  • Here we check out the most excellent Wilson Combat Hackathorn Special! This truly is a special 1911!
    Ken Hackathorn is one of my favorite firearms instructors (Clint Smith being#1 to me!) and this 1911 is a great ode to Mr. Hackathorn!
    "Ken Hackathorn has served as a US Army Special Forces Small Arms Instructor, Gunsite Instructor, and NRA Police Firearms Instructor. He is currently an FBI Certified Firearms Instructor, Certified Deputy Sheriff with Washington County SO, Ohio, and a SRT member and Special Response Team trainer. Ken has trained US Military Special Operations forces, Marine FAST and SOTG units and is a contract small arms trainer to FBI SWAT and HRT.
    Ken has provided training to Federal, State, and local law enforcement agencies and been active in small arms training for the past 25 years. He has written firearms related material for Guns & Ammo, Combat Handguns, Soldier Of Fortune, and currently American Handgunner and contributed to at least six other gun/shooting journals. Ken was also a founding member of IPSC and IDPA."
    Stay Safe and Check 360 Often!

    Really enjoy your videos. I just placed an order for my own and customized the hell out of it from Wilson. I can't wait. I did the armor tuff in grey with black aggressive starburst grips and it's a 9mm. Man it's a slow wait! I'm gonna carry mine appendix every day! Love the Wilson vids, keep them coming!

    Well, thanks entirely to this video and the others in this series, I bought a Hak just like the one you did. I'm 5 weeks into the two months it's taking to build the one I wanted and I'm getting Pumped! I totally agree with your opinions of this firearm after the research I've done on the Wilson company and its products. Again, thank you for all your work and astute observations of the Hakathorn Special. Good luck!

      @TheOl1911  8 лет назад

      Congrats!!!!! Let me know when you get it. I've been running this gun through its paces pretty hard. The only spot where there is wear is the ejection port...its chipping away the finish... but I'm shooting it a ton. Been practicing a lot of presentation drills and I've already done a one handed reload in which I used the rear sight to rack and one time used the front/recoil plug to rack so its getting its marks...LOL.

    • @TheOl1911
      @TheOl1911  8 лет назад +1

      thanks my friend! I truly feel Wilson is where its at for a semi or full custom 1911. Their history is interesting and they've been doing it for a long time and their custom service is bar none. I know they are pricy but I believe its worth it (to a certain extent). Les Baer is nice for sure and what you get at their price points is almost a bargain.

    I know I'm posting late but this just showed up on my watch list. I just ordered a Wilson Combat ACP from Wilson. It was a toss up between the Hackathorn Special and the ACP. The ACP won out beings it was $1500 cheaper but it was a hard decision. I just didn't want to be paying for it for 20 years. I financed mine because it works out better as I got a lot more going on here at home that requires money, such as 2 new cars another getting repaired, my oldest in college and my youngest is a senior in high school getting ready for higher education. I just bought an RIA FS TAC II in 10mm and I also have a model train addiction. Both LGB and Lionel and it gets expensive. But anyway, I'll soon be the owner of a Wilson Combat ACP with a black Armor Tuff slide and gray frame. I saw the Hackathorn Special in those colors and fell in love with it.

      I should be going before the weekend...i plan to break it in with a min. of 500rds in one setting. I wanna see what this thing is made of. Will not field strip it. Just lube it and go to town. I think I'll have a buddy help me with breaking it in. I like the Wilson X-Tac also. I know of a guy at the range that carries the compact one.

    Awesome gun. I've always wondered how many 1911s you have had over the years. Hope your Wilson stays. You Les Baer was pretty awesome too.

      I've owned quite a few 1911s since 1998-present. Some have stayed but most were sold/traded. I think the Wilson will stay for sure. It is something special to me. But we'll see. I did a lot of selling earlier this year... I am planning on adding another 1911 this year maybe. We'll see. Also am willing to sell the Colt LWC 2016 model probably...

      +TheOl1911 I own only 3 1911s now have had 5 at one time. Only regret selling one which was a Colt Gold Cup Trophy. But I also bought a blued Delta Elite so my regret went away quickly.

    Do you think it would be ok to put those grips on a Springfield 1911? I may call and ask Bill.

I have heard only good things but it is a 1911 . A high end tool , just like any good thing worth while , it should need some kind of break in congrats.....

    What do you think is better Wilson or Les Baer I'm a new sub and I know this is an old video but I also watched your Les video this gun looks and sounds by what you are saying better overall. I also think its fine to talk about price because guys like me it would help to know for many reasons like research its part of the gun and the overall experience. I want to buy one of these few 1911's that are made by the few company's that we all know Wilson,Les, etc what do you think about Cabot are they in the same league as Wilson, Wesson or Les etc. I really enjoy your content Thank you its a shame that RUclips cut gun channels.

      Greetings - this specific model really proved itself to me. I lost round count but it has eaten a lot. Used it in a class and it was 100% and mags were dropping into the dirt constantly however I used the Vickers Tactical mags only. So this specific 1911 for me holds a special place in my heart. I carried it from 9/2016 to the present however will be moving to carrying the Ultralight Carry Compact soon.
      Les Baer makes a fine 1911 at a good price. I like the TRS or the UTC. Just more "business" with no frills. The Wilson Combat has a lot of options on it (cosmetically) but I do feel the Wilson is built to more exacting specifications. I also like the Wilson Combat history (ok people say I drank the Wilson Cool Aid - then so be it) and how they build parts in-house. Yes these are expensive machines but you are paying for the "highly skilled labor" and "quality fitted parts". Our State Police Tactical Unit all carry a custom built 1911 that probably hit above the $3k mark. These guns are run really hard and it shows. I guess it goes back to that cliche phrase "How much is your life worth?" Of course you can get a less expensive firearm that is reliable but some people will put a little bit larger worth on their life because these 1911s will go bang every time you press the trigger...
      But anyway I don't know anything about Cabot guns however I get so many questions about them. Dan Wesson is a great buy and a great 1911 for what you get. I don't have any experience with Ed Browns... Guncrafter Industries is one I am interested in as a friend of mine has the Frag model and its pretty nice and 100%. I really like the Springfield Professional but it might be a little overpriced. But that is a great 1911 that is pretty custom.
      Thanks for the comment! Yeah YT cut gun channels but I do this as a hobby and to talk shop with like minded people.

    You are all forgiven for having sold your Les Baer. It is a Bill Wilson Combat after all. What a sweet 1911. What down the pipe next? A range video, maybe?

      LOL thanks. Yes I need to hit the range with this thing. I plan on blasting a ton of rounds through it for its first range visit. Not taking it down - just lube it up and go to town. I might enlist some friends to help me break her in. Should be interesting. I hope no issues!!!!

      You know I looked at Guncrafter but... There was a guy at the range that carries a FRAG model. He let me shoot it a few months ago and I liked it. Never saw the guy again but that was a nice piece. Range video coming this weekend I think. I'm gonna blast a ton of rounds through it for its first range visit. Might need to enlist a friend to help! Not going to field strip it or anything. Lube it up and go to town. Curious to see if it fails.
