A lot of the comments talk about early glam bands being the beginning of this genre, and while it’s true that Slade, the Sweet, T. Rex, New York Dolls, and others were huge influences, they were glam, not hair metal. You also have Alice Cooper and Kiss as huge influences, but that wasn’t quite hair metal yet. In my opinion, it was Quiet Riot that put out the first real hair metal album and pulled all of those influences into the next phase of the sound.

Yall gotta check out some live videos and see Tommy Lee flying above the crowd and spinning around in his drum set. It's nuts. As for your other questions, Motley Crue was definitely harder edged than Poison and Warrant and the real glam metal stuff. Check out Kickstart My Heart. I would agree that these guys were better musicians than most of the other hair bands of the time, which is why I still listen to this album.

The first real Hair Metal band had to be Kiss who were popular during the mid 1970s and onward. They inspired the likes of Quiet Riot and Motley Crue who would later popularise the genre into the 1980s. Some people say Kiss aren't Metal, but for the 1970s, the bar wasn't that high to be considered Metal. Led Zeppelin was considered Metal at the time and many still consider them as Metal. Kiss started a lot of trends for the 1980s LA Metal scene that lasted the whole decade including the arena songs, face paint/makeup, extravagant live shows, et cetera. They actually took a lot from Alice Cooper who came out a few years before, and Alice took from Arthur Brown who was popular in the 1960s.

as a huge Crüehead, you cannot over look Mick! Besides being an amazing rock guitarist, he's one of the absolute best Blues guitarists. Tommy was the master of stage presence. Nikki is the ringmaster, and Vince, well, he'd steal your girl. Mötley is all about image. Their live shows are truly something you cannot get anywhere else. Not only LOUD but amazing pyrotechnics and shenanigans!!!

The name to remember whenever talking about Motley Crue is Nikki Sixx, the bass player. He wrote the music, the lyrics, and, was the chief creative force behind the band.

Motley Crue always had a more street feel because they actually got started as a punk band. They only started doing the glam stuff for the money. You can certainly hear Bob Rock's production on this album with those bassy and crisp drums. He's the same guy who produced Metallica's black album with Enter Sandman, Sad but True, etc... He had a signature production sound.

Their Home Sweet Home ballad is really good. During the late 1970s and early 1980s, heavy metal spawned several forms; glam metal became its most popular. The first wave of glam metal bands included Quiet Riot, Mötley Crüe, Ratt, Helix, W.A.S.P., Dokken, Bon Jovi, Night Ranger, and Stryper. The very first was Black Sabbath in the 70s'.

I'm 5 days late to the party here.
These guys were certainly one of the pioneers of hair/glam metal, but were heavily influenced by 70s glam rockers like the New York Dolls, David Bowie, and T Rex as well as giants like Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath.
They gave up the glam look after the album Theater of Pain, starting with Girls Girls Girls.
Y'all gotta check out the videos for Live Wire, Looks That Kill, Too Young To Fall In Love, Home Sweet Home, Kickstart My Heart, Smoking In The Boy's Room, Wild Side, Girls Girls Girls, and Primal Scream. They have other videos, but those are their heyday vids.

Opinion here, but I think Tommy Lee is known more for his marriage to Heather Locklear and his sex tape with Pamela Anderson than his stellar drumming. I'm not saying he's bad, just not considered one of the best ever. With that said, I do like his solo song "Hold Me Down" quite a lot, he does a decent job on vocals.

Hi. Love your reaction to Mötley Crües Dr Feelgood. Been a fan since the 80,s and you should watch their biopic on Netflix called "The Dirt" or read the book (even better).
The guys started out in 1981 and first video was "Live Wire". They were one of the first heavy metal-glamrock hairbands. But their first album "Too Fast for Love "was also some what punkrock mixed with heavy metal. With every album they change their looks and sound, because other bands started copying them. And Mötley always had great stageshow with amazing pyrotecnics. Hope you check out more Mötley Crüe.
Songs to react to: Live Wire, Looks that kill, Shout at the Devil, Home Sweet Home, Smoking in the boys room, Wild Side, Girls Girls Girls, Kickstart my Heart, Without You, Primal Scream, Anarchy, Affraid, If I die tomorrow, Saints of Los Angeles, The Dirt with Mgk.
Mick Mars is a very underrated leadguitarist and really good. He brought a lot of blues into many of their songs.
If you wanna check out more live shows, check out their "Carnival of Sin" tour from 2005. Amazing sound.
This year 2022 they are going on tour with Def Leppard, Poison and Joan Jett. The Stadium Tour.
Last year they had a 40th Anniversary.
