about replacing shifter seal...gues why i mention that/ Ha ha
thanks guys

Minute 10:15. What does the bolt right above the shifter shart called? The bolt between the shifter shaft and the serial number. I am seeing just a bit of seepage on my 103. Is there a seal or can I tighten it somehow without taking the primary off?
Great video but I got to my seal and can't remove it. Tried getting a pick in there but couldn't get a grip on it.
Sorry to hear you having problems. Ours came our pretty easy.

Got it out I just had to drill a couple small holes in it and work it out with the picks
What are the dimentions of you "stick"? THanks
Does the shift shaft going through the primary need a seal?! I’m going from forward controls to mids.
Yes, you're going to want that seal that comes in most kits
Danitron thanks but I’ve already had the work don’t a few months ago. It’s called a tower gasket. No one mentioned it in any videos. Dynademos did my mid swap and a very detailed video. 🤙🏽
Great vid, Dose the bike have to be in a certain gear when ajusting the inner clutch?
No need
lot of metal shavings on that oil drain plug... is that normal for a new bike?
Not uncommon for a new bike. All the parts are wearing in.

Hope u can help me out I got a 02 road it now has 15k miles it’s leaking from behind the primary case I don’t think it’s the overfill unless there more than one. How would I diagnosed not problem like where should I look I think it might b the shifter seal. Thnx in advanced
so with the lever shaft seal, does it go all the way through from the outside where you complete the seal with the loctite?
Is there a seal for that hole where the shifter shaft went through the inner primary? I find it hard to believe that won't leak over time...?
Nope. Won't leak
Castrol?!?! Thought you were AMSOIL guys? Just bustin your balls :) Another excellent video!
LOl, Thanks for the shout out Al
so you don't need to cover that inner hole where the shaft used to be?
Do you have a part number for that seal for a 2012 road glide custom? Pls help can’t find it anywhere
I believe it is part # 11000101
What did you end up doing?
@@usmcvet0313 I rode home in 6th riding the clutch but I made it. Ended up having to adjust the clutch and replacing the rear shaft once things cooled down.
How to remove the shift shaft oil
Is there a reason a air impact gun is not used? My 98 RK has a bolt instead of a torx but it is very thin. Any input would be appreciated.
No reason, but we use the tools we have.

Impact is fine, but I would always break them loose by hand. Stripped out bolts are a real pain.
I would agree with that Giles
Question: I have play at the seal that causes rattle coming from the spline. If I replace the seal will it fix the rattle or is there a bushing in there as well? 2018 fxlr
No
Do you have to readjust your clutch after replacing the shifter shaft? my shifter keeps coming off so im guessing im gonna have to replace the whole shifter setup, i plan on changing the inner and outer primary gasket, the oil shaft seal, and the oil seal ring since i'll already have it broken down to change the shifter setup. but in a bit of a time crunch and was wondering if i'll have to adjust my clutch. thanks
No you don't have to. Your not messing with the clutch.
Ryan Urlacher thank you
Do you guys have anything on "sticking" shifters? I have a "96" Softail and the shifter does not snap back in place after shifting...either up or down.
I have the same problem. Did you figure it out?
I've always thought red locktite was pretty much permanent. Can you confirm that you use red on these bolts? Or maybe you're using a red that isn't permanent?
Red is the toughest. You can still get bolts off when using red threadlock. It's not permanent, just the strongest.
On my 2014 street glide special, my shifters went loose and I had to ride home using my heel to shift the linkinge, shift pedals are on tights but there's a issue with the shaft I believe, do you guys have a video on repairing this issue by any chance?
Not yet Albert, but we hope to have one soon. Sorry that doesn't help you at the moment. Sound like you need to replace the linkage.

hey there, why did u choose castrol over amsoil? and what is your opinion on harley SYN 3? great video ryan and nice bike! i have the same bike so u know i am LOVIN these FXDLS videos!
Rock on!!
rock on is ur answer to my questions? really? i dont get it!!
The title of the video is replace the Harley shift shaft lever seal and you didnt do it! I cant figure out how to pull the old one out
... that would be 84 to 108 INCH POUNDS on the clutch cover ...
Do NOT use wood! Lol chop up a cheap cutting bored. Will work better
Use a piece of flat stock. That board snaps? Bad day.
🤔
Whaaaat??
They wanted to charge a lot for that easy job???
This was more useless than doc Harley and fix your hog dude. Who both neglected to mention the correct seal orientation which is spring side to bike.
wouldn't that be indicated in the manual?
What a stupid design
So you don’t do the shift shaft seal thanks for wasting my time
1998 xlh sportster replacing shiftershaft
Iv got a 98.xlh and my primary chain came lose (lock nut) came louse it took out my cluch blew it apart bent my shifter shaft bad I got a new one how dose it go back togatheriv got new cluch inner ouh
Hey. So I am switching to mids. How big of a deal is the shifter arm length? I cant find one for mids and im already balls deep. I was thinking of cutting it and make a hole myself and tap it or just use some different hardware to secure the linkage.
