If Brian was around he coulda told them running an empty microwave is dangerous because if there's nothing inside it to absorb the microwaves energy, it builds up way more rapidly and can kill the unit/cause damage/an actual fire etc
should run it with a small glass of water in it at the very least.

Any plans on doing a side-by-side comparison of Shelly vs a couple of the most popular smart light switches on the market? I'm currently at that impasse and torn between the manual (slightly unknown to me) work of wiring up a Shelly to each switch vs investing in something out-of-the-box solutions like Lutron. Or have a second breaker box just for the garage. A guy I used to work with did that for his Tesla so he could charge his car without affecting the house electric. He then is able to monitor his solar supplemented power used to charge the car and whatever isnt used back feeds into the line. The power company is literally paying him for the electricity he uses to get to work.....and he works for the electric company 🤓

    • @Dark17B

@@Watercooledguy Agreed with the second breaker box. Its honestly just more ideal and safer to run it separate for the Garage.
I think linus could do that and would be better off in the long run. Could even run a separate system of solar so he has a bank ready
for Tesla charges so it doesn't stress out the overall parameters of the house's breaker.

In Canada, the Tax Act does not allow the write off of business expense if the primary purpose of such expense wasn't to earn business income. Yes, making this video has earned him income but he has stated in videos multiple times that this is his new home and he plans to live in it. Therefore, the primary purpose is personal use while the secondary purpose is business income. With respect to certain areas/rooms being intended as an office, those expenses could be written off. I do not know how US business expense works but in Canada, the primary intention of use is a deciding factor on whether it applies or not. [Disclaimer: Not Legal Advice]

If you have all your light switches, PowerPoint's and lights running wireless, it just creates the problem of drop-outs and unpairing issues. Linus being a tech lord should know this! For example Nest thermostat and cams are a giant PIA to integrate and requires quite a few hoops to jump through. You will need to do a bit of coding in the HA yaml files to make some things work . Don't get intimidated there is lots of videos and tutorials and the HA community has been a friendly and pleasant experience. Great Episode! I came to the same conclusion months ago when starting a building automation project. One thing about ZWave, because of the standardized structure for commands, any device not listed can be easily added by simply adding parameters. I did this with openHAB. I introduced a commercial Yale Lock with an AYR202 ZWave module. openHAB detected the device, I submitted the resulting XML to the Open Smart Home site and was invited to add in the ZWave parameters which form the basis of the device channels. I can now program codes and simply unlock the door with a tap. ZWave is the way to go for most building automation.

With the power of home assistant you can add a lot more smarts to it then just motion, for example, in my computer room I have my lights also trigger off my computer's idle time. I was having issues with my office lights turn off with me sitting at the computer. (Apparently I don't move that much)
But now every time my mouse moves or the motion sensor sense motion the 20 minutes timer resets. You could do the same thing for like a TV room. If your media device is playing a something home assistant can assume the room is occupied.

Why would you want a microphone? Home Assistant knows that my TV is on and that Plex is running and what is playing, so as long as something is playing it doesn't turn the light's on. When I pause, it turns them on to a medium setting and when I stop it goes to full.

I’m running almost 60 devices, from dimmers to switches, smart bulbs, cameras, doorbells, locks, motion sensors, light sensors, occupancy sensors, alarm equipment - all on a Vera Home Controller with built in z wave, zig bee and Wi-Fi.
Some things are automated by scheduling or conditional logic, while others are parts of scenes that I can initiate with Google.
I replaced a switch at a time when I could afford it, and now the house is almost fully automated.

I also went with mostly Z-Wave products when I started my journey with Home Assistant. However I opted for a USB dongle that supported both Z-Wave and Zigbee for one reason only, Ikea. All of Ikea's smart things are Zigbee based and so far work natively with Zigbee Home Automation inside Home Assistant.

Guys you missed an amazing really smart thing you could use that stand alone 6way sensor if it has vibration detection.. Earthquake detection.. now I have no idea how "sensitive" the device is and you'd want to set the threshold for such a trigger very very high otherwise a big semi getting lost and coming down the street could set it off. Still though if tuned "right" you could have it cut power to the whole or key sections of the house (block out spots for emergency lighting and network so you theoretically could still access net for info). Setting it up to turn off things like gas (if possible) or high volt/amp devices, the safety that would add to the house during "a big one" would be major because lots of "after the quake" damage comes from fires, live gas, live high volt/amp electrical and so on.

You really don't need videos like this to "smartify" your home......unless you're going for full home automation. There are smart thermostats, smart locks, smart bulbs.... Unless you have a house similar in build to his, you can do home automation fairly inexpensive with less risk of catastrophic failure later. I would avoid the smart locks though....cuz, security and all.....
