  • This is the bicycle I have owned the longest(by far!) I bought this mountain bike new in 2001 and it has been used as an mtb, commuter, road bike, and now it is my winter bike with its studded Gravdal 's by 45 North. I wish Strava was around back in the day so I knew how many overall miles I have on this whip. Mostly still original except for the bars, fork and some cables.
    I filmed this with my Canon EOS R5 and GoPro Hero 8 Black

    In junior high school I had a Schwinn Varsity 10-speed and stopped riding once I got my drivers license in high school in 1985. I was bike-less until 2003 when I bought a brand new Trek 800 Single Track Series. It was a great bike. Rode it all over and kept it like new until most recently selling it in 2022. thanks for sharing your story of your 4900....

      Rad - the single tracks were great bikes. Which mine didn’t get stolen. 4900 still going strong in the winter though.

    I love my big yellow 2002 Trek 4900...still stock, just the way I bought it new.

    Bought a new-old-stock 2000 4900 from a dealer here in Peterborough Canada in 2011 (!). Still had manufacturer tags and stickers. Made in USA. Still totally original, rock shocks etc.

      @TimFitzwater  Год назад

      Cool! My shocks were way to worn from thousands of miles - and I’ve switched the bars twice - but the frame and drive train has held up amazingly well.

      Thanks - I truly appreciate that! My original reason for making any RUclips videos was simply to become a better editor.

    I have a 2002 Trek 4500 I just put Gravdals on for winter riding last weekend. it's mostly original. I've long thought about putting solid forks on it. I might yet.

    • @TimFitzwater
      @TimFitzwater  Год назад

      Yeah - mine was sooo bouncy and useless. Lucky I had a buddy who gave me that suspension-corrected steel one. But those Gravdals have changed my life for sure - I love having that confidence in the snow/slush. Worth every penny.

    would love to see a video on the motobecane if possible! my dad gave his away when he moved, along with an old Tour de France...he claims he asked me if I wanted them, but there's no way I would've passed either of them up. ces't la vie, je suppose!

    I need some snow tires. Lol. It was a super slow ride last night. Those bridges on tow path are super fun right now. Lol.
    I did dump the bike last night on a bridge but I blame that on some dude giving his old lady a “massage” on side of the trail. Made me do a double take and I dumped it.

      @TimFitzwater  3 года назад +1

      Ha! I'm not exaggerating the difference that they make. Went down the Hickory detour in the worst of the snow the other night with no trouble...

    Nice. My first "real" bike (not from K-Mart) that I was able to afford after college was a 2004 Trek 4300. I still have it. I barely ride it, but it has sentimental value and I don't want to get rid of it. It's so heavy.

    • @TimFitzwater
      @TimFitzwater  3 года назад

      Yeah - I could never get rid of this thing - so I'm glad I found a use for it. Is the 4300 steel? My 4900 is no featherweight but it isn't overly heavy. I had a Huffy "mountain bike" that was an absolute boat anchor!

    • @adambennett5881

      @@TimFitzwater Dude, I would destroy one Huffy/Roadmaster/Magna per summer growing up. We had a big piece of woods nearby (private property, not ours) that we would ride in and get chased out of all the time. Tons of fun, but those bikes were not engineered to do actual mountain bike stuff. The 4300 is aluminum, and the heaviness of it is relative, I'm sure. (I think it's around 30lbs). I'm comparing this thing to my road bikes and gravel bike, which are pretty light. The 4300 is mostly used for riding with my kids at this time.

      @@adambennett5881 Ha! Yeah - my Huffy was the "Mountain Storm" - I know because it is still hanging in my Dad's barn and I glance at it in contempt from time to time. If the weight didn't stop me from getting up whatever illegal trail we were on missing the shifts certainly did.

    Great story and bike - reminds me of how I got started cycling with my '94 Specialized Hardrock Ultra. Although I don't think I could ride my Hardrock in the salt - how's your aluminum frame and components holding up to it?

    • @TimFitzwater
      @TimFitzwater  3 года назад

      I really wanted a Hardrock but the guys at the bike shop steered me to the Trek - I don’t say it in the video but I think it was them selling me last year’s model and it turns out it was/is too small for me! Anyways- the bike is holding up fine in the salt and winter riding. I give it the occasional rinse but almost always wipe it down the day after a ride and hit the moving parts with some WD40. Maybe not what a mechanic would recommend but almost 20 years on and it’s still going.

    Looks like fun. Ive got a 7400 from that same era that just sits around. I gotta finding a fork upgrade like yours. Was is just any threadless fork or something special?
    How bad are you getting blasted with wet slush? Considering a front fender yet?

    • @TimFitzwater
      @TimFitzwater  3 года назад +1

      Just a threadless steel fork that a friend had that was similar in geometry. Before he gave me that I was searching ebay and there were a number of options on there.
      I do have some fenders but I found that when riding in the really cold weather I've had some problems with snow freezing and getting jammed up. I basically try to avoid the really wet slush. I don't need to commute on this so I can get away without them.

    Hello, I just purchased the same bike in 2024, is in great shape. Quick question, what is the biggest size of tire I can put on? Thanks!

    • @TimFitzwater
      @TimFitzwater  4 месяца назад +1

      Factory rec is probably 2.1 but I'd think 2.3's would work.

    Does your bike isn't too small for you? What is the Trek frame size?

    • @TimFitzwater
      @TimFitzwater  3 года назад

      It is a little small for me - but the sticker came off a long time ago and I don’t remember exactly what size it is. I like my road bikes to be 60.
