Totally! Right out the gate I couldn't wait to share things like the sprite prep and the day/night colours, which is why that all ended up in this first asset prep video 😆
this looks absoluetely amazing!! The portrait (that the billboard size was based on) looks so nice. And i really wanna experiment with a palette like this. Also, i love how you have different accent colors for different places, making each area feel different
Thank you! The fun thing with the accent colours is that there's always new and different ways to use them depending on the exact selection; it's turned out to be a fun aesthetic choice for finding fresh characteristics for each area :D
I am not an artist by any means but love retro game design and music. I love seeing all of the designs you make and am thankful you share the whole process with us!
The scale of the building next to the sprites is mind blowing. The amount of information you can convey scales directly with its size, and so the character sprite looks less imposing by comparison. This is gorgeous!
I was seriously struggling with understanding the perspective on the building, until I finally got to see it with the highlights. I was like, “ohhhhh.” It’s cool when the artist’s intent comes out and suddenly it all makes sense. I adore the color palette for this game. Personally, I feel like limiting myself to one palette would drive me crazy, but not only do you make it look easy, but you make it all work together. The accent colors that swap based on the area is a great touch. I love the setting and I’m really excited to see more.
I really like that you are sharing how you make some of the art for your game. I‘d love to see more! I also love the different palettes for night and day
As a game developer i would recommend not making exclusive graphics for day and night. I would recommend trying to create a shader for all of that. You can work with 2D normals to create a pseudo 3D look. You can store a whole lot of information in a single texture, all of the space is wasted in using it just for coloring it for night time.
@@ianthebee2301 Usually they don't, because that would be a very high effort way of doing it. You still have multiple textures and get pretty poor results. Usually in 2D pixel art you are using something named "tinting" - what is basically just multiplying the brightness with a sky color. That's cheap and gets pretty good results. But it is old and you can do much better. You can apply lights(sun, environmental, etc.) to 2D sprites just like 3D models. The math behind that is pretty well known to 3D acceleration and modern graphics cards can do that with billions or even trillions of elements within fractions of a second.
@@delqyrus2619 Starbound have them and much more then that, however that game barely can run even on high end PCs. I get what you mean but something is missing to make it work better, or even in some cases to work at all.
"As a game developer" shut up. He didn't explain how they are actually handling the day night cycle, he just said there are two appearances. He didn't ask for advice, and I'd guess he's not actually handling this in the development. So please rope
There's one off pixel in the fan part that's driving me crazy, you can see the rim of the vent is all one pixel thick except for that one pixel on the left side. Great job on the artwork!
Truuu good eye. (Also the lower right side of that same vent rim has a pink highlight that feels like it should extend one more pixel to the left, but that’s even more nitpicky)
So I am not the only one noticing :D Was about to comment about it but decided not to mention but now I see your comment XD Yeah on the left side the rim at one place have 3 pixels instead of 2 compared to the right side where its 2 there (each section of the bends are made up by 2 pixels in those areas).
2:06 I'm very new to pixel art still (even though I've had the software for like a year and a half) but it is such a relief that you also use the selection tool to check the pixels and see if what I'm making is distanced correctly. Genuinely I thought I was going about it all wrong but this short, maybe 2 seconds of sped up footage really took a lot of stress off my back about stuff like this.
This is such a sick addition to the game!!! 😎 That was a really good explanation of the colour swapping logic; I'm continuously amazed by how much can be achieved within these limited parameters! 🎨🧑🎨
Thank you, I tried my best with the visual explanation! It's actually cool seeing the side-by-side day/night like that; we should prep more examples like that one because they're fun to look at 😄
I've been watching you for years, and you've been the main reason I've tried to do pixel art in that time! Even if I'm still not great at it. When Petal Runner was announced, I promoted the hell out of it to everyone I know, and I will be buying it the day it drops!
In case you were wondering, those little details to add interest to a surface are called greebles, at least within the model making community. Love the work you do and cant wait for the game release day!
I have this one pixel pet type of semi-visual fantasy romance novel of mine brewing for years. Every once in a while I hit a self-doubt wall, like:"people don't even like electronic pets anymore uwu, woe is me, etc, etc". Meanwhile you guys are just making a cyberpank pixel pet nostalgic masterpiece that's crazy interesting just to look at, let alone to actually play it one day! That's so inspiring! Thank you so much.
I'm so jazzed to actually get a game with your pixel art in it! You've always been big on crunchy little details that really bring out the environments, like in the HOP buildings here!
This is just SO. COOL. I’m pumped for you and the game and excited to see the videos about making assets like this. Love seeing the pixel work and sprite details built into a game. Looking forward to more!
Awesome aesthetic and design. Also great to get an insight into the functional aspect of game pixel art assets. All in all this is a wonderful addition to the channel’s content roster.
As someone that's been wanting to see your artwork in a game, hearing about you being an actual game developer for the first time has made me rather excited
5:21 Could lend itself very well to some in-universe nicknames that characters have for them. Like calling them the "Rabbit Force" etc. Or, similar to how IRL police can be referred to as "pigs", the H.O.P. members could be called "rabbits" or "bunnies".
In a game called Starbound there is a species of humanoid bunny race that went extinct so I can imagine this is what they could be like in the new age. I like the details and how it turned out. The light surely gives it another dimension.
Just amazing! Can't wait to play the game! How do you make the part where you show the evolution of your pixel art? Do you manually take screenshots at different parts of the process or do you export pics at specific steps?
Loved the result! Color palette looks super cool, is giving me sweet Nostalgia vibes. Could you make a video about the tools you use? I'm curious to know if you only use photoshop
Do you plan on petal runner being moddable? I keep thinking about how easy and cool it'd be to do recolors of the world since the color palette is so simple and it's pixel art. there could be a mod or feature that makes it have the classic gameboy green etc :D excited for this game!!
So good! Love the technique of overlaying the masks for the nighttime sprites. Curious about the music in this video/game…is it original or from another source?
Small thing I noticed: the sign you designed in this has "H.O.P." but the building itself is "H.O.P" (it's missing the third period). I know you'd probably catch that later but wanted to mention it for consistency.
one cool thing would be to just swap every color one or two steps down form daytime to night time you also wouldt relly need to do two sprites for everything, since oyu would be able to achieve that with a simple shader.+, but i know very well how big of a change that would be at this point.
I think the 16 directional bike looks very cool, I made a few 8 directional cars for a game and 8 was already a lot of work but 16 looks better. What are the controls for your bike?
I loveeee this channnel and this style, but for some reason this color palette isn’t sparking joy. Not dynamic enough or smth. Also kinda wish there was more contrast between lights and darks in night mode. (So unsolicited and I could never do what you do, but just another artist’s thought)
Close! I've been going with Highway Operation Patrol in my head for now, since they tend to have a presence on the roadways and map transitions, but it's not 'canonized' yet; it's been one of those times where you start with the acronym and try to reverse engineer some meaning to it 😅
I bet it feels good to be able to directly make videos about assets for the game haha. Great work as always!
Totally! Right out the gate I couldn't wait to share things like the sprite prep and the day/night colours, which is why that all ended up in this first asset prep video 😆

Oh I love the solution for nighttime glow effects
